So, the rumors of the day have James Milner replacing Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Defoe replacing Emile Heskey

Morning, Dave! I'm here in Blue Devil HQ ready for the match. This is the kind of match for a darkened room and the full mojo going. Like yesterday, I'll be following the England match live and then taking a look at the US match on tape from 12 to 2.
Interesting rumors about the England team bouncing around the Internet this morning. It's all moot to my mind. I'm sticking with my view that any 11 from the 23 man England squad should beat Slovenia handily. England expect!
It's official - Milner and Defoe to start for England today.
Wow - Fabio seems to be responding to criticism about his policy regarding withholding the team news until the last moment. Here's the starting XI for the match against Slovenia today:
James, Johnson, Terry, Upson, A Cole, Milner, Barry, Lampard, Gerrard, Defoe, Rooney.
From the looks of that, it's a flat back four with Upson coming in to replace the suspended Jamie Carragher alongside John Terry. Barry will play the holding role, Milner will push out wide left, Lamps will work the central channel with Gerrard, who may or may not provide width on the right. Defoe comes in to replace Heskey alongside Rooney.
Come on, England!
To underscore the historical element, England have often had slow starts to their qualifying campaigns. In 1986, we lost the first match to Egypt 1-0 and were left needing a win in the third match against Poland. Gary Lineker delivered a hat-trick in that match. England ended up making a run to the quarterfinals when we were knocked out 2-1 with those two goals from Diego Maradona.
In 1990, we started with two draws that are identical to the ones we've had this summer - 1-1 against Ireland and 0-0 against Holland. We needed a win in the third match and duly delivered with a Mark Wright header that gave us a narrow 1-0 win. That started the incredible run to the semi-finals that ended with two missed penalties against Germany.
With an hour left until kick-off, a reminder of where we stand in Group C:
1. Slovenia GF 3 GA 2 GD 1 Pts 4
2. USA GF 3 GA 3 GD 0 Pts 2
3. England GF 1 GA 1 GD 0 Pts 2
4. Algeria GF 0 GA 1 GD -1 Pts 1
So, we're looking for two simple wins for England and the USA to see both sides through to the Round of 16.
And here's the USA starting XI:
Howard, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra, Bornstein, Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Dempsey, Gomez, Altidore.
This is Gomez in to replace of Findley up front with Jozy and Edu in the holding role to replace Torres. The biggest surprise is Jonathan Bornstein in to replace Gooch. I'm assuming that there's an injury problem there for Onyewu.
The coverage for the USA v. Algeria match has started up on ESPN.
The Slovenia line-up for today:
1-Samir Handanovic; 2-Miso Brecko, 4-Marko Suler, 5-Bostjan Cesar, 13-Bojan Jokic; 10-Valter Birsa, 8-Robert Koren, 18-Aleksandar Radosavljevic, 17-Andraz Kirm; 9-Zlatan Ljubijankic, 11-Milivoje Novakovic.
I'm listening to yesterday's Baddiel and Skinner podcast now. "Three Lions" about to be cued up.
I just spoke to Dad. He's excited like I knew he would be. He says his doctor rescheduled an regular appointment to today because he had a cancellation!!! I asked him why he didn't tell the guy to eff-off, but you know Dad. He'd rather be pushed around and grumble than tell anyone off. What a liberty.
