Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning Boys and Numpty
COME ON ENGLAND!!!
LOL! Morning, UWS!
We are off... both teams wearing second colors...when their first colors didn't clash in their first meeting!!
These games are usually pretty good.
Morning Bob
Did you see my other text to you?
Why oh why are we playing today!!
Not that nervous but I want to win!!
The teams:
Belgium: Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Chadli; De Bruyne, Lukaku, Hazard
Subs: Mignolet, Casteels, Vermaelen, Boyata, Dendoncker, Fellaini, Dembélé, Carrasco, T. Hazard, Mertens, Januzaj, Batshuayi
England: Pickford; Stones, Jones, Maguire; Trippier, Dier, Delph, Loftus-Cheek, Rose; Sterling, Kane
Subs: Walker, Lingard, Henderson, Vardy, Buland, Welbeck, Cahill, Young, Rashford, Alli, Alexander-Arnold, Pope
Referee: A Faghani (Ira)
UWS, probably has something to do with who was the "home" team.
I'm very relaxed about this one today, obviously. I didn't even know when it was kicking off!
I don't really care about the result. I just want a good match, lots of good goals and no penalty kicks, please.
STRUTH...one nil Belgium!
GOAL !!!! MEUNIER SCORES OFF A PASS FROM CHADLI
And as is tradition in these matches, we've got an early goal. Belgium score!
Where was Broadway Danny Rose?
Danny Rose wasn't tracking back there and Meunier beat him to the punch.
0-1 Belgium.
Rose at fault? Would Young been there?
Long clearance from Courtois headed on then played wide left to Courtois and his pass was diverted in by Meunier.
That's what happens when you play those LUFC academy players, LOL!
Who do you want to the win the World Cup?
9 goals short of the WC record for goals?
Again, one game to go...only ONE nil niller
Could be by the Champs!
I like the loose, open feel of this match.
Prior to the goal, I was going to mention that Roberto put out a full strength lineup, but not Gareth. Not pleased about that. Do you all agree with me?
I'd prefer to have France win; they're the better side, even if they haven't really played up to their potential because of being reined in by Deschamps.
Belgium's previous attempt in this match was 1986, when they lost to France. 3rd place would be their highest ever finish.
I do too, but wish England was dominating.
I don't want France BUT I don't want a team like Croatia to win either
I agree - I would have preferred to see the same line-up, if everyone was fit. According to John Strong, Jordan Pickford had to argue for his place so that he could be in contention for the Golden Glove award.
I prefer France too, They had the tournament mentality that you usually see from Germany and Italy
England have never been 3rd. We lost to Italy in the 1990 3rd/4th place match.
Get a decent cross over from the wide areas!!
what happens in the PPP if the Chunk scores a hat-trick? Should be wide open
I'd like to see United get MaGuire...apparently they're going to put in a bid
I'd love to see Sterling get a goal today; we need to get him in scoring form for the next campaign.
Oh - good save by Pickford!
OH!!! Pickford superbly saves a deflected effort from Hazard on a counter.
Sterling tries a shot... BALL cannot go thru solid objects
Belgium break quickly....England survive....just
Terrible defending!!
WAKE UP
Belgium look dangerous every time they break.
Agreed, Dave. Maguire reminnds me of Gary Pallister.
Hazard almost goes thru...doesn't fall down either...well done Edin
I think the only real downshift (though it seems important given the first goal) was not to have Walker.
I would guess that not including Henderson reflects the fact that he is spent after 120 minutes of playing as the only real holding mid.
I think Delph instead of Lingard is probably tactical. Belgium is an attacking team, and part of England's loss of control in the midfield in the semis was down to Lingard viewing his role as too offensive.
Part of the problem is that Gareth made so many changes and Belgium did not. Therefore, Belgian players have a better understanding
I so hope England can grow from this tournament and not have it be a flash in a pan
Fab Delph finds some space and decides to try a pop. First shot on goal for England. Saved easily by Courtois.
Cheeky has a header on goal now - meter from England.
Tongue N Cheek heads straight to Courtois.
Weak effort by a LUFC man...typical
If Delph had scored here, would he have been the first LUFC Academy man to have scored in a World Cup? I wonder.
Terrible touch by Lukaku...get it out of your system now!!
The Chunk bursts through but his touch betrays him and Pickford collects.
Delph for Lindy is a downgrade, IMHO . Dier will probably be the holding midfield player, which he is capable of doing really well.
Superb through ball from KDB to the Chunk, who miss controlled,. Bob will be pleased.
Wonder how many Leeds United players have scored in the WC tourneys?
Clark
Was Rio on Leeds when he scored?
Terrible by Sterling.... clueless what to do with the ball
Nice stuff from Delph but Sterling bollixes it up...again.
I don't think he'll every score!!
Nice run by L-C... cross isn't there... of course
Probably so, Bob. The Leeds players who did score at previous World Cups probably did not start out at the Academy
Is Raheem Sterling the Leroy Sane of England? Loew's complaint about Sane was that he didn't play the same way for his country that he did for Citeh.
Great solo Cheeky run that comes off of Kompany for a corner.
Decent header by MaGuire... easy save tho
Oh - Maguire got to the corner. But he put his header weakly to Courtois.
Maguire heads straight to Courtois off the corner.
Bob still looking safe in the PPP.
A goal for England would brighten up this match right now.
It would brighten me up
See my Leeds post?
Bob, again, did you see my text?
You stink on your phone
I think Germany would have done so much better if Sane had played. A really dumb decision. I have yet to hear anyone who thought leaving Sane home was the correct decision
Nice ball by MaGuire
I have been impressed with Meola this tourney
Read my article earlier?
KANE WITH A CHANCE.... fluffed
Oh - I thought Kane would score there. Really big chance!
OH!!! Sterling did well to control a long ball then passed to Harry Kane not Abel to score.
Useless effort by...you guessed it... Sterling
Where did you post the article, mate?
Sterling with a long range effort that lands in the concession stand.
Will Chadli be with the Baggies for the Championship opener in a few weeks. Will Jack Butland be around for Stoke's opener at ER? Your thoughts?
Still, I like that we've gotten some chances. Better from England.
I reckon that both Chadli and Butland will be sold to Prem clubs by then. Wolves seem to be spending a lot of cash these days.
Rose is having a 'mare!
Meola and Cobi have been decent, but Lexi and Rob Stone have almost single handedly ruined it for FOX. Lexi would be better off playing the lead role in a Chucky movie
WOW!!! Not nice from Bob about an LUFC academy player. Delph has not been nearly as Fab as Lindy has been.
While i agree that Lingard is better than Delph, a lot of Monday-morning quarterbacks were saying that Delph would have been a more sober choice versus teams that can hold on to the ball, so this may be a tactical move.
That said, after initially getting run over, England is crowding and controlling the midfield.
England back to chasing shadows now. Don't like it.
That would be interesting if Chadli moved down the road to the Baggies local rivals. Steve Bull made that move in the 80s.
Oh yeah, and Loftus-Cheek for Alli is also probably a reflection of the latter's injury.
I disagree with the Monday morning quarterbacks. Hard to make it to the semis then change your system. Delph doesn't produce his Citeh form when playing for England. Correct lineup vs Croatia. The players didn't perform at the level they had in previous matches.
'm okay with Tongue in Cheek being sandwiched in for Delle Alli, which is not exactly the knockout punch, but England doesn't really lose too much with that switch
I texted you the article
Hazard with a shot blocked for a corner off a pass from KDB
England second best.... of course...we will win then!!
Toby over off a miss hit shot from Tielemans off a short corner.
Is Bob champ if Kane wins the GB?
We may be undervaluing the French. They did not give up as many opportunities in the first half as England did in that first 20 minutes.
That said, where I do think this lineup shows something of a lack of conviction is less in the quality of the players, but simply that such a large-scale switching out of players creates big continuity problems.
I think that is why England was flailing so bad in the early going. Now, they are getting a better rhythm (last break aside).
The plusses for England in this campaign have been Pickford, Trippier, Magiure, Stones, Lingard, and Kane.
The minuses have been Sterling, Dele Alli, Vardy.
Question marks on Hendo, Loftus-Cheek, many others.
Chadli down with cramp.
I think Bob wins if Kane is GBB. Is that correct?
It's probably impossible to judge these two teams based on this match because it's almost like a friendly. These teams are much looser and more relaxed. The rhythm is completely different from a match that means something.
Agreed, Bob. I have the same assessment except I would put Vary as a question mark just because he wasn't on the pitch long enough to be evaluated accurately.
Trippier heads out fora corner as Danny Rose was out of position on the counter.
Vermaelen on for the injured Chadli. Is that a defensive switch
MUR, you may be overvaluing the English performances against some weak opposition.
Kane and Lukaku had 9 of their ten goals against Panama and Tunisia. Then only one pk after that.
While I feel that England's most impressive match was against Sweden, that was still only Sweden.
I don't know, mate. None of the three players who picked France for the Final thought they would win it. But some of the other things might put Bee's Knees or Red Dragon over me.
Awful touch by Sterling
Chadli was actually brought into the squad vs France as an outside defender, so maybe not.
I agree with RD and when I stated that France has the tournament mentality that was meant to compliment France. They have improved as the tournament has progressed and I fully expect them to be lifting the trophy tomorrow.
I think England are probably a bit in between where they have ended up in this tournament and where they were rated going in. FIFA had them rated 23rd going into this tournament. That's looking fairly ludicrous given where they've ended up. Yet, I don't think any of us would really rate England 3rd or 4th in the world. We're probably somewhere in the top ten but not nearly that high.
Chadli is usually an attacking midfield player. Roberto using him in a different role. Is Vermalen being used in that role?
I agree, MUR, but France have not really impressed me with their football, beyond a few brilliant flashes. This French team won't be one that anyone gets nostalgic about. Ironically, my favorite French team (from 1982) never won anything.
One sign of this being a 3rd-place match is how few fouls we have seen.
I remember watching Uruguay v Germany 8 years ago and being surprised to see so many studs-up tackles from the Urus in the 3rd place match. It is usually a friendly affair (I think back to the England-Italy game of 1990 in which the English players were very good sports).
Where does Roberto go from here? Does he stay with the Belgian side or does he parlay his success to a lucrative club job?
I only mentioned Kane and the Chunk for the purposes of the PPP standings, not any other reason. While I agree with Bob's assessment of England, we cannot take away what they achieved with a really strong squad. They finished ahead if Holland in qualifying, eliminated Italy, and topped a group containing Germany. They were not exactly easy opponents. England should be praised for what they achieved.
BD, that 82 squad won the 84 Euros (and were still pretty much intact in 1986, when they played in my favorite game of all time vs Brazil).
Which manager was fired yesterday? I missed what John Strong just said.
Good stop by Stones.
They said Roberto signed a two year contract with Belgium for the Euros
Was it really the same team that won in 84? I suppose so.
Belgium one up at the half thanks to that early goal from Meunier.
So that's half-time in this fairly meaningless spectacle. Belgium 0-1 up, which probably reflects the flow of the match. I'd like to see this one get even looser and more open with more goals in the second half.
Italian commentators are saying Belgium dominated. They have clearly had the better chances, but it seems like control of the game has ebbed and flowed.
BD - 84 featured Amaros, Battiston, Bossis, Platini, Giresse, and Tigana fromt he 82 team, though I think they may have already sprinkled in Fernandez and Stopyra, with Bats replacing Ettori.
Again...you ignored my texts Bob!!
Conte out at SB
I thought Belgium controlled the first half, but England had a few chances. Unless England improve , Belgium will be getting the bronze.
I saw that yesterday. Who is expected to replace him on short notice?
I think really on Tresor and Soler were no longer around for the ride (and the latter was only a part-time starter). Forgot to mention Rocheteau.
The 82 squad was a great one, but I think the 86 one was even smoother in its ability to control the midfield. Platini, Fernandez, Giresse, and Tigana may be my all-time favorite national midfield.
MUR - I think it is Napoli's Sarri who will be coming to Chelsea.
MUR - Chadli is indeed an attacking mid, but versus France he was inserted as very wide defender, initially getting a lot of freedom to cross. However, they then started to pick on him a lot with Griezmann drifting out there.
Thanks for confirming that, UWS. I thought it might be a World Cup manager who had been sacked that might impact our game.
Lingard on
Rasford on
Sterling off
Rose off
Useless socks of Rose!!
Teams coming back out now. Sterling has been replaced by Rashford. Good change, to my mind. Sterling has been a real disappointment this month.
Thanks for the updates, RD. I watched the '86 World Cup , but that was during our dark ages . Thanks for the update on the Chelsea manager. Not sure how he would do in the Prem.
Good! Rashford. More of a defensive liability, but more attacking intent and ability.
We are off for the second half
England get us underway in this second half.
Rash for Sterling and Lindy for Rose. Pleased about those changes as the second half is underway
Lingard also on now - Danny Rose has come off. Poor outing for him. This would seem to be his final hurrah for the England side.
Great pic sent by Steve... Bob will ignore it on his phone!!
L-C.... get it over!!!
Get off a shot!!
Good driving run by Cheeky but Kompany does well to block him off.
Watching the coverage on ITV too
Just saw the LC run... Kane wasn't in the box!!
JPDLC says this is the youngest England squad in World Cup history. Despite what we have mentioned credit to Gareth Southgate for making England much better than they were after that horrible Euro.
Nice run by Jones... horrible delivery again!
Decent attacking focus from England in this opening period of the second half.
Then Hazard was ball hog, which prevented Belgium from going two up.
I was too young to watch all but a few selected matches in 82 (I was not an international soccer fan yet, having grown up in Canada up to that point).
It was not until 1986 that I saw over 20 matches - on PBS and Spanish channels as well as German public tv later in the summer. I remember watching the final in Holland on a boating trip and not fully appreciating the historical context for why the Dutch hated Germany so much. The innocence of youth...
First free kick chance for England.
Great cross...deflected out for a corner
Rare free kick to England. Free kick from Trippier cleared out for a corner by Vertonghen , his Spuds teammate
Oh - great delivery by Trippier and Vertonghen was able to get his leg to it to deflect it out for a corner.
Courtois comes to claim and sets Hazard going again.
I don't like that yellow. THere was a Belgian player down. Belgium should have been less greedy about advancing.
Stones picks up the game's first yellow for stopping Hazard's run.
Courtois catces the corner and Stones booked for a foul on Hazard on a counter that resulted from throw from the corner.
Tongue N Cheek leads a speedy counter , but his cross is headed out
Is it just me, or does it seem like very few clubs still kick the ball out or slow down play when an opponent goes down. I think it is an indication of how much simulation is going on these days.
Cheeky had a great run there but should have kept driving into the box. Picked out the wrong ball.
I agree, Red Devil - I didn't see any incidences of that "fair play" move this month. It seems as if teams are fed up with the time wasting.
Lindy tries a shot that Kane almost gets on the end of it!
Oh - Lindy got free in the box but his cross shot was too hot for Kane to be able to touch into the net. Would have just taken a stud.
RD< you would have loved the '82 World Cup. A fantastic tournament. Brazil and France were the two most entertaining teams of that tournament. Germany were just as cynical and but for Austria would have exited the group instead of making the final
Lindy twice tries to defy physics
I agree with RD about teams kicking the ball out of play and simulation.
Tubby Meola is right - Lindy and Rash have changed things for the better for England. They look a different team now. Belgium have been reduced to trying to hit on the break.
Lukaku does not deserve the golden boot.
KDB with a great pass
Lukaku with an awful touch again!
Get it out of your system right now!!
Oh - great ball through by Ginger. Lukaku with another poor touch that allows Pickers to gather.
Bob's PPP lead still safe as the through ball from KDB for The Chunk was just too long and gathered by Pickford.
England play too slow
DAMN POSSESSION!!!
They are dominating that, but it is really meaningless.
Yes...Lukaku is coming off
And then there was Harry, Greaseman and Mbap
Lukaku gets the hook - he's been poor today. Time for him to get his head straight for the new Prem season to come.
Bob will be pleased that Drys Dean Martin's on for the Chunk . RD feels that The Chunk does not deserve the golden boot any more than Dean Martin.
Will the Chunk be marked by Harry Maguire on August 10th in the season opener?
Great tackle by Delph
Fab slide tackle by Delph on Dean Martins for a corner off a run and pass by Hazard
No he won't... he'll be celebrating with him as they both score on opening night of the Premier League
MUR - thinking back, I guess I did see about 15 matches back in 1982, but I think often I was not allowed to see all of them. Thank God for Gole', the official FIFA film voiced by Sean Connery, to help fill in the gaps.
Short corner out for another.Next one cleared.
My first World cup was 1978 , which was not nearly as fun as 1982. Great memories, RD
Meunier clears for an England corner.
Corner opportunity now for England. A different routine with a long ball chipped by Trippier to Kane at the top of the box. Doesn't quite come off.
Great memories of 82... just graduated from high school...watching a lot of the games together
I especially remember England's opening win at the Nocito's, Bra/Ita at Doesedel's and WGer/Fran semi at the Hunter's
Miss hit shot from Kane off the corner then Belgium counter. It concludes with an unusually poor pass from KDB
I remember all those matches well, UWS
After that whiff by Kane, and the earlier choke by Lukaku, I realize that the weird thing about the two leading candidates for the Gold boot is that their countries did not ride their performances (or even goals) through the tourney. Only Oleg Salenko comes to mind as not being the go-to-guy on an at least decent team.
Best spell of possession for England, but their crosses can't find the target
Mine was 1974. We watched the group stage matches at our house in England and then the latter stages down at the beach hotel in Italy. Watched the final with a group of tourists from all over Europe. I can still remember the reaction from the crowd to that early penalty for Cruyff and Holland.
Decent effort by Dier...should have been a little better
It's true - Kane hasn't been good since the Round of 16 match. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't carrying a slight knock or perhaps is just exhausted.
Long range effort saved from Courtois was anything but a Dier.
The 74 Final was on my 10th Birthday... remember it well
Just think...at that time... England had won the Cup 8 years before......that was 2010 these days!!
Dier.... in...chips over the keeper...saved
Oh - Dier should have scored. Lovely little chip but the pace on it allowed Toby to get back. Great save!
And Maguire has a free header from the corner!
MaG gets his head on the ball....not a good effort
A Spur saves from a Spur
OH!!! One Spud clears off the line from another as Dier was through but Toby cleared off the line.Maguire heads wide from the corner.
Oh yeah, UWS. I saw demolition of France. Bryan Robson was my hero. Could not understand why they could not get past Germany and Spain later on (I had no sense of World Cup soccer then, having only just started to watch Soccer Made in Germany on PBS in 1981).
Kompany fouls Rash, who earlier played that nice one two with Dier.
Free kick chance now as England begin to pile the pressure on.
Kompany heads out the free kick for a corner.
Kompany diverts that out for another corner. Rash to take.
Cleared out.
England are creating more!
Dier heads wide from a corner. He's had several chances.
And Witsel gives up another free kick. Belgium giving up too many chances now.
