We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Now for some real footie action. I am pumped up for this one. "Barmy Army" is pumping and I'm set for the big one. I know you'll want to join me for this one.

Come on, England!

leave the england slags. if i could have found gabby in a kit that would have been a result. i'll keep looking, but it's good as it is.

bit of news, nurnberg temperatures at 30-32 centigrade today, roughly 91 fahrenheit. field temperatures are bound to be hotter than the ambient temp too. that's a setback.

91! Blimey, that isn't good. ESPN mugs are profiling Stern John now. Not a sniff, I say, not a sniff.

Here's the side for today:

ENGLAND
1. Paul Robinson

15. Jamie Carragher

6. John Terry

5. Rio Ferdinand

3. Ashley Cole

7. David Beckham

8. Frank Lampard

4. Steven Gerrard

11. Joe Cole

10. Michael Owen

21. Peter Crouch

As expected the same side that started against Paraguay except Carradona in for Gary Neville who is crocked. What do you reckon?

Players in the tunnel - Becks looking serious but confident. Let's go Golden Balls.

'Cello actually making sense by saying that Roon won't play until later and only if England are up and coasting. He's learning.

England doing the Brazil "We Are the World" thing with interlocking arms during the anthem. Very metrosexual, that.

Free kick to come from the same spot.

And over from Crouch.

12:25 PM

Nice take from Robbo, but I don't like even that close an attack.

12:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

good catch by robby

12:26 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

well in johnno. spector has impressed me so far.

england a little too measured as if they're worried about moving at too high a tempo in this heat.

i too thought owen's reaction was not sharp enough and that he could have got up and over the ball and nailed it.

12:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice cross but Crouch is wildly off the mark with the header.

12:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

they are not looking good right now.
SO many long driving balls.
WORK IT THROUGH THE MIDFIELD

12:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

we're missing a lot of attacking verve on the right. everything smacks of a lack of imagination and invention. we should have unlocked these guys by now more often.

12:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

What's the feeling of the English commentary crew Steve?

12:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Owen and Lampard almost got in each other's way on that last chance. Good knock down from Crouch.

12:32 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

it's clyde tyldsley and gareth southgate and they're not very informative. tyldsley is waxing on and on about how unfair it is that we laugh when someone takes a ball in the knackers and also chastising yorkie for drinking too much water in a drought.

then gareth squeals like a kid at the sight of rooney limbering up. surely not.

12:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Corner to come for England....

And Gerrard into Row Z

12:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

why are they taking short ones

12:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

OOOH, nearly from Lamps. Nice effort!

12:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

you know, it's ridiculous. in one breath clyde is whittering about lack of invention and in the next he's willing beckham on the corner to find crouch for a knock-down.

this really is half-paced. trini don't look half worried enough.

it's going to take more of that kind of shot from lampard to break down the back 8 that trini have set out.

12:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

that was too close

12:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I did not like that at all!

12:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And another headed chance for T&T - as usual we're going to have to sweat this one out.

12:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

this doesn't look good.
England haven't scored in the second half for YONKS!!!

12:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

OOOOOOHHHH, Lamps what are you doing?

Pretty move with the wrong finish. We should be two up.

12:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

FINISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12:46 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

chance after chance here spurned by horrible lapses of technique.

and the chant for rooney to come on starts up.

not going to plan

12:47 PM

gareth makes a good point that sven's dithering about will-he, won't he re: rooney has put a lot of pressure on crouch.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Half time 0-0; The coverage back here is all about how bad we're playing; I actually think we're doing well but should be three up. Did you notice that ball that Lamps whistled into the goal as the half time whistle went. Why couldn't he do that when it mattered?

12:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Come on, Trev. Any of us could have finished the chances that Owen, Lamps and Crouchie missed there. Jesus!

Nice line from Waldo, but he can still sod off.

1:02 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

C'mon England!

1:09 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

england's doing this all wrong and much of this is erickson.

he's sent them out telling them not to run themselves into the ground in the heat. he knows with a formation like what trini is showing that they've got 8 or 9 banked up at the bank.

And you simply cannot break that down if you don't go at a reasonable rate of speed. Look at what trini are doing, tackling fiercely and the ref is doing us lots of favors. but instead of pushing up and taking those frees quickly and pinginig the ball around, becks is still placing the ball, having a look, and then floating it into a forest of trini tees. you think that the trinis haven't noticed crouch? or that crouch knocks it down to owen?

trini have their strategy down. set pieces.

Right now, the English have to talk about pace and movement, of the ball and the players.

they've just interviewed beenhaker and he's said that he considers this job done. he says that the english are as predictable as he expected. when he says that we're lacking in ideas, you have to believe that it's not the players that he's talking about, it's sven.
i swear he's already lit up a cigar the smug git.

i'd bring on lennon right now and run at them, time and again. and when he gets shagged, bring on theo and run and run. the trinis can only knock them down and that sets up more chances for us.

c'mon england!!!!!!! these trinis are just the worst. we must set out our stall now.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Yellow card for Shaka for time wasting.

1:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

take Cashey off

1:10 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A bit early for the post-mortems, Gooner. I reckon if we play the same way, long balls and all and finish the chances we'll be fine. We made plenty of chances, but we haven't made Shaka work as hard as he did against the Swedes.

1:11 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'm over to Uni now; I can't stand these berks.

1:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

FRom the beeb

47 mins: The early signs are that England did not get a half-time rollicking from Sven-Goran Eriksson or find a secret stash of kryptonite in the changing room. It's moribund stuff summed up by an aimless Ashley Cole pass to... nobody.

1:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

how could crouchie let that hit him

1:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

We're actually playing worse this half! The nerves are setting in

1:16 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i just cannot agree. if it's harsher than you can accept at the moment i can sympathise. i'm seething at this. we are watching a great generation of english footballers underperform terribly and it's the instructions. it has to be.

if we keep launching missles at crouch, we're looking at 0-0.

just look at what happens when trini break quickly.

we must change this now.

1:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

another hopeless cross from Cash.

1:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Another finish for the blooper reels from Crouchie. Get him off!

1:17 PM

ROONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

ROONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And now Owen's been hammered.

Yellow card for Gray.

Sven's giving instructions to Roon - they probably sound like: "Ball, stick, net."

Oh, another sitter missed by Owen. Shite!

1:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

here comes rooney. and lennon. owen and carra to go?

here's something to cheer me up. 5 trinis on yellows in this match now.

1:20 PM

Glad to see the back of Owen. He actually took that last chance away from Becks. What a stinker!

1:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, and Lennon on for Carra - it's balls out now, lads!

1:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Univision guys are referring to Becks and Crouchie as "Spice Boy" and "Mr. Roboto." Hilarious!

1:22 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Brilliant run from Lennon but a hopeless ball ballooned over the area.

1:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

hopeless cross by cole again!!!

1:26 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

it's already better though.

trini play this way against the us when all they have to do is defend against mcbride and landycakes. they don't have any where to go.

1:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Bugger! Yellow for Lamps for a late challenge. The final balls from Lennon and Cole must be better.

1:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The good news is Rooney looks good and strong. Several good passes and the tackle through the back of him didn't phase him at all. Just got up.

1:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

i'll tell you, we are not going to beat Sweden

1:31 PM

1:57 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I agree, the floodgates have opened.
Let's hope for a draw or Para win in the next game and England win the group

Off to work as well

1:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

It all depends on who we meet in the Round of 16. If we get Ecuador, I'd agree with Sir Trev's inclusion of Lennon. He did look good coming off the bench today, gave us lots of width and set up several good chances.

If we're unlucky and draw Germany, I think Lennon might be a luxury. The real crucial question is who to play with Rooney - Owen again looked out of sorts and missed at least two good chances that I think Roon would've buried. It was a shame he didn't get a tap in today. And Crouchie scored. How do you leave him out?

Otherwise I'd keep the same side for the next two matches.
