More Round of 16 Champions League Action
Well we had an exciting day of Champions League Action as Manchester United survived a late scare to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Champions League. It is a much quieter day as Chelsea host FC Copenhagen in what is basically a formality as they won 0-2 in Denmark. The other Champions League match may be more fascinating as Real Madrid host Lyon . These teams are meeting for the fourth season out of the past six seasons . How likely is that? They met in the group stages in 2006 and 2007 and met at this stage last season when Lyon prevailed. Lyon have actually been a bogey team for Real as they are UNDEFEATED in seven matches. Prior to this season they won every home match vs Real , keeping a clean sheet in every victory. All three matches at the Bernabeu ended in a draw. This season is different since the Special One has taken over. Real achieved their first draw in Lyon and scored their first goal in Lyon. It sounds like the momentum may shift Real's way based on this result and the Special One is known for having teams that win vital matches and score late winners. You will know for sure if you join us on LOB.

Thanks, MUR - I am home from work, the beer has been poured, the popcorn popped and I'm settling in as the FSC preview is starting up with Waldo, Warren and that Muppet Chris Sullivan on board.
No problem, BD. I need to see if I can skype you at halftime. I received some bad news about my sister-in-law about two minutes after I skyped you earlier today. I may need Steve to get me a good deal on a flight ticket. I am not sure yet.
The team news is in from the Bridge:
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Lampard, Zhirkov, Anelka, Drogba.
Subs: Turnbull, Essien, Torres, Malouda, Ferreira, Kalou, McEachran.
FC Copenhagen: Wiland, Wendt, Jorgensen, Antonsson, Bengtsson, Bolanos, Claudemir, Kvist, Vingaard, Gronkjaer, Ndoye.
Subs: Christensen, Bergvold, Santin, Kristensen, Zohore, Hooiveld, Delaney.
Referee: Svein Oddvar Moen (Norway)
Sorry to hear about your sister-in-law, David. I'm sure that Steve will be able to help you out. He's at:
1-800-395-8600
Btw, it was a pleasure chatting with you, Melanie and Elizabeth.
Thank you BD. She's still hanging in there, but my mom said it's not looking good.
We are having a picnic after the match , so I will have beer snacks in the driveway once the match ends.
The teams are in the tunnel.
FC Copenhagen are displaying those hot pink jerseys.
Afternoon fellas
sorry to hear your news
Wow - a picnic post-match sounds great. Unfortunately, we're far from picnic weather up here. I walked home from work and my face was raw when I got in.
Thank you, UWS. I appreciate it.
I took sparky for a walk. The conditions were similar to those in Boston in August. It looks like burgers, chips, and beer.
Welcome, UWS!
I love how the fans have started to just chant over the poxy CL anthem. It's one thing to respect national anthems but there's no excuse for that sad corporate soundfart.
Bob, please explain the Leeds owner news
did you hear about SAF and his 5 game ban?
He'd miss the semi, Arsenal and more
Copenhagen sporting a lovely shade of pink tonight. Danish men are clearly more evolved than the rest of us.
The moment's silence was ruined by some loud , idiotic jerks.
I wish Real was on
The match has kicked off. Palermo of Serie A wear pink as their first choice colors.
There have been rumors for years that there is a shadowy cartel behind closed doors at the Elland, UWS. Possibly Saudi in origin. The reason for the suspicion is that most feel that Ken Bates isn't wealthy enough to control the club right now. Capn' Birdseye is still the public face of the club, though. I dunno - the jury is out for me.
I agree. I can't believe they have been paired four of the past six seasons.
There's bound to be a link for the Real-Lyon match, UWS. It's being shown of Fox Soccer Plus.
Why is SAF banned. Did he say something(s) to an official?
Okay, UWS. Now it seems as if the commentary is ahead of the action today. I didn't really notice it yesterday but I do today.
Lampard should have put Chelsea ahead after a great run by Cashley.
Got one
http://www.vipcanals.net/ch4.html
Sound is out of sync alreaddy
I believe that it stems from the Chelski match aftermath where Fergie made some comment about how he'd given up hope on the match when he saw Martin Atkinson's name listed as referee. Naughty.
It was... write a letter
Strangely the ambient sound (crowd noise, sound of boot thumping against ball, e.g.) sounds alright but the commentators are chatting away about action that we haven't quite seen yet - about three or four seconds ahead.
That makes sense BD, but SAF was correct despite speaking out of turn. Perhaps he was a tad naughty.
Good move there from the visitors and Bosingwa was forced to give away a free kick in a dangerous area.
Bosingwa concedes a free kick just outside the box. A chance for Copenhagen.
I've lost my tv
Well, I think the penalties were absurd but I don't think managers should be speaking about assuming that the referee is going to be crap or biased. If anything, the big sides like United get more than their fair share of the breaks.
The free kick goes into the wall. The cross from Gronkjaer is headed away and Chelsea counter.
http://www.star-sports.eu/channel1.html
new link
A bit greedy there from Cole but then that's why we call him "Cashley."
A great break by Cashley , but what was he thinking with that shot? He was never going to score from that angle.
How is your pin-up idol Cristiano doing? I hear that he's barely fit.
did you see the news about Captain Marvel has throat cancer?
Copenhagen have a corner.
i hope Real get dumped
A poor start by Chelsea.
Decent hit from Drogs.
A decent effort from long range by Drogba, but comfortably saved by the keeper.
I just heard that the French international Abidal has cancer - is he "Captain Marvel?"
I have to find a different link... this one pauses every five seconds.
What's the deal with Chelsea
So who would you prefer in the quarters, UWS? MUR said that he'd prefer Spurs. I usually like to see the English sides avoid each other until absolutely necessary.
ESPN just showed Julio C' mistake yesterday for INter
Chelski are making somewhat heavy weather of this tie. Warren Barton predicted four or five goals earlier - they're going to have to pick up the pace to score on that level.
I had heard about that . It is sad to hear this .
I would take Lyon
I would even take Inter.. they don't seem too good and we have had a good record against them recently
Anelka was offside after a dangerous break by Bosingwa.
Offside again by Anelka.
There is only one Captain Marvel!
Inter is my second choice. I did not pick Lyon because I think Real Madrid will go through in that tie.
It seems like Chelski's main chances will come on the break. Anelka again. Three times in three minutes.
Lovely move there but Zhirkov just couldn't steady himself to stick it in the corner, always falling away.
Just wide by Jerkoff after great skill by Drogba and a layoff by Cashley who hesitated before the layoff.
got a great link for Skysports 2 on premiumtv
What about Shakhtar - they would seem the weakest side left in the tourney? Don't fancy an away day to Eastern Europe?
the only goals have been north of the border.Aberdeen lead St. mirren 1-0 in the Scottish Cup and Queens lead Morton 1-0.
I thought Real would have scored by now.
One goal and they would be in trouble
United really struggled after an away nil niller
Great save by the keeper as Anelka was put through. Corner to Chelski.
The corner was cleared for a throw.
I didn't really think that United struggled so much yesterday. You were always in control of that match.
Real have never defeated Lyon. Will the eighth time be the charm?
Marseille had at least FIVE great chances to score... FIVE
Lyon have a decent attempt saved by Cassilas
FC Copenhagen are playing a dangerous high line. The keeper does well to gather from Drogba as he was through.
I think that the gap between commentary and pictures is down to about two seconds now, but it's still disconcerting. Like having an annoying friend in the movie theatre next to you whispering about what's behind that door.
I was concerned at the end of that match yesterday to be honest.Anelka is offside for the fifth time in this match.
Matt just told me Juan Pablo Angel went to the Galaxy!
Did you know that?
Tom is a Seattle fan and they lost to the them last night
Those Copenhagen chances have been half-chances at best but they are acquitting themselves well.
N'Daye wins a free kick for Copenhagen in a dangerous position.
Didn't hear about Angel. I expected him to form a more dynamic partnership with TH-14 but it never happened. Charlie Davies has been signed by D.C. United.
Oh - off the post!
N'Daye saw his free kick deflected on to the post and now Copenhagen have a corner punched out by Cech. Cech is fouled on the next corner.
the Danes?
I had not heard about that , UWS. I guess this will give TH-14 all the attention in New York as opposed to sharing it with Juan Pablo.
Who will TH-14 play with ?
Hey, I am asking MLS questions!
Now Queens lead Morton 2-0. I know we don't give a toss , but I want to report a goal.
I think he will play with the Red Bulls as he did after the World Cup.
Teams have a habit of getting late winners when the Special One ( sarcasm ) is in charge.
Aberdeen are beating St. Mirren in the Cup
Inverness CT 0 Celtic 0
Super Cally Go Ballistic, Celtic are atrocious
Yeah - I assume he's still with the Red Balls. I have to honestly admit that I hadn't thought about MLS and it snuck up on me. It seems a bit early. I just looked at the Revolution roster and we look rubbish again this season. They've robbed us of a marquee slot for years, trying to pretend that Taylor Twellman was an active player but there's no excuse now. We've got nowt.
Anelka wins a corner. The corner from Jerkoff is headed across the area, then Ramires commits a foul.
No, who will play with him
Jerkoff blows another chance near post. He's not exactly the player you'd want on the end of those chances.
Jerkoff should have scored after a great cut back by Anelka.
The fourth official needing to settle down the Real Bench
JERKoff does a good job falling over standing legs for penalties!
Going to ban me for five games???
2018: Over half an hour gone in both games, but no goals. As it stands, Chelsea and Real Madrid join Barcelona, Inter Milan, Man Utd, Schalke, Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham in the last eight.
The Red Balls will probably use their Ghanaian speed merchant Salou Ibrahim alongside TH. He featured in some matches last season before TH came on board.
No ten games, UWS. You accused a player of cheating. I will reduce it to four games. You accused a player, not an official.
Don't they have an American international as well.. I admit... I am ignorant
Of those left in, I'd rank them:
1. Barca
2. ManYoo
3. Real
4. Inter
5. Chelski
6. Spurs
7. Shalke
8. Shakhtar
If Bayern had won last night then they Italy would have only three teams in the CL next season. Germany would have had four teams. Tight margins!
Goal... Real take the lead.. Marcelo
BBC Sport European Football blogger Phil Minshull in the Santiago Bernabeu: "You might not be able to see this if you are watching the match on TV but there seems to be a regular verbals between Real's Karim Benzema and a few of the Lyon guys. Remember Benzema played there for five seasons. I would be surprised if the Slovenian referee (does he understand French?) isn't keeping an eye on this."
They've got Chris Albright but he plays as a defender these days now that he's getting on a bit.
They also picked up that Mexican assassin Rafael Marquez from Barca recently.
That is what I expected , UWS. Mourinho will have ten players behind the ball so that Real can win 1-0.
Of course, Lyon's job hasn't changed. They still have to score one
Well, that tie is done and dusted then. Real 2-1 up on aggregate plus the away goal.
Isn't an American forward on the Red Bulls
If Lyon score then the tie is level on aggregate and goals. Extra time?
Not a recognized American international like a Donovan or Dempsey. They've got some college kids who haven't been capped.
John Rooney is on the Red Bulls from Macclesfield
They also have a Gunnar... probably not as good Ole
What kind of cross was that from Drogs? I'm been reading "The Fix," about the influence of Chinese gambling rings on international footer so it's made me more suspicious of those kinds of plays.
Drogba crosses to nobody after a promising break. To be honest someone needed to make a run into the box.
Benza almost doubles Rea's lead...well saved
Benza nets... but called off for offside
If you watched MLS, you'd be a Red Balls fan, right UWS?
Great defending as Anelka was through.
Where is Altidore right now? Was he in NY?
The gambling rings explain a lot of things,BD.
Long range free kick now...cleared out by the Blues.
I guess.. but they mean nothing to me!
I first was drawn to DC because of their name!!
I don't mind Seattle... I like their crowd and jerseys
Carlo can't be happy with this first half. It'll be nailbiting time in the second half for no particular reason.
Aberdeen now lead St. Mirren 2-0 in the Scottish Cup.
Yeah - Jozy started at the Red Balls, but I fear that he's still on the books but doesn't play at Hull, no?
Super Cally have taken the lead against Celtic!
Wikipedia says Jozy is on loan at Bursapor. That doesn't sound good at all.
OCHO CINCO is going to try out for the MLS with KC... I hope he does and gets thumped!!
The halftime score from the Bridge is 0-0, but I don't see Copenhagen scoring twice in the second half.
US's spearhead... oh dear.. Why doesn't he just go back to the US
Half time at the Bernabau
Chelski get us going in the second half. No changes. Torres seemed a fairly content chappy on the bench.
The second half has kicked off at the Bridge. Copenhagen need to score twice to take this tie to extra time.
Celtic have tied it up at Inverness . it is now 1-1.
Oh - how did Drogs that chance - does he care at all anymore?
Drogba should have given Chelsea the lead . That was a sitter, but he shot wide.
The keeper saves comfortably from Ramires.
Why didn't Anelka hit that one with his right? He checked back twice and got dispossessed.
Oh - now Kalou hits the bar!
Anelka wins a corner after being put through, But Copenhagen defended well.
Mikkel nearly scored from a corner after Jt headed Lampard's corner. The keeper tip Mikkels header off the top of the bar.
Chelski have out shot Copenhagen 13-2 ,but have been guilty of poor finishing.
Another great ball through to Anelka but again he fails to pull the trigger? WTF?
What is Anelka's problem? He should have scored six. He took too long and was dispossessed.
XXX stuff from Drogs earns him a yellow. Could have been red.
Drogba is booked for a challenge.
Still 1-0 in Spain
Ramires drags a shot wide after a run and cross by Cashley.
Copenhagen need to score in the next five or ten minutes to have any chance.
Copenhagen break after a Lampard shot was blocked, but the cross eluded everyone.
I agree Bob. They are hanging in there.
Ramires shoots well over. Finishing is not his forte.
Anelka shoots straight at the keeper from long range.
Defender Bengtsson off and a striker Zohore coming on. Positive move.
This game in Spain is like in Manchester last night... one goal will change it all
Copenhagen as Bengtsson as replaced by 17 year old strike , Zohore.
Cech saves comfortably from N'Daye as he shot from just outside the box.
Is Lyon doing anything though?
I would love to Ronaldo get kicked out of the CL again!
He makes two straight Finals with Man U and nowt with Real.. United went further last year.. hopefully again this year... wrong decision Ronny... wrong decision
N'Doye took up a great position there but it's clear that he didn't fancy his left peg.
Same as Marseille
N'Doye shoots wide, but was pressured by Two Chelski defenders.
Yeah - but he can't find the kind of paella that he fancies in Manchester. Blood pudding just isn't a fair trade.
Another Chelski move is wasted as they passed too much and Lampard over hit everyone.
Here we go, then. El Nino about to shake off the cobwebs.
I'd have Drogs off - he's been hopeless.
Drigba wins a corner for Chelski. That looked like a foul as Invanovic headed over from the corner.
No - it's Anelka making way. I don't understand that at all.
Claudemir is booked for Copenhagen as El Nino is on for Anelka , who was not much better than Drogba.
Didn't Lyon score a late goal to knock out Real last year?
There are no second half goals to report. that is odd.
Torres with a trademark cut inside from the left.
Benza wraps it up for Real
The shot by El Nino is deflected for a corner. That could have ended up in the back of the net.
Lampard volleys well wide from the corner.
He must be pleased scoring against his old club
That must be it for Real as there is finally a second half goal. I was impatient.
Terrible ball from Torres to Jerkoff there.
Time for Copenhagen to throw caution to the wind now.
Celtic have taken the lead at Callie. They lead 1-2 in Inverness.
Both away teams have 15 minutes to score twice... not going to happen!
Cesar Santin is on for Martin Vingaard, who hobbles off injured.
Nice effort there by Torres... he still looks slow
Torres makes his trademark run and forces a decent save from the keeper.
Torres shows a burst of pace but then he's so one-footed that he decides to toe-poke with his right peg. So predictable. I cannot believe that these millionaires get away with not being able to kick a ball with both feet!
Malouda is on for Jerkoff.
I agree
Useless attempt by Copehagen!!!
Ronny being replaced
He has been replaced by Adebayor
Now N'Doye does his Anelka impersonation as he blasts terribly over when he could have passed to Santin who was in a great position.
Drogba fails to cross the ball!
Great tackle on Drogba for a corner.
JT heads over from a corner.
Can you imagine paying £100 for this rubbish?
The commentators say that the last time Real have made into the quarter was in 04
THEY'RE IN NOW
THREE NIL
N'Doye blasts well over with a speculative effort . BALL HOG!
Drogs standing over a free kick here.
WOW! I did not realize that , UWS. I knew Real was going through a lean spell, but didn't know that it had been that long.
Balanos picks up a yellow for "simulation."
The draw is on Friday
They will draw the quarters and semis
Drogba wins a corner.
Yup... first time in SEVEN years!
I have to go to Kathy's dad now... I am not going to miss anything
Take care
Talk to you on the weekend
