Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Who's the Best Catch?

With the new season mere weeks away, it's time to take stock of the big transfers. Which of the following is the best deal?

Boswinga to Chelsea for £16.2 mill.
Crouch to Portsmouth for £11 million
Deco to Chelsea for £7 million
Elmander to Bolton for £11 million
Jo to Citeh for £19 million
Keane to Liverpool for £20.3 million
Modric to Spurs for £16 million
Nasri to Arsenal for £15.8 million

probably DEco - the rest of those numbers are obscene. I am hoping nasri proved the best but financially Deco looks the soundest buy from this list.
I would say Crouch but Pompey are ambitionless - Redknapp is happy not to lose to big 4 teams but his squad (when it had Muntari) was better than that and I felt he should have been ashamed for the team strategies he often devised.

I agree with you, Simon. Deco seems the best buy. I assume that his relatively low value is due to his advancing age and the reality of his situation at Barca. Why else would be valued by Chelski at less than half the price of Boswinga, granted a younger player, but still a right back!

Of course Crouch's value is exaggerated because he's English. Who knows - he may do well under Harry Redknapp and paired up with Kanu or Defoe. But honestly - £20 million for Keane, a player who couldn't even get into Spurs's first team regularly, seems silly money for Liverpool to splash around. I wouldn't be surprised to see them fall prey to the same financial insecurities that have plagued my beloved LUFC in years to come.

Yes poor Luton - last I heard 30 points in the hole and facing almost certain relegation to the leagues of beyond.
Just kidding - i know you meant Leeds!

I think the truer number for Keane is 13 mill and that Spurs have been allowed to trump the number p as part of the deal. Thirteen seems a lot more reasonable, i just cant buy 20.

You're not far off. Gooner and I grew up in East Anglia and used to enjoy watching Luton Town on "The Big Match" on Sundays. Though I chose Leeds as my team - largely because of the Revie team - it really saddens me to see Luton in the kind of dire straits that they're in. In this age of high-stakes footie, any team can suffer that fate, I'm afraid.

Not sure I'd agree that I enjoyed Luton Town on those Sundays. I was always hoping for at least Norwich or Ipswich.

Luton in the early 80's were at least top division, I live 10 miles from Luton back in England but never had any affinity for them though did like Watford, Arsenal and Southampton where i was born.
