Holland vs. Portugal

Blimey, I've only just stopped sweating and shaking after that tight England win and now we've got another match coming up. Anyone else out there in any kind of state to watch more footie?

I think I'd prefer Holland as a quarterfinal opponent for England, especially if Van Basten is going to keep playing Dirk Kuyt rather than Van Nistelrooy. Portugal are a bit less predictable an opponent. You know what you're gonna get with the Dutch - just shut down Robben and you're all set.

How about the rest of you?

Blogger gatorbob said...

Van Bommel in the thick of it already, just going close on a shot and picking up a yellow for a hack on Skippy.

3:06 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

here now. listening to the baddiel and skinner one with the song "england girl."

i think that they left ruud out because he's off form so far. didn't see that kuyt is so much better to be honest. if they are looking for the hot boot, i'd think about the kid, ryan babel. liked him a lot against argentina as a sub.

3:13 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A bit casual there from Van der Sar.

Other than that moment of madness, this feels like a quarterfinal match - very cagey. This is what I expect from the matches beyond this stage.

3:17 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Skippy is still laboring with the thigh injury - he may have to come off.

3:18 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

the other possibility is that ruud is a bit shagged from his outing at royal ascot on friday. maybe he has just enough for a light canter in the second half.

i have to say, skippy is making quite a meal out of a thigh bruise. go on pretty boy!!

3:18 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

disappointing that robben doesn't have enough confidence with his right foot to smack that one. i certainly think that he should have.

3:20 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

A flurry of yellow cards there. One decent one for Maniche for a bad foul and one soft one for Robben for "simulation." Would be nice to see Robben unavailable for a match against England.

3:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I agree, Trev. But this is the kind of game where that one moment of brilliance is going to get you through to the next round. We saw that with Van Horsey in 2004 in the game against Germany when he had one half chance and buried it. I just don't see this Kuyt guy as a clinical finisher like Ruud.

3:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

are you sure that robben got a card? not a strong talking to?

3:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

GOAL: 1-0 Portugal. Maniche again. Isn't that his third of the tournament?

3:26 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

jesus, does maniche just hibernate for two years at a time to show up in tournaments? he's just been warehoused at chelsea as far as i can tell.

3:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Not sure about the card for Robben; maybe just a bollocking from the ref.

3:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, he is a tournament player, a bit like Klose. Where's he been since 2002?

3:28 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

i think it was a bollocking for robben.

that's #2 for maniche.

3:28 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

FIFA website says Maniche just had the one going into today. So I suppose that's his second. My memory was that he'd had a couple. Hmm...

3:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Cristiano - what a flash bastard! I wish I were still playing; I've give him a kick for that sort of thing.

3:32 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

this is very shakey stuff from the dutch. they can't get any possession in the midfield and even when they do, they are bombing forward pell-mell as if they only have 6 minutes to go instead of 60.

portugal looking more direct than usual. if holland hold this scoreline, i predict figo, deco, pauleta, etc, walking through the second half.

3:32 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Come on you Orange!

3:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Make that white with blue shorts and diagonal red and black stripe. Very unorthodox for the Dutch. Must be disappointing for all the punters decked out in orange.

3:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

re: maniche, well karen has been gone a few days and you must be having haunted dreams.

3:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now a booking for Costinha - the Portuguese are racking them up.

3:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, just talked to KC on the phone. She says the papers are all "C'est la vie" about the French squeaking through. Very existentialist, Jean-Paul Sartre kind of response to the victory. Typical.

3:36 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Skippy in the wars again. Get him another thigh wrapping. No, Simao's coming on for him. He's had enough kicking for one evening.

3:37 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

oh bloody hell, skippy has given up. no wonder big phil yells at him. that's poor.

3:37 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Ooijer. What a cracking name! JP's pronouncing it "Owyer" and I keep looking for Banjo Boy out there. Still, I bet the Dutch pronunciation is good value for money.

3:39 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

now this is getting ridiculous. he got nailed yes. but he could have played through with no real worry of injury. now he's on the sideline, he asked to come out, and he's blubbing.

big phil's gotta dish out some tough love here for this boy's sake. ridiculous.

3:40 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, if Van Persie had bent that with the inside rather than outside of his foot, it would've gone in.

3:41 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I'd clip Skippy round the ear for that - there's no crying in WC football! Well, except for Gaz.

Okay, that was a bit nasty from Costinha - he could easily have gone off for that. He's obviously on the Graham Poll "Three Yellow Card" program.

3:43 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

costinha lucky to stay on there? i dunno. that looked late, but not dangerous or premeditated.

3:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

The Dutch have completely lost their shape here. Robben is drifting inside where he's no threat at all and Kuyt has drifted wide. What the hell?

3:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

especially there's no crying when you asked to be subbed. he could have played through that challenge. no grit at all.

fecking hell, nuno valente with a challenge straight out of the shaolin school. that's really bad.

3:46 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Come on, the tackles are flying in here. Did you see that one on Robben? The ref's in danger of losing this match. The problem is with international matches that the ref can't always communicate effectively with the players. Harkesy just made that point - well done, John.

3:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Did you ever see that "Shaolin Soccer" bollocks? I never did; don't fancy that "Crouching Tiger" chopsocky nonsense.

3:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Good save Van der Sar. He's kept them in the tournament. I'm not sure there's a way back for the Dutch if they go two down.

Saddle up Ruud!

3:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

the commentators are correct that kuyt is looking unable to perform at this level. kuyt's looking for space when he should be in there after the ball. that's what adu does and he's a wee man compared to kuyt.

good stop by vds.

3:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Finally Costinha's gone off. He should've signed up for the four card program. Ridiculously intentional hand ball. How many of those have we seen in this WC?

3:50 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

predictable second yellow for costinha. he escaped the punishment for that tackle on schneijer but really that's pretty stupid not to leave the rough stuff to someone not on a card today.

come on orange. this one is up for grabs.

3:50 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Big Phil's not looking too happy now. It would be lovely to have Portugal in the quarters with no Skippy and no Costinha. Now if Van Bommel could give Deco another good kicking.

3:51 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Alright, I'll ask this question again:

The Adidas ad with the kids playing with all the stars. What's the lyric in the song: Something like....

"If you don't give me my ball back, I'm going to put the kick on you."

It's driving me crazy.

3:56 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Typical Becks quote: "The missus gave me a text before me match and said, 'you've been terrible Da-vid. Score one for me,' and it brung me good luck." They're made for each other.

3:58 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Portugal can always go to their other hatchet man Petit. Costinha is just younger but Petit has previous as well.

Other than Skippy's craven behavior, I can't see what's getting up Phil's nose here. Portugal have dominated the first half, they're a goal up, unlucky that it's not more and they've kicked seven shades of shite out of the Dutch and only lost Costinha. What more could he ask for.

The Dutch have to sort a lot out. But they are a man up in the heat with 3 subs to the Portuguese 2.

I'd start again with the same side but if Kuyt doesn't look good straight away, he'd be gone.

I'd put Van Bommel on notice too. He's supposed to be supporting the strikers and they've been forced back to get the ball.

I wish Van Persie would get more chances running in from the right. I really think he could just light everything up. He must finish his opportunities better.

4:01 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Where are you, Da-vid. In the pool with the kiddies again, Da-vid. Oi, it's the missus texting you. She says, 'Get on the blog, Da-vid."

4:01 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

sorry, i've been tuning those ads out. i'll pay attention next time.

4:02 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I might yank Kuyt and van Bommel off pretty soon, VB because he's on a card and Kuyt because he's crap.

4:06 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yellow for Petit, who's only been on the pitch for five minutes. Lovely. I'd love to see this one go all the way.

4:15 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Why does Van Persie take the corners? Tell that big girl to get his head on them!

4:15 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I've seen enough. Get Kuyt off!

4:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Sounds like Van der Vaart is coming on - not Ruud. Just what must Van Horsey have said to van Basten?

4:18 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Van Bronckhorst now is the ref's book. That was a bit nasty. Looks like Figo headbutted Van Bommel, but I don't think the ref's seen it. maybe yellow?

4:22 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Figo nuts a guy in front of the ref and he's not walking to the dressing room? UNBELIEVEABLE referee.

4:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

This is all good for England to have these two sides sweating it out and picking up loads of niggles and yellow cards.

4:23 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

That was unbelievable. He gave him a ticking off, but that's it. Yellow.

4:24 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now's Figo's clutching his face as if he's been elbowed. Didn't see it at first. On the replay it looked pretty innocuous. Real acting. Lots of shoving on the bench. Who's off? They said Van Bronkhorst, but it didn't look like him.

4:26 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Who would win in a street fight - Big Phil or Marco?

4:27 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

boulahrouz is the one that's sent off.

4:27 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Agreed. Almost as bad as Rivaldo in '02.

4:28 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Cheers. They got it wrong on the coverage. He's a center back, right?

4:28 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Kuyt's got to go. Unfortunately with that sending off, it changes Van Basten's plans.

4:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

this russian ref has been awful throughout and needs to be sent home. 3 yellows is just dozy, but ivanov has been fussy and permissive in equal measure completely altering the character of this game.

here's a subject for debate. how many games have been ruined by these refs. i'd suggest quite a few.

4:30 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Van Bommel's off - about time, he could easily pick up a second yellow in this climate. Still no Van Horsey.

4:30 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Big Phil is a light heavyweight. MVB is welterweight at best. Big Phil in 3.

4:31 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, I agree. I can think of several:

1) Spain vs. Ukraine
2) Italy vs. U.S.
3) Aussies vs. Croatia

4:33 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

They're piling it on now. Come on you Orange!

4:33 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

the dutch reallly have to go balls out to draw this in regular time. it's past time for the gelding and robben is just out of ideas. he simply ran that to the byline to get a corner. and he and van persie are not linking at all.

4:34 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Deco - off! Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke! This is excellent!

4:41 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

One more off for the Portuguese and I think the referee is forced to the abandon the match by FIFA rules. This could get historical.

4:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

listen to harksey. what a prat. the portuguese started thugging this one from the off and that little cheat deco got his just deserts. justice will only be done when figo gets hit with another pigs head.

4:42 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, Kuyt just didn't have the quality to dink it over Ricardo. And now Ricardo is down and rolling around like a big girl.

4:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, Harkesy's judgment is really off at times. I think it's that he's too close to have the right perspective.

4:44 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

How much extra time will they add on here - ten minutes? Fifteen? This has been out of control for at least half an hour now.

4:45 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I would love to see Figo go off now, love it!

4:46 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

and ricardo is down now. harkes has lost it as much as the ref when he says that there's any excuse for this delay.

look, the russian ivanov has ruined every game he's been in charge of this tournament. fifa know exactly what they've got with this guy and they know that this is one possible outcome.

van basten has obviously lost the plot too. to let his personality conflict keep van nistelrooy on the bench is just child-like behavior. the gelding could have changed this one.

OK, if you heard this one had 3 reds, wouldn't you assume that robben would be one of them. amazing

4:47 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Awesome Vennegoor of Hesselink is on. I've been looking forward to him all tournament.

And Figo's been subbed. Shame. I had a red card engraved for him.

4:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

there goes figo, but as a sub. shame. he's a stain on the game at this point in his career. scum.

4:48 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, all Robben has to do for me is to score a corker, run into the crowd and pick up his second yellow like he did for Chelski. Classic!

4:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

who just left when vennegor of hess... came on?

4:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

jesus, simao drags his boot over vds's face and he gets the 'calm down' palms down gesture from the ref????

4:51 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

van basten must not want the job anymore?

4:52 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Oh, that was the chance for Kuyt. You have to think that Ruud would have poked that one in. Van Basten's thrown this one away with his foolishness.

4:53 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Mathijsson came off. They're throwing everything up front.

4:55 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

kuyt had a penalty claim being held down by Valente?

4:56 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

one more red for the russian. van bronkhorst going going gone.

4:57 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Now Van Bronkhorst is off for a second yellow. What a shambles this match has turned into. It's thrilling stuff for a neutral like me, but I'd be having kittens if this were England involved.

4:58 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I like that conversation going on between Deco and Van Bronkhorst on the sidelines:

"Ref's a wanker, eh?

"Yeah, let's go piss in his gas tank!"

4:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Didn't think much of that penalty claim from Kuyt, but with this ref, anything's possible.

4:59 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time: 1-0. Not a bad result for England. I'd have preferred the Dutch at the start, but Portugal without Deco, Costinha and perhaps Cristiano Ronaldo is not a bad option.

5:00 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

A complete disgrace. Portugal came out kicking lumps out of the Dutch. They scored and then the ref took over and proceeded to completely screw up the game.

But a bigger collection of tossers than these Portuguese you simply couldn't find. I'm still supporting England but my second choice is now anyone playing Portugal. Golden generation? Pile of poo more like.

They'll be without Deco and Costinha and maybe Ronaldo too. If they review Deco's headbutt, they may suspend him for that and I would love it, love it, for England to give the rest of these sorry Portuguese bastards the pasting of the tournament.
