Euro 2020/1 - Day 6

Morning, chaps! We're on to round two of the group stage matches in Euro 2020/1 this morning. Oddly, we start with a Group B match up - a Baltic Derby between historic rivals Finland and Russia. Tensions should be high this morning as these two sides kick off in St. Petersburg, with Finland just needing a point in order to likely qualify out of this group.

That's followed by the Group A matches, starting with Wales v. Turkey. Wales pulled off a useful 1-1 draw against the Swiss in their first match, so a win for them would qualify them out of this group, while the feckless Turkey who were turned over 3-0 by Italy will be desperate to get their tournament back on track.

Finally, it's the Italians fresh off that great start who meet up with Switzerland. The Swiss would love another draw in this one, which would likely put them in pole position to qualify out of this group. Join me for all the action today, won't you?

Morning, David - great to have your company this morning.

And we're away in St. Pete's - Russia with an early corner.

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! It's that man Pohjanpalo again! Great ball in and a diving header from the Finn!

9:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! FINLAND TAKES AN EARLY LEAD. SAME PLAYER THAT SCORED AGAIONST THE DANES . POHJANPALO

9:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No it's disallowed for offside

9:04 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

VAR check on that one and he's just a hair offside. Shame - that was a super effort.

9:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers Bob. Glad to join you

9:05 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That will make the Russians more concerned about being caught out on the counter.

9:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

WOW! That was close . That was Prem type VAR decision with then disallowed goal. Great header off as great cross. Russians were caught faffing about

9:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Poor Finnish from the Russians . High and wide from close range

9:10 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I would have given that goal - it was really marginal. I'm sure that Dave would be gnashing his teeth at it.

9:10 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Glenn Kamara of Rangers down. How was that not a foul. He was stamped on. The Russian player knew what he was doing

9:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agreee. I think he will be thinking we saw this quite often in the Prem

9:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! off the post from the Russians . He looked offside and the offside flag goes up typically late

9:13 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Dyzuba finds some space and fires one off the post. He was offside anyway.

9:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Attacking end to end start. Great to watch

9:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If Russia lose will they the be Finnished?

9:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dzuyba needs to do better. He looked like a L2 player against the Belgians. Sean Dyche may be interested in him

9:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Pohjanpalo nearly played Teemu Pukki in there - the keeper did well to get off his line to clear.

9:18 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I think that because of the Best Third Place policy, teams can't be eliminated for two losses.

9:20 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Pohjanpalo got through there but the Russian defender got back well to block. Superb defending.

9:20 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice through ball by Danny O'Sahunnessey for Poihjanpolo, whose shot is last ditched blocked for a corner

9:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Poivio heads over from the corner

9:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I was trying to somehow use Finnish as a pun, but you're right. The Russian strikers Finnishing is inept? Does that work?

9:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Mario Fernandes heads over a cross and the out stretched Dzuyba can't make the proper contact as it's well wide

9:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Well done by Mark Clattenburg onmnetioning the Pref's poor use of the VAR, but I don't think he left the Prem on good terms

9:25 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's a nice one. I noticed that the BBC and Guardian podcasts that I listen to both used the pun of "sick" with "Schick" (e.g., "Scotland are Schickened After Loss" after the Scottish loss to Czech Republic the other day.

Thought you'd like that.

9:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Mario Fernandes has been down a while for the Russians

9:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not bad , but I think my razor references are better

9:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It appears that fernandes iOS done and that's a huge loss for the Russians as he's probably their best player and cannot truly be replaced

9:27 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Barinov booked for the Russdiansd and glad the ref is having none of his nonsense as he looks really frustrated

9:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The danger man Pohjanpalo nearly in there again.

9:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What did you make of the first round of the Predictions Game?

9:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Opposite of the first match for the Russians where they are dominating possession. Same for the Finns in that department

9:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I only had a chance to glance to glance at the predictions , but it's a really tight start. I'm in tenth place , but only seven points out of first. It's ups for grabs

9:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hey boys,
I am home after some errands. I had to drive up to Saratoga...and your horse it naturally won...it sounds like it is a good match on 5Live

Russians win a corner

9:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good morning, Dave. It's been a good start to the match. You would not have been pleased with the disallowed Finnish goal. A Prem type VAR decision

9:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL. Nice horse reference,

9:31 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Morning, Dave - were you wearing your apricot scarf?

9:32 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I looked at the standings in the PPP. YIKES! Dave holding the wooden spoon. I heard it's heavy

9:32 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Another Russian booking . Ozdoev booked for a trip on a Finnish break

9:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

No, but I was wearing a hat stragically dipped below one eye

9:35 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Well done, Dave!

9:36 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - great defending there from the fullback. The Russian lad banged his head on the post. He'll need some mending after that.

9:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice pass into the box by the Russian left back and nice Finnish defensive challenge at the far post as the shot is blocked for a corner . a player from each side down off that challenge

9:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Play resumes as the Russians take the corner

9:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A waste as a foul is called

9:38 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This one seems destined to be another 0-0er at half-time. Advantage to the Finns.

9:43 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Poor form indeed

9:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

His name is Golovin, but he has yet to score a goal or have a reason to drink some Coq Au Vin

9:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

There was two injury stoppages, but not for half a dozen minutes

Arnautovic suspended for one match for his comments after he scored
Rudiger not suspended for apparently biting Pogba

9:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

GOAL! Russia take the lead on the stroke of half-time!

Reminds me of a goal that Bamford scored for us against Villa this year.

9:48 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I couldn't tell if Rudiger went in for a nibble or not.

9:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wave after wave off attack finally paid off and Yremchuk played a one two with Dzuyba and the finish even better when you see how tightly marked he was

9:48 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see my comment about Prem?

9:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I couldn't tell either if Pogba was bitten. What did Arnautoivic say?

9:49 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Where did the six stoppage time minutes come from?

9:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Free header for Dzuyba , but straight to Hredecky

9:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sorry I did , but a lot has been going on. The main one that caught my attention is Bees vs Gunners. The Gunners opened with the West London playoff winners last season and thrashed them. The same again? Pool vs Leeds looks an interesting Boxing Day fixture

9:51 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Advantage Russia at half-time then.

9:51 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

ummmmmmm what about Manchester U vs Leeds U to start the season!!!!

9:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Russians one up at the half and according to the trends of this tournament the Russians look likely winners, but there' still half to play. Off to take Sparky walkies

9:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

off to walk Shad

9:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Didn't see that. Incredible that we have the Roses Derby on Opening Day

9:53 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm back for the second half now just in time to see Teemu Pukki running in behind the Russian defense - the Russian defender did well.

10:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I am back as Pukki gets a sniff...great challenge

10:12 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I love that opening to the season. Should be a cracker!

10:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

back for the second half having done walks and feedings on a hot morning

10:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Decent chance for Pukki and straight to the keeper

10:15 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I absolutely loved the opening match at Anfield last season. I still remember the Guardian blogger's comment at the final whistle: "Football is back. Leeds are back. Fun is back!"

I hope we can serve up another seven-goal thriller.

A busy day for Yours Truly as the Toros host Austin this evening

10:15 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. The Guardian was spot on

10:16 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Is that a cup match, David?

10:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No it's a league match vs Austin's reserve team

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Robin Dod, of Minnesota United, has a shot blocked in the box

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

sounds like a fair number of Finnish fans made the trip across the border to St. Pete

10:19 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm not sure why the crowd is whistling the Finns whenever they're on the ball. Seems unsporting.

10:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ah - that makes sense. I know that there are cup matches between MLS sides and lower league teams.

10:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Some long Russian name comes ope for Ozdoev. He's not exactly Russian on to the pitch

10:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Russians not exactly;y known for class or sportsmanship

10:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shot from Golovin NOT a GOL, but well over

10:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Since head to head his the first tie breaker I think the Finns will need a draw vs Belgium to at least finish third . Denmark vs Russia looks to be a really crucial match

10:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Fonalnd will have to emulate Wales to get anything out of this match

10:27 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - the Russian sub goes just inches wide of a second goal.

10:27 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Same combo as there goal; , but this timer Dzuyba place a nice through ball for Miramchuk , whose shot is inches wide. nearly 2-0

10:28 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - great save by the Finnish keeper. I thought that was 2-0 for sure.

10:34 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

back from the bog to see Hfrdecky do well to turn around a shot from Kuzaev off a pass from Dzuyba

10:34 AM

10:35 AM

I have to pick up Kath and then go to a wake

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The double change for thew Finns meant why MLS player on and one off. A Minnesota United platter off and a Montreal player on

10:37 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers, Dave. Wishing you the best. Look forward to chatting with you when the Welsh play

10:38 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Will this be the sec and match in a row with a first half goal, but not a second after that not happening at all in the tournament?

10:39 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sorry to hear that you have to attend a wake today. I hope it wasn't someone too close to you.

Kate's uncle (her dad's brother) Birch was just hospitalized for heart trouble the other night and had a pacemaker put in the other night. He's home again and doing better but quite a scare.

10:41 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Can the Danes tie up the entire group tomorrow....doubt it

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nasty elbow in the chest by Dzuyba . That looked intentional

10:42 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nothing doing from the ref

10:42 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Russians are a little over ten minutes away from a win here, which would get their campaign back on track. It would be very bad news for Denmark, as they're likely to lose to Belgium tomorrow.

10:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think the Danes would do well to get a draw then would need to defeat Russia in the final match. The battle for second and third place in this group will be interesting

10:43 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If the Finns tie this up then the complexion of this group changes.

10:44 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You'd have to favor the Russians after this win, as they'd be playing Denmark who might already be almost out of contention.

10:45 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Double Russian change. Fred Jensen on for Toivio as it's the Finns making the change

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sobolev for Dzuyba, which is like for like

10:46 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This second half has been disappointing.

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not sure if I would favor the Russians . Not exactly impressed . Better , but not brilliant and I expect better from the Danes after their opening match. They will definitely need a win. Should be interesting.

10:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. Nothing to write home about

10:49 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This is the first day they've made a mistake with the scheduling. They should have put the Welsh on first thing and this should have been the one to watch while having lunch.

10:49 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Free kick chance for the Finns...head tennis and ball headed over

10:50 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Head tennis in the Russian box off a Finnish free kick and the Finnish just off as the final header from Arajuuri was inches over clipping the top of the net

10:51 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'd love to see a late Finnish goal here.

10:51 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Even with a Denmark loss...if they beat Russia the could be ahead of them depending on goals...not sure what the tie breaker is...I'll take a look

10:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed with the scheduling. This is not a great way to start the day unless UEFA will use the excuse that this is the opening act

10:51 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The tiebreaker is headed to head, so it may be a three team min i group decided by goals between the three of them

10:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Head to head is first

10:52 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Into a quintet of stoppage time minutes. Russia currently second due to head to head

10:53 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Russian shot well over off one touch passing

10:54 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

If Denmark beats Russia 1-0, Russia beat Finland 1-0 and Finland beat Denmark 1-0....then what!!!

Least goals conceded against the Belgians!!

10:54 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So, Denmark need to score two goals to beat Russia and they are thru!

10:55 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Then who?

10:55 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Played stopped in the final seconds as a Russian player his down

10:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Then I guess it's down to see who is the best third place team. This could be a bit farcical due to the nature of the tiebreaker

10:57 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Basically yes for the Danes. A draw vs Belgium would help. Unlikely but possible

10:58 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This match will be AT LEAST TWELVE MINUTES longer than it should be!!!

It is over
Russians win 1-0 and will be in second in the table because of head to head

10:59 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over as the Russians hold on to win 1-0. The battle for second and third place is wide open

10:59 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Russia hold on for a precious victory that is a reset for them in this tournament. It will make the Matchday 3 clash for second and perhaps third place crucial on Sunday.

10:59 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm off to check in with an independent study student before the noon kickoff.

11:00 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So, if Russia don't lose to Denmark then Finland will finish at least in third....except if Denmark beat the Belgians

11:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Correct, Dave. Not what we predicted, but true. I guess Russia will be parking the bus in Copenhagen

11:49 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Wales will be in great shape if they defeat Turkey.A draw mens that the Turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich will become crucial

11:51 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm back from a refreshing shower for the Wales v. Turkey match, which will kick off in 10 minutes. Rob Page has put out an unchanged side from the one that drew against Switzerland at the weekend.

11:52 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Norwich City...I mean Wales are in the tunnel

11:53 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The line-ups for the match:

Wales (4-3-2-1): Ward; C. Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, B. Davies; Allen, Morrell; Bale, Ramsey, James; Moore.

11:54 AM

Teams out on the pitch in Baku . it's sort of a home match for Turkey based on geography.

11:57 AM

12:06 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bob's favorite....long throw in.... cleared then Ramsey with a big chance....saved

12:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ah - Bale played Ramsey in well and Aaron should have stuck that one away.

12:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Ramsey should have given Wal;es the lead . Nice pass from Bale a near post kick save by Cakir for a corner

12:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Based on the trend in this tournament , scoring first is really crucial

12:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

12:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! nice cross from Dan James . Ball played wide left and his cross was headed over by Kieffer Moore at the far post

12:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Kieffer would like Moore of those types of crosses

12:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Then the Milan player volleys straight to Danny Moore. Decent attempt from Ian

12:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, dave . Been happy with the Welsh start, but a draw probably isn't enough if they lose to Italy on Dad's Day

12:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

oooh.... how did that stay out!!!

12:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Big shout for a handball there. Ref not interested. Bright start from the Welsh.
