Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Costa Rica vs. Ecuador

Another one for the die-hards out there. For a moment there, this match was of great consequence. But with Poland's exit at the hands of Oliver Neuville's late goal, this game doesn't mean much. However, you may want to have another look at England's likely second round opponents. If you're watching, post away.

Way hay, are still you feeling confident about the England? I've got that sickening combination of elation and tension at the pit of my stomach.

As predicted, it's the Glen Davis/Shep Messing horror show on the Deuce. Oh baby, you're kidding me!

I'd take a one-niller out of this one. We don't want Germany to have to get a result out of Ecuador in the last match, just in case.

You notice how deep the Ecuadorans are defending. They know that Wanchope and Gomez are speed merchants. No fools. What was Klinsmann thinking in that opening match?

GOAL: 1-0 Ecuador. Tenoria is on fire. Completely unmarked in the box, though. A free header in the six yard box, fairly low to the ground too. CR are rubbish, aren't they?

Let's not get too crazy here, Ecuador.

This one has slowed down. Tenorio took a hell of a knock that should really have resulted in a red card rather than merely a yellow. Refs really have been lenient. He's been limping ever since. More good news for England.

Nearly there again for Ecuador; goalkeeper tips it onto the post.

Then CR has an open header. Terrible miss. But this one has opened up in the past five minutes.

Amazing miss from Delgado. They've been getting lots of love from Valencia on the right wing crossing in. All Delgado had to do was stick out his left toe and it was 2-0; what a chump. They should really be three up now, but fortunately for us, they're only 1-0 up.

Half-time: 1-0; that went quickly. I'm really just pumped for the England match with only an eye on this match. Ecuador are easily doing CR who are hopeless. I'm just hoping they don't run up a score in the second half. 1-0 suits me fine.

ecuador just about better than costa rica here, but strangely they seem to be content with the one.

witness the delgado miss just minutes ago. that was fat ron-esque in the way he didn't bother to attack that ball that was on a bloody plate.

the ticos started off a bit shaky, but they settled after going down a goal. i think the extra forward saborio and dropping mendez a bit behind the front two is a good move.

i still think that this could go either way though ecuador could just end the contest if they wanted to bad enough. they're obviously a better team.

oh yeah, the nerves have been jangling since i woke up this morning. the constant noise about whether to use rooney today and the inclusion of carra for neville have been a bit hard to take.

good laugh as the 'venerable' el tel has called the ticos puerto ricans a couple of times.

They really need to put a sock in it about the Roon. At the most, he'll come off the bench if it doesn't matter. A quick run about and then put him back in the cotton wool for Sweden. And that's if we need a result. The Swedes on the evidence of the other day might just draw against Paraguay.

Good one about El Tel. At least it's not just these idiots having trouble. Is that the ITV coverage? Des Lynam? Bob Wilson?

A little more lively there from Delgado. He roused himself for a decent volley after another delicious cross from Valencia. I definitely rate that kid. Saved by the keeper.

GOAL: 2-0 Ecuador; Delgado rifles one in from the near post. Goalkeeper completely hilarious on that one, no where near his near post. Delgade, with Tenorio off the pitch is getting most of the chances and space. He could have another but I hope not.

Right now as it stands the Germans have five goals for and two against. The Ecuadorans now have four goals for and none against. You know what that means. Unless CR get one back, the Germans will have to beat Ecuador in the last match in order to top the group. Bugger!

The talented boy Valencia has just been crippled by a CR thug. If only one of the CR scrubs can stick a goal in, this looks better and better for us.

the commentary team is itv's 2nd string. gary walsh doing color, with piltdown sam, psycho, and el tel back in the studio with that jim guy who looks like sesemme street's the count.

the commentator is that irritating man utd fan who goes delirious when ryan giggs gets a corner.

he's hilarious because he can't help himself from running delgado's 3 month tenure at s'ton. just on and on about how infuriating a player he is when he can pull out performances like this. i say he's a passenger even here. i don't care that he scored that howler by the tico keeper when he spent the first half just strolling around. he could have had a hat-trick and instead he's 'rocking the baby' because the tico keeper can't guard his near post.

I haven't read what has come before but this will put them ahead of Germany and would only need a draw to win the group!!

Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, Dave, that's the problem we're facing. Do we really want the Germans to have to sweat out a win against this lot? I don't think so. They look quite organized.

Gooner Steve: I believe you're talking about Jim Rosenthal in the studio. Don't know who that commentator might be. In any case, they're miles better than Shep Messing. I've got the sound down now and am listening to yesterday's broadcast of World Soccer Daily.

Alright lads, have you got the England shirts on today? Scarves? Are the kiddies giving you any stick, Dave?

c'mon guys. these ecuadorans are flattering to deceive here. we all watched the concacaf qualifiers so we all know that costa rica are just a bit of tat.

the us played ecuador a close game right around christmas last year. they're dependent on what side of the bed delgado woke up on and their keeper is a laugh.

I can't wear anything England until they win!!!
Of course the kids are being a pain, they're 8th graders.
I am very nervous!!!
Rooney or no Rooney?
Any news on line up?

Blogger gatorbob said...

I say no Roon, at least until the 70th minute and only if it's a run-out with nothing at stake. Haven't heard the starting eleven yet, but I'll post it as soon as it comes through. I did hear that Gary Neville is nobbled. He'll likely be replaced by Jamie Carragher, right?

Gooner Steve, I'm not sure I've made my points clear enough. It's not that I fear Ecuador. It's that as it stands right now they would top the group and presumably play Sweden in the second round and we'd get the Germans. This result forces the Germans to have to win against Ecuador; are you sure that they're up to that after last night's performance?

Blogger gatorbob said...

Nearly a third goal for Ecuador there. Come on you Ticos!

Blogger gooner71 said...

that's it exactly. jim rosenthal. my description fits, no?

rooney has been declared fit to play. the smart money is a quick run-around for both rooney and theo today at about the 75th minute mark if the trinis are good and defeated by that point. sven's definitely sticking it to united like only a man with no fear of consequences of his actions can. he's testier with the press than at any time i can remember and he's always shrunken away from the confrontation with Furg before. no more. get stuffed, you manky smelling glaswegian git seems to be the swede's parting message.

el tel is characterizing the trinis as the most viscious of tacklers since uruguay's merchants of pain of the 60's. i don't think they'll spare the physicality because they have nothing else to offer, but i don't see them as filthy either. surprizing number of trini car flags and trini shirts on display in w. hampstead this morning.

don't worry. england's got the quality to see them off proper. we're peaking at the right time.

I like your confidence, Gooner. I'm still on pins and needles over this one. And if that's the case with T&T, just imagine what a wreck I'll be if we draw Germany in the Second Round!

10:47 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

oh, you may be right there. if this stands, i reckon that the germans would be happy with passing the ball between mertesacker and metzelder all night with brief pauses for bollock to roll around like he's been shot.

if this stands, neither group a match will be watchable at all.

ooh, almost got your wish there. how many forwards are the ticos playing now, 6?

10:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Absolutely, I'm not sure I'll even tape Costa Rica-Poland. What a complete waste of time - except as an alternative to Ambien.

wow, dave could have handed all three of his boys juice boxes and mopped up the spills off the floor in the time it took wanchope to bring that ball down and take a shot. i'd say he's given up.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, come on Paolo. Decent chance there and all he did was swing his big, goony leg at it as if he couldn't be more bothered than if he were mailing a card to his mum. That was hopeless!

GOAL: 3-0 Another nice cross from the right and a great volley from Kaviedes. He's impressed me as well today. That gives them a goal difference of five - the Germans definitely need a win now.

Ecuador could've probably had a penalty there but the ref saved CR's blushes. It's all over!

Full Time: 3-0
