The ESPN coverage has started with troubling scenes out of Marseille. It seems as if UEFA are putting the blame squarely on the Russian fans.
The team news out of Paris this morning:
Turkey: Volkan; Gokhan Gonul, Mehmet Topal, Balta, Caner; Oguzhan, Ozan Tufan; Selcuk, Hakan Çalhanoglu, Arda Turan; Cenk.
Croatia: Subasic; Srna, Corluka, Vida, Strinic; Badelj, Modric, Brozovic, Rakitic, Perisic; Mandzukic.
Referee: Jonas Eriksson (Sweden).
Good morning. mate. Great to join you. These two met in the quarters eight years ago when Croatia took the lead with two minutes remaining in ET then Turkey went stright up the pitch , tied it up and won in penalties. This should be a close match
The Croats have an excellent midfield and I would give them the edge.
They're off from the Parc Des Princes
Good morning, mate - we're away at Paris on a gloomy morning. I agree with you; the Croats have a brilliant side - I really rate them.
Rakitic diverts a cross from Srna wide off the target
Oh - close call there for Ivan Rakitic who got a telling touch on that cross; just wide.
I disagree with Julie Fowdy about the Turkish discipline. Have we been watching different Turkish matches.
Ozan is lectured for a foul on Modric. A brawl nearly broke out due to that supposed fantastic Turkish discipline
I usually enjoy Julie's comments; she's one of the more informed women's commentators - but she got that one wrong.
Agreed, unless losing the plot is discipline. Also, did you notice that Vinnie Kompany is in the studio with TT?
Horrible free kick straight into the arms of the Croatian keeper.
I did notice that; he seems too taciturn to be a useful panelist. He barely said two words.
A bit of a chippy start with niggly fouls from both teams. Perhaps a trip to the Hall mark store/kiosk is in order.
I turned it on in the middle of the conversation, but he mentioned about Loveren not being in the Croat squad and how it might unsettle the defense. I thought that was a good point.
There have been a lot of free-kicks. You have to assume the pace will settle down at some point. It’s very stop-start at the moment.
Mandzukic has a header blocked after a corner was headed away
I still see a lot of quality in the Croatian defense - Srna, Corluka and so on. I don't see the weaknesses that they were mentioning. This is a side that has played together a lot.
It's a cool rainy day, so the players should not tire easily. The weather doesn't seem to have been oppressive up to this point
Another free kick for the Turks. The service has been poor so far. We'll see. Better and earns a corner.
It just hasn't been an entertaining start. Both teams are trying to attack, but the quality is lacking up to this point.
Perisic makes a great run down the left and his cross is headed over by Brozovic
You're definitely right about that one.
Rakitic seems to have finally figured out that the mullet went out of fashion twenty years ago. Much tidier short back and sides now.
Croatia are playing the better football. They just need to come up with a killer final ball. They’ve not been ruthless enough yet. Sound familiar?
Badelj volleys straight to the Turkish keeper after a cross was punched away by the keeper.
Subasic comes up big in that exchange.
OH!!! A rare Turkish attack and the best chance of the match as Gokhan Goncul had a free header straight to Subisic . Turkey should have been in the lead.
The main difference with Coratia is that they are playing with more pace than in the past and they are doing a lot of attacking down the flank, putting in a good numb er of crosses. COR!
Corlucka, the ex Citeh and Spud defender is a bloody mess after being hit by a stray elbow by Cenik Tosun , who is booked. It didn't seem intentional, so the correct decision.
Corluka has gone off for a nasty head clash and reappeared with the patented Paul Ince pint of Guinness.
Corlucka is walking like an Egyptian as he is bandaged up . Mandzukic claims that he got an elbow too.
Nice one, mate
Modric concedes a free kick in a great position for the Turks to whip in a cross.
Modric with a trip leads to another free kick for Turkey.
High, wide and horrible.
The free kick looks like one of Johnny Wilkinson's free kicks.
Persic has the number 4 shaved into his bonce.
Decent turn and hit from Mandzukic.
He will hope that it doesn't represent their standing in group play after all three matches have been played.
Dario Srna has a cross blocked for another corner.
Srna earns a corner for Croatia. Rotten one too - over everyone.
GOAL! Modric finally breaks the deadlock!
GOAL !!!! MODRIOC SCORES WITH A SPECTACULAR VOLLEY FROM ABOUT 30 YARDS OUT AFTER THE TURKS FAILED TO DEAL WITH THE CORNER THAT SRNA WON
The corner seemed to have come to nothing but when the clearance looped up, Modric hit it on the full volley - it took a bounce before going by the keeper.
1-0 Croatia.
Agreed. It was a poor corner, but made its way to Rakitic, who cross was cleared and spectacularly volleyed in by Modric
Perisic tackles Arda Turan for a Turkish corner in stoppage time. Two minutes.
Hakan Balta heads into the side netting from an angle where he was never going to score.
Croatia lead 1-0 at the half thanks to a spectacular volley from Modric that came out of nowhere
A fairly pedestrian half comes to an end, punctuated by Modric's moment of brilliance. That's the difference between the sides.
I still haven't seen a team that impresses me as being better than England, regardless of yesterday's result.
The second half is underway as Fatih Terim has made a sub or two.
We're back on at Paris for the second half. It can only get better.
Turkey have made a positive change, bringing on the speedy Volkan Sen for Oguzhan Ozyakup.
Strange as it may seem , unless France played well, Wales have had the best start
Sounds like a VW cam eon for lentil soup
Cen has a volley blocked . A good start for the sub
Hakan Balta booked for a foul from behind on Not So super Mario
Decent volley on the turn there by Volkan Sen - blocked out.
Srna is stamped on the thigh and no booking? The free kick is swuing in and a tame header by unsuper Mario is straight to the keeper.
Corluka is out for the second half with a butterfly bandage on his head but the strapping off. I wouldn't put my head in the danger area, but he's made of stronger stuff than I am apparently.
Nice run by Rakitic and he earns a tasty free kick opportunity.
Rakitic is tripped from behind just outside the D
Corlucka was injured due to a stray elbow
Oh - Dario Srna rockets one off the bar. I thought that was going in.
OH!!!The free kick from Srna is off the top of the bar
Off for some tasty brekkies - back in a tick.
OH!!! The keeper fumbles a pass from Perisic and Srna shoots wide of an open goal
Cheers mate. Enjoy.
Corluka is off for treatment yet again. Surely, he will need to be replaced.
Volkan Cen has a cross headed out by Vida for a corner. Subisic easily ctaches the corner from Hakan Balta
OH!!!! Nearly a second as it's another spectacular volley, but this time from Brezovic. Mandzukic chested down a long throw and the volley from Brezovic was inches over the upper 90.
Burak Yilmaz is on for Arda Turan as Turkey will now play with two strikers.
OH!!!! Brezovic , with an out stretched leg , just failed to make contact with a deflected cross from Perisic at the far post.
The final roll of the dice for Fatih trerim as 18 year old Emre Mor is on for Cenik Tusan
OH!!! A great cross from Mandzukic and Perisic heads against the bar from about three yards out
Corluka is down yet again and how many times will he be able to be treated?
Volkan Sen is called for a rash challenge on Rakitic.
Mandzukic has a header tipped over by the keeper as a long throw took a bounce in the box.
A corner from Rakitic was headed high and wide.
Strinin is booked for a foul inches outside the box for a foul on Volkan Cen
Back after a tasty brekkies courtesy of Kathy.
The free kick from Erkin is straight to Subisic
Great to hear. You should be energized for the final few minutes.
Good save there at the feet of Perisic.
This one is looking good for my prediction of Croatia coming second in Group D.
OH!!!Another missed chance as Rakitic superbly put through Perisic , who shot against the keeper.
I think I picked Croatia to be second as well. Not sure if I picked the Turks as one of the four best third placed teams.
Perisic limping off and Kramaric will have a late, late cameo.
You did pick Croatia second but you didn't rate Turkey highly enough to have them third. You third placers are Wales, Romania, Republic of Ireland, and Iceland.
Andre Kramaric , who left the Foxes because he couldn't force his way into the team, is on for Perisic.
Thanks, mate. I feel confident about my picks, but Wales may place higher than third.
It certainly seems like it after yesterday but then they could (and should) get pounded by England on Thursday morning. Are you around for that one?
Gordon Schildenfeld is on for Rakitic.
Sorry I won't be around for that. I'm teaching summer school, so Unfortunately, I won't be around for weekday matches in the month of June., I expect a very tight, even match between England and Wales.
Four minutes of stoppage time.
Volkan Sen booked for a foul on Srna. That seemed a little harsh
A time wasting sub as Pjaca is on for Mandzukic, who put in a decent shift
Croatia just trying to see out this match now.
Great last ditch tackle by Corlucka to prevent a late equalizer. COR!!! England should watch what to do to preserve a late lead.
I agree with you - should be very tight.
Corlucka off for treatment for the umpteenth time
Big shout for a penalty in the Croatia area. Ref waved it off.
It's over as Croatia deservedly win 1-0, but should have won by more. They missed several great chances.
That's it - Croatia have won their opening match of Euro 2016.
Off to get a refreshing shower in before the late one.
Same here.
CHEERS!
