Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

There was some chatter about Carlton Cole during the season, but I'm happy to see that he hasn't been included. I'm surprised that Carrick and Agbonlahor haven't been included. Sick Note Hargreaves hasn't played for United since the late 50s - not surprised by his exclusion. Owen - time has passed wee Mikey by, sadly. Not happy that Calamity is in the squad - the goalkeeping slot is our weak link I suspect. In all other areas, I'm really happy with the choices.

Carrick's in the squad . . .

Here’s my starting eleven:

Robert Green (West Ham)

Rio Ferdinand (West Ham Youth Academy)

Glen Johnson (West Ham Youth Academy)

John Terry (West Ham Youth Academy)

Matthew Upson (West Ham)

Michael Carrick (West Ham Youth Academy)

Frank Lampard (West Ham Youth Academy)

Scott Parker (West Ham)

Jermain Defoe (West Ham Youth Academy)

Joe Cole (West Ham Youth Academy)

Wayne Rooney (ManYoo)

I can’t believe Carlton Cole didn’t make it after being featured in the Vanity Fair underwear spread . . .

At first glance, the likely first 11 look good even if you like I believe that the keeper position is the least settled.

A fit one of the three, with Cashley, Rio, Tiny-tears, and Johnson in defense, Lennon, Lampard or Gerrard, Barry, and Milner/SWP/Theo in the mid, and Rooney up top pretty much picks itself. Pair Rooney with any of Bent, Crouch, Defoe or Heskey, OK.

But it really will depend on these 10 or 11 staying fit and keeping discipline which will reveal whether England will do well or not. Rooney goes down or loses his rag and gets a 2-3 match ban, you better hope that England gets plenty of penalties for Fat Frank to rattle in pro-forma. I don't fancy any of the strikers apart from Rooney to make a splash and certainly not in the absence of Rooney.

I also don't imagine that Upson and Warnock and certainly not the brittle King or the crap-fest that Dawson is would be replacement for either Rio or TT and none of the novices from Huddlestone, Johnson, or Parker fill me with hope.

I think it's a mistake to write off Gabby, Carlton, or BobbyZ. Gabby's not in great form, neither is Carlton, so you can see what Don Fabio's thinking, but BobbyZ is in the form of his life. You'd like to see Capello take that kind of chance instead of including a serial waster like Bent and a past-it Ivanhoe.

Well spotted, Johnno....

I agree with Gooner that most of the squad are surplus. Beyond injuries and suspensions, you can only imagine the likes of Theo, SWP, Milner and Defoe being used off the bench after the hour mark. If Dawson, King, Upson, Warnock, Huddlestone, Johnson, Parker, or Bent get any playing time, we're in deep trouble.

My starting XI for June 12:

Green, G. Johnson, Ferdinand, Terry, A. Cole, Barry, Lampard, J. Cole, Lennon, Crouch, Rooney.

Against the two lesser sides, Fabio might want to consider playing a back three, playing two wingers or a midfield diamond with Gerrard at the top of it and three up front (e.g., Rooney, Defoe, Crouch).

Sorry about that... missed Michael Carrick

I see that Hargreaves stormed out of Old Trafford after not being in the line up to face Stoke.... he doesn't make the squad.... not a happy camper!

Wayne Bridge stuck to his guns and did not want to play with Shmuck Terrry
