Euro 2012 - Day 10!
It's the end of the Group of Death - Group B - today, and the culmination should be as thrilling as yesterday's finish, if not better. Again - all four teams are mathematically still in it, and the Dutch will take a great deal of inspiration from the Greek's rise from fourth to second slot during the 90 minutes. The Germans, of course, are in pole position but they won't be complacent after watching Russia go down in flames. Join me from 2:45 pm EST to see how it all plays out.

I am noticing that the Euros is not about how you start, but how you finish. That's what make it different form the World Cup.If you look at Group A and only counted the second and third matches that the teams played then the standings would have been exactly the same. In other words, the first matches were meaningless( that's right that 4-1 win was nothing more than a friendly). Also a Portugese manager was victorious over a Dutch manager yesterday and I expect the same today. How does that pan out for Group B? Germany should defeat Denmark and Portugal should defeat Holland, so our first two quarters should be Germany vs Greece and The Czechs vs Portugal.
Morning, MUR! Happy Father's Day to you and the other LOB dads out there. I hope that Group B gives you a Sunday treat today.
Cheers BD. I hope everything went well last night. If goal difference was the tie breaker then I would have correctly predicted the top two teams in Group A. Fine margins.
It was a really lovely evening, MUR - thanks, I drove out to this beautiful spot of Lake Chautauqua called Bemus Point with my friend Jan and we had a gorgeous dinner while watching the sailboats on the lake on the nicest weather evening we've had this season. It was idyllic.
The Guardian is reminding us of what happened the last time Portugal and the Netherlands met in a major tournament - back in Deutschland 2006 - when there were 16 yellow cards and four reds for the two sides! Crikey! It's like a bad night out in Tijuana - check out the hilarious video evidence here:

Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko is a doubt to face England in Tuesday's Euro 2012 Group D match due to injury, a Ukraine football association spokesman has said.
Happy Father's Day Dave
Hope you have a good day
I did read you comments from yesterday. I made some comments at the end
ESPN2's coverage just about to start
Big news out of the Dutch camp its that van Bommell has been dropped.
Huntelaar, VDV and Viaar are in replacing vB, Afellay and Hetinga
England Women take the lead against the Dutch Women
Happy Dad's Day, UWS - did you get brekkies in bed?
The coverage on ESPN2 has started.
Huntelaar is in front the off, with RVP in a deeper role.
No team has qualified and non has been eliminated.
That's great. Everything went wonko yesterday so... no Germany and no Iberians?
Danes and Dutch go through... not even sure if that could happen!
I have to admit that I fancy the Dutch women more than the English women.
No breakie in bed but I still get treated great any day!
Germans make one enforced changed. Boateng is out replaced by Bender
Danes bring in Poulsen for the injured Remmedahl
Gunner strker, Podolski becomes youngest European player to reach 100 caps today
I'll be watching Portugal v. The Netherlands on ESPN2 The full line-ups for this one:
Portugal: Patricio; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Coentrao; Veloso, Moutinho, Meireles; Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo.
Holland: Stekelenburg; Van der Wiel, Mathijsen, Vlaar, Willems; De Jong, Sneijder; Robben, Van der Vaart, Van Persie; Huntelaar.
I'll be watching the same. I will have the iPad tuned in to the other match
That's it - I'll have the Germany v. Denmark one on the laptop - the link is here:
http://www.thefirstrow.eu/watch/127109/1/watch-denmark-vs-germany.html
The English women do beat their Dutch counterparts
"Massive win for England in their quest to reach the Euro 2013 finals - and the plaudits must go to quick-thinking winger Rachel Yankey. Yankey's cheeky 20-yard free-kick, taken while the disorganised Dutch were still trying to form their wall, was the highlight of a tight encounter at the City of Salford Stadium. The Dutch won't be happy, but Yankey ensured she got the nod from the referee before dispatching. After a nervy first-half display, England threw off the shackles after the break and know they will qualify as Group Six winners by beating both Slovenia and Croatia in their final two games."
The line-ups for Germany v. Denmark:
Denmark: Andersen; Jacobsen, Agger, Kjaer, S. Poulsen; Zimling, Kvist; Poulsen, Eriksen, Krohn-Dehli; Bendtner
Germany: Neuer; Bender, Badstuber, Hummels, Lahm; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Ozil, Podolski; Gomez
That link is the US TV... I am going to look for an English one
The Red Devil and Thomas will be delighted to see that SuperMario will be on from the start.
Let me know if you find one.
Good afternoon BD and UWS. No brekkies in bed.Bagel and laks for brekkies. Washed and vacuumed the car, getting drenched as if I went on a 10 K run, showered , and ready for action. A surf and turf meal to follow after the match.Happy Father's Day Dave and am pleased to hear that you had an excellent date. Please send some of that weather our way!
I have BBC link on and it is a bloody farming show!
The games must be on ITV
Congrats to Matt and Jon on excellent tournament performances. Great comments at the end and I guess I kind of restated them. That's why I expect Portugal and Germany to win today, but you never know.
I would have thought at least one of them would have been on BBC
I saw that Match between Portugal and Germany where the Russian ref had a mare. Sepp Blatter responded by saying that he would have booked the ref and I believe he sent the ref home the following morning along with several others. It seemed like a player got booked for practically blinking.
THe third link is with Roy Keane but clicks off to Crackle on my computer
http://myp2p.pe/index.php?sport=football
It is staying on at the moment!
Fingers crossed
Viera and Keane on the same panel!!
Without Sheva, the Ukraine are toothless in attack. Despite losing a step or ten, there still isn't anyone available to truly replace him.
Link looking good so far
Welcome, MUR!
Thanks for the link, UWS!
Is a referee or may I say bouncer required for that panel?
Ta very much, BD.
Hiya MUR
I think I will watch Portugal vs Holland on the telly and Germany vs Denmark on the computer. It's a tough decision as both matches are equally important, but I think Germany is all but through.
I have a question for you
What happens on a penalty kick if an attacking player encroaches into the box before the kick is taken?
Good afternoon, UWS. Happy Father's Day.
Try the third link from the one I just gave. It is ITV
I think it has to be retaken.
Samme to you
Glad your evening was a success BD
Ta UWS. I second that on BD's evening.
Cheers, mate. I don't know if "success' is the right word as I still came home alone, but it was fun.
That's OK
I hope we don't have a Russian ref. Just because it's Father's Day doesn't mean the ref has to give so many cards.
Roon being interviewed now.
He looks trim
I agree.Sounds like a great time was had by all.
The Dutch game has an Italian ref
Germany has a Spanish
Crawfish, mussels , crab, and steak are on the menu today. All LOBERS are welcome!
Coverage of Portugal v. NL has started on ESPN now.
BUGGER! That must be the Spanish ref that was card happy during the opening match and he's officiating a match between two physical teams.
Wow - that sounds amazing. It's a left-over stir-fry for me tonight. I'm jealous!
I think I will turn to ESPN and watch the other match on the ITV link.
It's surf and turf.Great after washing the car in the heat and humidity.
Does Keane make comments just to get a reaction
bugger....it says the other match is on this link
The Hunter, VDV , and Vlaar are in while Van Bommel and Heitinga are out. I think we've been telling Bert for about ten days now.
My oh my - Michael Bollocks is pretty smug today. That's just disgusting.
I hope the Germans lose and are knocked out... just like the Russians
I know all four teams can qualify but I have looked closely enough. Is there a way the Dutch and Germans don't qualify?
Looks like this link is the Germany Denmark link on ITV FOUR!!
No - because even if Germany lose and Portugal win, the head to head favors the Germans, so Denmark might go through top and Germany second in that scenario.
I think the Germans and Dutch both have to lose and it's down to goal difference between head to head matchups between Germany, Portugal , and Denmark. If Germany lose by a few and Portugal win by a few then that would work
A lot of pressure on Skippy - will he score tonight?
Your predictions for the results tonight, gents? I'm going Germany 2-0 and Portugal and Netherlands a scrappy 2-2 draw.
So... both of you disagree
A two goal Denmark win and Portugal win would by any margin eliminates the Dutch and Germans
I put a comment on yesterday's thread about yesterday's group. Did you answer Bob?
Did Matt pick the Czechs to win the group? He said he did and you called him NUTS
Our link is seconds behind the TV
That is, the Danes would top the group because of the head to head with Germany and Germany would go through second because of their 1-0 win against Portugal.
I just stated a scenario that would eliminate the Germans and Dutch , but I am predicting a 2-0 German win and a 2-1 Portugal victory
THAT'S MY PICK THEN!!!
All three teams would be tied on points and each would have a win and a loss in the mini league, so it would be down to goal difference in the mini league.
Infostradalive on Twitter: "#Germany‬ starts with their youngest ever line-up at European Championship: 25 years and 107 days."
Matt, Thomas and West Ham all picked Czechs for the top spot - and they were all nuts!!
Apparently NOT!!!
Lindy and Kasper are the sub keepers on the Danish bench
Respectfully, I don't think that you're right, MUR. The head to head is the first tie break followed by goal difference.
I picked the Czechs to finish second. Klose!
My TV and computer kicked off at exactly the same time
We're off from Lviv and Kharkhiv.
I think I am, BD because UEFA has that weird tiebreaker system
A bit nasty already from VDV right from the kick-off. How many cards will we see tonight? Van Bommel has been dropped as he's close to a suspension.
So, goal difference trumps the head-to-head this year? Are you sure?
Over by Mueller and Andersen is none too pleased.
Oh - the Germans are all over the Danes right from the off.
If there is a group of three tied and each beat each other, you can't take head to head... it goes to GD... but only in the games between the sides involved
It would be goal difference in the three team mini league since each team would have identical records in the mini league.Goal difference is the next tie breaker if head to head is identical as this would be the case in the mini league.
That would mean the German's two goal win would thrown out.
The Dutch on the front foot already. They're playing for pride at least.
Sliced high and wide by the Hunter as the Dutch attack from the off.
How could head-to-head be identical if Germany has already beaten two of these sides?
Big Nik heads straight to Neuer off the corner.
How did the Germans miss there!!
Superb save by Andersen from Mueller as the Germans should have had the lead.
Portugal playing on the break through Nani now.
Not the teams that would be tied
Portugal would have beaten Denmark
Denmark would have beaten Germany
Germany would have beaten Portugal
Naugty by Van Der Weil.
Skippy lining up his trademark free kick.
Deflected out for a corner.
Ronny with a free kick.. deflected over for a corner
The free kic from Skippy defl;ects off the wall for a corner.
Stekelenburg was bailed out by the ref there. Very flappy.
Foul called on the keeper... He had a right to go for it
Head tennis in the box and definite foul on Stecklenburg.
The Germans are out if they lose by an odd goal
Never a foul by Scheijder. Nani ran into Schneijder
Correct as they would be behind Portugal on goals scored, but if it's a 6-5 loss then they are through.
I reckon that a Danish win is about as likely as a German bail out of the Greek economy at this point.
If Holland win and Germany win then it's a three team mini league between Holland, Portugal, and Denmark to see who finishes second.
ONE NIL.... VDV WITH A GREAT GOAL
GOAL! VDV with a rocket!
GOAL !!! 1-0 HOLLAND AS VDV SCORES.
Greart run by Robben , who for once was unselfish and laid it off for VDV
If Holland win then are the Germans through
Currenntly Identical head to head and goal differences , but Holland has scored the fewest goals in the mini league, so they need another.
Correct, UWS.
I think that Dutch goal makes an arranged German-Danish draw even more likely.
Another game
Another goal
All games have had goals..... except this one
If Germany win... then Holland are through?
WHY IS THIS SO CONFUSING!!
I still don't get the head-to-head. As far as I can imagine, the Dutch can't eliminate either the Danish or the Germans as they lost to both of them, right?
Ronaldo hits the side netting!
Didn't hit it very well
Oh - Skippy with a big chance but he hit the outside of the post with a cheeky near post shot. Should have gone across the keeper!
OH! skippy should have done better. He found the side netting with just the keeper to beat.
Head to head is only when it is between two teams. If three teams are involved it goes to GD
So if there are three teams on 3 points each, then the head-to-head disappears? That's hardly fair.
Postiga blows another big chance.
The Dutch need a German win along with them winning by two or more goals.A draw between Germany and Denmark sends both teams through.
ANOTHER CHANCE FOR PORTUGAL... ANOTHER WEAK EFFORT..... this time by Postiga
Postiga should have scored, but Stecklenburg got a touch
Portugal are getting some chances... another poor effort. This time by Miereles
Oh - now Mereiles blows one into the side netting. The Dutch are pressing the panic button here.
Into the side netting by Mireles . It was going to be difficult to score from that angle.
PODOLSKI SCORES ON HIS 100th CAP NIGHT
GOAL! Podolski scores for the Germans!
GOAL !!! 1-0 GERMANY AND THE NEW GUNNER PUTS GERMANY IN THE LEAD.
Every game... has a goal
This is end to end stuff here. Podolski's goal gets rid of my conspiracy theories.
A great cross and run by Mueller and credit to the player who back heeled. A thundering finish in the roof of the net.
It's down to the mini league that BD loves!
As it stands now... Germany win and Portugal are second
Still don't get it - makes no sense.
Not sure about that!
The bottom three would have 3 points each. Each would have beaten each other.... I think I am right... Portugal scored three in their game
Ronny with a nice header well saved!
Oh - Skippy with a great header but Stekelenberg saved well.
The mini league is as follows:
Each team has a win and a loss and each team has a 0 goal difference. Goals scored in the mini league
Portugal 3
Denmark 3
Holland 1
Based on my understanding the tie between Denmark and Portugal is broken by Portugal's win over Denmark. Is that correct lads?
1-1 DENMARK TIE IT UP!!!!
The Indian bloke scores again
GOAL! The Danes get one back - the conspiracy is still on!
It's Krohn-Delhi with his second of the tournament - a great header.
GOAL !!! 1-1 AS DENMARK SCORE AND OLD FASHIONED GOAL OFF THE CORNER. aCORNER WAS HEADED ON BY BIG NIK AND KROHN DEHLI DEFLECTED THAT HEADER IN.
Nice move Skippy... trips over the ball
My apologies to Big Nik. It was his towering header that K-D merely nudged on.
Scrap my mini team comments. As things stand Germany and Denmark go through. No tie breakers are needed.
I thought the same thing BD until I saw the replay because my link was stuttering.
Will it be Anschluss Football from the Germans and Danes from now on in?
A powerful shot by Schneeijder is straight to Ruui Patricio.
1-1!!!
RONALDO SCORES!!
GOAL! Skippy finally scores! Good finish!
1-1!
GOAL !!! 1-1 SKIPPY SCORES PAST STECKLENBURG
Good call from the linesman... they are doing well this tourney
Great run to break the offside trap but the Dutch were playing terribly square on a high line.
What did Skippy say to the camera?
iT WAS A GREAT THROUGH BALL TO SKIPPY WHO FINALLY FINISHED .
Now a goal by Denmark and Portugal... the big guns would be out
As things stand Portugal goes through with Germany as they would beat the Danes on the head to head match
Nani with a strike... Portugal are getting so many chances!!
Nani lets one rip - the Portuguese could easily win this one. Can you imagine the Dutch losing all three?
Just wide by Nani
Correct
correct . The Dutch were square and it all started with a poor clearance by Willems.
Okay, for once, that makes sense.
Another good move by the Portuguese.... Postiga stinks it up again
he dutch have never lost all three group matches in a major tournament
Oh - nearly another German goal - they're still going for it.
Great effort by Ronny... saved
Skippy lets one rip - Stek fists away.
The Dutch defense is all over the place
a sliced by Kahdeira off the corner and a great save by Stecklenburg
Ronaldo was MILES out for that shot... he scored one like that for United in Benfica I think
How were the Dutch one of the favorites... they're pants!!
Oh - Skippy is everywhere tonight. Great header just wide!
a great effort by Skippy and Stecklenburg had no other option than to push away that shot due to the power.
Ronny heads just wide... could have had a hat-trick already!
I agree - I don't know what's been in their pickled herring at brekkies.
Skippy's best match of the tournament and I agree. The Dutch are horrible.
The Germans have a free kick in the D
Free kick for the Germans just outside the box and center... could be too close
Mueller was fouled by Kjar.
Now VDV fouls Nani justy outside the box.
Podolski whacks one just high
Dangerous free kick here for Germany.
Just over by the New Gunner
Oh - a rocket from Podolski but too high.
The Portugese free kick was just over too.
England v Ukraine is on ESPN on Tuesday
I think Portugal vs Holland is about ten seconds ahead of the other match
We need to give Ukraine a bloody good hiding on Tuesday.
EURO STATS
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the tournament with his 10th shot - the joint most shots in Euro 2012 so far. (Opta)
