The Long Road to Euro 2016 Begins!
The qualifiers for Euro 2016 start this afternoon, chaps, and I couldn't be more excited. Only hosts France are assured a place as of today. England kick off their campaign against the potentially dangerous Switzerland (and without the services of Daniel Sturridge). However, today, we've got Germany v. Scotland, which starts at 2:45pm EST. Join me to follow all the matches this afternoon.

Hey Bob
Not sure how much I am going to see today
I see that the Germany Scotland match is on FS1
I just watched Northern Ireland on FS2.. for some reason I have it now! NI fell behind in the 75th minute but scored in the 80th and 85th minutes to win in Hungry!!!
The Rep Of Ireland took the lead against Georgia but were pegged back but they also score a VERY late winner
Good day to be Irish
Afternoon, UWS - great to hear from you.
Yes - a very good win for Norn away to Hungary. I don't know how good the Magyars are these days, but any away win for them is a great result.
Also a good away win for the Republic in Georgia today 1-2. Good start for the British sides - come on, you Scots!
There's a big ruck going on between Michel Platini and Franck Ribery, who announced his international retirement after missing out on Brasil 2014 through a back injury. Ribery has been called up to play regardless and Platini has threatened the player with a suspension and fine, claiming that he's forced to play if called up. What a nonsense!
Here's how the sides will line up this evening in Germany:
Germany - Neuer, Rudy, Howeides, Boateng, Durm, Kroos, Kramer, Goetze, Reus, Schurrle, Muller.
Subs - Zieler, Grosskreutz, Ginter, Podolski, Sam, Rudiger, Gomez.
Scotland - Marshall, Hutton, martin, Whittaker, Hanley, Mulgrew, Morrison, Fletcher, Bannan, Anya, Naismith.
Subs - McGregor, Greer, Maloney, Fletcher, Bryson, McDonald, Burke
My personal opinion is that no one should retire from international football. They should always be available to play for their country and should not be offended if they are eventually not picked
Denmark have started their campaign with a win against Armenia.
That's a fair point, mate. How are you these days?
Very very busy
Watching two boys playing college ball, still asst. coaching at high school, teaching darlings in Schenectady and teaching a new course at SCCC!
Yourself?
Fantastic - sounds like you're a busy but happy chappy.
You'll be getting a "Save the Date" from me soon enough as I proposed to Kate on Labor Day weekend - and she said, "YES!"
Did you really????
FANTASTIC!!!
WHY DID YOU NOT TELL ME BEFORE?????
Many congratulations to both of you
Fox still can't get it right. The teams are coming out of the tunnel but instead of sampling that atmosphere we're hearing more blather from Rob Stone. Why can't they learn from NBC?!
Cheers, mate!
I posted it on FB, of course.
Couldn't agree with you more
As for BookFace.. I don't do it!
There are more ways to send out news you numpty
Manuel Neuer showing up Fletch with his bilingual skills while Darren has no Deutsche.
Good reminder - I should send out a message to the LOB community. Will do.
players, coaches and fans singing then national anthem with power
Just a bloody week late!
Uh oh - Manuel has dropped the pennant. Not an auspicious start.
Well, I have been busy. Just spent four hours burying the cat....
And we're away....
Schurrley jinks inside and launches the first real shot in anger. Well over the bar, though.
Schurrley jinks inside and launches the first real shot in anger. Well over the bar, though.
Bloody hell - free header for Muller only eight yards out. Missed it well wide. What a sitter!
It wasn't dead.. the cat?
It kept on wriggling and squirming....
Why didn't you hit it with the book?
My neighbor flushed his down the loo!
No surprises - Gilbraltar have conceded a quick goal to Poland in their home opener.
Scotland should have shot way earlier!!
Oh - decent chance there but unfortunately the it fell to Barry "Bloody" Bannan. Corner.
Oh - decent chance there but unfortunately the it fell to Barry "Bloody" Bannan. Corner.
STruth.. another chance... just offside but off the post
Oh - now it's Charlie Mulgrew! But he's ruled offside. A few scares there for the World Champs.
Oh - Durm with a rocket there that Marshall palmed away.
GOAL! Muller gets it right this time. Germany are off and running in their Euro 16 campaign.
1-0!
How on earth was Rudy given so much room on the right to dink a lovely ball in there. Muller beat his two markers to the header.
Romania have taken the lead away in Greece through a penalty by Marica.
Half of the first half gone, then. At this point, Germany were 4-0 up over Brazil. Scots better than Brazil? Alan Hutton worth more than David Luiz?
Germany peppering the Scots goal now. Even right back Rudy is having a go now. David Marshall is having to earn his corn tonight just to keep the score down.
Mad scramble in the Scots box now. Struth!
Stephen Naismith has been completely isolated up front so far. Germany in total command.
Great ball in from Muller but he was really looking for himself in the middle.
Some spectacular sweeping work from Neuer gets Germany going again.
And Reus nearly prodded home Germany's second. Marshall was able to scramble it away.
Scotland are a Championship level side at best.
Where is Ross McCormack!?
Half-time - Germany are cruising this one but it's still a tight score-line. Can the Scots pose some danger in the second half?
The answer to that is an emphatic "yes" as Naismith grazes the post with an early effort in the second half. Crikey!
Wee Gordon has certainly got the Scots all geed up for this second half.
First yellow card issued to Grant Hanley for upending Goetze.
The Poles have extended their lead in Gilbraltar but 0-2 is a decent outing for the new boys.
Now the floodgates have opened - and it's 0-4 Poland in Gibraltar. The rock is starting to crumble.
Two quick goals there. One by Anya to give the Scots some hope and then another by Muller stabbing one home to restore the lead.
Oh - that's a big decision for the referee. Naismith was clean through on goal but pulled back by Durm. Should have been a red but the ref goes with yellow.
Charlie Mulgrew chips one into the wall from the resulting free kick - you can't tell me that was an equal goalscoring opportunity.
Much better from the Scots in the second half and they deserve better. They'll get more chances, no doubt.
Now it's Morrison who picks up a yellow.
Paul Pogba has fired France into the lead in Serbia.
The Poles have added a fifth goal and now it's a proper rout.
Wahey - Portugal's woes continue. They're 0-1 down at home to lowly Albania!
Good afternoon , Bob. I am watching the world champs vs the Jocks. The World Champs lead 2-1 , but the Jocks can take pride out of this performance.
Anya's really sprung to life now - neat little trick there at the by-line.
And now it's McArthur with a half-chance. They're really giving it a go.
Sean Maloney on for Naismith and he ties it up for fellow sub, MacArthur , who scuffs it to Neuer when he should have tied it up.
Romania are surprising one up in Athens.
Poldi on for Schurrle Temple.
Welcome, MUR - great to have you on board. The Scots have been good today, especially in the second half. But will it be a valiant loss or can they pull off a shock Desmond result?
The Finns are not surprisingly beating up on the Faroe Islanders.
I hope Desmond comes to Dortmund. I would have been on earlier, but I was doing yard work with my new mower and edger.
Since the third placed team gets a playoff spot, the Jocks definitely have a chance of being in the expanded European Championships.
I read some of the earlier comments and did watch the earlier. I definitely did not expect Northern Ireland to win in Budapest. They hadn't recorded an away win in four years,
I agree - it's a fairly weakish group. Either the Republic or the Scots should take second place, with the Poles the main rivals.
0-6 in Gibraltar now.
Citeh's Kolarov has equalized for Serbia against France in a notable friendly today.
Dorm wins a corner off of Steven Fletcher.. They take it short.
Poland now six up in Gibraltar . Is it being played at a neutral venue?
Oh - Goetze has a chance from an acute angle but dinks it past the post and Poldi couldn't get onto it.
Charlie Mulgrew booked for a foul on Reus.. Into stoppage time.
I don't think so - I think they're playing on the rock. It's their maiden tournament as a UEFA side.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
What a unique venue. Just when you think you've seen it all.
If I am around tomorrow it will be for brief periods due to my schedule. A tough start for England.
A real shame that the winning goal came from comic defending off a corner.
Time's nearly up for the Jocks now. I got excited for a bit when Anya equalized but the Germans are far too professional to allow a shock to happen.
Charlie Mulgrew has been sent off for a second yellow, just minutes after being booked. For kicking the ball away.,
Oh dear - Charlie Mulgrew has been sent off for two late yellows, the second one was for kicking the ball away in frustration. Ridiculous.
Oh - and now Muller hits the post when he was on a hat-trick!
That's it . The Brave Jocks come up just short in Dortmund, losing 2-1 to the world champs.
Yet another cynical foul from the Germans - this time Muller, who takes a yellow for the team.
And that's it when Scotland might have had a corner and the match ends as a fractious one with Gordon Strachan bending the fourth official's ear.
A bit of an escape there, then, for the Germans who never really had to get out of second gear.
Thirsty Poland score a late as they go seven up and win by that score.
Still a few late ones and a couple of upsets in the making. Romania win 0-1 in Athens.
Albania still one up in Lisbon in stoppage time. That would be the upset of the evening.
The Finns win 1-3 at the Faroes.
A real shocker as Albania win 0-1 in Portugal.
I will record the Swiss vs England tomorrow as my appearances will be sporadic at best. The top matches on Tuesday Will be the Czechs vs the Dutch and Norway vs Italy.
It was great chatting with you. I apologize for my tardiness, but did not realize that you and UWS were chatting.
Cheers mate.
