Euro 2020/1 - Day 4
Morning, boys! I'm really getting to enjoy this "Morning with the Euros" routine. On Day 4, we start with the other match in England's group, Scotland v. Czech Republic, from Hampden. The Jocks really need a result in this one if they're to progress from this group.
The tea-time kick-off is, as usual, not exactly a barnburner, with the lesser teams in Group D, Poland and Slovakia, getting their campaigns started. Finally, at the end of the day, Spain get started against Sweden. Will the former European champions get off to a winning start? We'll soon see. Join me for all the action today.
508 Comments:
It's been 23 years since the Jocks were in a major tournament and the panel are having a bit of fun at Craig Burley's expense showing old clips of him both scoring and getting sent off in their appearance.
The teams getting ready in the tunnel now:
Scotland: Marshall, Hanley, Cooper, Hendry, O’Donnell, Armstrong, McGinn, McTominay, Robertson, Dykes, Christie.
Subs: McGregor, Adams, Gordon, Taylor, Turnbull, Nisbet, Fraser, McLaughlin, Patterson, Gilmour, Forrest, McKenna.
Czech Republic: Vaclik, Coufal, Celustka, Kalas, Boril, Soucek, Kral, Masopust, Darida, Jankto, Schick.
Subs: Kaderabek, Brabec, Barak, Holes, Krmencik, Sevcik, Mandous, Zima, Hlozek, Vydra, Mateju, Pekhart.
Referee: Daniel Siebert (Germany).
Morning Bob
It is great to get the day started early with footer!!
I have a busy day today and probably won't see any of the matches in its entirety !
I have to drive Jon to an apt and will have to leave before the end of the first, won't be home before the second starts and I have to pick up Kath during the third
Thankfully 5Live gives great commentary
ESPN's resident fake Scot Derek Rae on the microphone this morning. Teams coming out at Hampden now.
Out comes the teams
Morning, Dave - welcome. It does sound like you've got a busy day. We've got some errands as well to take care of, including a run to the post office to mail Kate's Father's Day present and a run to the DMV to pick up some paperwork. I'm going to try to take care of that during the mid-day Poland v. Slovakia snooze fest.
Big Liam Cooper in the starting XI today, so that's three LUFC players involved in the Euros so far.
I thought there would be thorough LOB interest this morning, with McTom for the two Davids, and Cooper for Bob, but Tierney isn't in the matchday squad today for my interest. Though you could imagine that David Luiz was lining up for the Czechs but that side-show haircut is Alex Kral.
I'm looking after my father in law this morning so lets hope the building's internet keeps up. 1-1, or 2-2 would do me todqy.
Flower of Scotland sounded great
Did they say why Tierney isn't even on the bench?
Derek Rae has obviously had his haggis already this morning, as he's started in with the ridiculous pronunciation early.
Morning Steve
We are off in Glasgow
Morning, Steve - welcome!
I'm rooting for a Scotland win
He ended our season just back from injury and may still be getting back to full fitness. I'm happy Kieron isn't being risked. I'm not fussed that Saka wasn't in the matchday squad for England either.
Yeah, apparently Tierney picked up an injury in training.
England and Scotland have both worn one color instead of blue and white shorts respectively...I don't like it
I would like a draw for Scotland. Something so that they aren't all het up for Friday. Anything to keep that match from boiling over and a Scottish win.
The Jocks will have to watch out for giving away needless set pieces today. As Leeds found out when they played West Ham this season, Tomas Soucek is lethal from those routines.
"niggling injury"..... rest him for today and Friday!
A bit of early verbals between Robertson and Soucek there.
A mistake at the back and McGinn was nearly in there. Corner.
Wonder why Che Adams didn't start
Formation...I guess
Agreed. The monochrome kit is a bore. It's something that FIFA under Infantino has favored and pressed through FIFA's partnership with Adidas for one. They're so NFL obsessed, I would not be shocked if they recommend a home white kit and colored away before long.
They are saying the Jocks' problem is goal scoring.... well start a Premier League striker then!
This one has the feel of a really competitive Championship level match - say, Swansea v. Cardiff.
The guy on the Guardian blog suggested that Christie would be a better match up against the Czech back four than Adams. I expect to see him bombing off the bench in the second half.
Che Adams is not international class, that's why. You're a striker Dave, do you see anything remotely striker-ish about that guy? When you coached an athlete with no instinct for the ball like Adams, were you ever successful making him into something he wasn't?
The US sports are starting to go away from the white at home
The NFL teams usually wear their colors at home...Giants wear blue
The NHL now have teams were the colors at home
The NBA.....they are wearing whacko stuff!
The Danes did wear white shorts
Bamford gets a mention
I'm with you Dave. I miss those more varied kits. Monochrome removes some of what's special about football.
Good point Steve
Good morning everyone. Back from two dog walks and pet feedings.
Absolutely - the blue and white was the classic Scots look.
Morning, David - how are you, mate?
Does Bamford qualify as a Scot? He should declare for them in that case because it won't be his day for England any time soon.
Doing well, Bob. Thank you for asking
Oh - good save from Marshall after a decent effort by Schick.
First shot of the day
Schick with a shot
Well saved
Again....no foul called when a player hits the deck...I LOVE IT
I so hope the Prem learns
The Czech razor puts a sharp shot on goal which is well saved.
David Marshall does well to turn around a shot from Schick. That was a close shave
Morning David
The latest check shows that the Scots holding on by a razor thin edge
Good morning , Dave
Come on Jocks...play with more passion....don't save it for Friday
I've never heard that Patrick has any Scots connection. He seems a modest guy. I think he appreciates that, at his age, he's not likely to get a look in with Gareth. Even though he scored more than, say, Ollie Watkins, Gareth will probably think that he can groom him for the future.
The crowd get loud when the Scots go forward...do it more often!
Good point brought up by Derek Rae. Hampden was Andy Robertson's home pitch when he played for Queens Park. He's worked his way up the ladder
Dykes plays for QPR and was also eligible to play for the Aussies, but opted for the Jocks
I see that Derek's yellow pad is filled with facts for you Dave.
Thanks for the background, David - I count on you for that.
Cheers, Bob and Steve . Glad to help
McTom hasn't been in this match yet.
FOTMOB has Ryan Christie listed as the striking partner for Dykes, but he's always been a midfield player when I've seen him play
Agreed. I'm surprised unless McTomain is having problems with his McTummy and has a bout of poisoning . We hope not
Robertson left one on Masoput who's down in need of treatment.
Speaking of Dereks, a kid that Melanie and I babysat when his family lived next door has just qualified for the US Olympic trials in the steeplechase. He's got an outside shot of going to Tokyo. Derek Johnson is his name and he runs for the University of Virginia.
Steve Clarke needs to shave. A shame Schick refused to loan him a razor
Derek Rae....stop pronouncing random words with such vigor!
Derek needs a slap for this ridiculous pronunciation. Give it a rest with the "Lay-ver-koosen," mate.
WOW... I'll be looking out for the name
Of course, England should hammer these two!
Wow - that's amazing. We had a Fredonia girl in the Olympics the first year I was in town and there were little lawn flags out for her all over town.
Great minds think alike Bob!
Surprised he didn't just say IT ALLIE
WOW! That is. What are the chances of living in the same town as an Olympian
Very scrappy match, this one. I don't fear either of these sides. Croatia was the match I was worried about and that's done and dusted now.
Just wait until Derek gets his tongue wrapped around some of the Dutch names. Doom-friesse, Ver-TONG-hen, etc.
Agreed . England won what should be the toughest group match yesterday. This is the battle for third place if either of these two even go through
He might emphasize the names to hide the fact that he has an extremely tough time pronouncing any of those names even though he shouldn't
Oh - Christie played Robertson in there and the Liverpool man pulled a decent save out of the keeper.
OH! Andy Robertson should have given the Scots the lead, but his powerful shot was tipped over
Clever corner pulled back to McGinn on the penalty spot. Blocked out, McGinn thought with use of a hand. Nothing doing from the German ref.
Robertson with a shot from outside the box tipped over
Could have hit it harder...just wanted to hit the target
Shot blocked from the corner
McGinn wants a handball
will VAR check?
No
Again, I think so far VAR is being used so much better than in the Prem
It came off a back header from a throw and a nice pass from Ryan Chrisitie
I agree. The Poem needs to take some lessons from the Euros on the use of VAR
I always thought the Olympian I would know was a little brother of Eric's kindergarten friend, JT Oliver, but he missed qualifying at state level by a whisker in freestyle and butterfly stroke.
This kid Derek moved away from us after his sister was born, but started running with his dad at about 8 years old. He's all sinew and muscle at 20 now so it's hard to credit for us.
Wonder how he would pronounce our favorite
Van De Kerkof
Never a pen.
Or Stephan Koonz.
I've always been impressed by those who do steeplechase. Have you ever stood next to one of those? They're bloody high. I'd do myself in just trying to get over it - straight onto my face first try.
I have. They look hard enough for a horse, much less a man.
I had a type . The Prem , not poem needs lesson on use of VAR
I did take a few horseback riding lessons in Mildenhall, but never opted for the steeple chase. Too much of a hurdle
This looks to be another first half without goals. It's becoming a trend.
Bugger.... the Czechs take the lead!
Bugger! I spoke too soon. Patrick Schick with a header to open the scoring for the Czechs. Good header!
Nostrobobus again
Your timing is exquisite!
GOAL !!!! PADDY SCHICK HEADS THE CZECHS INTO THE LEAD OFF A CROSS FROM COUFAL THAT WAS HAMMERED IN AFTER A CORNER WAS HEADED AWAY
Commentator's curse?
That drops England down to second place in the group because of the alphabet
The Razor puts the Czechs up with a strong header between the two centre-backs. Get one, but only one back you Jocks.
Yeah - a 1-1 draw would definitely suit me, too.
The corner wasn't the greatest as it sailed over everyone , but Darida got the ball, played the ball wide right to Coufal and his great cross was well headed in by Schick as the Scots haver been well and truly shaved
Scotland need to attack more!!!
See what happens when you put good crosses into the box
Into stoppage time
A minute of that
Scots howl for a penalty after McTom falls in the area. German ref not impressed.
The Scots ask for a foul...I think it was McTom out of control
McTomain and Stu Armstrong wroth shots blocked
I think all the refs have done well
Half time
0-1
All these Czech giants are giving me a bit of concern. I think a win over the Scots is really going to be key. I don't want to go into our third game knowing that it's going to be an aerial bombardment from start to stop.
Well, that's another occasion of obstruction. Those are never called. It would have been an indirect free kick about three yards from goal.
The Czechs one up at the half by a razor's edge
That's half time - time to regroup for the Jocks. I'm off for a shower.
At least they're having fun in the fan zone.
I haven't been impressed by the Championship striker at all. Maybe give Che a chance. He couldn't do much worse. And I think it's time to yell in the ear of McGinn, Armstrong, and McTom to put their bloody fingers out. Tell them to imagine that they're playing Arsenal.
Nice one, Steve. Those three should be playing well, no excuses
Scotland to make a change
Che Adams on for Christie
Away we go
Just as Steve ordered. Che Addams on, for Ryan Christie as the second half is underway
CR go close twice
Wake up JOCKS
Adams has scored in two straight games for the Scots...let's make it three
Off the crossbar!!
COME ON SCOTLAND!
OH! Off the top of the bar from Jack Henry as the Scots nearly tied it up after a cross from Andy Robertson was headed away then cut back
Keeper has to dive back and keep that out!
Almost a classic og
Spectacular flying save from Vacklik. Nice long ball from, Andy Robertson then A czech defender nearly chipped his own keeper for an OG that would have tied it up
Is your picture keep pausing....right now it is frozen!
Grant Hanley down off a late challenge from Coufal
my sound is continuing but not the picture
I'm back from the shower just in time to see Grant Hanley down for some treatment.
Not problems here so far
I turned the channel and back
TWO NIL
A shot from Edinburgh!!
Oh my word - look at that from Patrick Schick!
Why do keepers go out so far!!!
Great finish
GOAL!!! SCHICK AT THE DOUBLE AS THE CZEC HS GO TWO UP AS DAVID MARSHALL WAS EMBARRASSED WITH A LONG RANGE BECKHAM STYLE CHIP
Similar to the one by Becks against Wimbledon
A big hole for the Jocks to dig out of now.
Wow. A bit special from the Czech Razor. He's been predicted to be a breakout star and he's not disappointed so far.
The Czechs are rampant now and this could get embarrassing for Scotland. Darida with a chance for a third.
The Czechs need to stop scoring!
Yeah - that's right and then some - now level with The Chunk for Golden Boot. And he's got more than half an hour to get his hat-trick.
That goal was against the run of play and I think the first time the Czechs were even in the Scottish half . Shot from Jack Henry blocked and broke to Schick who chipped David Marshall just ahead of the halfway line .. Nice fi wish, but Marshall way too far off his line
Did anyone pick Schick( Chic) for GBB or first hat-trick. I doubt it
I remember watching Schick play for AC Milan in the CL and he never really did well there. Now playing for Leverkusen
Now's the time for Che Adams to come bombing off the bench, eh?
Nope - not a single participant, David. Lukaku and Kane were the most popular choices.
At least the striker from the Addams Family will go into challenges despite being one dimensional. The openly other remotely close option is Craig Forrest or the inexperienced Kevin Nisbet of His
ooh...deflected on to the top of the net
GET IN!
Sorry. Kevin Nisbet of Hibs.
Oh - Stuart Armstrong with a strong run and shot. Deflected onto the top of the net. They need to take advantage of these set pieces.
The Serie A is a graveyard for young strikers. He's much better off in the Bundesliga though he's bound to get everyone's attention after today. Rated a $28M player. Make that Sterling now.
Sorry - I've just noticed that Che Adams already came on at the beginning of the half when I was still getting out of the shower.
Stu Armstrong unlucky not to score as his long range shot was deflected inches over then the corner from Andy Robertson headed out and a nice close range block by Valkcik from Dykes
Agreed, Steve. Schick did the right thing by moving to the Bundesliga. Perhaps someone like the Bees or Canaries would be interested in him
If Armstrong had scored, that would gave put the their keeper in a pickle all right.
Andy Robertson gets past Coufal and wins a corner
Any of the Prem teams that have a consistent crosser of the ball would be interested.
Bugger...thought it was going in....come on!
Oh - great save with his feet by Vaclik. Dykes thought he had scored.
OH! Nice kick save by Vaclick off a close range shot from Dykes who really should have scored
That HAD to be buried!!
I didn't realize that Vaclik is the starting keeper for Sevilla
Again, Dyckes not ruthless enough with his finishing.
Callum McGregor on for Jack Hendry
Ryan Fraser joining proceedings now.
Wee Ryan on for Stu Armstrong
Armstrong leaving which is a surprise. He was just waking up and replacing him with an injury addled terrier like Fraser is a Hell of a punt for Clark. Hope it works.
I think Steve Clarke figures that wee Ryan adds something a little different . I would have brought him, but for someone other than Stu Armstrong who is normally reliable
Scotland haven't been terrible today, just haven't got the cutting edge up front.
Me too David. I thought Armstrong was just finally going through the gears.
Burnley will get representation as Matty Vydra about to come on
Double change for the Czechs adam Hlozek for Jankto and Matty Vydra for Masopust
Burnley's big lump Vydra comes on to torture Cooper and Hanley for the last twenty minutes.
Kalas of Bristol Cuty down off a challenge from QPR's Dykes in a typical Championship challenge. That's not idle gossip
Will Matty Vydra drive and hit the mini Cooper in a head on collision?
Oh - McTom had a chance but blasted his volley well over.
McTom hits one over the bar and that is the last action for me
Talk to you guys later
TTFN
Cheerio, Dave!
Free kick headed down and McTomain blasts over from close range. Watching that makes me feel like I have a case of McTomain poisoning
The evidence so far is that a career in the Scottish Prem is no preparation for international competition. These guys should be farmed out throughout the Bundesliga while the selectors start searching the geneological sites for Scottish grannies and grandaddys.
Latere Dave.
Cheers, Dave. Hope to chat with you later
James Forrest of Celtic on for Stephen O'Donnell of Motherwell and Nisbet of Hibs on for Dykes of QPR
Not sure why someone Motherwell is starting ahead of some one on Celtic
Schick looking fort a hat-trick but his first time shot straight to David Marshall
I just did a check for what it's worth . Two SPL players started and three off the bench. Four of those five play for Celtic and one for Motherwell. Surprised rangers didn't get any representation even though two of their players are non playing subs today
OH! Forrest Gump with a close range shot deflected over for a corner
It's all one-way traffic now but the Scots keep knocking on a door that's not opening.
If the Scots lose this match then what chance is there of getting anything out of the other two matches? Practically none
I'd have to double check, but I have the impression that Stevie G has been accumulating a cosmopolitan first team of non-Scots. Only two in the 26 are on Rangers' books and both are decidedly third choice.
Schick comes off - no hat-trick for him today. Tepid applause for him from the Hampden faithful - not very sporting.
Double Czech change. Darida and Schick off . Sevchik and Kremlik on
Derek Rae keeps saying that Scotland is a footballing country, but the reports I've read lately have suggested that young kids are not playing football at the same rates they once did in Scotland.
Glenn Kamara of Rangers started for the Finns and I think Croatia has a Rangers players that was on the bench ,reinforcing that Steve G's side is cosmopolitan. Is he the best English manager other than Southgate? Not sure
Yeah, I think the Scottish goose looks pretty cooked. They hustle but to no positive effect. Only Adams has come on and produce even half chances. I don't know what they do to get back into this competition.
Oh - Marshall prevents a third goal there for the Czechs.
I disagree with derek Rae based on their performance in the past twenty years and what Bob abstracted would explain that
No chance at a hat-trick for Schick today
Let's be honest - the Scots were never going to do much in this tournament. I had England tops, Croatia second and the Czechs as one of the best third place teams in this group. But I'd hoped that they might give their home support something to cheer on today. Shame.
Considering this is not one of the great Czech times , the Scots are on a hiding to nothing if they don't drastically improve
Scotland is not a footballing country in the sense of a competitive footballing country. There's a history for sure, but at this time, they're more effective at chasing eggs. Derek's putting the best face on this that he can, but he's miles off.
I predict a first half goal for England against the Auld enemy will be scored at the time of half past Kennedy
Agreed, Steve. In the past the Scots were a Footballing country, but that's in the history books
ross from Wee Ryan headed wide by Nisbet from a nearly impossible angle
It's given as a corner
Corner from wee Ryan headed out
Yeah - back in our youth, all of the big teams had a scouting pipeline up into Scotland. Doesn't exist today.
That's it and despite a lot of commitment from the Scots the Czechs win 0-2 thanks to a double from Paddy Schick as the Scots were well and truly shaved
That's it - a sad day out for the Scots at Hampden on their return to the Euros. The Czechs have put themselves in a good position to qualify out of this group.
