Argentina vs. S&M

The Argentinians were mighty impressive against Ivory Coast the other day, especially the pundits' favorite Juan Riquelme. Will they keep up the form today against the Serb? Will the Serbs avoid an early bath? Find out with me.

right here.

let's see whether riquelme will get another medal for wandering around for 54 minutes and showing up for 6 minutes. if the serbs don't stick someone to stay close to him, they're not trying.

Hey mate! Well, this lot is my pick for the Champions, and they've started well.

GOAL! 1-0 Argies; Maxi Rodriguez latches onto a through ball in the penalty area and finishes clinically. How's that!

You may think me mad, Gooner, given our history with the Argies, but I'm pulling for them today. If they and England were to top their respective groups, we wouldn't see each other until the Final. That's a good thing!

that's fine by me.

did you see heinze rolling about trying to get savo a card for that challenge? it's not good enough that argentina are better and that they're a goal up? what's the matter with them that they are born to cheat like that?

Yeah, I saw that. I hate them but want to avoid them. My preferred schedule would be:

Second Round - England vs. Ecuador
Quarters - England vs. Ivory Coast
Semis - England vs. Brazil (well, we have to play them sometime)
Final - England vs. Argies

The Argies are just toying with the Serbs now. They're in neutral until they step it up a gear, if need be.

GOAL: 2-0; Oh my, the goal of the tournament so far. Awesome team goal finished by Cambiasso. What about that backheel from Crespo?

that cambiasso goal was better than the first. if they didn't cheat as well, you'd have to appreciate them more than brazil at this point.

the argies would do well to wonder why nike isn't knocking down their door as well to do those joga bonito ads. well, it's because for every bit of joga bonito, you have to suffer some jogo tropo bruto that if just infuriatiing.

i'm glad we're not on course to face them mind, but i'd settle for the serbs losing ayala to a tournament ending facial injury-savo's enbow into his nose.

Love how Crespo took a yellow for the "wagging finger" dissent.

GOAL: 3-0. Another great team move ends with a second for Maxi Rodriguez. A bit fortunate - it went in off the post and the defender's foot, but still....

They're all over these mugs. A question - how good are the Argies vs. how bad are the Serbs?

Saviola - what a player!

Half-time: 3-0. This one's all over. With the Poles already out, the Serbs heading that way here and Ukraine having been tonked 4-0 the other day, this is not turning out to be a memorable tournament for the Central/Eastern European countries.

this is an emphatic statement of intent. i hope that there's someone on their side of the tournament that can slow them down a bit or it really is all over.

Well, they would get probably Mexico (or perhaps Portugal in the second round and then probably Sweden in the quarters. Their first really tough match is probably Italy in the semis.

This has gotten embarrassing. Did you see that nutmeg from Riquelme? This is just ridiculous.

Sorry, they could also get Germany in the quarters and Spain in the semis, if Sweden and Italy come acropper to either of those teams.

Oh, baby, here comes Tevez!

Straight red for Kezman who was chasing back and went in two-footed on Cambiasso. A bit harsh, didn't you think?

Savo comes off to boos from the crowd. A bit sad, really. They've been outclassed today. If they had ended up in an easier group, the Serbs might've shown up.

I'm surprised that Pekerman hasn't stuck Aimar on for Riquelme; this one's all over and all Riquelme can do at this point is get himself injured.

Stone-cold pen. for Crespo. The ref waves it on. Again a sumptuous move from the Argies ended with a neat flick from Riquelme.

Oh, Christ, here comes Messi!

GOAL: 4-0; Messi, after having been unceremoniously dumped on the turf by a thuggish Serb, picks himself up, delivers a lovely cross to Crespo who finishes. This is too easy.

Again, this eases the burden on the U.S. who are now third worst team of the tournament on goal difference. We'll see what happens with the Italians tomorrow.

This hasn't really proven a "Group of Death" after all. The Argies are clearly the superior team and I expect the Dutch to get a result against Ivory Coast today, although I'd love to be proven wrong.

Blogger gooner71 said...

yikes!

did you see how easy that was for tevez?

GOAL: 5-0; Ridiculous stuff from Tevez. Beats two or three and then bends it in. That might now be goal of the tournament. Unbelievable stuff.

What's happened here is that, just when the first eleven had started to settle for the 3-0 win, Pekerman stuck on Messi and Tevez, who both have something to prove.

Oh, dear - it's 6-0 Messi - Tevez and Messi again. Frightening!

10:50 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time 6-0 - WOW! I can't see any other side touching them. We've just seen the next champions.

10:52 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

absolutely correct. champions.

that second goal was as good as the brasilian fourth in the 70 final. only difference was alberto's was after the brazilians bamboozeled probably the best defense in our lifetime. you can't say that the serb defense was anything like that sort of quality.

having seen all the contenders now, i just can't point to any country that can both unlock the argies and also contain them.

worthy winners and probable champions and a delight to behold when they're not applying the sly nobbles and rolling around on the ground unnecessarily.

I'm not sure that the Argies are quite as good a side as 70 Brasil, but that result does throw into relief the wide gulf between the Argies and Brasil in this tournament. I reckon Croatia and the Serbs are fairly equivalent - defensive minded, well organized but not much going forward. Brasil really struggled to make any chances while the Argies took the Serbs to the cleaners in outrageous fashion.
