Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

It has to be said, Peru's shirts are the best design ever. Ajax's kits are cool, but that diagonal sash of red on the Peruvian's kit is even better. It's an Umbro design and they know their way around a kit and don't faff around like Adidas has, and don't put out kits just because they look good with jeans, like Nike do.
Has anyone read why Mexico sent the B's to this tournament? I always thought of the Copa America in the same light as the European championships, and I can't quite figure why they brought full force to the Gold Cup, and left everyone but Dos Santos out in this competition.
Someone in the crowd around the Mexican goalmouth has a noisemaker that sounds like a cicada bug on steroids.
Peru have opened the bidding with a series of long range shots, two of which have been unnecessarily parried by the Mexican keeper. He might be encouraged that the Peruvians hit their corners so deep to the other side that the ball can barely be chased down before going over the line for a throw.
Good work from the Peruvian wing and their center forward stabs the cross straight at the keeper. A chance, for sure.
Aquino for Mexico picks up the ball just inside the center circle and does a impression of "that" Ronaldo run. He passes it to a player on the wing who is incorrectly flagged for offside.
By the way, did you know in Spanish, the center circle is called the navel? Well, at least by this muppet.
A training ground set-piece where the ball is slipped down the side fails because whoever is supposed to run it down forgot his route. The ball rolls straight out for a goal kick. Arms wave, but whoever that was supposed to be doesn't own up to it.
Cicada man is really deliriously hitting that noise maker.
Guerrero for the Peruvians looks most likely. Aquino fills that roll best for the Mexicans. Dos Santos is also energetic and starting to express himself.
This is being played in Mendoza at El Estadio de Las Malvinas.
The replay shows that the Peruvian keeper collected a ball juuuusssssst a bit outside of the area.
Not a good two minutes for Peruvian keeping. It was a clear handball when he grabbed it outside of the area, and then he spills a very routine crossed ball from the wing, but the closest Mexican had over run it. Hoofed desperately out by a Peruvian defender.
Both teams suffering with their passing at the moment. Not a clinic for midfield accuracy.
Corner for Mexico and Gio.
And it's under hit short, the full back lunges for it and the ref blows for a foul. Awful.
You'd give Dos Santos credit for a chance there. They let him run, then shoot, but the keeper never looked uncomfortable.
Corner 7 for Peru inside of 40 minutes. Is that a lot? It seems like a lot. Nothing comes of it and the Mexicans streak down to about 25 yards out, check back, and lose the ball.
Cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada, cicada... Makes you long for those vuvuzuelas.
Man, I hope the Mexican chef has been grilling up some Clembuterol-laced burgers to serve at half-time because this is some really weak stuff here at the 40th minute.
Somewhere, Nobby Solano's just thrown his trumpet through his telly. Very tricky approach play and passing springs a full back behind the Mexican defense. He has time, and uses it to put the ball behind 1, 2, and 3 oncoming Peruvian strikers.
Mercifully, that's it for the half. Less than a full extra minute played.
The start of the 2nd half is delayed by the late arrival of the Mexican team. The ref charges over to the first 3-4 on the pitch as if he's going to book them. Shrugging and finger wagging ensue. We're off
The Peruvians controlling the midfield, the Mexicans snuffing out potential openings and then surrendering possession back to the Peruvians, who control the midfield until the Mexicans snuff out the opening but then surrender possession back to the Peruvians, who control the mid......
ACTION ALERT. A cross from the wing comes in and Guerrero heads just inches wide. He can't believe it. Neither can I. An actual opportunity.
That close shave has spurred the Mexicans forward. Not to any great purpose, but it's galvanized them a bit. I'd bet on changes within the next 5 minutes.
Some caveman named Galvin just can't bring down a cross and it's whooshed away for a Peruvian corner.
Good evening Gooner. I am in Dallas in my hotel room. Do you have a link for this match?
Ohhhh, so close. From a throw-in, the ball is knocked down to Galvin for Peru who hits it at the far post for a glancing touch and out.
It's all happening. A long ball catches the Mexican back four out and the keeper makes himself big and Guerrero hits wide.
From the corner it's headed out, but the Peruvians split the Mexican defense and Galvin dummies so that a fullback can come in and bash it into row Z
More from Peru and Guerrero. But again he hits the bejesus out of it and it's still rising. Goal kick
Hello Gooner. Could you give me a link for this match since I am out of town?
Now it's Mexico who get close. Gio dizzies his marker and then releases it wide to Pacheco who hits a cross that Marquez (the other one) heads poorly and over.
Pacheco has come on by the way and he's charging around which is momentarily stopping Peru from committing as many forward as they have.

That's the first one I found. Hit me again if that doesn't work. It's on Univision by the way.
Evening, lads. I'm going you late after a celebratory dinner to end the Summer Institute.
I can't believe that we've been treated to another nil-niller. WTF?!
Here's a link that I've got up with ESPN English language commentary:

The Mexican keeper uses his hands of stone technique and nearly gifts the easiest of touches. Galvin is swarmed and nothing comes of the gaffe.
I seem to remember a really funny When Saturday Comes cartoon from a few years back when Middlesboro went through a goal drought. It pictured two lads hanging out in the one's backyard. When asked about the two full-size goals in the man's backyard, the owner says, "I got them cheap. They weren't using them down the Riverside!"
Boom boom! You could use that one again for the Copa America - struth!
Vargas over a free kick here...
Oh - off the post! What a let off for Mexico!
Thank you very much lads. Peru nearly take the lead as the free kick comes off the corner of the post and crossbar.
You sometimes wonder why defenders swarm the ref after a foul like that. He's seen it, and he's much more likely to go for the pocket if he's got someone yammering in his earhole.
OOOOOOH, against the post from the free kick. Keeper forced to watch that. Peru should be 2-3 ahead and will rue all these misses if they don't quit faffing about.
I'm just reading over your comments, Gooner. I agree with you - the Peru kit is fantastic. I've always found the diagonal stripe quite classy, which is why I've liked recent classic diagonal striped kits for the US and Man Citeh away.
Boom Boom,BD.Great Middlesbrough joke.
Welcome aboard boys. I thought I was just entertaining meself tonight.
I'm disappointed. The studio guys fixed their insect problem from the first half, but you should have heard it.
I haven't got a Scooby about why the Mexicans have decided that this is the tournament to bloody the youth. It reminds me that Bob Bradley took the same posture last time around when we were invited guests. I wonder what the hosts think of that?
What did you think of the ref using chalk to mark the distance the wall should stand from the free kick. I have never seen anything like it, but it is easier to spot encroachment.
I guess Copa America is not taken as seriously as the Euro Championships.
Guevara tries from atop the Andes there. A wee bit ambitious but why not...?
Cheers, MUR - I'm glad you enjoyed it. The WSD cartoons are always champions. I especially like the Football Through History ones.
I am in Dallas where it is ridiculously hot. It was 105 at 6 in the evening. That weather is not fit for humans. It was 93 degrees at 10 Yesterday evening.
Or even the bloody Gold Cup! I suppose it means more for Mexico to qualify for the Confederations Cup? I dunno...
I'm amused by the ref's foam.
They're doing that in the MLS and there was a really classic moment this year with Josh Wolff in the wall. The ref sprayed a line, and walked away. Wolfy rubbed the line out with his foot and encroached. He got a yellow and an even more emphatic spray of foam in front of him.
We were out eating dinner and just arrived back a few minutes ago.
That is just appalling. I can remember suffering that kind of stoopid heat in Phoenix a couple of times. Not fit for habitation - you're right about that.
The Mexican keeper made two great saves as Peru had two opportunities to take the lead.
At least in Phoenix, at night it's dry and not so bad. Dallas is humid, no?
I hadn't noticed the foam trick but I like the sound of it - why not. A while back when Sky introduced the 10 yard zone indicator, it became even more obvious how players were conning the referees by encroaching.
Very brave keeping on the second chance. He must have known he'd take a kick there.
That it true - 105 and humid has got to be hellish.
It is hotter than Harlingen and I thought Harlingen was hot. The giorls went swimming twice today.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
Guerrero has pinched it for Peru!
Finally. Guerrero cleans up at the back post. The tactic of living on their nerve finally breaks down for the Mexicans.
GOAl!!! THE MEXICAN DEFENSE FAIL TO CLEAR A CORNER AND THE JOSE GUERRERO TAPS IN FROM CLOSE RANGE . WAS HE OFFSIDE?
Sloppy defending by the Mexican kids there. Guerrero stole in there all alone.
As the great Ray Hudson would say, "You'd have thought that Guerrero had some kind of communicable disease there!"
That might be enough for Peru as there is not much time remaining. Guerrero had a chance two make it 2-0, but shot high and wide.
I'll tell you what, MUR, if I had to face those conditions, I'd probably just live in the pool - or the ice machine.
Thinking about the importance of this tournament, it's got to be COMNEBOL's entry to the Confederations Cup, no? And if so, I guess the Mexicans by winning the Gold Cup have sealed their entry.
Dos Santos is offside as he desperately does what he can to get the equalizer.
Interesting point - if Mexico (or another guest) were to ever win the Copa, would the Confeds berth go to the beaten finalists? What if - perish the thought! - Mexico and Costa Rica were in the final? Would there have to be a hastily-arranged 3/4 playoff match to settle it?
Discuss.....
Of the B's, I'd say that only Pacheco, Aquino, and the other Marquez have earned a squad number in the full team. And none of them should start.
Spot on Gooner! You are correct about the heat? I sat in the shade to watch the girls swim and had to have my wife relieve me because I was feeling dizzy and ill.You are coorect about Mexico fileding a reserve team as the have clinched their cONFEDS cUP SPOT. What is their incentive?

Peru sleeping a bit here and the Mexicans are desperate for an equalizer.
Could that other Marquez's name be Rafa too? That's what it sounds like, no?
Marquez was through with just the keeper to beat , but was offside. He has a nosebleed for his troubles.
Peru corner flagging it now. They're moments from qualifying for the Quarters.
That's it and Peru have defeated Mexico 1-0 with a late winner from Guerrero.
Peru were the better team, but they should have romped this with all the chances they had. And it would have made for a more interesting spectacle if they'd scored a few to force Mexico out of their defensive shell.
Frankly, that was rubbish.
Well, that's about that, lads. I'll definitely be around for the Brazil match tomorrow. The Selecao have some work to do. I believe that it's a 4pm kickoff.
Mexico is pretty much eliminated from this tournament with two loses. Chile and Peru are through with Uruguay , possibly being one of the best third place teams.
Cheers BD and Gooner. I look forward to chatting with you throughout this tournament.
