Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
250 Comments:
So, are we going to see a '73 Sunderland, a'76 Southampton, an '87 Coventry, an '88 Wimbledon, a '95 Everton OR are we going to see a '92 Sunderland an'03 Southampton '04 Millwall???
Hopefully a '73 Sunderland as opposed to an '83 Brighton or '97 Middlesborough. I would love to see Pompey win the cup. Unfortunately,I will not be able to join you as I have a work commitment.I am recording the match.
I'll be there, Dave! Looking forward to it!
Cup Final Day - what memories. I remember I used to get up early and feast on all the Cup Final telly all day. Not quite the same these days. Instead of watching Football Focus with Morcambe and Wise guesting, I've got the L1 playoff on.
I can't tell you how relieved I am not to have to pay attention to the L1 playoffs this season.
In the first leg, Swindon beat Charlton 2-1 yesterday. This morning, Huddersfield are 0-0 with the odious Millwall.
Morning Bob
What memories I have of the Cup Final. My first real memories were from the '72 edition with your lot winning with a Sniffer Clarke diving header. Mick Jones hurting his shoulders.
The following year, I remember the BBC talking to Sunderland and Leeds at the their hotels. Leeds sitting like a team photo and Sunderland lounging around the room with their feet up!
In '75, my biggest memory was thinking how did Fulham make the Cup Final and my beloved hadn't made it in my life time!
That all changed the next year! Of course, we all know what happened! Joel came over to give me grief!. I wouldn't come out... I was crying!
The next year made up for that!!
Glad you don't have to worry about it too
FSC's preview show has just started!
Who's wearing blue today
These two teams are the only two teams to win the Cup at the new stadium
Morning, Dave! Thanks for the heads-up. I'm onto FSC now.
"Pitch looks a very strange, sandy colour in parts. Time will tell if problems cured but some worried looks already."
My first Cup Final was also 1972. It was a big part of reinforcing my choice of Leeds United as my team. Still with them nearly forty years later.
I was the one crying the next year. Bloody Sunderland!
Morning, Dave!
Teams coming off the bus now, looking very sharp. Calamity with the iPod on. What a tosser!
The Wembley pitch looks terrible! You can see the patches on the telly!
Morning Bob
Huddersfield and Millwall coming to the end of the 90 minutes now - still 0-0. Advantage Lions.
I think I said good morning to you twice, for some reason. Ah well, it's always good having a natter with you about the footer on a Saturday morning.
It's Graduation Day here at Fredonia. I'll be heading over to campus to share the big day with my students after the match.
Glad they didn't impose on the Cup Final!
So what's the plan for the first weekend of the World Cup. Are you lot coming here or am I coming there?
Me too - last year, we had a 9 am ceremony. I'm really happy with the 3 pm kickoff this year.
Just great!
The show is about to show the teams and FSC go to a commercial!
Unfortunately, I'll be at a conference in Indianapolis next weekend and will miss the Champions League final and an England friendly on FSC. Bugger!
The beauty of the DVR allows me to pause it
The Chelsea side
Cech
Ivanovic
Cole
Lampard
Drogba
Bollocks
Malouda
Kalou
Terry
Alex
Anelka
It's hard to get stronger than that side. I might have Joe Cole over Bollocks, but it's still very strong.
Crowd trouble at Huddersfield.
Millwall fans trying to cause some agro
THAT'S WHY I DON'T WANT THEM TO GO UP!!
EVER!!!!
Can't Millwall be banned for life?
Just like old days, the Scottish Cup Final is being played on the same day. I always remember seeing the goal highlights at half time and the end of the match
Today's game
Dundee United vs ROSS COUNTY!
Fans streaming into Wembley Way now. Wish I were there. I love the walk up to the stadium from the Tube.
Do you think these shots that FSC are showing are live?
There is only 45 minutes to kick off
Looks like Chelsea are in blue. Pompey players are wearing red shorts
How many deflected goals does Lamps score every year - struth!
Probably not live shots. As long as they have the game on live, I'll be happy.
Where's It's An FA Cup FInal Knockout!!
Both Line ups

Where's the Goal of the Season?!
The pitch looks even worse from the aerial shot!
Here's the recap of the Cup season. You're going to get a Jermaine Beckford goal at OT in a moment - best close your eyes!
Get in there! YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
JB... do they really have to show that goal!
You beauty!
I told you to close your eyes!
No injuries to the England starting XI today - Cashley, JT and Lamps.
Abide with Me!
Abide With Me
I much prefer the fans singing and he band playing instead of some tart in red singing!
FSC slightly behind Five Live and then they bugger off to commercial!
It's an FA Cup final day ritual that goes all the way back to 1927, when Cardiff City beat Arsenal 1-0 - the first final to be broadcast on BBC Radio.
That is Abide with Me
Chelsea wearing their new shirts for next season
Crossword help
Banquo's killer
Come on Calamity... how much more pink can your shirt be? None, none more pink!
Teams in the tunnel now. Live shot? I agree with you about "Abide with Me." Much better sung by the crowd.
Where's Chelski Lad
That's "Macbeth," right?
Indeed - where is Tony? Down the pub?
FSC not showing Prince William meeting the teams
Why?
Prince William a big Villa fan as is the new PM Cameron!!
Surely they will have to win something soon
FSC way behind again!
Ta... it fits
You're just so smart!
The answer is probably "Macbeth," although strictly speaking it's one of his henchmen that does the killing in the play. I'm not sure that the killer even has a name. Try "Macbeth."
Glad to help out!
Any predictions for the match? I'm going 3-1 Chelski with goals from Lamps, Drogs and Malouda.
Here we go then....kickoff!
Heart is winning out!
Pompey 2-1
Of course, I thought Wigan, Costa and Stoke had a chance against Chelski!!!
Chelsea 17 The Rest NIL
PLAY UP POMPEY
POMPEY PLAY UP
We're off!
Play up Pompey! Pompey Play up!
Everton, through Saha, scored about now last year
Players already having trouble with the pitch. Bloody hell!
Why didn't that guy make a run at the back post and put pressure Ivanovic?
The ball isn't even rolling truly on this pitch. What a horror show. Should be a bloody billiards table out there on a day like this.
Didn't Rooney turn his ankle on this pitch? JT isn't running easily.
Oh - Lamps goes close!
ooh Lamps hits one just wide
See how Chelsea are United want-a-be s..... a splash of red on the shirt
I like this kit better than the one with the breast implants.
Does the splash of red make you like them just a teeny bit more?
I'm not enjoying this at all. I'm having nightmares of England players picking up injuries. Pull them off now!
Avram Grant enjoying himself as usual. Does he ever smile?
Players having a difficult time crossing a decent ball over on this rotten pitch.
Jamie O'Hara has picked up a knock now.
Only that Lampard chance to show for the first ten minutes. Fairly scrappy stuff. Very little decent football.
I think they should take off Lamps
I don't care if Terry hurts himself11
Play up Pompey
Nasty challenge by Foy on Anelka. Chance for Chelski to float one in now.
Lamps hits one and it goes straight into the wall. Rubbish delivery. I agree with you - get Lamps off!
I thought that deflection off the wall was going to fall to a blue
Brown kicks out at Lamps now. Ouch!
Oh - Lamps has another go and shaves the angle!
Hi Guys .
Don't worry , Chelski lad is about .
No Bob , I'm not up the pub . It's a
bit early even for me .
Pitch looks rubbish here as well .
Lamps off the frame of the goal
He better be like this in the summer!
He was hopeless in Germany
Great turn by Drogs sets up Malouda and Anelka forces a save from Calamity at the near post!
Hiya, Tony! I wasn't casting aspersions. I'd be down the pub on a day like this!
Anelka makes James make a save
Chelsea starting to turn the screw
Score Pompey
Just think, if all the administration garbage wasn't around, Pompey would be in Europe and Costa WOULDN'T!!
It's all Chelski pressure so far. Tony should be happy.
Hey Bruv
Let's go Pompey!!
Let's win it for Mum!
Another free kick opportunity now. Alex to hit one?
Alex has one deflected and James decides not to pick it up and gives the ball back.
Pompey at least have it up the Chelski end for once!
Twenty minutes gone now and the good news is that there haven't been any injuries to England players yet.
Drogba has two bites at the cherry and can't finish it.
Great move by Chelsea, when it got to the foot of the spoiled brat I thought it was in... twice!
ooh, HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN!!!!
POMPEY SO CLOSE!!!
Jim Montgomery type save!
Decent chance for Prince Boateng, well saved by Cech point blank from Dindane!
Don't mention that name!
sorry mate
Pompey defenders getting some key blocks in, this time from an Anelka shot from distance.
Just a reaction save by Cech... nothing like what's his name's save from a Cup Final in the early Sevenites
Hideous tie on Ancelotti - what is he thinking? I thought that Italians were classy dressers!
Oh - how did Kalou miss from that range! Cashley with a beautiful set up.
WHAT A MISS!!!!!!!
Six yards out and Kalou hits the bar!!
NAME ON THE TROPHY!
Drogs goes for a Van Basten special and gets it all wrong.
I hate him but I hope Cashley does that this summer!
Pompey giving up too many free kick chances. Now it's Terry off the bar!
What miss would worse than that?
They are talking the Brighton guy who missed but it was saved by Garry Bailey
Off the bar by Terry
NAME ON THE TROPHY
I agree - I'd give him the freedom to romp up the left against the lesser teams in the group stages.
Gary who...?
Half an hour gone. Chelski have hit the woodwork three times without luck. Pompey have had one good chance. Still 0-0 though.
Pitch looks terrible but the players don't seem to be losing their feet like in the semis
Oh - Bollocks has struck out against Prince Boateng. How can he stay on the pitch after that?
Not even a card for Bollocks?!
I hate him but Bollocks didn't do much wrong there
Memory Question
Which Cup Final did we miss because of us having a game?
What about the afters?
Dindane whiffs on a good opportunity.
ooh, Pompey should have done better there
Boateng chomps on Bollocks once again. The ref has got to get a handle on this match quickly.
Yes - Boateng into the book.
Bollocks is still down. All Mannschaft fans holding their breaths. Good thing it wasn't Lamps.
Bollocks is hurt... out of match? SA!!
looks okay
Belletti warming up for Bollocks now. He's limping off gingerly.
Answer the memory quiz
Was that in????
Geoff Hurst style.
Not sure!
How many times have they hit the woodwork??
Chelski with the belated free kick now. Drogs hits it and....is it in!
I'm not sure that the ball is over the line. Great save James. A real '66 final moment there. What does the Russian lineman make of it?
Not fully!
sshhh.... more that Hurst's though
Not much...he's probably snuffed it, curled up his tootsies
That would have been the 1982 Cup Final. Was it Spurs and QPR. The one that went to a replay, right? Tony Currie was at QPR at that point. Gave away a pen in the replay?
Good decision I think .
good save James .
Correct
We were on the bus coming home from a match
I think the decision was just about right too. James is making a case to Don Fabio today. He saves at Drogs' feet now.
ooh, Sunderland Leeds get a mention... it wasn't me
We were rubbish that day, as I remember. We'd had the Prom the night before. I seem to remember having to pick up Casey Murchison at his house because he'd missed the bus. One or two players still drunk and throwing up before kick-off. What a shambles! Stan the Man was not best pleased.
I'm not paying attention to those 1973 references. Blanking them out.
Bollocks is done
Last appearance for the Blues?
Belletti is coming on for Bollocks after all. Germans won't be happy.
Five times, according to the Beeb, the woodwork has been struck!
Keep it Pompey
Chelski CAN'T SCORE!!!
A big scramble in the Pompey box again. James is laughing at the action. He's enjoying himself!
Into two added minutes
Chelski can blame their bad luck on David James's lucky pink shirt.
Another miraculous block from Makoena there. Maybe off his arm?
The Cup Final up North is scoreless at half time
I'd love to see Ross County pick up a trophy.
0-0 at half-time. Off to wash some dishes.
Half time
Scoreless but entertaining
This is like the Spurs Pompey semi... many chances but no goals until Pompey score late!
Play Up Pompey
Pompey get us underway. They've been riding their luck so far with five chances against their bar in the first half. I have a sneaking suspicion that this might go to extra time.
Early Pompey free kick here...comes to nothing.
Boateng is down after Drogs had nobbled him on the back of the head. Penalty?
I am back from a shower and shave
Play up Pompey!
oooh, Boateng was open there!
That was closer than I thought!
Good for you, mate. I'm still in my robe. I suppose I'll have to put some pants on for Graduation.
Pompey have enjoyed a lively start to the second half.
please do
I'll think about it....
good spell of possession by Pompey... watch Chelsea go down and score
Penalty for Pompey!!!!!!!
PENALTY!!!!!
COME ON POMPEY!!!!
CAST IRON!!
Belletti brings down Dindane.
Please score... bugger!!!!!!!!
useless penalty
Boateng to take...and saved by Cech's feet!!!!
Will anyone score today? It was a poor, poor penalty. Did JT put him off before the kick? Wow!
Is that only the second penalty to be missed?
Cech did well to save with his feet. I've seen those go in straight down the middle after a keeper commits.
Now it's a free kick for Chelski. Watch Lamps or Drogs stick this one in.
Free kick to Drogs!
I am so bummed!!
BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER!!
GOAL! And there it is - told you so!
Drogs rifles one in off James and the post.
I HATE HIM
That almost looked like the Ronaldo technique off the valve of the ball. Straight dipping up and down.
I guess Gary L. missed a pen too
But you have to admire the technique. Ivory Coast are going to be a real handful this summer with Drogs and Kalou up front. I'm really glad we're not in that group with Portugal and Brazil. Whew!
Oh - Dindane was in again but his touch was poor.
Any comment from Chelskilad?
Those finals of missed penalties were in my dark years of the FA Cup... 88-93
Drogs hits the ball more with the inside of his foot
Ronny hits with his instep
Kalou almost doubles Chelsea's lead
I don't think it was a sidefooted effort from Drogs. It was just like Ronaldo, striking it with the laces of the boot straight on the valve of the ball.
And now Kalou goes just wide. The floodgates could open now.
Take JT, Lamps and Cashley off now!
What kind of sponsor is "Jobsite?"
Dindane's rolling about like a little girl now, trying to get JT into trouble.
That was nasty by Terry
He should be in the book
Agreed. Book him and then take him off!
Surely time for some Pompey changes now. Supersub Kanu?
I wouldn't care if Terry doesn't play for England.
I'd take Rio and Ledley or Rio and Dawson
I just think Terry is a thug
From Jason, Watford, via text to 81111: "Is KPB the only German who is a useless penalty taker? If only he were playing for Germany in the WC and not Ghana."
No thanks - Rio and JT are still England's #1 pairing. You won't be calling him a thug if he sticks a header in from a corner against Brazil in the semis or Spain in the final, now will you?
Dundee United are winning 1-0 at Hampden Park
I told you I am still here .
Oh dear - Ancelotti's not trying to help England's causes is he? It's Joe Cole coming on for Kalou now.
I will... I hate him
I don't say that about Lamps, Gerrard and co
Drogs almost in again
And what do you think of it so far, Tony?
James is staking a big claim to be England's #1 today. That worries me.
