Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Who Broke out the Voodoo Doll?

Holland's Arjen Robben became the latest high profile footballer to fall victim to the World Cup curse when he tore his hamstring in a friendly against Japan on Saturday. Here's a list of the super crocks and their current statuses:

Jozy Altidore (USA) Ankle - will miss Saturday's match against England
Michael Ballack (Germany) Ankle - out of SA 2010
Julio Cesar (Brazil) Back - out of Group Stage
Ricardo Clark (USA) Hamstring - out of Group Stage
Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) Broken elbow - has had surgery/hopes to recover
Michael Essien (Ghana) Knee - out of SA 2010
Rio Ferdinand (England) Knee - out of SA 2010
John Obi Mikel (Nigeria) Knee - out of SA 2010
Andrea Pirlo (Italy) Calf - out of Group Stage
Arjen Robben (Holland) Hamstring - out of Group Stage

What on earth is going on?!

Add to that growing list Gareth Barry, who has now been ruled out of Saturday's match with England. I suspect that Stevie G. may be played in the holding role with Joe Cole out wide left, Lennon wide right and Lamps running down the middle.

I'd prefer to not have a holding player against either Algeria and Slovenia, so perhaps we won't see Gareth until the Round of 16 - if at all?

You forgot Beckham and Davies for the US.

Look, what I don't understand is why they need to scrimmage at all. Or if just a bit, then against some handpicked opponent that won't send some psycho like Moore or Grella out headhunting in a nothing encounter like the US vs Australia. Even the Japanese guy that headed two into his own net was careering about recklessly during the England game.

Maybe the thing is to make the coaches pick the squads earlier so you don't have some idiot on the bubble charging around ending people's world cups.

Yeah - agreed. At least the scrimmage that England had today was against some no-hoper pick-up side as you were saying. And Rooney got a goal. So, there's something for that.

I was just counting the players who had been injured since the season ended. If we're counting all the crocks, we'd be here all day.

Of course, Rooney also got a yellow and had to be calmed down by Stuart Pearce on the sideline!

More injury updates today:

Mexico's Rafael Marquez, Serbia's Nemanja Vidic and Slovakia's Martin Skrtel all are on the comeback trail and seem likely to be ready for their respective World Cup openers.
