We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
The Love Affair is Back On!
Blimey - what was all that about? Roon and Ferg have kissed and made up leading to a new five-year contract for the ManYoo striker. Now does that mean that Roon will be able to play footer again? We'll soon see. Join me from 7 am onward for the usual LOB Saturday morning chatter.

I'm back and looking forward to a tasty day of the footer. It is true that most of the good games are tomorrow. And Leeds play on Monday. However, there is plenty to get worked up about today, starting with Spurs v. Everton in just a moment.
Unfortunately, I'll be a wee bit hampered today in that I'm without my beloved laptop, which has had to go into the shop again. So, I'll be racing back and forth between rooms to watch and comment. Should get some good exercise today!
It's 7:37 am and the scary hunting show is still on ESPN2. Not much of a preview this morning.
Good morning BD.The news is a surprising change of events. The teams are out about to come out of the tunnel after the fishing show.
The teams for the match-up at Shite Fart Lane this afternoon:
Spurs: Heurelho Gomes, Alan Hutton, Younes Kaboul, William Gallas, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaron Lennon, Wilson Palacios, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart, Peter Crouch
Everton: Tim Howard, Seamus Coleman, Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin, Phil Neville, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Johnny Heitinga, Steven Pienaar, Leighton Baines, Ayegbeni Yakubu, Tim Cahill
Morning, MUR. Yes, we're ready to go now with Jon Champion and Stuart Robson on the mic this morning.
I meant to say fishing show. How will Spurs perform after that crazy match at the San Siro where Gareth Bale scored an unlikely hat-trick in a losing effort.?
Both sides is good form now, Everton fresh from the win in the Merseyside Derby and Spurs from that crazy 4-3 match with Inter. Spurs sit in 5th; Everton in 11th.
Good question, mate. So how was your week?
Jon Champion stated that Roon will earn $300,000 per week. VDV was suspended for the match against Inter. He would have loved to have participated.
That's typical Harry Redknapp wit. Gareth Bale used to be "too worried about his hair."
My week was just as crazy as that match at the San Siro. How was your week?
What are your thoughts about Rooney? Was it all a ruse to get a better contract are there some real underlying issues still to work out?
I will need to leave at halftime to take my daughter to an audition for a regional band.
Not so bad. It's going to get crazy after this week, though. Conference season. And I've decided to visit the Gooner for the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert fest next weekend.
Sounds like fun - what instrument does she play?
I am not sure what to make of this. I thought Roon was on his way out for being a disruptive influence. This is all a surprise.
Moment of silence now at the Lane.
It surprised me too - he did a very good impression of a player who wanted out. What was all that chatter about United not having big enough ambitions. You've only won the championship, FA Cup and Champions League in recent seasons. What does he want?
So Everton get us underway at the Lane. Let's hope it's a good one.
Everton should definitely be the fresher of the two. Apparently Spurs didn't arrive back in the UK until 5 am Thursday after their adventures in Milan.
It is still only 0-0. Young Seamus Coleman is an exciting player who will create problems for the Spurs defense.
Everton with some good early possession but it has been a slow start to the match. No real chances as yet in the first ten minutes.
I agree. This is a quite a bit different from the midweek CL match against Inter.
Palacios is booked for a foul on an Everton counter. Not surprising that he is the first player booked. Gomes easily gathers the free kick.
Yes - it's a worry for a player like Palacios to pick up a booking this early. Cahill hits the first real shot at goal. Gomes collects.
Gomes saves easily from Cahill's long range effort. Gomes has been on the pitch longer than he was in the entire CL match on Wednesday.
That is two consecutive free kicks from VDV that have been dealt with easily by the Everton defense. Perhaps Bale should start to take some free kicks.
Timmy does well to tip Modric's long range effort around the post. The corner is cleared. It all started from Bale's long throw.
Spurs are finally starting to click here. Luka Modric produces a good save from Timmy. And the crowd is starting to sing.
Everton have a free kick just outside the penalty area after Kaboul fouled Pienaar.
GOAL! Leighton Baines hits a fantastic free kick that dips over the wall and leaves Gomes rooted to the spot.
0-1 Everton!
GOAL !!! WHAT A FREE KICK BY LEIGHTON BAINES! HE CURLED IT AOUND AND OVER THE WALL LEAVING GOMES MOTIONLESS . 0-1 TO EVERTON.
Everton are now in control of this match. Spurs will need to make sure that their defense is more solid than in midweek.
That goal will move Everton up to 6th. Impressive after their horrible start to the season.
GOAL! Something out of nothing. A hopeful cross overhit by Hutton somehow fools Timmy and he spills it under a Crouch challenge. VDV cleans it up for the equalizer.
1-1!
GOAL 1-1 VDV SCORES AFTER TIMMY MISJUDGES THE CROSS FROM HUTTON. A TERRIBLE MISTAKE FROM TIMMY ALLOWS VDV TO SCORE AN EASY TAP IN FROM TWO YARDS OUT.
This game has a nice fizz to it now. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
It seems as if there is never a dull match involving Spurs.
Pienaar is down injured after a collision.
I agree - Gooner won't like me saying it but I usually enjoy watching them.
The match is restarted with a drop ball that Everton kick straight to Gomes.
Modric shot just wide, but I think Timmy would have saved the shot had it been on target.
I'm quite enjoying Stuart Robson's contributions as a color guy. I don't really remember him as a player, do you? But he seems quite insightful and knowledgeable about the game.
Big shout from Crouch for a penalty. Bit of sandwich in the box. Referee not impressed. The Little Neviller and Jags might have got away with that one.
Peter Crouch appeals for a penalty. I think it was just two players bumping into each other.
I remember Stuart Robson playing for the Hammers and the Gunners. He made his league debut during my senior year of high school for the Gunners. I think he played as a right back and on the right side of midfield.I remember his debut because it was on Match of the Day.
Baines has another chance from a free kick but can't find the other angle.
Sounds like he's another player that I missed out on during what I like to think of as the Dark Ages - the time between my arrival in the States in 1982 and the beginning of regular footie coverage after WC 1994.
That is interesting because the Dark Ages occured during a similar time period for me.
Two minutes of stoppage time. Crouchie heads straight to Timmy from close range as head a free header.
Oh - Crouch should have scored there. It may seem odd to say, but he's never been that great a header of the ball. Sure, he's enormous and will get to most things and win most challenges. But he doesn't seem to be able to direct his headers where he'd like them to go. That was straight at Howard.
Crouch is called for a high boot on Pienaar.
It is 1-1 as the half ends. I am off to my daughter's audition. I may be back for one of the later matches. Take care BD.
It's incredible to think about the difference between the mid-80s and today in terms of coverage. I used to tune into the BBC World coverage on a tiny short-wave radio during those days. Then in the 90s, when Fox Sports World started, I used to hike down to a local Irish pub before FSW came to my system. These days, I'd argue that we get more live football on the telly than in the UK!
Cheerio, mate. Catch you later. Half-time at the Lane. 1-1. Decent match here. Lots of chances for both sides. Everton have slightly edged it for me in terms of possession and overall threat.
Interesting variation on the half-time studio chat. It's Jon Champion alongside Stevie Mac in what looks like a rather breezy and raw Shite Fart Lane stand. Brrr.
Smart move there from Harry Redknapp. As the teams come back out, he's replaced Wilson Palacios with former Inter stopper Sandro. Palacios was booked early and was on thin ice with the ref toward the end of the half.
Bit of a ping pongy start to the second half.
Great knock-down from Bale and Kabboul and Billy Gallas were lurking there.
Everton have JB up off the bench warming up. He's yet to get off the mark for the Toffees in the Premiership. I'd love to see him stick one in today.
It's all over at Pittodrie and Aberdeen have defeated Hibernian 4-2 in a wild match.
Luis Saha has replaced the Yak, so JB will have to wait his turn today. Half an hour left to play.
You sense that both sides are playing it a bit more cautiously now. They'll know that one mistake could mean dropping three points.
Pavs has come on to replace Aaron Lennon and to bolster the attack. In truth, it wasn't Aaron's best match. Gareth Bale has switched sides.
And now Sandro goes into the book.
Tony Hibbert has come on - not quite sure who he replaced yet. Perhaps it's Seamus Coleman, who MUR highlighted earlier in the match.
Inside the last ten minutes at Shite Fart Lane now. Everton, methinks, would be happy with a point at this stage. That would have them comfortably in mid-table.
Hello BD. I am back for the conclusion of this match.
I did not miss any goals. Spurs win a corner.
Everton clear the corner from Bale and Asiou-Ekotu shoots high and wide with a wild shot.
Tim Cahill is struggling now. He was caught by Sandro a while back and he's going to be replaced by JB. About eight minutes for the Leeds boy to make an impression here.
JB is on for Coleman. BD will get to see the Leeds old boy.
JB commits a foul and Spurs attack.Gomes catches the cross.
I am surprised Spurs were not scheduled to play tomorrow.
Crouch's header creates panic in the Everton defense as Two consecutive Spurs shots are blocked, then Bale heads wide.
This match is winding down to what seems like an inevitable draw now.
Three minutes of stoppage time as Crouch makes another pathetic attempt to win a penalty.
Gomes struggles to punch away the free kick from Baines and Tony Hibbert shoots well wide. No wonder why he has never scored an EPL goal.
The final whistle signals the end of the match that ends tied 1-1.
Full-time: 1-1 in the end. Everton probably the happier of the two teams, despite giving up a lead through an unfortunate goalkeeping error.
Spurs are left in third but will give United and Arsenal - both of whom play tomorrow - the chance to leapfrog them.
Off to the shower before the 3 pm GMT kick-offs start. Back in a tick.
I'm setting up to watch Chelski v. Wolves on FSC now. There should be some goals in this one if the officials can rein in Mick McCarthy's thugs.
Didier Drogba returns to lead the Chelsea attack against Wolves in their clash at Stamford Bridge. Drogba has missed the last two games with a virus and he replaces Salomon Kalou, who drops to the bench. Jose Bosingwa starts his first home game in 13 months following knee problems. He replaces Paulo Ferreira at right-back. Wolves bring Richard Stearman into defence in place of captain Jody Craddock and Serbian Nenad Milijas replaces Chelsea's on-loan defender Michael Mancienne in the holding midfield role.
I agree. It should be an easy win for Chelski.
The teams kick off as Wolves are on the thick of a relegation fight.
The teams in full then:
Chelski: Petr Cech, Jose Bosingwa, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, Mikel, Yuri Zhirkov, Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda
Wolves: Marcus Hahnemann, Kevin Foley, Christophe Berra, Richard Stearman, Stephen Ward, Matthew Jarvis, David Edwards, Nenad Milijas, David Jones, Jelle Van Damme, Kevin Doyle
I think Wolves must be one of the favorites for relegation even though they were not one of my picks at the beginning of the season.
Welcome back, MUR! We're underway right on time for a change on FSC.
Wolves win an early corner as Cech punches clear off of a deflection.
Wolves win another corner.Cech punches clear from Jarvis as Chelski counter.
Hello BD . It is great to join you for this match.
In the Championship, Leeds don't play until Monday, so the big matches for me are the Yorkshire derby between Doncaster and the Blades later on, the relegation dogfight between PNE and Palace and the kickfest between Robbie Savage's Derby and the villainous Millwall.
Wolves have had three early corners. More ambition than I'd have predicted before the match.
Wolves have kept possession. Van Damme wins a corner off of Bosingwa.Van Damme misses the ball off of the corner from Jarvis.
I noticed that QPR were held by bottom of the table Bristol City yesterday and in midweeks escaped with a 0-0 draw against the Swans as the Swans missed a penalty.
Wolves appear to be well organized for this match. It appears that Mick has done his homework.
Reading have taken the lead at Burnley and Notts County have taken the lead at Colchester
I noticed that too. QPR are a bit off the boil. I still expect them to gain promotion. They've got the moneybags backing and could become a fixture in the Premiership in years to come.
Chelski are patient as they maintain possession ,looking for an opening. The pass from Anelka to Drogs had a little to much pace.
Chelski typically don't like to take matches to their opponents these days. Today's line-up is a bit of a variation from their typical one, but they've still got two holding mids in Essien and Mikel and the usual attacking triumvirate up front.
Great save from Marcus against Boswinga there. Chelski struck so quickly there.
Nearly 1-0 as Hahnemann does well to tip around the post from Bosingwa. Wolves eventually clear the corner after a header from Essien.
Fulham have the lead at West Brom with Zoltan Gera's shot hitting the post before striking keeper Scott Carson on the back and going in. It has been given as a Carson own goal.
The match is starting to open up after a slow start.
That's Fulham up into the European spots on twelve points in 6th.
I agree - Chelski starting to turn the screw a bit now.
Coventry have taken the lead against Barnsley and Millwall have taken the lead against Derby County.
Wolves struggled to clear the long ball due to Drogba's physical presence. Stearman had a tough time against Drogs.
Now Edwards fouls Cashley.
Mick McCarthy's having a jabber at the 4th official now. Not quite sure what's on his mind. You'd think he'd be yelling at his defenders who were, for once, a bit sloppy there.
Wolves escape again as Terry is flagged offside from a Drogs free kick. That would have been a free header.
Former Leeds loanee Gary McSheffrey has given Coventry the lead at home to Barnsley with a close-range finish.
Striker Steve Morison has put Millwall ahead at home to Derby with his seventh goal of the season from 25 yards after a fine passing move.
It seems to be a question of when will Chelski take the lead.
Youssouf Mulumbu's first goal for a year has put West Brom back on level terms at home to Fulham who had enjoyed the better start to the game. 1-1 now.
It feels like that, definitely, but Wolves have been brighter than I'd have credited them with.
That was a chance for Wolves as Edwards saw hid header saved by Cech, then Chelski win a corner.
The Tractor Roys have gone one nil down at the City Ground to Forest.
Wolves clear the corner. They have not conceded in the first twenty minutes of a match this season. Their problem must be in the remainder of the match.
Leeds have now dropped to 13th.
Van Damme saw his header saved as that is two crosses from the right.
Oh - Van Damme was nearly in but Boswinga did well to clear. This is not exactly going to script.
And as I type that, Florent Malouda pops up to score Chelski's first.
GOAL 1-0 CHELSKI AS THEY SCORE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT WOLVES CHANCE. A SIMPLE GOAL AS MALOUDA FINISHES FROM CLOSE RANGE AFTER A NICE PASS FROM ANELKA.
I thought Chelski were about to score.
That's what Chelski have been doing all season. They absorbed some of Wolves' best attacking of the match and then hit them with lightening precision. Great ball through to Zhirkov who pulled the ball back for Malouda to side foot home. Easy.
Chelski have outscored their opponents 41-2 in home league matches since February.
Chelski increase their lead at the top to five points ahead of Citeh, Arsenal and United's matches tomorrow.
Oh - nearly two-nil there as Drogba hits the side netting.
That's an ominous statistic, MUR.
2-1 Preston North End over Palace. That's a right old ding-dong at the bottom of the table. Three goals in less than half an hour.
Sunderland are ahead at home to Aston Villa thanks to an own goal from central defender Richard Dunne.
Sunderland have taken the lead against Villa through a Richard Dunne og. It is 1-1 between Preston and Palace.
I did not realize that Preston had taken the lead.
Scunthorpe haven taken a surprise lead at Watford. It is 1-1 between Plymouth and Huddersfield.
Capacity crowd at the Bridge today. That's a lot of footer for the capital to absorb. Along with that earlier kick-off at the Lane, Londoners have their choice of matches at Upton Park and the Den today.
The match is competitive as Chelski have four shots to three for Wolves.
Cech made a comfortable save from Milijas.
Yes - that second goal for PNE is Jon Parkin's second of the match and 100th for the club. The tubby striker scored a hat-trick at Elland Road recently in that 4-6 thriller.
Stearman is booked for a nasty foul on Drogs. He has struggled throughput this match.
Scunny have leapfrogged us - we've dropped to 14th. That's a little too low for comfort IMHO. I'd like to be in the top ten.
Chelski win the corner off the clever short free kick as they nearly scored. They do not score off the short corner as Marcus easily gathers the cross.
I agree. Leeds need a good result on Monday.
That corner from Drogs is poor and comes to nothing as Essien commits a foul.
Richard Attenborough(spelling?) is in the stands supporting Chelski. He has produced some fantastic documentaries.
Liam Ridgewell's close-range header has put Birmingham ahead at home to Blackpool.
Yes - I remember him best from his role in "The Great Escape." He is looking mighty frail in the stands.
Hi Fellas
I am back from my boys' soccer.
I saw the early matches goals but then had to left.
Off to check out the rest of the scores.
I have an SS link going through Justin!
Oh - Kevin Doyle had a half chance there. He needs to take those.
West Brom have taken the lead against Fulham through Fortune.
Morning, Dave. Good to have you on board. How are things in Glenville?
Good morning UWS!
West Brom have seemed fairly resilient this season. I had them favored for the drop.
The only match without goals in the Prem now is Wigan v. Bolton. Who would pay to be at the DW today, eh?
That was a great move by Chelski as Marcus blocks a Bosingwa shot with his feet Chelski maintain possession off the corner.
I think the match at the DW would be my last choice. The announcer stated that there will be one minute of stoppage time.
Preston are now 3-1 up as Palace are in trouble.
David Attenborough (his brother) did all the documentaries. Richard was the actor in the Great Escape, as mentioned, and Jurassic Park
It is halftime and only 1-0 as Wolves are putting up a brave fight against Chelski.
Thank you,UWS. I always get the two mixed up for some reason. Thanks for clearing that up.
Pompey take the lead late in the half
Norwich have taken the lead against Middlesbrough. Forest are 2-0 up against the Tractor Roys and Scunthorpe are now 0-2 ahead at Watford.
That is four goals in the Championship right before the halftime whistle.
When and who do Leeds play?
Just looked it up
Monday Night Football at Elland Road... against Risdale!!
There was news that Pompey were going to go out of business yesterday but SS just said that something will be signed tonight to save the club...again
Yeah - it's a big one and a nasty one. I expect that Ridsdale will get a hot reception...if he shows his face!
Second half starting up and Petr Cech better check the headgear. It's Stephen Hunt coming on for his Wolves debut!
It sounds like Pompey are going through the same kind of season Leeds had a few years back, desperately trying to keep the debt collectors from the door with deadlines every week. I feel for them.
I would like to see Pompey's fortunes improve.
The announce just mentioned the incident that occured while Hunt was playing for Reading. Hunt is booed by the Chelski fans.
Cashley should have done better there with a cross. Great through ball
Just saw that Stoke v United is on FSC tomorrow morning. I am going to miss it. I have to go to a two hour coaching course this afternoon and then a NINE HOUR one tomorrow!
Bob,
Did you get those jokes yesterday? Some made me chuckle!
Pompey score a second at Hull
PLAY UP POMPEY
We will miss you tomorrow,UWS. I know you will do well at the coaching course.
Sorry, mate. I'm without my laptop so I didn't have a chance to check them yet. I will do today - thanks for sending them along.
Cech saves well from Doyle as Wolves win a corner.
Chelski counter and the cross from Cashley is headed clear.
I'll be around again in the morning, so I'll keep the LOB home fires burning. United match up first and then Citeh v. Arsenal. Should be a cracking day of footer.
Chelski have been most dangerous on the counterattack. It is still only 1-0.
I will be around to contribute as well tomorrow morning.
This is starting to look like a Reading old boys club as Doyle, Hunt, and Marcus are all former Reading players. Is this a sign that Wolves will be relegated?
Cech easily gathers the cross from Hunt.
Birmingham are now 2-0 up against Blackpool.
Stearman heads over from a Jarvis corner.
A poor touch from Charlie Adam has allowed Nikola Zigic to put Birmingham 2-0 ahead at home to Blackpool.
Anelka shoots high and wide.
Zigic has now scored in two consecutive matches.
Portsmouth might be having plenty of problems off the field, but the players are not worrying about it as Wolves loanee Greg Halford's free kick has given them a 2-0 lead at Hull.
Wigan have taken the lead at the DW through Hugo Rodallega.
Blackpool now ominously close to the relegation zone on 10 points and only four off the dropzone.
Marcus did well to come out of his penalty area to tackle Drogba.
Berra headed well wide off the free kick from Berra. They have had opportunities from set pieces without troubling Cech.
Marcus did really well in the sweeper role as Drogs raced through.
Veteran Nicky Barmby has thrown Hull a lifeline by reducing the deficit to 2-1 at home to Portsmouth.
Here's a good trivia question for you lot. Journeyman Nicky Barmby has played for seven clubs in his career. Name as many as you can.
Reading have now gone 0-2 ahead at Turf Moor. It is now 1-1 at the DW as Elamander scored for Bolton.
Doyle flashed the header from the corner straight at Cech.
The Swans are now level with Norwich in third. They're 1-0 up over Leicester who are dangling around the relegation zone.
Barmby has played for Hull City,Leeds,Middlesbrough,Spurs,Leeds, and Liverpool. I will see If I can remember the other club.
