Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Cricket World Cup 2007

I'm really enjoying the Cricket World Cup, which is in it's quarterfinal stages and will wind up on April 28th in the West Indies. All the matches are One-Day Internationals, which adds to the excitement. So far the Aussies are the team to beat, with England languishing in fourth spot and struggling to make the semis. Sound familiar? You can follow matches live at:

New Zealand and Bangladesh are on now - enjoy!

It's a bit sad about the West Indies in this competition. They're hosting, many of the games played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and they're just plain rubbish. They've only won one game in the Super Eights and have lost three in a row.

I remember watching Viv play at Lords in the 70s and he was as majestic as any athlete that I'd ever witnessed live - a king of the wicket.

The West Indies were doing very well in the group stages.
Why have they played so many games so far and England have only played one.
England have two important games coming up. Sri Lanka and the 'orrible Aussies.
The Aussies struggled against us in the finals of the one day series downunder.

Actually the confusion has to do with the way they count games in the Super Eights. All of the teams have played either one or two games in the Super Eights, but they also count the games played against quarter-final teams in the Group Stages, so England is listed as Played 2, Won 1 and Lost 1 (against NZ in the group stage). Weird eh? Yeah, England are up against Sri Lanka on Wednesday and then the Oz on Sunday. Tough matches, for sure.

I knew that they took the result of the game against the other team that made the second round.

Stil, the West I. have played three games in round 2 and England have played one

Yeah, that's true and they've all been against the top three teams, which explains their lowly position. I reckon they'd all choose to play Ireland and Bangla every day. For some reason they scheduled three Windies games in about five days and then they had a week off - I have no idea.

It's all gotten a bit predictable in the past few days really. The Aussies ran riot over Bangla on Sunday in a rain-shortened match, Sri Lanka beat up on the Windies and NZ were brilliant yesterday. Today's match has been rain delayed but I fully expect South Africa to beat Ireland. Interestingly, both teams are playing in green - whatever happened to cricket whites?!

England are up today against Sri Lanka, their first real test in the Super Eights stage. They started well, getting the key wicket of Jayasuriya fairly cheaply and keeping the Lankans to 234, but they're making hard work of their own innings, having already lost one wicket in the first over.

After the fall of the two openers, England have picked up the run rate and are now right on track. This is a crackiing match, the first really competitive match in some time during this World Cup.
