Crikey! Don Fabio Gives Kevin Davies the Nod!
The Montenegrans will have to put in an extra order for protective headgear as the news out of Lancaster Gate today that Don Fabio has included Bolton's 33 year old bash-about striker Kevin Davies in his squad for next Tuesday's qualifier at Wembley. Are English strikers really that thin on the ground?
Here's the squad in full:
Keepers: Ben Foster (Birmingham City), Robert Green (West Ham United), Joe Hart (Manchester City
Defenders: Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa)
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Joe Cole (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Forwards: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Davies (Bolton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Name your starting XI from that lot, eh gents?

So why not a recall for Joey Barton and Banjo-boy? And while you're at it, Karl Henry of Wolves.
Pathetic.
My XI would be
Hart
ACole Ferdinand Terry GJohnson
Lennon, Barry, Gerrard,
Rooney
Bent, Crouch
I'd say Wilshere, but I don't want to risk any more Arsenal injuries and he's been picked and is a sure-thing to be played by Psychos under-21s.
I agree with the main thrust of your side, Gooner. Montenegro is my darkhorse side in the group; I think they're better than most realize. I hope Fabio has done his homework on them.
The only changes I'd make to your line-up is Adam Johnson (who's in rip-roaring form for Citeh) rather than Lennon and Wilshere (sorry) rather than Rooney. If Wayne can't get a game for United these days, why should he start for England?
Hands off Jack! Arsenal have given enough to international FA's who have proved themselves poor custodians of our players. I'm not talking about the dice throw about injuries. I'm talking about calling up our just-back-from-knack, or even not-quite-back-from-knack players. I'm talking about running our guys out for 90 minutes in friendlies days before League or CL matches. Unless that changes, the Domenechs, Marwiks, and del Bosques of the game can just go get stuffed.
I just haven't seen Adam Johnson enough (mostly because I cannot abide Citeh) so I'll defer to your pick there.
OK, case in point. Those sods from Spain have called up Cesc who through injury missed crucial Premiership matches lost partially because of lack of leadership. We face as stern a CL group stage test as we're likely to be presented with back to back fixtures against Shakhtar, and then on Sunday the 24th, Citeh away after the typically bruising encounter versus Brum on the 16th.
You just know that Del Bosque will run Cesc out for at least an hour if not the whole match.
And if he re-aggravates that hammy, and is out for ages, what will we get? Just abuse from hacks like Kevin McCarra moaning about the lack of killer instinct at the Em.
Cor - you whinge more than Arsene! ;-}
But in a less annoying accent, you have to admit.
Before I name my starting XI I would like to know what was Cap thinking when he named Kevin Davies to the England squad. He is a journeyman striker who is past his prime. His style of play is not suited to the international game. I think Tom Huddlestone will be an excellent bench warmer if he has two benches to warm. Now for the starting XI:
Joe Hart
G Johnson Ferdinand Terry Cashley
A Johnson Wilshere A Young
Gerrard
Crouch Bent
I know that most people would not pick the same starting XI, but youth should be given a chance and people like Rooney need to know that poor form will result in removal from the starting lineup.
News out of Blighty today has Phil Jagielka and Aaron Lennon out of the squad for injuries. Gary Cahill and Stuart Downing will take their places in the squad but hopefully not in the starting side.
