Champions League - Final Gameday!
Most footie eyes will be squarely on the Champions League's final round of matches today, though goodness knows why. The real drama will be at Elland Road, where plucky Kettering Town have earned a replay with the mighty Whites for the honor of getting absolutely mullered by ManYoo in the 3rd Round. Follow it with me if you've got the bottle.

To be fair, there is a wee bit of drama in the Champions League when it comes to the second slot, particularly in Group A, where Bayern and Juve meet to decide the honors. For one, the glory of the Round of 16 in the CL. For the other - the humiliation of the Europa League.
Don't forget the possibility that United's Brazilian twins could swap shirts whenever the ref wasn't looking--pretty much all the time if recent CL refs run to form--and create a bit of chaos.
"It was your brother I gave that ticking off to? Why, you little...come back here!"
Unfortunately neither Da Silva twin makes Fergie's cut tonight. Here's United's somewhat injury-ridden back-up lineup running out against Wolfsburg tonight:
Kuszszak, Park, Fletcher, Carrick, Evra, Nani, Scholes, Gibson, Anderson, Welbeck, Owen.
Hmmmm, so are we watching this shower or should we be watching Mighty Leeds thrash Kettering Town?
Mind, that United central pairing might be the source of a bit of comedy. We're likely to field a similarly young lineup tomorrow in Athens. We and they're lucky that this is a bloodless fixture and that we're both through.
Bummer, those cheaters at Porto are already up over Athletico. Here's a thought: Has anyone's stock dropped more quickly than Athletico's Arguero's? Not in my recent memory.
Apoel score!
and in other news, so does Cronaldo for Real.
Chelsea almost equalize and would have done so if not for the linesman's flag. Offside!
Same story at Juve. Trezuguet's marked off for offside.
Not panic stations yet for Real, but Marseille have equalized, and Porto's gone another goal ahead over Athletico. That group bears watching.
Essien equalizes for Chelsea. It's worth seeing tonight if the description of how hard he hit it is accurate.
And that's his night done. Immediately afterwards, Essien pulled up with a hamstring injury.
Someone pointed out that by the time that's healed, he'll be off to the ACN. That little Zhirkov replaces him.
Chelsea score again. Drogba, of course.
Trezuguet this time scores for Juve, but immediately after that, a penalty to Bayern is awarded. Their keeper Butt takes a full length run from his box and blasts it home to equalize. Not really, he just tucks it in with typical German efficiency. Wouldn't it have been great though if he had?
Zurich is in front of Milan!!! Can this happen again?
I am here with 10 to go til half
I will take a nil niller
OH YESSS!!!
Bechio strikes for Leeds setting up a Gator v UWS matchup in the next round. 1-0 Leeds.
Leeds are one up against Kettering
The clock watch is pretty entertaining. All of my feeds last about 3 minutes before buffering and buffering and buffering.
Welcome aboard Davey.
Nani tries a shot from about 50 out with the keeper gone walkabout.... it was a Nani shot!
Hey Steve
FSC actually have Martin and Andy on the microphones!
CSKA has scored. Wolfsburg would be out?
YES!!!
MICHAEL OWEN SCORES FOR UNITED!!!!
Nice cross by Nani... clinical header by wee Mikey
I dunno. That's your group, no?
Half time
United are up.
Apparently there should have been a pen against United.
The Beeb say
Man Utd goal: It's daylight robbery - but United won't care. Nani gets some space down the left and swings over a right-footed cross that Michael Owen nips in to head into the bottom corner from six yards.
Nice! Congrats. How does the makeshift backline look? Has it been tested at all?
It could be a three way time if United lost but United would still win the group.
I guess CSKA are in and Wolf is out
Juve 1 Bayern 1 at half
I haven't seen it but I think Wolfsburg missed to glorious headers and the non Pen
Last time I saw, Chelsea were losing 1-0, it is now 2-1 at half
Zurich 1 Milan 0
Marseille 1 Madrid 1
Milan would be out
I have Gillette Soccer Special on from VSS and United on the TV.
Lovely Jubbly
Bayern's goal was scored by their Keeper from the spot
Bob,
three is a Leeds link on VSS
http://www.livevss.net/live-tv.php?s=itv4
one on atdhe as well
I know! That was why I fantasized about Butt starting his penalty run up from his own goal, running the length of the field and thumping it in.
Or as happened before to him, his penalty is saved, and Buffon calmly distributes the ball out to someone who then lobs the despairing keeper as he tries to dash back to his own goal. Evidently that's happened to Butt in the Bundesliga at least once and well worth a seach for it on youtube.
Dunno where Bob went off to. Perhaps he didn't put up the "in conference" sign on his office door before some student came by with a question.
Ipswich are only drawing nil nil at half
From Dogboy, via text on 81111: "We're so desperate for a goal here at Ipswich, the celebration music was played AFTER the referee disallowed the goal!"
What a numpty!
Second half is underway
CSKA has to do better than Wolfsburg
If Milan and Marseille do the same, Milan would go through.
I take that back, Marseille have to win
Leeds have reached half time
45 minutes to start hating Leeds again
Boro are losing at home to Blackpool!
Essien pulled a hammy tonight!
Bayern have taken the lead at Juve
Juve would be out
So could Milan and so could Inter tomorrow
Wolfsburg starting to get some more chances
Wolfsburg get their goal
1-1... it has been coming
Nice header
If the scores stay the same, it will be a three way time but I think United would still win the group.
If CSKA don't win, it would be Wolfsburg's group
I still don't understand why Essien was risked tonight.
Inside the mind of Ancelotti
03:08pm -- "I am a genius. Essien has scored.
03:12pm -- "Mama Mia!" (hands clasped and doing that rapid prayer thing)
It's likely that he's only going to recover in time to board a plane to Africa with Kalou and Drogba and Obi-wan Mikel for the ACN. Of course they've always got that little Zhirkov for cover.
I am really out of it today.
If Wolfsburg get another than it would be a three way tie
That's a tighter group than I thought. I'd really not paid much attention except our group. And we're through top even if we put x-tra wide shorts on Pat Rice and Stevie Bould to make up the 11.
I hope United do win the group!
They have had enough chances to wrap up the group for the last three weeks!
Apparently, it is all Bayern in Juve
Drogba just flashed an effort this wide from a free kick. It's the same free kick that he's attempted against Arsenal, Citeh, and now Apoel. Guess which effort went in? Great effin' bollix he is.
It is like Pompey and their penalties!
Martin Tyler, ESPN's commentator for the World Cup, has confirmed that if CSKA win it doesn't matter what happens here. United would be group winners
Madrid have taken the lead in Marseille.
Milan will be safe
I suppose. He's having a tremendous season again which doesn't please me.
Maybe he'll catch the malaria like Kolo did last year during the ACN. That was the end for Kolo and if it had to happen to a footballer, why couldn't it have been Drogba? Or Dioff? Someone that deserves it.
Hpoe so
Milan have tied it up... a good two minutes for Milan
I'm here for the start of the second half at Elland Road. Still 1-0 through that Becchio goal. Good to see him bang on form again after his injury.
Calisle youth and Stoke Youth drew nil nil!
Hey Bob
Do you have a link working?
United should have done better there
Wellbeck blew it and so did Owen
Lovely link up through Atdhe. Elland Road looking and sounding good tonight.
Milan are also a man up on Zurich now. The bloke that gave away the pen has been dismissed. Milanese hearts now beating a little slower.
Kettering giving it more of a go than I'd hoped. I'd love to see them roll over at this point. I WANT UNITED!
atdhe's link is working for Leeds
NO ONE is in the stands!!
Ooh, lovely ball in from Snoddy but well defended. Becchio nearly got on the end of that one.
I bet you can hear which ****'s going home in an ambulance it's so clear, no?
They all spent their dosh at the weekend. We had nearly 40K for that thriller with local rivals Huddersfield.
Obertan and Valencia come on for Nani and Wellbeck
Aidan White is limping off to be replaced by Peter Capaldi, who despite his name is a Northern Ireland international apparently.
Obertan was available but didn't start? That's short-sighted. He needs games to fit in. And I'm always sad when Nani's withdrawn. You know I rate him.
Luton are three up against Rotherham
Sotton up on the south coast
Actually, you're right Gooner. There was a big chant of "Manchester Wank Wank Wank" just a moment ago. Clear as a bell. I reckon the Leeds faithful are getting their voices limber for that trip to OT next month.
Oh, that was a dangerous break there for Kettering. Earns them a corner. Don't like it at all. Close those buggers down!
I've got the sound down of the Leeds link
BRING ON YOUR WHITES!!!
" White's going home in a St.John's ambulance!"
BTW, it could be Kettering
Approaching the hour mark here at ER. Snoddy gives away a dangerous looking free kick at the edge of the area.
Oi, put a sock in it!
Soccer Special says that Leeds should be out of sight
Porto are three up at Athletico Madrid
Great comment there from the commentator. Camera catches a woman wearing a ridiculously large fur hat:
"Well, it's cold but I'm not sure it's that cold!"
oh my god
Kettering have scored!!
Bollocks!!!! What happened?
BUGGGGGERRRRR! I lost my link and when I got it back, Kettering have scored! What happened?
I've got my lucky Leeds shirt on. What should I do, Dave?
YES!!!!!!!
MICHAEL OWEN SCORES AGAIN!!!!
TAKE IT OFF!!!
Well played by Oberatan to get the ball over to Owen
Bayern are three one up!
Juve will be out... have a good semi against Costa
5 to go in Germany
And there's the difference. When United's backs are up against the wall, they come out and do the biz. That's what's so galling about the situation at the Emirates. Yeah, RVP, Rosicky, Nik, Diaby, Clichy, etc are out, but that's when Vela, Eddie, etc should step it up.
Right - it's coming off.
Madrid are three one up
Ronny with the goal
Does your match go straight to pens Bob? Extra time? What?
It should have been off long ago!
Not sure what the format is, to be honest.
Oh, by the way IT'S LEEDS TIME!!!!
It is off now, mate. Twenty minutes left to finish these buggers off.
Cheers, mate!
ooh, Owen almost going in for a third
WBA down to ten men. Keeper sent off and a pen to Cardiff already being 1-0 up
Chelsea have been pegged back
Besiiktas have tied it up.
What are they playing at!?
If Wolfsburg tie it up, they would go through
Cardiff have the pen saved but the rebound is put in
Good news for the Toon
Wolfsburg should have had a tap in inside the six yard box but missed it... United go down and Owen scores his hat-trick!!!
Great finish from Owen!
ooh,
Beckford should have done better there
Bayern are FOUR one up
Oooh, that was close from Beckford. He kind of took it off Snoddy's toe. Corner to Leeds.
Bayern have won!
Oh, the corner came over, Kilkenny rifled one back in and JB couldn't turn it home. Good pressure though.
Fifteen to go at Elland Road
IT IS LEEDS TIME!!
All over in Germany... United win 3-1
Now it is Leeds time to get their win!
Oooh, Kilkenny hit another one and Tubby just scrambled it by the post.
Chelsea draw but top the group
So it's United and CSKA through and Wolfsburg into the Europa, yes?
Oh, JB could have done better there with that shot. Howson did well to find him.
JB should have done better there as well
Make Tubby work
24 to 5 shots
Kilkenny goes down really late in the box looking for a penalty fruitlessly. Should have picked up a yellow for that performance, tbf.
"MARCHING ON TOGETHER......."
Yup, if CSKA don't get a late winner
Ah, Hughes had a chance to whip in a cross but he floated it up for Tubby to catch.
CSKA has scored a LATE winner to go through
Inside the last ten minutes here. This is agony.
Ipswich and Peterboro draw nil nil
Beckford went for an ambitious one but it was never going to dip in there. The commentator says he should have had six or seven tonight. That would have been nice.
Hughes got back well there to thwart the Kettering counter.
I have to go off to college.
Wish I could help you root them on!!
Best of luck... it is after 80 minutes
IT IS LEEDS TIME!
Take care Bob and Steve... best of luck Leeds
Bugger - Snoddy hit one on the volley and they were claiming handball. Well, it did strike the arm but it would have been hard for him to pull it away.
Cheers, mate. Talk to you tomorrow.
sounds like Leeds is still all over them.
Oh, nice turn from Snoddy and just wide. He's looked the most dangerous of our players. Should have tested Tubby with that one.
Yeah - we are all over them but still no breakthrough.
Kilkenny wins another corner for us. Less than five to go now.
just that little bit of magic and luck. that's all that you need. c'mon now.
Michalik and Bromby up again for this one but it's hit low to the near post. Out again for another one.
Snoddy hits this one short and...nothing.
COME ON, YOU WHITES!
Snodgrass hits one from the top of the box and it's another corner. Kettering just about hanging on here.
OOOOOOH - Tresor Kandol had a free header there but he put it wide. No excuse for that. What a waste!
Simon Grayson was trying to nod that one home from the touchline. He's got to be hating this one. The last thing we need is another exhausting bout of extra time and penalties.
This. Is. Agony.
OFF THE POST!
Peep peep peeeeeeep. That's full time and we have extra time to come.
Kettering get us started in the first period of extra time. Come on - let's kill them off early.
Good possession for us at the beginning of the period.
Lovely run from Bromby there but his ball only earned a corner. #17 of the evening for us.
All Leeds at the moment, but still no breakthrough.
Had to take a call and I've just got caught up. Shame that one didn't hit the post and go in.
C'mon mate, the LOB nation is behind the Leeds tonight.
OOOOHHHH - Snoddy off the bar again!
A total siege on the Kettering goal now.
I appreciate that. It's got to happen.
Their center back - Ian Roper - looks completely gassed now.
No s**t. He's faced defended two dozen corners. Probably has a pre-concussion syndrome as well.
The pace has definitely gone out of the game. Patient build-up and possession from us now. Kettering have parked the proverbial bus.
And on it goes. Nearly ten minutes into this first period of extra time. I don't fancy penalties at all. I want it finished now.
Kettering just knocking the ball about when they occasionally get possession. They're not really looking to push it up.
I wonder if we have any subs left. I know that Tresor Kandol came on for Becchio.
Looks like we've got one more change if Simon wants it. Mike Grella might make a nice change in the second period of extra time.
One more minute of stoppage time in this period before the turn around.
Snodgrass hits another one but it's woefully wide this time.
First period of extra over and we're fifteen minutes from penalties now.
And here comes Grella. Nice one, Simon.
Andy Hughes coming off. So an attacking midfielder on for a fullback. A good attacking move from Grayson.
Fifteen minutes to win it. Come on!
Oh, Grella did well to get that one over but Snoddy snatched at it right in front and popped it over.
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
The American supersub Mike Grella with what I sincerely hope is the winner!
Leigh Bromby did ever so well out wide right to beat several tackles and still get his ball over.
2-1!
Great - we're going for it, looking for the third one.
YESSSSS!!!!!!!
Kandol nods home the third one. That's got to be it now. Kettering put up a terrific resistance but it's over now.
Snoddy with a marvelous ball over that Kandol couldn't miss.
Ten minutes left - the floodgates are finally open and now we can relax.
Now Beckford bursts forward and produces a brilliant save from Tubby.
Fantastic! I had a call and then a itinerary to redo and am delighted to get back now to seeing that it's a done deal for Leeds. Congrats. Shouldn't have been the squeaker that it's been, but happy days.
Five minutes left in extra time now. It's just left for us to avoid injury now.
4-1! What a terrific strike from Mike Grella.
JB tried his luck a moment ago only to be thwarted again but Grella showed the top scorer how it's done. Wonderful!
At last! JB gets his just desserts. Knocks home a easy tap in. He must have had 40 chances tonight but he finally stuck it home.
5-1!
Beckford's 15th goal of the season there.
"We want six!" is the cry from the stands. Luv it!
Into stoppage time....
Oooh, Grella nearly had his hat-trick there. Over the top.
WAY TO GO!!
Just checked your comments without looking anywhere else
YOUR LOT ARE GOING DOWN!!
I CAN HATE LEEDS!!
Full time: Well, that was heavier work than it should have been but in the end the floodgates opened with four goals in the second period of extra time. Mike Grella was clearly the spark in that period, with two goals and lots of dangerous running.
It's Manchester United v. Leeds United at Old Trafford on January 2. Can't wait!
