Argentina vs. Mexico

I suppose it's too much to ask the footie gods to bring us a Mexico win today? Yes, probably. I'm not going to use up much mojo today on this lost cause. I'll only issue a perfunctory "Viva Mexico."

GOAL: 1-0 Mexico. What a start! Another early goal, from a corner, knocked on and the thuggish Marquez at the back post to roof it. Wow!

3:09 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And Crespo ties it up from a Riquelme corner. Game on!

3:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Actually it looks to be an own goal from Borgetti.

Wow, I just got in 1-1!!!!

Yeah, you can't show up late for these matches this time around. Most of the goals are being scored in the opening half hour or so.

It's been a cracker - Mexico really taking it to them.

3:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Just wide from Crespo - nice move leading up to that.

The game has settled a bit, which can only benefit Argentina. But Mexico have been as good as I've seen them so far. Good end to end stuff.

I'm not sure about this keeper Abondonzieri - he may be the weak link for the Argies. He doesn't seem to want to come out and collect. I'll have to look at the goal again, but I reckon he might have been somewhat at fault.

3:39 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Pavel Pardo is coming off to be replaced by Torrado - an injury?

3:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Shouldn't that have been a red card on Heinze? Last man back? Cheating ManYoo bastard!

3:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It would be due justice for Mexico to score from this free kick....

But straight into the wall. And that's half time. 1-1.

3:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see the ref? He pointed to the other defender that was coming back.

3:51 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

shit, i was taking a nap and overslept the first half.

1-1. i'll watch the first half hilights.

i'm just really screwed up on jetlag.

Well, the teams came out... the stood for national anthems... then they kicked off!!!

forget this game... England vs France from 1992 with Trevor Brooking being the color man

3:59 PM

I agree, AZ. Mexico did what they needed to. They caught the Argies in a complacent mood and really took it to them. They may have been able to stick a couple in there if Borgetti had been more accurate. And that horrendous foul by Heinze saved an almost certain goal in on the keeper alone.

If England meet the Argies in the final, I hope they can use the Mexico performance as a blueprint. However, it always seems as if they have an answer to everything Mexico throw at them. It would take a very, very late Mexico goal to catch them off-guard now.

Okay, you know the Adidas ads with the Latin kids playing a kickabout with all the greats? Well, what exactly is the song? It sounds as if they're singing:

"If you try and get the ball off me, I'm gonna get a kick on you?" Are my ears deceiving me?

4:02 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sorry, Gooner, I didn't realize you were napping. I would've called you.

4:03 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I saw the ref pointing at the other defender, Dave, but there is no way that he would've stopped the Mexican player. He was off to the races if Heinzes hadn't hauled him down - definite red card.

On a comletely different subject. I just got website from my sis Debs.
Lots of 80s videos
JHJ, KaTW, Kate Bush

Will do, Dave. Cheers.

Bizarre moment there. Riquelme was hacked. He pulled up lame, the Argies knocked the ball out and the ref gave a throw to Mexico without even looking at him.

4:11 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Neither side has looked good so far in the second half. It won't be long until they change things. You can't leave Messi and Tevez on the bench forever.

4:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Que?

4:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Dave está durmiendo. Él es un idiota.

Nearly there for Borgetti. Shame.

4:17 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

good stuff from borghetti. wish he'd finished that. love to see extra time and pens on this one to tucker these argies or even mexico out.

4:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, wouldn't you love this one to go all the way. Love it. I reckon that fancy pants Riquelme is good for a wild pen miss.

4:18 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

riquelme caught the bus getting on that shot. i could have caught a flight to liepzig in time to block that down.

4:19 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Pekerman must see that Tevez is a better option than Riquelme at this stage - he's shattered.

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great save from Sanchez from Saviola.

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Argies are piling it on rather ominously now. The Mexicans may be running out of gas.

4:22 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

all kidding aside, the argies don't look uncomfortable here. the mexicans are battling but so far, the argies look more likely, yes?

4:23 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i thought once riquelme was subbed off for aimar, argentina looked quicker and more fluid in their last match. because that's the missing element if there is one.

4:25 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, I agree Gooner, and yet as the minutes inch on, I reckon that they might want to change things. Mexico would love to see this one go to pens - no?

Guardano on the turf was time wasting, in my view.

4:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sorry, I was outside. Matt made me go kick the ball with him.
Si, esta con una amiga

4:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Mexico make another change because of an injury. Not good for them. Maybe Guardano was really injured.

4:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tell Matt that the bloody World Cup is on! Honestly, kids these days!

4:30 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

matty should be watching the world cup. sheesh!

4:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Heinze with a vicious elbow to Borgetti. Honestly, how many yellow cards does this thug get today?

4:33 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

someone should tell espn that that line "LIVE 2006 FIFA WORLD CUP Round of 16" needlessly obscures more of the screen.

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Argentina really don't seem to be going for it. Only fifteen minutes left - what are they waiting for, a gilt-edged invitation?

If Borgetti can poke one in at the 85th minute, I'm not sure they'll have a response.

4:36 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

La Volpe rolling the dice by using up his last sub - Zinha coming on for Morales.

4:36 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Enjoy it, AZ. Enjoy it. Who have you got - Motty?

4:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Aimar and Tevez are coming in finally!

4:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

argentina stating some purpose now. subbing on aimar to spell that lazy waster riquelme. now lets see what happens.

4:39 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

trev, there's no sponsor info in that line. just the second line of info is sufficient. you just don't see "LIVE 2006 NBA FINALS GAME 5" and we don't need that top line.

4:41 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

tevez is scaring me a bit here. imagine how the mexicans feel.

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Tevez mixing it up already - he's dynamite!

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Come on, El Tri. Hold out, you buggers!

the eight-year old in me loved hearing harkesy say messi and peckerman in the same sentence. snigger.

4:43 PM

excellent refereeing there booking the bystander and the scofflaw gets away...for the time being.

it was probably something that castro said.

4:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

what the hell. that's got to be a card. is the fix in for these argie criminals?

4:46 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Greta needs a whistle right away. this guy is more interested in kicking the ball away than attempted murder.

4:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

No way a penalty there. Even I wouldn't have called that against the Argies, and I hate them.

Nice chance for Fonseca....

Messi's now on for Saviola. Both sides going for it, trying for that late, late goal.

4:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

We'll be here tomorrow for the England match, Trev.

Argies have it in the net, but the ref has called it back. Tevez looked level.

4:55 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

onside... add that call to the liteny of complaint if the argies go down here.

4:55 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time - 1-1; we're on to extra time, lads.

Argies do look the more likely but this could easily go to pens. Even if the Argies pull this off, Mexico have done the rest of the teams a huge favor by stretching them to the limit, making them use their full squad and wearing Riquelme out.

4:57 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

excellent. make all 22 of these bastards run for 30 extra minutes here. and isn't riquelme still on? argies start a man down if yes.

mexico even money now i would say.

4:57 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am back... No in la cocina.
I have been watching it from the TV watching the kids in the pool.
I don't think it was offside. Do you?

Great run from Messi. Love that kid. We'd have him down the Elland...oh never mind.

What a goal

5:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Boy, that was better than Cole's

5:11 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

yes, but the difference is i don't hate joe cole.

c'mon mexico, something scrappy so that this ends in a lottery of penalties.

5:13 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

jesus, they just don't make them straight in argentina do they? did you see that clip from messi? if saviola was on, i wouldn't be surprized if he headbutted someone.

5:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Mexico seem really deflated by that wonder strike; I can't really see them getting one back now. You?

5:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Joe Cole's strike was a bit further out - more like forty yards. A better goal, I think.

5:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This one never touched the ground. The ball didn't bounce to him. He took it off his chest and then belted it. My vote goes for this one.

5:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This is the same ref as the England Sweden game, isn't it

5:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Who's the ref for tomorrow?

5:29 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Harkesy keeps on banging on about how great Heinze has been - what about that criminal foul in the first half, Harkesy?

5:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Five minutes left - Viva Mexico!

5:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That should've been Torrado's second yellow.

5:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, Harkesy, Messi is exactly like Tab Ramos. That's like my saying, "Yeah, that Nesta bloke reminds me a lot of this guy I used to play with John Dorr." What a prat!

5:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It's over. Germany vs Argentina.

5:35 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

2-1 Argies. Shame, but at least they were stretched.

5:35 PM

Ok fellas, remember I am going to be watching the game with a little delay tomorrow.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!

PS Make sure you take a look at that website of videos.
