Euro 2012 - Day 8!
It's the big day, lads - Group D and Engerland are back up again. And this time means business - it's a must win against the Swedes who looked toothless against Ukraine the other day. Before that, we've got France v. Ukraine to entertain us. I have no idea what to predict or want out of that one. I just want an England win. Join me for that - come on, England!
521 Comments:
The big news out of Ukraine today - as UWS reported last night - is that Woy has reviewed the tapes from Ukraine's win against Sweden from Monday and has decided to run Andy Carroll to see if he can score headers as freely as Sheva did. Let's hope it works.
I guess we would want France and Ukraine to draw.It is true that England mus twin; a result that would eliminate the Swedes!
Morning, MUR! I don't know - wins for Ukraine and England today would virtually assure places for the hosts and England, right? Ukraine would be in and wouldn't need anything from the last match with England and might be willing to settle for a draw that would knock out France. Similar to Group B, right?
In any case, here's the team selection for this afternoon's match:
Ukraine: Pyatov; Gusev, Khacheridi, Mikhalik, Selin; Yarmolenko, Tymoshchuk, Nazarenko, Konoplyanka; Shevchenko, Voronin.
France: Lloris; Debuchy, Rami, Mexès, Clichy; Cabaye, Diarra; Menez, Nasri, Ribéry; Benzema,
Referee: Björn Kuipers (NED)
Good morning,BD. If Ukraine win , France is mathematically alive, but Sweden would definitely be eliminated if they lose.
The rumors are correct. Two changes from Larry White - Evra and Malouda out and Clichy and Menez in.
I will be around for the first five minutes of the match, then will leave for an appointment. I should be back for part of the second half.
I like those changes from Larry White. Both players were okay, but inconsistent and he is sending a clear message.
Ukraine obviously has a sunnier ,warmer climate as it was in the upper 80s earlier today, but now around 80 degrees. About thirty degrees warmer than Gdansk where Ireland was thrashed by Spain.
Bit of friendly banter there between Ribery and Tymoshchuk in the tunnel. Not sure what that was all about.
It should help England to be playing a bit later in the evening. It was scorching for them on Monday.
Definitely and Kiev is farther away from the warm Black Sea , so that will help too.I guess the same would apply for Sweden.
I think I just saw lightning and it just started raining. It should be interesting.
The rain is really pelting down now - it could affect the playing surface.
The fake Scot confirmed what I just stated, but I beat him to the punch.
So who is on three goals now? Dzagoev, Gomez - anyone else?
I would not be surprised to see this end in a draw and this group be decided by margin of victories over Sweden
We're off from Donetsk.
Just those two, but Sheva will if he scores today
it is now a downpour near the Black Sea.
A bit of chaos early doors for the French. Mexes hasn't looked good in this tournament.
I agree, BD and these conditions won't help.
The weather conditions are definitely affecting the play so far.
Great through ball by Nasri , but Piatov did well to come out of his box to clear.
Wow - the referee is stopping play!!
The ref has suspended play due to the conditions and it's time for me to bugger off. See you later, BD.
That's quite extraordinary - I can't remember a match being suspended. Lots of thunder and lightening above the stadium.
See you later!
Apparently the match will not resume until at least the top of the hour. A couple of Ukrainian blokes are out on the pitch with forks.
We're back underway in Donetsk with the clock set at just under five minutes played.
Of course, England are set to kick off against Sweden in less than an hour now, so I'm assuming that these will go on simultaneously now. Not sure what the ESPN plan is for showing both - ESPN is showing the US Open golf and this one is on ESPN2. I'll be looking for a link just in case.
Ribery wins a corner for France.
A lot of times when there is an interruption in play or some other nonsense, a match ends up in a draw. I think that could be the logical result to this one.
Fifteen minutes gone now without a real chance at either end.
Oh - Menez has it in the net but he's flagged offside. Phew!
Definite warning signs there for Ukraine with Ribery allowed to run freely.
The French are starting to play a bit, a lot of it coming through Clichy down the left flank.
Despite a few warning signs, it's still 0-0 between France and Ukraine half way through this delayed first half, so that's alright then.
Oh - big chance for France there. Great ball over from Ribery and Pyatov came up big with the save.
Menez has blown a couple of big chances now. Malouda must be shaking his head on the bench.
Oh - the hero of Game 1 Sheva blows a big one there - one on one with the keeper and just blasted at him.
Ten minutes left in this first half.
Ukraine corner now - come on, Sheva!
Now a dangerous set piece chance for Nasri to swing in.
Oh - Mexes powered a header on goal and it was well saved by Pyatov!
Hello BD. I'm back and don't know what happened, but see I have not missed any goals
Now Menez picks up a yellow for a foul on Sheva - he's had a 'mare today.
It's been a better game than I'd expected given the conditions. France have had the better of the chances.
Will this delay the start of the England match or will the matches be played simultaneously?
Yes - the England match has been pushed back by 15 minutes. That is - 3pm EST/2pm CT.
A draw would be best for England , providing that they defeat Sweden.
Almost immediately after this match.
Great cross from Benzema that is cleared.
One minute of stoppage time.
Into the last minute of stoppage time now; Menez goes in really hard and should have got a second yellow there.
Clumsy by Menez and that would have been a second yellow with a Spanish ref.
Halftime and 0-0 from Donetsk.
Half-time - 0-0 - job well done, I'd say. More of the same, please.
Marco Devic is coming on for Voronin at the start of the second half.
Oh - great run by Menez again but Pyatov came up trumps once again.
Oh - great hit by Sheva! End to end stuff now.
This one could still swing either way - fascinating match!
Oh - now it's Anatoli Tymoschuk with a blast over the top.
I am back and see that Tymoschuk shot just over.
Wow. They are not showing the game here due to the storm. Damn 3rd world country.
A purple patch for Ukraine here - I'd love to see them score.
Evening, Red Devil - sorry to hear that you're not getting coverage in Italy.
So, what was the response of the Italian media to that draw with Croatia yesterday?
GOAL! Menez breaks the deadlock for France finally - that was probably coming. He'd had a number of chances!
1-0!
Are you sure England is 15 minutes late? I just want to make sure. Here, they are showing pop music videos of the 80s (Italian, so they are horrible) with no word as to when they will get re-started.
GOAL !!! 0-1 FRANCE AS MENEZ FINISHES AT THE NEAR POST AFTER A SUPERB ASSIST FROM BENZA MOI.TYMOSCHUK WAS WELL BEATEN AND PIATOV WAS BEATEN TOO EASILY AT THE NEAR POST.
Good afternoon, Red Devil. The England match has been delayed by fifteen minutes
Now then - that makes things a good deal more difficult for England. France immediately jump into the lead at the top of Group D. England must win today.
Selin is deservedly booked for a cynical trip.
Yes - that's what ESPN and the Guardian have said. That is 9pm local time/8pm GMT.
GOAL! Cabaye adds to the French lead - Ukraine are rocking!
GOAL !!! 0-2 FRANCE AS CABAYE FINISHES FROM ANOTHER BENZA MOI ASSIST . THE UKRAINIAN DEFENSE WAS SHREDDED APART AND A GREAT FINISH FROM THE TOON MIDFIELDER.
Now it's all about goal difference.
Poor defending on both goals as Ribery made Bayern teammate, Tymoschuk look like a right mug on the first goal and the central defenders were poor on the second goal.
The team news out of Lviv tonight:
England: Hart; Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole; Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young; Carroll, Welbeck.
Sweden: Isaaksson; Grandqvist, Mellberg, Jonas Olsson, Martin Olsson; Larsson, Svensson, Kallstrom, Elm; Ibrahimovic Elmander.
Referee: Damir Skomina (Slovenia).
England basically need professional performances in their next two matches.
The chubby Milevskev is on for Nazarenko.
Blokhin is rolling the dice here and he has to - Nazarenko, the holding player, is withdrawn for a striker.
Interesting - Benzema really doesn't like to make runs into the area. I wonder why?
It's as if Larry White spotted some weaknesses in the Ukrainian defense and midfield and made the adjustments at the half. Oleg just did now, but is it too little too late?
It's too easy for France , who have taken the crowd out of this match.
France take the corner short, keeping possession, now Ukraine break
Again too much space given to the French.
Oh - Cabaye rips one off the Sunday Roast!
OhH! off the post by Menez after a lengthy possession.
Devich wins a Ukrainian corner that is easily cleared.
OOPS! Was it Cabaye? The fans are whistling, but they should blame their own players for ball watching .
A Ukrainian corner that fails to beat the first man.
Oh - Iarmolenko has a go and it's deflected out for a corner.
Yarmalenko has a shot deflect for a corner.
Yann M'Villa is coming on for the goalscorer Cabaye.
Mvila is on for Cabaye.
Aliev is on for Yarmalenko.
Another Ukrainian change as well - Aliev on for Iarmolenko.
I hope Ukraine play like this against England. They have had a mare since I came back home
I hope so too. A good win for England against Sweden today and we only need a draw against Ukraine.
Nice run by Devich but his final shot was off balance.
Superb solo run by Devich by he drags the shot well wide
Ribery is fouled just outside the D.
I am home at the 71 minute mark.
Were the kick off delayed for this match.
Doesn't the England match start in 20 minutes?
Oh not far off from the free kick by Ribery and Piatov looked bloody clueless.
Just over the top from the Ribery free kick.
And now Menez has been replaced by Marvin Martin.
Marvin Martin is on for Menez.
Welcome home, UWS - yes and yes to your questions. This match was delayed by almost an hour by a torrential downpour and thunder/lightening. The England v. Sweden will start at the top of the hour.
Just saw the game was suspended!
As for the score, Matt said that if France win it would be okay. A win against Sweden would mean a draw is all England would need against Ukraine
I'd like to see Ukraine to get a goal to help England on the GD front
Good afternoon UWS. There was a 57 minute delay due to a severe thunderstorm. The England match has been delayed fifteen minutes and will kick off at 3 PM.
Correct UWS. France leads 2-0 and The Ukraine have been bloody useless in the second half.
Wow, France scored 2 within 3 minutes
Giroud on for Benzema now.
Giroud is on for Benza Moi.
Correct UWS. Ukraine fell asleep and basically left French players Unchallenged to pick them apart, basically standing around like statues.
Ukraine is lucky not be trailing by three as Cabaye had a rocket cannon off the post.
Debussy is booked for a nasty foul on Kliyenka.
Debussy is suspended for the match vs Sweden
A picture is worth 1000 words as the Ukrainian fans seemed doomed to their fate.
The home crowd is very quiet now. I'm hoping they will be in the third match as well.
Giroud with a shot that threatens the popcorn vendor , rather than Piatov.
Mexes goes into the book for a heavy challenge in the "D" there. Good chance for Ukraine now.
Mexes is booked for a clumsy foul by the D.
Go on, Sheva - have your nachos!
Aliev...well over.
Over by Aliev as a desperate fan had her fingers crossed.
I hope so too, BD. An early England goal should take the fans out of this match.
Poor cross by Ribery , but France keep possession.
France still looking for that third goal.
Well over by Mvila as it again was too easy for France.
Oleg should blast his players for a pathetic performance as a co host.the fans deserved better.
Great punch by Lloris off the free kick from Pliaenka then does well to catch under pressure.
France keeps possession , even from poor passes.
Tymoschuk is booked for a foul on Martin about a foot outside the box.
This one's over - blow up, ref!
Piatov pushes a free kick from Nasri out for a corner. He should have caught it.
I agree BD. Even the Ukrainian players have given up the fight.I feel sorry for the fans.
England's line up
Hart
Johnson
Cole
Terry
Lescott
Gerrard
Young
Milner
Parker
Carroll
Welbeck
Sweden
I01 Isaksson
03 Mellberg
04 Granqvist
05 Mn Olsson
13 Olsson
06 Elm
07 Larsson
08 Svensson
09 Kallstrom
10 Ibrahimovic
11 Elmander
Ukrainian fans are playing with their cell phones to pass the time.
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Kiev
"All the noise coming from Sweden supporters. England's minority drowned out. Long time since this happened."
Ukraine just haven't been good enough
Don't see any changes for Sweden - Carroll in for the Ox for England.
I agree. I wonder why.
No doubt the brass band has been banned again.
Long may it continue for the third match of the group
Three minutes of pointless stoppage time to come.
I agree with the Fake Scot. It has been a comfortable French win. They never seemed threatened.
Agreed.
I hope the Ukrainian fans behave themselves after the match.
Full-time - Convincingly win for Les Bleus. 2-0!
Game over
NOW
COME ON ENGURLUND!!!!!!
Why doesn't Bob Ley do the England matches?
That's it and France win 0-2 against a toothless Ukraine side without ever having to get into top gear. A professional , if not spectacular French performance.
No rest for the weary as England vs Sweden kicks off in ten minutes from Kiev.
Alexi has started his anti-England slights already - "England are going old-school." Feck off, Big Red!
Kickoff will be at 10 PM EEDT.
How is Sweden any different. I think Sweden is more old school than Engerlund. He should tuck himslef
Not happy to see Elmander in the line up... hope he sucks
I hope Zlatan gets fed up with this teammates quick and starts sulking!
England have never beaten Sweden in a competitive match!
Sweden fans outnumbering England fans 4 to 1.... the England fans must really think there is no chance!
Nice looking shot from above the stadium
We need a win - come on, you England!
Both sides with a traditional looking 4-4-2.
I am wearing my shirt again Bob!
Got my shirt and scarf on again. Come on!
Here they come.... COME ON ENGLAND COME ON ENGLAND COME ON ENGLAND
This is where England will be playing on July 1st!!!
That's unfair... why do Spain get all their games in one stadium
"Send her victorious..." La la la
All the players and manager singing GSTQ... not Rooney though
Why do England struggle against Sweden.... NOT TODAY BOYS NOT TODAY
I agree UWS. Zlatan gets frustrated after one or two hopeless passes and Elmander is very predictable. The main thing for England is to put in a solid professional performance
Nice easy win tonight, lads. I'll take 2-0.
Not today, they won't.
Come on you... two different shades of blue!!!
A couple of gigantic teams out there.
Had to rush to fix lunch. Bloody thunderstorm
Uh oh... the ref looks like a macho man
ENGERLUND, ENGERLUND, ENGERLUND!!!
Just figured out why England have one less sub.... Rooney..duh
Sweden about to get us underway - come on, England!!!!
Rooney to come back in next match, UWS?
We're off from Kiev.
I would say yes... you seem to think no
I would maybe put him behind the front two if they do well today
Kickoff at 10:01 local time . A record for a euro or World Cup match?
Bad early sign with the ref penalizing Carroll for a foul on the back.
I want some pace from England today
Carroll penalized again - a bit clumsy.
Again, I like to see England playing players in relation to who they're playing
I would be surprised if Roon doesn't starts Ukraine and he will probably be behind the front two.
What was Hart doing there???
Useless Swedish passing off the throw. More of the same please.
Englad not looking to impressive so far
Ref has blown up quite a lot to start
Nearly a good through ball there from Parker.
Great control by Welbeck, but a useless final ball from midfield.
I wish Gerrard would play for England like he does for Pool... he looks nervous to me
We haven't settled yet.
Thankfully , Sweden look even worse.
Not liking the start here for England... too slow... too deep
Get the ball in the box!!!!!
I agree - a wee bit too patient.
Poor foul by Seb Larsson on Parker and he would do best to shut it.
