Hello, lads. I concur with Gooner Steve. I'll take a 0-0 and no injuries from this one. I'm happy to see that Sven has come to his senses and is playing a 4-4-2.

The Jamaican contingent sound incredible. Reminds of the crowd at Lords for the West Indies games.

Nice try of an own goal there

Ooh, dear, a nervy start at the back. That header from Terry could have gone anywhere.

the radio just said that Becks looks hurt but just told the bench he is ok

Crouchie's off to a good start again. I'm really starting to like this kid. Looking forward to another "Robot" celebration.

I don't believe how nervous I am everytime an Engurlund player hits the turf

If there's any hint of an injury to Becks, ger' him off!

I was a fan of Crouch when the rest of world was booing him. I think he has great feet for a big guy.
Becks chance

I want to see one of these Becks free kicks in the net. He should at least make the keeper work.

GOAL: 1-0 England. Lampard scoops up a chance after a terrific header from Crouch and flick on from Owen.

Wee Mikey looks a bit sharper today. I don't get the commentators. It's as if they don't want him to do well.

Any idea what color paragauy where?
Will England be in Red or White a week from today?

9:21 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That goal just confirms the benefits of playing a striking partnership - especially the "Little and Large" one - up front. This should be our starting eleven against Paraguay and T&T, don't you think, Davey?

9:21 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Paraguay are in red and white. I assume it'll be home colors for both sides.

Terry?

9:22 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

own goal?

9:22 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! 2-0. We are devastating from those set pieces from Becks. I reckon it's an own goal rather than from Terry. Doesn't matter. They all count.

9:23 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I agree, all these free kicks are deadly

9:23 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The commentator - Jim Proudfoot again? - has made the point that the Jamaicans will be loathe to "crock" an England player. It is noticeable that there are few hard challenges coming in today. Not like the villains from Hungary.

Blogger United We Stand said...

boy that was close to a hand ball

9:26 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I would not like to have to defend against Becks's corners and free kicks. They're nearly all in-swingers, with the likes of Terry, Crouch, Rio and Lampard trying to get a head on it. Reminds me of that game I played against your team with the gale force winds. Nearly every corner went in.

9:27 AM

Great save

9:28 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Great save from Robbo. That's what we need. He's been inactive for twenty minutes and then has to pull that off. Marvelous.

9:29 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Some of the balls in to Crouch act as if he's bloody twelve feet tall. He's big but...

9:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I remember that game.
Liverpool(my team) 5
Mildenhall 2
Half time 3-2 with the wind. Forest bragging that they were going to crush us in the second half!!

PS I SCORED ALL FIVE

9:30 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The radio is saying that Becks is limping

9:31 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Interesting. Marlon King was sent home for an argy bargy about curfews. I've never understood the need for that around a tournament. There was just an article in the NY Times today about how Bruce Arena is allowing U.S. players full access to their families during the competition. That seems right - they're not children.

9:32 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Becks does seem to be hobbling a bit, don't you think? Ger' him off. We'll need the magic right foot for next week.

9:33 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

In "98 they were locked up with no family and came 32nd. Their families were with them in "02.
Big difference.

Blogger gatorbob said...

How could I forget that bloody game! 5-2! well, not as bad as that 25-0 hiding we got from those Welsh lads. Even the goalkeeper scored. I think they were ashamed of themselves after the match, the way they beat up on us. It was men against boys.

This one's quieted down.

Blogger United We Stand said...

great header by Crouch to win a corner

9:35 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

GOAL, own goal or not

9:35 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I say that was a goal by Crouch

9:35 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! 3-0. Scrappy one from Crouch. Still, it gives us another look at the Robot. I love it! I wouldn't count that as an own goal - it was already going in.

9:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I agree

9:36 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Owen was on-side there. Nicely timed run off the center back's shoulder. Those are tough to call because they look so off-side.

9:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We now need a goal from Owen.
I keep bringing up the radio but they have said that Owen looks really off pace. Do you agree?

9:37 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

THERE IT IS

9:37 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL! 4-0. That's the one for Owen that we wanted!

9:38 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Terry off?

9:38 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Nice, Sven's starting to rotate the squad. Sol for Terry. Good move. I'd like to see Becks come off and Aaron Lennon get a run. Maybe at half time?

9:39 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Let's hope that the Paraguayan defenders are as naive as these mugs next week.

9:40 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Wayne Bridge in for Ashley Cole who seems to be having trouble with his side. Not good.

9:41 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ah, no, Terry has a hamstring strain. This is not good.

9:42 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

And nearly a Jamaican goal there. Could have been in.

9:42 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

They look a bit rattled suddenly. News from the bench must have seeped on to the pitch. For a casual stroll, this has become dire, with possible injuries to Cashley, Terry and Becks.

9:44 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, the bench looks rather grim. Not the party atmosphere you would expect, given the scoreline.

9:45 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Okay, Bridge instead of Cashley isn't a great loss. If we had to put in Sol for Terry, that would hurt in my view. But the shape of the team would be the same. We can't lose Becks though. He's the key to the set pieces. Joe Cole's delivery isn't quite the same quality.

9:47 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Suddenly the commentary has switched over to the Beebs with John Motson and Lawro....

And then back to Jim Proudfoot. Weird.

Now Tower of Babel.

9:48 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Well, this was all going swimmingly for a while. This is the kind of score we'll need to run up against T&T for sure, because you know the Swedes will do the same. I reckon the standings will come down to goal difference between the two sides.

But the injuries are worrisome. I'm hoping they'll have good news from the dressing room at the half.

9:50 AM
Blogger gooner71 said...

At the half, 4-0 to England, but the injuries to Cashley, Terry, and possibly Becks make the mood less than celebratory.

Of them, I'd say that Cashley's looks the worst. You say we've got cover in Bridge, but immediately after he was at fault in the best chance the Jamaicans had in the half. The commentator says that Carra will be a candidate too, and that's my pick ahead of Bridge any day.

Terry's hammy depending on the severity is a big problem, no kidding, but Sol's in the shop window and looks fit. He'll have an incentive to play well. And let's not forget, Terry is prone to those half clearances that make Alan Hanson's scar throb. Case in point, that faff after Rio thoughtlessly headed the ball back into the center of the area. Think Rio's been at the Reggae Boys' stash before the game?

But let's be happy about Crouch. Outstanding the way he's taken his chance in the first 11. He's won everything, been useful on the floor. And he's teamed up with Mikey and the 3 forward midfielders so well. You have to love the way Lampard finished his goal with a icey-cool volley. And Mikey got through and around the keeper like it was France '98 again. I'd like to see Joe Cole more active, but am I right that he seems to be laying back and possibly is the holding man with Gerrard? Weird.

If Becks has as much as a toothache, I'd sub him off for the second half. And at 4-0, I might leave Owen on for match fitness purposes, but I'd certainly sub off Gerrard who strikes me more and more as if he just doesn't have an off-switch when it comes to playing safely.

I'd like to see Aron Lennon and possibly Carrick in the second half. Carrick because though I didn't think he was terrible in the Latvia game, everyone else though he was. I'd like his confidence built up a bit with a performance against modest opposition.

Maybe even Theo so he could get his goals for England started.

Shit, this has got to get sorted and soon.

And it will be sorted, Gooner Steve. Based on your recommendation, I tried out Firefox last night and had total success. I'm almost 100% confident that we're set for next weekend and I can't wait. Check out the schedule for next Saturday and see if you're not drooling.

10 a.m. England vs. Paraguay

12 p.m. Sweden vs. T&T

3 p.m. Argentina vs. Ivory Coast

Roll on!

And I'll be reporting on how high Motty's hysteria is running.

I think I'll try first thing to download Firefox on Mom's set for best results.

Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, that would be magic. Firefox does seem to be the key. It even gives you some added bells and whistles on the comment box, which I like. It would great to have you on board for the opening ceremonies and Germany match, especially as Dave will be at school until the 3 p.m. match.
