Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

What Song Was #1 on your Birth Date?

I've just come across the coolest app on Facebook that shows you which single was #1 on the US or UK charts on your birthdate. Mine for January 11, 1964 was Bobby Vinton's immortal "There I've Said it Again." To check yours out, just plug in "What Song Was #1 on your Birth Date?" into the search engine and you're away. And post your results here. Have fun!

Frankie Laine in the UK, and Jimmy Dean in the US. Born under a bad sign.

The number one song on my birthday, December 17,1965 was Turn,Turn,Turn by The Byrds. The number one song on my wife's birthday, August 30,1966 was Sunshine Superman by Donovan.

I think you've got us beaten on the coolness stakes, MUR. I've got both of those tracks on my iPod. No sign of Bobby Vinton, Frankie Laine or Jimmy Dean (the sausage guy?), sadly.

Of course the Gooner and I are saddled by having been born before the Beatles broke in the U.S. some six months after my birth. Nothing would be the same afterward.

Billboard Number One in the U.S. - Chapel of Love - The Dixie Cups.

Number one in the UK - Cilla Black - You're My World

Golden oldies!

US #1 song was "Everybody Loves Somebody" by Dean Martin. Ugh. UK #1 song was "Do Way Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann. Much better!

I took the liberty of having a look at UWS Dave's birthday and I reckon he's got us all beat:

UK Chart: House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

US Chart: I Get Around - Beach Boys

More proof of my theory that everything changed post Beatles Stateside.

The UK chart definitely seems hipper. The #1 for my birthday - 1/11/64 - was

"Glad All Over" by The Dave Clark Five. Much cooler than Bobby Vinton IMHO.

I agree. The UK chart seems much hipper. The number one for my birthday - 12/17/1965 - was

"Day Tripper/ We Can Work it Out" by The Beatles
A British ban topped both charts that day .

The number one song on the UK chart for my wife's birthday 08/30/1966 -was
"Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles.

You Beatles theory just yielded some interesting results. Is this a sign that my wife and I were meant to be? one of life's mysteries. Coincidentally, I have listened to those songs so many times that I can practically sing them in my sleep. A married couple with Beatles birthdays. Definitely more interesting than Donovan.
