Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Coldplay Sued!

So Britband Coldplay are being sued by guitar maestro Joe Satriani for allegedly violating copyright on his jam "If I Could Fly" for their hit "Viva La Vida." Did Chris Martin and co. rip off Satriani? You be the judge.

I'd be interested in Mike Nocito's opinion here since he's the only musician in this crew.

There is real similarity here. But I'm always curious now that Rock 'n Roll is 55-60 years old, isn't it likely that there's going to be more overlap like this? Or is it possible that when a band like Coldplay get into the studio with a producer, the origin of a similar idea like this gets quite muddy? I listen to a lot of music, and I frequently twig on something in a new song that takes me back to something I've heard before.

In this case, wouldn't the thing to do be for Coldplay to cut Satriani in on some of the VLV loot without admitting any culpable plagerism? Is that possible?

I think you're absolutely right on both counts. There are only so many ways to put the chords together and I would be surprised if the Coldplay boys were students of Satriani's stuff.

However, given the obvious similarity - in fact, the most interesting element is that Satriani's solo makes a tasty top line of the Coldplay record - between the tunes, Chris Martin and co. could easily toss a few bucks in Joe's direction.

I'd love to hear Mike's opinion as well. Can you put us in touch, Dave?

Outstanding stuff! Thanks to Mike for adding a much needed professional opinion on this. I can't tell you how cool it is to think of our Mike hanging out with Mike Oldfield at Lords chatting about Tubular Bells. Makes me want to go out and buy a glockenspiel.

Cheers, Dave!

Have a look at this. Nine minutes of Tubular Bells from the Whistle Test - 1973. Heavy, man!

Thanks from me too, Mike and Davey. Mike's response just confirms that when you've got 4 people in a band who listen to music, working with a producer and engineers that also listen to music, there's bound to be overlap and the origin of ideas is bound to be muddy.

Anyway, everyone's ripping off Chuck Berry and Little Richard if you really want to get technical.

Here's the official press release from Coldplay responding to the suit:

"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song 'Viva La Vida.' We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours."

Those lads are surely just too nice to be proper rock stars.
