Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The team news now out of Salvador:
Spain: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Ramos, Pique, Alba; Alonso, Busquets, Xavi; Iniesta, Costa, Silva. Subs: Albiol, Martinez, Juanfran, Villa, Torres, Fabregas, Pedro, De Gea, Mata, Koke, Cazorla, Reina.
Holland: Cillessen; Janmaat, Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi, Blind; De Jong, De Guzman, Sneijder; Robben, Van Persie. Subs: Verhaegh, Veltman, Kongolo, Kuyt, Clasie, Lens, Fer, Huntelaar, Wijnaldum, Depay, Vorm, Krul.
Teams in the tunnel now, all a-tingly. Let's hope this one is the cracker that it promises to be.
Marvelous atmosphere in the stadium now. Mostly oranje, perhaps?
And we're away in one of the most highly anticipated match-ups in the group stage.
For some reason, both teams are wearing their away kit. Holland are in dark blue. Spain are all in white. Not sure what that's about.
A real B team for this match on the commentary front. Adrian Healey chewing on his vowels alongside Tony Kay.
Very leisurely pace to this one so far.
Oh - Sneijder had a chance to score on his 100th cap and drilled it right at Casillas. The first big chance of the match.
Decent pop by Iniesta as Jordi Alba pulled the defenders out wide. Always rising, though.
First chance for Diego Costa but De Vrij did well. Not sure he feels comfy on his left side.
Hello Bob. I was on the other thread.
Alba can definitely be an outlet for the Spanish.
Welcome, mate!
Schneider should have given the Dutch the lead.
Nasty from De Jong - surely a yellow. No - more lenience from the refs. He should get a card just for his neck tattoo.
No it's Sneijder straight through the player. No card.
Cheers Bob.
The "Dutch Skunk" goes donw under a Ramos challenge and gets up surprised to see the free kick go the other way.
Pasta Rizzoli is the ref.
The Dutch seem to have a potent counter attacking threat, with the Spanish playing a fairly high line.
I'll have a bowl of that, MUR.
Both sides seem to be happy with a draw in this one. Robben has been down for an extended period.
Some naughtiness between De Jong and Biscuits as expected.
Silva was in there but was blocked out. Fairly accomplished defending from the Dutch so far.
Jon Champion vamping a bit there to try to inject a bit of excitement into this one.
Boos for Diego Costa seen as a traitor in Brazil.
Free header there for Ramos and he couldn't misstimed his jump. Remarkable miss.
Not surprised to hear those, MUR.
The corner from Xavi was uncharacteristically missed by Ramos.
The pace is so bloody labored in this one. It's like watching Serie A.
De Guzman is the first one into the book.
Penalty to Spain. De Costa uprooted by MUR favorite Ron Vlaar.
On the replay, I'm not sure that there was any contact.
Xavi Alonso steps up and scores!
1-0 Spain!
Another angle shows that Costa had his eyes on the ref as he decided to go down. More evidence of diving to mar this World Cup.
Spain definitely benefiting from having an orthodox target man.
That should open the match up. The Dutch didn't really look that fussed about it.
Oh - Blind with a great cross over but old man RVP didn't get on the end of it.
Nice cross from Blind that was missed by Ramos and should have been tucked away by RVP.
De Jong tries a rare shot on goal.
De Jong straight at Casillaa.
De Guzman in again. And he's on a yellow. Ref being very lenient.
De Guzman already booked with a naughty challenge. The first red card of the tournament?
Robben just offside from a through ball by RVP.
De Vrij dives in and picks up the second yellow.
Stefan De Vrij booked for a nasty body check on Silva.
A Hallmark performance by the Dutch?
Oh - Silva ran onto a ball that sliced through the Dutch defense. Cilessen did well with the chipped effort.
GOAL! Out of nowhere, RVP buries a lovely header!
1-1!
Nearly a two goal lead as Silva tried to chip the keepery.
I've been banging on all game about the dangerously high line that Spain were playing. Robben was flagged offside several times but that was bound to happen. Great ball from Blind and a terrific finish. Quality.
GOAL 1-1 as RVP headed superbly from a superb long diagonal pass from Blind.
Its 1-1 at the half.
Hey Guys
Didn't know if you guys were going to be on LOB today
Hey Guys
Didn't know if you guys were going to be on LOB today
A bit of argybargy between Lexi Lalas and RVN over the penalty at half time. I agree with the Dutchman, of course - a clear dive by Costa.
Hiya, Dave - welcome!
Out for the second half
COME ON HOLLAND
What did you make of the first half? Penalty or diving?
WHy did FIFA insist the change of colors for both
Torrential downpour now in Salvador.
I don't think it was either
I think he stepped on the leg and went down
Lexi is an ass
We were wondering the same thing, mate. Surely one of the teams could have worn their first kit. Red and blue or orange and white?
Lexi is an ass
Worse than yesterday's dive?
Well, the commentator just said FIFA made them
I like the commentators so far except for the Mexican game… he's an idiot
Decent pop by Iniesta there.
NEVER
Love to see Holland win the group
Spain take on Brazil
England beat Holland!!!
GOAL!!
ROBBEN PUTS THE DUTCH IN THE LEAD!!
I THOUGHT HE TOOK TOO LONG!
GOAL! Robben sticks the knife into Spanish hearts!
2-1!
Not sure why Piquet didn't know that he'd cut that back onto his left peg - he always does.
Now then...can Spain respond?
Stuns me… just let him go right!
Dutch player down in the box
He did headbutt him but he should have gone down like that
Can he be banned after the fact
Costa headbutted Martins Indi off the ball but I'm not sure that the Italian ref. No card.
GOAL 2-1 Boland as Robben scored a trademark goal turning Pique off a pass from Blind.
I assume that FIFA can review the tape and retrospectively ban him, right?
I have been getting some links for BBC and ITV coverage… love that I can do that for studio stuff
I have the BBC link for this match…it is ahead of the TV… come on ESPN
How was DiegobCosta not sent off for that terrible headbutt. Surely FIFA will suspend him.
Check out the BEin coverage in the evening. They've got Rodney Marsh and Ruud Gullit in the studio from Rio. Much better than the ESPN crew. And they're not even showing any games!
Totally agree… of course… the guy didn't have to go down like he'd been shot
Good afternoon UWS. Great to have you on board.
Don't have BEIN
RVP OFF THE BAR!!!!
OH - RVP rockets one off the bar!!!!
Oh. Off the bar from RVP. Great run by Robben.
Who does this keeper play for?
The Dutch keeper plays for Ajax. We're all surprised that Worm isn't the #1.
Pedro and Torres about to come on for Spain
Yellow card man De Guzman off for the Dutch
Is Krul in the squad?
And now Diego Costa is pulled off. FIFA may have something to say about the rest of his tournament.
The Dutch need to put another one in with these counter attacks
Yeah - Krul as well.
Boos for Costa. As he is replaced by Torres. Wijnaldum on for De Guzman.
YES!!!!!!!!!!
Bungled in at the back post!
BRILLIANT
That touch with RVP was just as much as yesterday
GOAL! Casillas makes a total hash of the cross and De Vrij came around the back and knocked it in.
3-1!
I was just saying that, mate. Pretty close to the one ruled out for Croatia.
RVP picks up a yellow card.
Commentator just talked about yesterday's non goal
Don't be stupid RVP!
3 goals in 20 minutes of play
KEEP IT UP HOLLAND
Goal 3-1 Dutch as Casillaa missed the free kick. From Robben and De veij headed in at the far post.
Phew… no goal
Weak clearance
Shot blocked
Offside!
Silva bundles one in but he's ruled offside. For once the officials got it right.
Love to see the other match get a winner so Spain are last!!!
Silva flagged offside as he had the ball in the back of the net as the keeper saved a header from Pedro.
Casillas ran up the pitch to complain and got a yellow card for his trouble.
Kick save by Casillas
This diving and bad decisions are just feeding the anti soccer american press
Mike and Mike were pathetic this morning
Some people were writing in and saying that it is part of the game … WHAT people should have written is that all the fans HATE IT TOO!!!
Was Casillas booked after the so called foul or the offside decision?
Tony Pulis
Crystal Palace manager on BBC Radio 5 live
Spain 1-3 Netherlands
Posted at
"Robin van Persie has fouled the goalkeeper. The referee will take some criticism for this and Spain have been very hard done by. If Louis van Gaal gets luck like this at Manchester United the fans will be delighted. How will Spain react?"
RVP booked for after with Ramos.
Sounds like you're pro-Dutch today. We're mostly pro-Dutch as well, only my dad is rooting for Spain. Don't know why.
YES!!!!!
Casiillas with a huge blunder
RVP!!!
WOW! 1-4!!!!!!
RVP now tied with Neymar with a brace.
Very much Dutch
I am fed up with Spain… hate the tickytak crap
I picked Holland to win the group
GOAL 4-1 asRVP tackled Casillaa and easily scored a brace. Laughable.
RVP ties up Neymar for the golden boot
SPAIN WERE WINNING!!!
Foul called
Torres missed anyway… of course
Iker Casillas had a nightmare in the Champions League final and he's had a nightmare here! A harmless backpass was rolled back to him. He had loads of time. Or that's what he thought. He took an abysmal first touch, the ball spinning a few yards away from him, and Van Persie was on him in a flash, nicking it away and then poking into the empty net before the covering defender could get back in time! Spain have fallen to pieces! Even Holland can't believe what's happened!
I like the spray for the wall and ball… they can't move!
Why does your centerback take the free kick!
Ramos curls a free kick wide.
Ref doesn't point to the spot as Torres goes down
He didn't really dive
Cesc comes on to boos from the Gooner.
On comes Fab
Stunned he went to Chelsea
Why didn't Arsenal get him back.. they had first refusal
Why didn't United get him
RVP comes off
Not much contact from Vlaar.
Weltman on for De Vrij.vCesc on for Silva. Boia from Goober. Jereman Lens on for RVP.
Keep it up Lous…. same at OT too
YES!!!
FIVE!!!!!!!!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
1-5!!!!
RVP ROBBEN AND NEYMAR ALL ON TWO
What a finish! He ran the full length, sold Casillas a dummy and then picked his spot in the top corner. Wowsers!
The Spanish defenders are all over the place!!
WHy would Robben come to OT and play for Louis and RVP
secret…. he still went left!!
I picked holland to win the group
I picked holland to win the group
I picked holland to win the group
What was Robben do there
Torres wins the ball but of course was too slow
WOW 5-1.Achneijder put Robben through on the counter.he did the rest beating three defenders then Cassillas. Ramos beaten for pace
Course he did - his right peg is just for standing on.
I am loving Spain being tortured
Connor: It's all about the underdogs come on England!
The Spanish fans are looking more than a bit silly now.
The goal difference is hurting them!
Should have been six… twice!!!
Oh - nearly six but for two wonder saves by the humiliated Casillas.
what a strike by Robben
Full volley!
Holland hit the bar too… could have been SEVEN
Add to that that FIFA may suspend Diego Costa for up to three matches and this is a nightmare for the Spanish.
If there were still ten minutes to go they could get TEN!!!
They look like they could score EVERY TIME
Great. Doubl Double save. From. Casilllaa
Robben is my pick for tournament MVP - looking good so far.
The Dutch simply ripping Spain apart!
El Nino should have got another consolation goal. Too clever. So Spain's only goal was a dodgy pen.
How did they not score again
and then Torres… OH MY!!!!
Looks a good call Bob
You going out for the next match or are you on LOB
Four minutes of stoppage time. Schneider slipped off a great run and pass from Lens then Torres missed a sitter
Can Spain recover like they did four years ago
Hope not
THAT'S IT
WELL DONE HOLLAND!!!
Great entertainment
We're on the LOB tonight and for the first match tomorrow. Going over to Johnno's in the afternoon.
Ruud must be dancing a jig
I'll be there
Rio, TH14 and Shearer with Linekar in the BBC studio
A memorable 5-1 win. I sure did not see this coming.
Bring Robben to OT LVG
These are the type of games we want!
Loving the BBC coverage too!
I'll be back for the later game
Will De Gea being between the posts for the next match
