England's Russia 2018 World Cup Wraps Up!

England's magnificent Russia 2018 World Cup dream wraps up this afternoon with the 3rd/4th match-up. I know that we haven't blogged the England games up until this point, but maybe we might want to chip in on this one. I'm a complete numpty in that I thought this one started at 2pm!!!!

I'm very relaxed about this one today, obviously. I didn't even know when it was kicking off!

I don't really care about the result. I just want a good match, lots of good goals and no penalty kicks, please.

STRUTH...one nil Belgium!

Where was Broadway Danny Rose?

Danny Rose wasn't tracking back there and Meunier beat him to the punch.

0-1 Belgium.

Blogger United We Stand said...

Rose at fault? Would Young been there?

10:05 AM

Long clearance from Courtois headed on then played wide left to Courtois and his pass was diverted in by Meunier.

I like the loose, open feel of this match.

10:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Prior to the goal, I was going to mention that Roberto put out a full strength lineup, but not Gareth. Not pleased about that. Do you all agree with me?

10:08 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd prefer to have France win; they're the better side, even if they haven't really played up to their potential because of being reined in by Deschamps.

10:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Belgium's previous attempt in this match was 1986, when they lost to France. 3rd place would be their highest ever finish.

10:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I do too, but wish England was dominating.

10:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't want France BUT I don't want a team like Croatia to win either

10:09 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree - I would have preferred to see the same line-up, if everyone was fit. According to John Strong, Jordan Pickford had to argue for his place so that he could be in contention for the Golden Glove award.

10:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I prefer France too, They had the tournament mentality that you usually see from Germany and Italy

10:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

England have never been 3rd. We lost to Italy in the 1990 3rd/4th place match.

10:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

what happens in the PPP if the Chunk scores a hat-trick? Should be wide open

10:11 AM

I'd like to see United get MaGuire...apparently they're going to put in a bid

10:11 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd love to see Sterling get a goal today; we need to get him in scoring form for the next campaign.

Oh - good save by Pickford!

10:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH!!! Pickford superbly saves a deflected effort from Hazard on a counter.

10:12 AM

Belgium break quickly....England survive....just

Terrible defending!!

WAKE UP

10:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Belgium look dangerous every time they break.

10:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. Maguire reminnds me of Gary Pallister.

10:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hazard almost goes thru...doesn't fall down either...well done Edin

10:13 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the only real downshift (though it seems important given the first goal) was not to have Walker.

I would guess that not including Henderson reflects the fact that he is spent after 120 minutes of playing as the only real holding mid.

I think Delph instead of Lingard is probably tactical. Belgium is an attacking team, and part of England's loss of control in the midfield in the semis was down to Lingard viewing his role as too offensive.

10:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Part of the problem is that Gareth made so many changes and Belgium did not. Therefore, Belgian players have a better understanding

10:14 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I so hope England can grow from this tournament and not have it be a flash in a pan

10:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Fab Delph finds some space and decides to try a pop. First shot on goal for England. Saved easily by Courtois.

10:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Cheeky has a header on goal now - meter from England.

10:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Tongue N Cheek heads straight to Courtois.

10:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Weak effort by a LUFC man...typical

10:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

If Delph had scored here, would he have been the first LUFC Academy man to have scored in a World Cup? I wonder.

10:16 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Terrible touch by Lukaku...get it out of your system now!!

10:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Chunk bursts through but his touch betrays him and Pickford collects.

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Delph for Lindy is a downgrade, IMHO . Dier will probably be the holding midfield player, which he is capable of doing really well.

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Superb through ball from KDB to the Chunk, who miss controlled,. Bob will be pleased.

10:18 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice run by L-C... cross isn't there... of course

10:19 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Probably so, Bob. The Leeds players who did score at previous World Cups probably did not start out at the Academy

10:19 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Is Raheem Sterling the Leroy Sane of England? Loew's complaint about Sane was that he didn't play the same way for his country that he did for Citeh.

10:19 AM

10:26 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Still, I like that we've gotten some chances. Better from England.

10:26 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I reckon that both Chadli and Butland will be sold to Prem clubs by then. Wolves seem to be spending a lot of cash these days.

10:27 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Meola and Cobi have been decent, but Lexi and Rob Stone have almost single handedly ruined it for FOX. Lexi would be better off playing the lead role in a Chucky movie

10:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WOW!!! Not nice from Bob about an LUFC academy player. Delph has not been nearly as Fab as Lindy has been.

10:29 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

While i agree that Lingard is better than Delph, a lot of Monday-morning quarterbacks were saying that Delph would have been a more sober choice versus teams that can hold on to the ball, so this may be a tactical move.

That said, after initially getting run over, England is crowding and controlling the midfield.

10:29 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

England back to chasing shadows now. Don't like it.

10:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That would be interesting if Chadli moved down the road to the Baggies local rivals. Steve Bull made that move in the 80s.

10:30 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, and Loftus-Cheek for Alli is also probably a reflection of the latter's injury.

10:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I disagree with the Monday morning quarterbacks. Hard to make it to the semis then change your system. Delph doesn't produce his Citeh form when playing for England. Correct lineup vs Croatia. The players didn't perform at the level they had in previous matches.

10:32 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

'm okay with Tongue in Cheek being sandwiched in for Delle Alli, which is not exactly the knockout punch, but England doesn't really lose too much with that switch

Blogger United We Stand said...

Is Bob champ if Kane wins the GB?

10:35 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We may be undervaluing the French. They did not give up as many opportunities in the first half as England did in that first 20 minutes.

That said, where I do think this lineup shows something of a lack of conviction is less in the quality of the players, but simply that such a large-scale switching out of players creates big continuity problems.

I think that is why England was flailing so bad in the early going. Now, they are getting a better rhythm (last break aside).

10:36 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The plusses for England in this campaign have been Pickford, Trippier, Magiure, Stones, Lingard, and Kane.

The minuses have been Sterling, Dele Alli, Vardy.

Question marks on Hendo, Loftus-Cheek, many others.

10:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chadli down with cramp.

10:36 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Bob wins if Kane is GBB. Is that correct?

10:37 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's probably impossible to judge these two teams based on this match because it's almost like a friendly. These teams are much looser and more relaxed. The rhythm is completely different from a match that means something.

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. I have the same assessment except I would put Vary as a question mark just because he wasn't on the pitch long enough to be evaluated accurately.

10:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Trippier heads out fora corner as Danny Rose was out of position on the counter.

10:39 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Vermaelen on for the injured Chadli. Is that a defensive switch

10:40 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

MUR, you may be overvaluing the English performances against some weak opposition.

Kane and Lukaku had 9 of their ten goals against Panama and Tunisia. Then only one pk after that.

While I feel that England's most impressive match was against Sweden, that was still only Sweden.

10:40 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I don't know, mate. None of the three players who picked France for the Final thought they would win it. But some of the other things might put Bee's Knees or Red Dragon over me.

10:40 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Awful touch by Sterling

10:40 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chadli was actually brought into the squad vs France as an outside defender, so maybe not.

10:41 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree with RD and when I stated that France has the tournament mentality that was meant to compliment France. They have improved as the tournament has progressed and I fully expect them to be lifting the trophy tomorrow.

10:41 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think England are probably a bit in between where they have ended up in this tournament and where they were rated going in. FIFA had them rated 23rd going into this tournament. That's looking fairly ludicrous given where they've ended up. Yet, I don't think any of us would really rate England 3rd or 4th in the world. We're probably somewhere in the top ten but not nearly that high.

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chadli is usually an attacking midfield player. Roberto using him in a different role. Is Vermalen being used in that role?

10:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I agree, MUR, but France have not really impressed me with their football, beyond a few brilliant flashes. This French team won't be one that anyone gets nostalgic about. Ironically, my favorite French team (from 1982) never won anything.

10:44 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

One sign of this being a 3rd-place match is how few fouls we have seen.

I remember watching Uruguay v Germany 8 years ago and being surprised to see so many studs-up tackles from the Urus in the 3rd place match. It is usually a friendly affair (I think back to the England-Italy game of 1990 in which the English players were very good sports).

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Where does Roberto go from here? Does he stay with the Belgian side or does he parlay his success to a lucrative club job?

10:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I only mentioned Kane and the Chunk for the purposes of the PPP standings, not any other reason. While I agree with Bob's assessment of England, we cannot take away what they achieved with a really strong squad. They finished ahead if Holland in qualifying, eliminated Italy, and topped a group containing Germany. They were not exactly easy opponents. England should be praised for what they achieved.

10:46 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

BD, that 82 squad won the 84 Euros (and were still pretty much intact in 1986, when they played in my favorite game of all time vs Brazil).

10:47 AM

10:47 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Belgium one up at the half thanks to that early goal from Meunier.

10:48 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So that's half-time in this fairly meaningless spectacle. Belgium 0-1 up, which probably reflects the flow of the match. I'd like to see this one get even looser and more open with more goals in the second half.

10:48 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Italian commentators are saying Belgium dominated. They have clearly had the better chances, but it seems like control of the game has ebbed and flowed.

10:49 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

BD - 84 featured Amaros, Battiston, Bossis, Platini, Giresse, and Tigana fromt he 82 team, though I think they may have already sprinkled in Fernandez and Stopyra, with Bats replacing Ettori.

10:53 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Again...you ignored my texts Bob!!

I thought Belgium controlled the first half, but England had a few chances. Unless England improve , Belgium will be getting the bronze.

10:54 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I saw that yesterday. Who is expected to replace him on short notice?

10:55 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think really on Tresor and Soler were no longer around for the ride (and the latter was only a part-time starter). Forgot to mention Rocheteau.

The 82 squad was a great one, but I think the 86 one was even smoother in its ability to control the midfield. Platini, Fernandez, Giresse, and Tigana may be my all-time favorite national midfield.

10:57 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

MUR - I think it is Napoli's Sarri who will be coming to Chelsea.

10:59 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

MUR - Chadli is indeed an attacking mid, but versus France he was inserted as very wide defender, initially getting a lot of freedom to cross. However, they then started to pick on him a lot with Griezmann drifting out there.

11:01 AM

It was not until 1986 that I saw over 20 matches - on PBS and Spanish channels as well as German public tv later in the summer. MUR - thinking back, I guess I did see about 15 matches back in 1982, but I think often I was not allowed to see all of them. Thank God for Gole', the official FIFA film voiced by Sean Connery, to help fill in the gaps.

My first World cup was 1978 , which was not nearly as fun as 1982. Great memories, RD

Corner opportunity now for England. A different routine with a long ball chipped by Trippier to Kane at the top of the box. Doesn't quite come off.

Great memories of 82... just graduated from high school...watching a lot of the games together
I especially remember England's opening win at the Nocito's, Bra/Ita at Doesedel's and WGer/Fran semi at the Hunter's

Miss hit shot from Kane off the corner then Belgium counter. It concludes with an unusually poor pass from KDB

I remember all those matches well, UWS

After that whiff by Kane, and the earlier choke by Lukaku, I realize that the weird thing about the two leading candidates for the Gold boot is that their countries did not ride their performances (or even goals) through the tourney. Only Oleg Salenko comes to mind as not being the go-to-guy on an at least decent team.

Best spell of possession for England, but their crosses can't find the target

Mine was 1974. We watched the group stage matches at our house in England and then the latter stages down at the beach hotel in Italy. Watched the final with a group of tourists from all over Europe. I can still remember the reaction from the crowd to that early penalty for Cruyff and Holland.

Decent effort by Dier...should have been a little better

It's true - Kane hasn't been good since the Round of 16 match. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't carrying a slight knock or perhaps is just exhausted.

Long range effort saved from Courtois was anything but a Dier.

Oh - Dier should have scored. Lovely little chip but the pace on it allowed Toby to get back. Great save!

Oh yeah, UWS. I saw demolition of France. Bryan Robson was my hero. Could not understand why they could not get past Germany and Spain later on (I had no sense of World Cup soccer then, having only just started to watch Soccer Made in Germany on PBS in 1981).
