Euro 2020/1 - Day 6
Morning, chaps! We're on to round two of the group stage matches in Euro 2020/1 this morning. Oddly, we start with a Group B match up - a Baltic Derby between historic rivals Finland and Russia. Tensions should be high this morning as these two sides kick off in St. Petersburg, with Finland just needing a point in order to likely qualify out of this group.
That's followed by the Group A matches, starting with Wales v. Turkey. Wales pulled off a useful 1-1 draw against the Swiss in their first match, so a win for them would qualify them out of this group, while the feckless Turkey who were turned over 3-0 by Italy will be desperate to get their tournament back on track.
Finally, it's the Italians fresh off that great start who meet up with Switzerland. The Swiss would love another draw in this one, which would likely put them in pole position to qualify out of this group. Join me for all the action today, won't you?

Good morning, Bob. Here to join you in the Baltic Dery from the Tampa Bay area
Looks likemRussia made some changes after the last match and they really needed to after that debacle
They're off from St. Pete
Morning, David - great to have your company this morning.
And we're away in St. Pete's - Russia with an early corner.
GOAL! It's that man Pohjanpalo again! Great ball in and a diving header from the Finn!
GOAL !!! FINLAND TAKES AN EARLY LEAD. SAME PLAYER THAT SCORED AGAIONST THE DANES . POHJANPALO
No it's disallowed for offside
VAR check on that one and he's just a hair offside. Shame - that was a super effort.
Cheers Bob. Glad to join you
That will make the Russians more concerned about being caught out on the counter.
WOW! That was close . That was Prem type VAR decision with then disallowed goal. Great header off as great cross. Russians were caught faffing about
Poor Finnish from the Russians . High and wide from close range
I would have given that goal - it was really marginal. I'm sure that Dave would be gnashing his teeth at it.
Glenn Kamara of Rangers down. How was that not a foul. He was stamped on. The Russian player knew what he was doing
I agreee. I think he will be thinking we saw this quite often in the Prem
OH! off the post from the Russians . He looked offside and the offside flag goes up typically late
Oh - Dyzuba finds some space and fires one off the post. He was offside anyway.
Attacking end to end start. Great to watch
If Russia lose will they the be Finnished?
Dzuyba needs to do better. He looked like a L2 player against the Belgians. Sean Dyche may be interested in him
Oh - Pohjanpalo nearly played Teemu Pukki in there - the keeper did well to get off his line to clear.
I think that because of the Best Third Place policy, teams can't be eliminated for two losses.
Oh - Pohjanpalo got through there but the Russian defender got back well to block. Superb defending.
Nice through ball by Danny O'Sahunnessey for Poihjanpolo, whose shot is last ditched blocked for a corner
Poivio heads over from the corner
I was trying to somehow use Finnish as a pun, but you're right. The Russian strikers Finnishing is inept? Does that work?
Mario Fernandes heads over a cross and the out stretched Dzuyba can't make the proper contact as it's well wide
Well done by Mark Clattenburg onmnetioning the Pref's poor use of the VAR, but I don't think he left the Prem on good terms
That's a nice one. I noticed that the BBC and Guardian podcasts that I listen to both used the pun of "sick" with "Schick" (e.g., "Scotland are Schickened After Loss" after the Scottish loss to Czech Republic the other day.
Thought you'd like that.
Mario Fernandes has been down a while for the Russians
Not bad , but I think my razor references are better
It appears that fernandes iOS done and that's a huge loss for the Russians as he's probably their best player and cannot truly be replaced
Barinov booked for the Russdiansd and glad the ref is having none of his nonsense as he looks really frustrated
The danger man Pohjanpalo nearly in there again.
What did you make of the first round of the Predictions Game?
Opposite of the first match for the Russians where they are dominating possession. Same for the Finns in that department
I only had a chance to glance to glance at the predictions , but it's a really tight start. I'm in tenth place , but only seven points out of first. It's ups for grabs
Hey boys,
I am home after some errands. I had to drive up to Saratoga...and your horse it naturally won...it sounds like it is a good match on 5Live
Russians win a corner
Good morning, Dave. It's been a good start to the match. You would not have been pleased with the disallowed Finnish goal. A Prem type VAR decision
LOL. Nice horse reference,
Morning, Dave - were you wearing your apricot scarf?
I looked at the standings in the PPP. YIKES! Dave holding the wooden spoon. I heard it's heavy
Another Russian booking . Ozdoev booked for a trip on a Finnish break
No, but I was wearing a hat stragically dipped below one eye
Well done, Dave!
Oh - great defending there from the fullback. The Russian lad banged his head on the post. He'll need some mending after that.
Nice pass into the box by the Russian left back and nice Finnish defensive challenge at the far post as the shot is blocked for a corner . a player from each side down off that challenge
Play resumes as the Russians take the corner
A waste as a foul is called
This one seems destined to be another 0-0er at half-time. Advantage to the Finns.
Poor form indeed
His name is Golovin, but he has yet to score a goal or have a reason to drink some Coq Au Vin
Poor form indeed
Germany vs France the first match of the tournament ament where there was a first half goal, but not a second half goal. Normal service seems to have bene restored with this match
Did I hear correctly that there will be half a dozen stoppage time minutes? Yikes! Why so many?
What do you think about the Premier League opening matches!!
There was two injury stoppages, but not for half a dozen minutes
FIX THE CLOCK.... MORONIC!!
It's been all Russia the past few minutes without getting a shot off
ONE NIL
Nice finish!
GOIAL !!! YARMECHUK GIVES RUSSIA THE LEAD. NICE CURLING FINNISH IN THE UPPER 90
Arnautovic suspended for one match for his comments after he scored
Rudiger not suspended for apparently biting Pogba
GOAL! Russia take the lead on the stroke of half-time!
Reminds me of a goal that Bamford scored for us against Villa this year.
I couldn't tell if Rudiger went in for a nibble or not.
Wave after wave off attack finally paid off and Yremchuk played a one two with Dzuyba and the finish even better when you see how tightly marked he was
Did you see my comment about Prem?
I couldn't tell either if Pogba was bitten. What did Arnautoivic say?
Where did the six stoppage time minutes come from?
Free header for Dzuyba , but straight to Hredecky
Sorry I did , but a lot has been going on. The main one that caught my attention is Bees vs Gunners. The Gunners opened with the West London playoff winners last season and thrashed them. The same again? Pool vs Leeds looks an interesting Boxing Day fixture
Advantage Russia at half-time then.
ummmmmmm what about Manchester U vs Leeds U to start the season!!!!
Russians one up at the half and according to the trends of this tournament the Russians look likely winners, but there' still half to play. Off to take Sparky walkies
off to walk Shad
Didn't see that. Incredible that we have the Roses Derby on Opening Day
I'm back for the second half now just in time to see Teemu Pukki running in behind the Russian defense - the Russian defender did well.
I am back as Pukki gets a sniff...great challenge
I love that opening to the season. Should be a cracker!
back for the second half having done walks and feedings on a hot morning
Decent chance for Pukki and straight to the keeper
I absolutely loved the opening match at Anfield last season. I still remember the Guardian blogger's comment at the final whistle: "Football is back. Leeds are back. Fun is back!"
I hope we can serve up another seven-goal thriller.
A busy day for Yours Truly as the Toros host Austin this evening
Agreed, Bob. The Guardian was spot on
Is that a cup match, David?
No it's a league match vs Austin's reserve team
Robin Dod, of Minnesota United, has a shot blocked in the box
sounds like a fair number of Finnish fans made the trip across the border to St. Pete
I'm not sure why the crowd is whistling the Finns whenever they're on the ball. Seems unsporting.
Ah - that makes sense. I know that there are cup matches between MLS sides and lower league teams.
Some long Russian name comes ope for Ozdoev. He's not exactly Russian on to the pitch
Russians not exactly;y known for class or sportsmanship
Shot from Golovin NOT a GOL, but well over
Since head to head his the first tie breaker I think the Finns will need a draw vs Belgium to at least finish third . Denmark vs Russia looks to be a really crucial match
Fonalnd will have to emulate Wales to get anything out of this match
Oh - the Russian sub goes just inches wide of a second goal.
Same combo as there goal; , but this timer Dzuyba place a nice through ball for Miramchuk , whose shot is inches wide. nearly 2-0
Oh - great save by the Finnish keeper. I thought that was 2-0 for sure.
back from the bog to see Hfrdecky do well to turn around a shot from Kuzaev off a pass from Dzuyba
Nice combo play between the two Zenit players playing in their home stadium
Ian Soiri on for Ian Raitala
Iam Lappilen on for Pukki
Pukki goes off - wasn't his day.
I have been pulled away from my computer so many times today!!
I'll be here for the middle game and the start of the late one
I have to pick up Kath and then go to a wake
The double change for thew Finns meant why MLS player on and one off. A Minnesota United platter off and a Montreal player on
Cheers, Dave. Wishing you the best. Look forward to chatting with you when the Welsh play
Will this be the sec and match in a row with a first half goal, but not a second after that not happening at all in the tournament?
Sorry to hear that you have to attend a wake today. I hope it wasn't someone too close to you.
Kate's uncle (her dad's brother) Birch was just hospitalized for heart trouble the other night and had a pacemaker put in the other night. He's home again and doing better but quite a scare.
Can the Danes tie up the entire group tomorrow....doubt it
Nasty elbow in the chest by Dzuyba . That looked intentional
Nothing doing from the ref
The Russians are a little over ten minutes away from a win here, which would get their campaign back on track. It would be very bad news for Denmark, as they're likely to lose to Belgium tomorrow.
I think the Danes would do well to get a draw then would need to defeat Russia in the final match. The battle for second and third place in this group will be interesting
If the Finns tie this up then the complexion of this group changes.
You'd have to favor the Russians after this win, as they'd be playing Denmark who might already be almost out of contention.
Double Russian change. Fred Jensen on for Toivio as it's the Finns making the change
Sobolev for Dzuyba, which is like for like
This second half has been disappointing.
Not sure if I would favor the Russians . Not exactly impressed . Better , but not brilliant and I expect better from the Danes after their opening match. They will definitely need a win. Should be interesting.
Agreed, Bob. Nothing to write home about
This is the first day they've made a mistake with the scheduling. They should have put the Welsh on first thing and this should have been the one to watch while having lunch.
Free kick chance for the Finns...head tennis and ball headed over
Head tennis in the Russian box off a Finnish free kick and the Finnish just off as the final header from Arajuuri was inches over clipping the top of the net
I'd love to see a late Finnish goal here.
Even with a Denmark loss...if they beat Russia the could be ahead of them depending on goals...not sure what the tie breaker is...I'll take a look
Agreed with the scheduling. This is not a great way to start the day unless UEFA will use the excuse that this is the opening act
The tiebreaker is headed to head, so it may be a three team min i group decided by goals between the three of them
Head to head is first
Into a quintet of stoppage time minutes. Russia currently second due to head to head
Russian shot well over off one touch passing
If Denmark beats Russia 1-0, Russia beat Finland 1-0 and Finland beat Denmark 1-0....then what!!!
Least goals conceded against the Belgians!!
So, Denmark need to score two goals to beat Russia and they are thru!
Then who?
Played stopped in the final seconds as a Russian player his down
Then I guess it's down to see who is the best third place team. This could be a bit farcical due to the nature of the tiebreaker
Basically yes for the Danes. A draw vs Belgium would help. Unlikely but possible
This match will be AT LEAST TWELVE MINUTES longer than it should be!!!
It is over
Russians win 1-0 and will be in second in the table because of head to head
It's over as the Russians hold on to win 1-0. The battle for second and third place is wide open
Russia hold on for a precious victory that is a reset for them in this tournament. It will make the Matchday 3 clash for second and perhaps third place crucial on Sunday.
I'm off to check in with an independent study student before the noon kickoff.
So, if Russia don't lose to Denmark then Finland will finish at least in third....except if Denmark beat the Belgians
Correct, Dave. Not what we predicted, but true. I guess Russia will be parking the bus in Copenhagen
Wales will be in great shape if they defeat Turkey.A draw mens that the Turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich will become crucial
I'm back from a refreshing shower for the Wales v. Turkey match, which will kick off in 10 minutes. Rob Page has put out an unchanged side from the one that drew against Switzerland at the weekend.
Norwich City...I mean Wales are in the tunnel
The line-ups for the match:
Turkey (4-1-4-1): Cakir; Celik, Ayhan, Soyuncu, Meras; Yokuslu; Under, Karaman, Tufan, Calhanoglu; Yilmaz.
Wales (4-3-2-1): Ward; C. Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, B. Davies; Allen, Morrell; Bale, Ramsey, James; Moore.
Teams out on the pitch in Baku . it's sort of a home match for Turkey based on geography.
Italy host Switzerland in Rome at 8pm (BST) this evening. Should Wales fail to win against Turkey, they’ll be hoping for an Italy win later.
Welcome back , Bob and dave
It looks an unchanged side for the welsh. Is this a must win for the Welsh. If not then pretty close
The Turks vs the Canaries , or is it the Dragons underway from Baku
We are off
Now underway
Ian drake stated that Turkey defeated wales 6-4 in a WC qualifier in 1997. His name is actually Ian
Some Ian's in the Turkish lineup
I just a quiz question wrong about that match
Dean Saunders asked the score of that match that he scored in
Free kick chance for Wales... Jame with a useless cross!!
Early Welsh free kick headed wide by Ben davies . Did he Ben Dover?
I don't know about these Welsh kits.
Ian Soyuncu gives away a cheap free kick off a Welsh goal kick
Turkey with the oldest manager in the tournament . He's 69, but not French
In this instance I understand the change kits
Bob's favorite....long throw in.... cleared then Ramsey with a big chance....saved
Ah - Bale played Ramsey in well and Aaron should have stuck that one away.
OH! Ramsey should have given Wal;es the lead . Nice pass from Bale a near post kick save by Cakir for a corner
Based on the trend in this tournament , scoring first is really crucial
the cross across the box was there for Ramsey
I was just texted something about Skippy and some incident with Coca Cola. Their value of their shares dropped drastically because of it
Bale wins a corner off a pass from Kieffer Moore
Yilmaz had a shot blocked for a corner at the opposite end
Wales have started well
OH! nice cross from Dan James . Ball played wide left and his cross was headed over by Kieffer Moore at the far post
Kieffer would like Moore of those types of crosses
Then the Milan player volleys straight to Danny Moore. Decent attempt from Ian
Agreed, dave . Been happy with the Welsh start, but a draw probably isn't enough if they lose to Italy on Dad's Day
oooh.... how did that stay out!!!
Big shout for a handball there. Ref not interested. Bright start from the Welsh.
Clattenberg moment there - agreeing that it wasn't a deliberate handball.
Could they some how fix his audio stream...it sucks EVERY TIME!
Welcome back, Bob. I think you made a mistake for leading scorer in the PPP. Isn't OG the top scorer, LOL?
Bale and Ramsey combine and Ramsey shoots miles over with just Ian Cakir to beat . Was he offside?
Yup....he moved two coke bottles out of the shot and just had water
Pogba moved a Heineken bottle yesterday
These companies pay millions and the players get paid by these millions.... I don't think they should do that
Just don't drink it!
Okay , who played the second half of the season with Fat Sam's relegated Baggies ,wins a Turkey free kick
Good point. My nephew texted it to me, but it sounds sort of hilarious.
LOL! Haven't had it in years. I rarely have soft drinks any more. Did back in the day though
Every Prem team has players playing in the Euros
Name me the top 3 represented teams from the Prem with how many
Problems with the video from Baku . Don't remember anything like that during the 2019 ELFinal
Header saved off the line by the Welsh...there should always be men on the post
It was going wide anyway
Joe Morrell heads off the line off from a header from Soyuncu off the corner
James swan dives and gets nothing called
I'm guessing the top three are the two Man Clubs and Pool , but wouldn't know the number of players. Some of the teams have two keepers playing in the tournament
BOOM BOOM! A reference to the fact that we signed him from the Swans? He is known for that?
It's actually
Chelsea 17
City 14
United 11
Technical difficulties as seen in small print on the bottom of the screen
That's a lot of Chelsea players nd shows that Chelsea should be challenging for the Prem . probably would have , but for Frankie "Lights Out."
The list of players are from next season's prem
Arsenal 4
Villa 3
Brent 5
BHA 5
Burn 1
Chelsea 17
Palace 1
Ever 3
Leeds 6
Leic 6
Liv 7
City 14
Utd 11
New 4
Nor 4
South 4
Spurs 7
Wat 2
West H 5
Wolves 7
Goals starting to dry up. Last two matches 1-0 and none this match
