The First Premier League Matches of 2016
The First Premier League matches of the calendar year will be played today starting with the Hammers vs Liverpool and concluding with Watford vs Citeh. It's also the start of the second half of the season along with the start of the January transfer window. Let's see what's in store.

The main talking points on the pre-match show are the confrontational nature of Klopp on the touchline. and a possible return to Chelsea for Didier Drogba. I haven't observed anything from the fiery Teutonic manager, but apparently plenty of people have , including Premier League officials. Drogba would add some possible firepower to a toothless Chelsea attack, albeit for only six weeks as he has contract with the Montreal Impact
They're off from Upton Park.
Liverpool with the first chance as Jordan Ibe shoots just wide.
Jurgen Klopp has complained that it is windier in England than in Germany, claiming that it has affected team preparation. You must be kidding!
The form book has gone out the window in the Dundee Derby as bottom club , United, with only two wins all season, have taken the lead at nearby Dundee.
GOAL!!!MIKAIL ANTONIO GIVES THE HAMMERS THE LEAD, SCORING THE FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL OF THE CALENDAR YEAR
It started with Antonio and ended with Anotnio as Moreno made a run down the left and was tackled from behind by his own corner flag by Anotnio. Several passes later Antonio was up at the opposite end of the pitch heading in a cross by Valencia from close range
Andy Carroll got on the end of a cross , but headed into the ground and straight to Minnie.
The Hammers could have gone two up . First , Lanzini had a shot with the outside of his foot curl and come off the post, then Antonio headed a cross from Cresswell just wide.
Poo; win their first corner of the match then the hammers counter and Valencia is tackled for a corner.
A naughty challenge by Lucas on MArk Noble and only a verbal warning
Actually, it was a booking , which is the right decision, IMHO.
Thomkins clears for a corner after James Collins misjudged a long ball and Beneteke had a poor first touch
It's now 1-1 in the Crocodile Dundee Derby.
Klopp A tad upset as Andy Carroll appeared to push Clyne. There didn't seem much in it.
Play stops as Adrian is treated for a nose bleed off a stray boot from Firmino after a cross from Moreno deflected off of Andy Carroll. Play resumes as Adrian had gauze in his nose.
Lanzini is down injured . That would be a huge loss for the Hammers
That's it for Lanzini as Pedro Obiang, a Spanish Under 21 international , is on in his place.
Great save by Minnie from Cresswell off a Hammers long throw that results in a corner.
Five minutes of stoppage time due to several injuries.
OH!!! Off the top of the bar from Can and out for a goal kick off a pass from Firmino. That would have been against the run of play
The Hammers are deservedly one up at the half against a flat Liverpool side.
The second half is underway
Klopp sent his players out early. In other words, he gave the the hairdryer treatment.
Normal service has been resumed as Dundee have come from behind to lead 2-1 in the Dundee Derby against rock bottom United , who have only won twice all season
GOAL !!! ANDY CARROLL PUTS THE HAMMERS TWO UP AGAINST HIS FORMER CLUB AND IS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED.
It was a typical Andy Carroll goal as Liverpool coughed up possession , then several passes later a cross by Mark Noble was headed in by Andy Carroll as he out jumped Clyne.A definite mismatch.
Adam Lallana is on for the ineffective Firmino and Brad Smith , the young Aussie, is on for Moreno in a like for like switch. Only his second ever Prem appearance. His other appearance was two years ago
Dimitri Payet, the talismanic Hammer gets a huge ovation as he's on for Enner Valencia in his first action in two months.
OH!!! Nearly 3-0 to the Hammers as Minnie superbly saves a close range header from Andy Carroll off a run from Payet and cross by Cresswell then the rebound by the Coyote was straight to Minnie.
Sorry. It was Antonio with that rebound. He now wins a corner for the Hammers
Antonio blocks a pass from Brad Smith for a Pool corner that is easily caught by Adrian.
A solo run by Coutinho ends with a close range block by Adrian then Beneteke blasts well over from close range off a run and pass by Brad Smith
Liverpool nearly pull one back as a corner from Coutinho was headed on to Lucas , who had a header cleared off the line by Noble then Andy Carroll blocks from the resulting corner and a fight nearly breaks out,. The third corner comes to naught.
HI David
Happy New Year!
I have been around watching the match but not near the computer. I am off for walkies right now but i'll be back for the 3 o'lcockers
I'll be back
Beneteke heads on a pass that is cleared for a corner and Pool players want a penalty . The ref is having none of it.A penalty would have been harsh.
Good morning and Happy New Year UWS. I will look forward to chatting with you.
Dundee win 2-1 in the Dundee Derby. United ended with ten men as Guy Demel, the former Hammer was sent off for a second yellow.
Minnie does well to save from Mark Noble then Andy Carroll is called for a foul on the rebound
Mikail Antonio gets a deserved standing ovation as he's replaced by Private Jenkinson.
Slaven with a wool hat and suit . A classic combination.
Great save by Minnie from the Coyote on the counter off a superb pass from Payet
Joe Allen heads just wide . That should have been a Pool goal as they enter three minutes of stoppage time.
Klopp opting for the hoodie.
The Hammers deservedly defeat Pool 2-0 and do the double over Pool for the first time since the 63-64 season.
I am back just before the 3 o'clockers... a little nippy out there
I made my new year's resolution on thread... I will try to and keep it... it's going to be a struggle!!!
Morning, chaps - thanks for keeping things going on the blog today. Kate and I are heading back up north and hoping that WNY doesn't welcome us back with too much lake effect snow. Wish us luck!
Oh - and MOT!
Got my SS link going strong. The original one I opened had the Arsenal match on. It is ahead of my SS link
It's refreshing to see Klopp not making excuses during an interview. More of that would be pleasing
Take care Bob... have a safe trip
We'll keep you posted
United are off.. not having won since November 24th
It's the Gunners vs the Toon on NBCSN and United vs the Swans on Born in the USA.
United almost in there but Herrera didn't get a shot off
They already kicked off from OT and now from the EM 40 seconds later.
Have safe trip Kate and Bob. As UWS stated , there will be updates.
I'm a glutton for punishment and am watching USA
Herrera took one too many touches
what do you think of the banner with a picture of LVG that read "No More Bore Draws Please?"
I'm watching both at the same time.
I noticed that Alan Curtis looks a lot like Tony Curtis. I know they're not related.
Didn't see that banner... I hope United read it
No comment
Ball in the box... no United player inside the six... please attack the goal
I hope King Louis reads it. He is definitely not an auditory learner.
The least goals this season at any stadium in the country... Old Trafford
That last possession was well martialed by the Swans defense off a solo run by the karate kid.
Sadly, I'm not surprised.
LVG doesn't like Darmian.. anytime he has a chance to replace him he does
Jones in for him today
No comment
Sparky, my dog has made a bold prediction.
And what is that?
Stoke looking dangerous at the Hawthorns
In the words of Alexi Sayle" Oo oo where's me Volvo?" . Sadly United's is stalled or in reverse.
Top two battle in the Champioinship
Boro hosting Derby
Boro on top but still scoreless
I would love that to show Pulis how much moire exciting a team plays after he has left it. Also, Sparky's pick for United's next manager is managing the exciting team in that match
Leicester go close against Bournemouth
The Pig Stick is down after a challenge was uncorked on to his knee.
Leicester City have had a bid accepted by Birmingham for winger Demarai Gray
December was United's worst month for points in their entire history.
Wish United would buy someone in EARLY January!
Cambridge fall behind at home to Wimbledon
Coventry take the lead at Crewe
Neil Taylor tackles Yashley for a corner.
The corner from Blind is headed away at the near post.
I have heard of Damari Gray. He's rumored to be an exciting young talent. That adds depth for the Foxes and may turn out to be a great signing.
Bob will be pleased to hear that Barnsley have taken the lead vs the Evil Lions.
15 minutes in at Old Trafford
Scoreless...no comment
LVG has made lots of signings. It won't matter because his tactics hamper anything United try to do.
Goal at Fratton Park... for the hosts
No comment
Pompey take the lead vs Crawley. You should be pleased.
I just don't understand teams waiting til Jan 31st to save a bit of dosh when they have a lot of games in January AND players could get cup-tied
Not liking this year's timing for matches
Boxing Day was a Saturday so no special program of games
No games on NYD as per normal
Wonder what will happen next year
Christmas is on a Sunday next year so will they have games on Xmas Eve and then Boxing Day?
United with a chance... Roon hits the outside of the net
OH!!! Into the side netting by Roon from a narrow angle.
I remember the last time Christmas was on a Sunday. There were no matches during the weekend. Matches on Monday during Boxing Day then two days later, and there were matches the Tuesday and Wednesday before Christmas. Then there were matches on New Years Eve when United lost at home to Blackburn on SAF's 70th bday. I expect a similar schedule next holiday season.
Interesting
Scunny take the lead vs in form Wigan
Doesn't seem right that it is not the FA Cup 3rd Round on the first Saturday of January
25 minute is... no comment
SAF busy on his phone
Still no goals in the top two divisions
Not sure why United fans are chanting for Jose Mourinho. He's a recipe for disaster as well as a nut case. Also mentored by LVG.
Vardy hits the inside of the post
Cambridge equalize
Is he on the phone shopping for players or a new manager?
Vardy wants a second bite of the cherry
NOT ME SAYING IT

"The Swansea goalkeeper’s not made a save, has he? Dull, dull, dull. It’s as though Manchester United are told not to make a mistake, so their players get so far and decide: ‘I’m letting someone else have it.’”
Not the greatest game so far, granted. But we live in hope for some goals. At some point. Maybe. Fingers crossed.
Coventry two up
I think the Third Round is played between the 3rd and 9th of January. We missed by one day
No striker wearing Red attacking the ball in the box
I may not be around next Saturday because my number sense students have a meet. I'm still undecided.
THERE'S FINALLY A GOAL in 2016
For Sunderland at home to Villa
Fred's team take the lead vs Villa in the Loser's Bowl.
I thought it was always the first Saturday in January
Coventry three up at Crewe
POMPEY two up
Wednesday score at Bob's place on Saturday
Leeds fall behind at home
Neil Taylor tackles Mata off a quick free kick then shoots the rebound straight at Flappy. Technically a shot on target
I just don't understand a certain board in the Northwest of England allowing things to continue to happen
No comment
I'm texting Bob updates
duh... its going to you too
Bob needs a better security system to keep out trespassers.
Roon with a header chance.... no comment
I texted him a few too.
Andy Carroll would have buried that
I would had buried that
The Header from Roon came off a cross from Yashley and was blocked.
Rotherham take the lead at Deepdale
I agree with both statements.
Bob will be happy with that one at Ridsdale's place.
It's 1-1 between the Evil Blades and Posh. The Evil Blades are our opponents in the Cup.
Right now, United are in 7th on 31 points
If... if... they win they could be up to fifth but still could be 5 points out of the top four
Bob's Argyle take the lead at Carlisle in the longest journey ion the Football League
A little less of a journey
Carlisles' ground is unplayable because of the floods so that game is being played at Ewood Park
No red shirt on the end of the cross inside the six
Mata with a chance... saved
Not a great chance
The strikers not sprinting to get in front of the defender as the cross comes in...they are flat footed
Flappy makes a comfortable save from Mata off a run and pass from Yashley
Not me
Man Utd 0-0 Swansea
#bbcfootball Shocking from United, no pace or desire from the players. Something has to change. #VANGAALOUT
Yanis Gbl

#bbcfootball Shocking from United, no pace or desire from the players. Something has to change. #VANGAALOUT
Will I be able to keep my NY resolution!!!
I'm predicting a bore draw.
no comment
I will give you a guillotine so you can use non verbal cues. Those are permitted.
A minute of stoppage time.
one added minute at OT
The Gooner isn't any happier than we are.
This is the type of match the ref could have blown right at the 45 min mark
Roon with a glancing header
Saved
Coventry four nil up
HT at OT
Roon heads a cross from Yashley straight to F;appy. It's 0-0 at the half. Off to the EM
YIKES!
The Gunners are being surprisingly held 0-0 at the half by the Toon.
Only one goal in the Prem and only three in the Championship.
Make it four. Forest take the lead at struggling Charlton.
Only one goal in the Prem and that was a flukey deflection
Bloody Useless all around
Second halves just about to get underway.... will there be any goals!!!!!!
Sir Bobby in the stands with a stylish hat on
Carling Cup first leg semis this week
I have a faculty meeting on Tuesday so I will miss the Stoke Pool one
The second half is underway from the EM then several seconds later from OT
Roon has a shot blocked by Ashley williams for a corner that leads to another.
United win an early corner... beats the first man... gets another one
Sorry to hear about that. Fortunately , we never have faculty meetings.
Looks like an interesting show on the Boys of 66 on MNF
GOAL!!!
MARTIAL WITH THE GOAL!!!!
GOAL !!! united karate chop their way into the lead.
Finally a decent cross and someone on the end of it
Didn't cheer!
Arsenal carved open but the Toon fail to score
Yashley, who has probably been United's best player this match played several one twos with the Pig Stick , then his cross was glanced in by Kung Fu Panda.
"arsenal all over the place" says Le tis
Posh now lead 1-2 at Bramall Lane . Bob will be pleased.
East STIRLING beating STIRLING ALBION
Wonder if that is a derby?
One of them should buy Raheem
Arsenal will still win
Yashley wins a United corner.
Ashley is trying to attack
Taking on players and getting crosses in
Good run there
Corner to United... punched clear
Stupid foul by Shweiny
BOOM BOOM!
I believe it is. East Stirling is from Falkirk, which I think is near stirling.
16:09
Nobody is particularly happy at the Stadium of Light. The weather is shocking and the game is even worse. Villa look hopeless, Sunderland restless.
at full time I am going to send an audio of the full time results in the League to Bob
Yashley has been our best player this match
Excellent idea.
When did Darmian come on? Missed it
Who went off?
Chesterfield smoke their way to a 3-0 lead in the Taming of the Shrews.
I'll do my best classified results reading
I missed it too.
Just read that Jones went off injured
I'd love to hear you read them.
An attacking move by LVG. That's a collector's item.
Celtic being held 0-0 by Partick Thistle in a local derby. It's not just us.
Roon tries to turn but gets a weak shot off
Penalty at the King Power... to the hosts and a red card for Simon Francis
Bournemouth aren't happy
Rangers one up at Dumbarton as are Hibs vs Raith.
Mahrez to take...saved!
MK Dons still most likely to score
Goal at the Hawthorns
West Brom 1 Stoke 0
The Baggies take the lead vs Pulis Old Mates.
Cardiff take the lead against Blackburn
Sess with the goal that was assisted by Jim Morrison as Pulis will close the doors.
Brum 1 Brent 0
Not very impressive by a certain captain in red!
An Attacking move as Barrow is on for Leon Britton.
Leeds millimeters away from equalizer... hits the woodwork
Swansea go close... Ayewe hits the post... then a dive and a yellow
OH!!! A header from Andre Ayew is off the post then Angel Rangel is booked for diving
goals are still hard to come by all over the place
Bolton 0 Hudders 1
Villa tie it up
Neither team want a draw
Wimbledon retake the lead at the Abbey
