Nice one, UWS. Let's hope that Colombia will take a bite out of Uruguay this afternoon. Still - I wish this one was Colombia v. England.

Yes, indeed, MUR. Originally I was hoping for a Round of 16 match-up between Colombia or Ivory Coast and England today and then a Brazil v. England on the 4th of July.

3:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I am one of the few people picked Colombia to go to the quarters for the first time ever in the World Cup.

3:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Me too. Did you see my most recent email?

3:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

In a pathetic move, the Uruguay officials have laid out Luis Suarez's kit in the dressing room today. They never learn, do they?

3:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I saw that and have corrected your point score. You're now tied with Matt after the group stage before today's result. And of course you've picked up three points so far today. So count that 37 points.

3:58 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes. That is really horrible. he is obviously guilty. I mean stonewall. How do you excuse that or condone that?

3:58 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ta, mate. If Colombia win then I'm up to 40, closing in on the leaders.

3:59 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They just said it's the first time since 1962 that four South American teams have played on the same day. They have had an awesome tournament.

4:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They're off from the Maracana.

4:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

COME ON YOU COFFEE GROWERS.

4:01 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Indeed - we're all pulling for Colombia today.

4:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I get three more points if they win today.

4:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

James Rodriguez has had one hell of a tournament. In the words of UWS, where's the quality. Look at James.

4:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Early free kick to Colombia, just outside the box.

4:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Muslera punches away the free kick from James.

4:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zuniga fouled from behind on the break by Cavani. Should have been a booking.

4:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good hit there from the free kick by Cuadrado.

4:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The free kick from about 40 yards out was deflected but the offside flag went up.

4:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's like a home match for Colombia as the fans are all going for Colombia.

4:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A long range effort from Zuniga was fumbled by Muslera then gathered.

4:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Zuniga tires a pop from forty yards - decent stop by Muslera allow it bobbled out. No one following up.

4:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Colombia defeated Uruguay 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier when Suarez wasn't playing . More of the same please

4:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd take a 4-niller.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Uruguay also lost 3-1 to the Ticos when Suarez wasn't playing. They are not the same team without him.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Well in mate.

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Is UWS taking an afternoon siesta? The pets are.

4:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WOW! the Coffee Growers have 71% of the possession. They need to make it count.

4:18 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Diego Godin heads out a long throw for a Colombian corner.

4:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - La Celeste are really under the cosh. They're really an average side without Suarez.

4:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jackson Martinez shoots wide after a header was blocked from the corner by James Rodriguez.

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Absolutely. I agree.

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Naughty by Arevalo Rios on Jackson Martinez.

4:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

A training pitch style corner there is ruled illegal for no apparent reason by the Dutch ref.

4:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zuniga shoots well wide from long range off a short free kick.

4:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

UWS is here but taking a break from blogging.

4:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Aguilar down off a clash with Christian Rodriguez. It seemed accidental.

4:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I hope he is watching the match. Any plans for this evening?

4:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! What a goal by James!

4:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! WOW ! MAGIC FROM JAMES RODRIGUEZ AS HE SCORES A WONDER GOAL WITH A LONG RANGE VOLLEY OFF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BAR . CHESTED IT DOWN THEN A SWEET LEFT FOOTED VOLLEY FROM THIRTY YARDS OUT.

4:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Goal of the tournament so far by one of the rising stars in the game. How much is this kid worth now?

4:30 PM

Now in a four way tie for GBB. I don't think anyone picked him.As I Stated earlier, he is having one hell of a tournament.

4:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sanmchez heads out for a Celeste corner.

4:31 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

No one picked him, of course. He wasn't on anyone's radar.

4:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The corner from Cavani is headed out by Jackson Martinez.

4:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree with your LOB stutter. Definitely the goal of the tournament. I'd love to see him playing for United.

4:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dangerous free kick position now for Uruguay, who have come out of their shells.

4:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The free kick from Cavani is curled wide.

4:33 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Decent hit by Cavani there - just over the top.

4:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

They have to or else they will be out of the tournament.

4:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The goal was something of biblical proportions as stated in the King James version.

4:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ted Gutierrez volleys straight at Muslera, trying to emulate King James.

4:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Afters between Forlan and Yepes. This match is threatening to boil over.

4:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Now some argybargy with Forlan. Should be in the book.

4:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great save by Ospina from Rodriguez.

4:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought he should have.

Ta, mate. I'm in the mood.

4:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of added time.

4:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Colombia deservedly lead 1-0 at the half thanks to a wonder goal by King James.

GOAL! James with a brace! He's now top scorer!

2-0 Colombia.

5:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! 2-0 COLOMBIA AS JAMES RODRIGUEZ SCORES HIS SECOND. A CROSS FROM ARMERO WAS HEADED DOWN AND JAMES RODRIGUEZ EASILY FINISHED FROM CLOSE RANGE.

5:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice header back, and we have a new golden boot leader. Let's see how many people picked him.

5:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wenger scouting James Rodriguez. I'm sure the Gooner and Simon would love to see him in the red shirt with white sleeves. I'd love to see him in a United shirt.

5:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good evening Red Devil. Nobody picked him. Are you still vacationing in Italia?

5:10 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let the flopping and simulation begin (or continue, for that matter).

5:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Old man Forlan coming off perhaps for the last time. Stuani on for him.

5:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Christian Stuani on for the ineffective Forlan and Sotton's Gaston Ramirez on for Alvaro Perreira. Two attacking moves.

5:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Alvaro off now - a double move from Uruguay now.

5:11 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am indeed. I watched my Chileans go down with greater dignity than usual tonight, but the result was never in doubt.

5:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think that is the last time Forlan will play for Uruguay

5:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jimenez booked for foul on Ted Gutierrez.

5:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

When Chile plays Brazil, the Brazilian coach's strategy talk sounds like this: "You're taller, faster and stronger. Go win."

5:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

You should be proud of the Chileans. It was a great performance. Also, I agree with the simulation. It's been a problem in both matches today

5:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought Chile outplayed Brazil for part of the match. It sure seemed as if Big Phil lacked ideas.

5:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Rodriguez is on a hat-trick now - and who would bet against him.

5:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

James Rodriguez down and straight back up. He actually stepped on Cavani.

5:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I surely would not unless he gets subbed for precautionary measures

5:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Horrible foul on Cuadrado . Should have been a booking.

5:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It will be good riddance to the thuggish Uruguayans.

5:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I feel like the refs today have been quite good. There has been a ton of flopping, and these guys have not been buying much of it.

5:20 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zuniga wins a corner off of Martin Cacares,

5:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The corner from James Rodriguez is headed away.

5:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree, Red Devil. Webbie and the Dutch ref have done well under difficult circumstances.

5:22 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know that Mondragon is on the bench for Colombia, but is Higuita the third keeper?

5:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great save by Ospina from Christian Rodriguez. Useless cross from Cavani.

5:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Mondragon would be third choice. He only cam on late against Japan , so he could be the oldest player to play in a World Cup tournament.

5:24 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Abel Hernandez on for Alvaro Gonzalez. The final roll of the dice for Oscar Tabares.

5:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Uruguay have to roll the dice now - less than half an hour to get the two goals back.

5:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jackson Martinez fouls Christian Roidriguez about thirty yards from goal.

5:25 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Alex Mejia on for Ted Gutierrez.

5:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Christian Rodriguez has a shot blocked by Yepes for a corner that is headed over by Cavani.

5:26 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think this one is done and dusted.

5:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's what they miss with Suarez not being there. Great ball in from Cavani but no one with bite is on the end of it.

5:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BOOM BOOM !

5:30 PM

Is it just me, or does Muslera seem remarkably insecure for a keeper who's held the top spot on his national team for years?

5:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I am feeling a bit peckish. I would like to sink my teeth into a nice meal!

5:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He might be , but that's probably the best they have .

5:31 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ospina tips away a cross from Stuani. Not taking any chances. The corner from Gastom Ramirez is headed well wide.

5:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

what a whiff by Yepes. Looked like me these days.

5:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's been a toothless performance from the Uruguayans despite the biting tackles.

5:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Evening, Red Devil! Sorry I didn't see you come on earlier. Your Chileans went out with a good deal of grace. Just a paint job on the crossbar away from destroying Brazilian dreams.

Diego Lugano , on the subs bench, booked for kicking the ball away and misses the next match. A COPA America match?

5:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Extraordinarily lenient from the Dutch referee there. Ramirez certainly looked to kick out there.

5:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Will Lugano ever play another international match?

5:37 PM

Chile gave them a good scare, but the better team went through.

5:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

what a block by Ospina from Maxi Perreira. Finally , some skill from the Uruguayans.

5:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

a bit of luck for Pereira, but the keeper is paying attention

5:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Did you think? I was distinctly unimpressed by Brazil today. They looked incredibly nervous where Colombia are just playing for fun.

5:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought Chile were unlucky. I am not sure about Lugano. I wouldn't play him. It;s time for Uruguay to rebuild.

5:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Freddy Gurain on for the excellent Cuadrado.

5:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

For some reason Muslera has been off color in this tournament. I've been more impressed by him in earlier tournaments.

5:39 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The good news about Colombia's victory is that the Colombian government has promised to release 20 million tons of cocaine throughout the world, so it will be a heck of a party tonight.

5:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Agreed. Uruguay are an aging outfit, overly reliant on a headcase of a striker. Rebuilding to start tomorrow.

5:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It sure will.It should last for several days.,

5:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bizarre news out of Bogota, that.

5:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Godin wins a free kick.

5:41 PM

Atrocious free kick from Gaston Ramirez. A really toothless performance from the Uruguayans today.

5:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree Brazil did not play well, but they usually struggle to impress versus Chile, probably because they don't take them seriously.

However, there is a distinct lack of creativity in the squad. Their only strategy seems to be: get the ball to Neymar (sounds a bit like Argentina).

5:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Ospina does well to turn a shot from Cavani around the post.

5:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cavani keeps on plugging. Near post shot there smothered by Ospina.

5:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Adrian Ramos on for James Rodriguez , who gets a deserved ovation.

5:43 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The goalscorer James Rodriguez coming off now - he's done enough. They'll need him at his best on Friday against Brazil.

5:43 PM

With that heading prowess, Godin should be the next Atletico player that Chelsea poaches.

5:43 PM

They sure will . I would love to see him running at Sideshow,Dani Alves, and Marcello.

5:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Down to the waning moments now.

5:45 PM

One of the nice things about Holland or the Germans is that there are genuinely multiple players who fell empowered to try to score. With Brazil (Neymar), Argentina (Messi) or Uruguay (Suarez), and even Chile to a degree (Sanchez) it often seems like they are too reliant on a single offensive player. I can understand that if you're Australia and have Cahill, but these other teams have plenty of talent.

5:49 PM

Pretty good start to the knockouts. I'm psyched. Let's hope tomorrow keeps up the excitement.

5:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Brazil are only so reliant on Neymar by Big Phil's design as he decided to bring the likes of Leandro Damiao, Pato, Coutinho, and the two guys at CSKA Moscow. No one has ever rated either Fred or Jo.

I am surprised that Oscar has been as ineffective as he's been so far. I like him a lot.

5:52 PM

I hope so, too. I agree with you about the Dutch and Germans. Two great teams with lots of attacking options.
