Yay! It's Oscar Night - one of my favorite pop cultural moments of the year. Scoff as you like, but the awards still mean something and certainly influence film production and culture. They may not reward the kinds of small, independent movies that I prefer but - as with the Grammys - there are always one or two "wow" moments during the evening. Join me for a natter about movies and such if you're around and watching Ellen and co. tonight, won't you?
Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
181 Comments:
I'm starting the evening with a bit of the Red Carpet coverage on E-TV, muted so I can see the stars arriving but don't have to listen to the inane chatter from the likes of Ozzy Osbourne's kid.
The Red Carpet coverage on ABC starts in an hour, while the actual awards ceremony starts up at 8:30 and will wind its way through to the wee hours.
Here are my picks for the big awards tonight:
Best Picture - 12 Years a Slave: Haven't seen it yet but it seems like the momentum is behind a big win for Steve McQueen. I would have loved to have seen Richard Linklater's "Before Midnight" nominated, but alas no love for indies tonight.
Best Director - David O. Russell. Russell is on a roll these days after "The Fighter" and last year's "Silver Linings Playbook." I'd love to see Alexander Payne win for "Nebraska," but I fear he's there to make up the numbers.
Best Actor - Bruce Dern will be rewarded for a career of work - and he should be. He's fantastic in "Nebraska." McConaughey is in a mid-career resurgence and will probably pick it up soon.
Best Actress - Cate Blanchett was superb in "Blue Jasmine." Even the anti-Woody contingent won't sink her. Also loved Judi Dench in "Philomena."
Best Supporters - Lupita Nyong'o seems the favorite but I'd love to see either June Squibb (for "Nebraska") or Sally Hawkins (for "Blue Jasmine") rewarded for fine work.
Adapted Screenplay - John Ridley (for "12 Years a Slave")
I'd love to see my boy Linklater win it and Steve Coogan could give a ripping speech for "Philomena," but probably not tonight.
Best Doc - "20 Feet from Stardom."
I'm really happy that Jeremy Scahill got an invite to the Oscars tonight but his book is better than the doc. 20 Feet is a transcendent film and I hope that Darlene Love is there to shake a fist at Phil Spector.
Best Foreign Film - Hard to pick and I haven't seen any of them this year, sadly. I hear that "The Great Beauty," an Italian job is the favorite.
Best Original Song - "Let it Go" (from "Frozen")
I'm really hoping that Pharrell gets to show up in his tux and hat to collect for the impossibly catchy "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2" but apparently the tune from "Frozen" will win.
Oh - there's Pharrell now, looking all dapper but sans hat. WTF?
I'm on to the ABC Red Carpet coverage now.
MWAH!, MWAH! I'm aboard now in an ensemble of Marks & Sparks over a Piggy Wiggly t-shirt, Levis, and Clarks desert boots.
The big show is starting....
Ellen looks dressed for a Puss in Boots panto
Boom! Ellen cuts down the academy with a joke about 12 years......
Welcome, mate. I reckon that Ellen was a bit flat.
And now we're straight into the Supporting Actor category. Could slice any number of ways.
First big award of the night goes to....
Jared Leto!
Start up the orchestra!
Nice to see that the Academy producers are letting Jared talk instead of playing him off after 30 seconds.
The pacing of this one seems very relaxed. We could be in for an epic evening. Fine by me....
Speed up the teleprompter
Kung-fu Panda, and not Miyazaki?
The Hat!!! And Amy Adams floors me every time.
Yes! Pharrell found his hat!!!
Really surprised that Miyazaki didn't win it - his last bloody picture!
Worst ad or most obnoxious ad... ever, discuss. Shame on Cadillac
I like that the Invisible Woman got a costume design bid.
Missed the ad because I was in the bog. I really need a telly in the bog tonight. What was Cadillac on about?
Goodness! Lets hear it for low seats and very low cut dresses on full figured women.
I was thinking the same thing about Invisible Woman.
Say no more. No really, say no more. It's the one triumphing American Exceptionalism. Crass is just the start.
Harrison sounds half asleep.
His weary of Hollywood shtick is irksome. Phone it in from Montana or Idaho if you can't get it up for this night any more.
Good evening Bob and Gooner. I am back from tutoring. How is everyone?
I agree - where's the love and excitement for moviedom's big night?
Evening, MUR - how are you, mate?
Wow - Kim Novak!
The irksome Matty McConaghey is obnoxious as usual.
Hola El Presidente
I thought I recognized her. I haven't seen her in years.
No love for a fellow Texan, MUR?
Hola Gunner. How are you doing?
Not at all. He is idiotic and obnoxious.
Nearly recovered, thank-you. I would never have recognized Kim Novak.
I am doing well. How are you holding up Bob? Hopefully, Elizabeth gave you some helpful tips.
Are you referring to the match yesterday at the Brit?
No love for Miyazaki. Shame
Doing just fine, mate. Yes - Elizabeth has been giving me colonoscopy tips all day long. She seems quite knowledgeable.
Frozen wins best animated film. The girls said that they had picked that film to win.
I agree, Gooner.
Did you see that one with the girls, MUR?
I will let her know. She's been through three of them . Quite the veteran.
I did not, but they said everyone is talking about that film.
The ageless Sally Field is up.
Man, Sally Field looks good. She's got to be 70 easily, right? Obviously Kim Novak's plastic surgeon hasn't got near her.
I just looked him up. Miyazaki is alive so maybe he'll get another chance. Sheesh, Frozen.
I reckon that one anal probe will be enough for me, ta very much.
So why are they referring to this one as Miyazaki's last picture? Did he retire?
I think Sally Field is in her 60s , but still hot.
Maybe they should use most recent instead of last?
You are supposed to get a probe once every five years.
Visual Effects now - couldn't care less.
You missed Amy Adams shimmying with Pharrel Williams. Sally is but warm in comparison.
Gravity wins the Oscar for special effects.
It seems like something is always going on when I'm tutoring. My loss.
I did - shame about that. I'll have to catch it on YouTube.
Didn't see Gravity yet - either of you?
Cool - it's Karen O. time.
I haven't seen Gravity.
Karen's voice isn't really strong enough for this kind of thing. She's more of a screamer.
Elizabeth said it sounded like a whisper. We all seem to concur.
Which of the Best Film nominees have you seen, MUR? I've seen Nebraska, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle and Philomena.
I agree too. KO has to deliver a KO song for me to notice.
Jason Sudeikis gets invited to these now?
I've seen " I Want to Learn How to be a Decent Football Manager" starring Davie Moyes.
It must have been his skit as the Spurs manager
Helium for best short live action film.
Oh go on - give Moyesy a season or two to bed in.
I wish there was a venue to watch these shorts. They look really good. And MOYES MUST STAY!
I haven't seen any of the films you mentioned so I thought I would give humorous comment.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone sitting in the box seats at the Kodak before. How does one get those?
Lady in number 6 wins live documentary short subject
I think they have to have connections or pay a hefty admission fee.
Is that a crocodile tux jacket?
I wish Moyes would stay in bed!
I'm not sure, but it looks like an expensive tux.
Next is Bradley Cooper of wedding Crashers.
Twenty Feet From Stardom wins Best Documentary Feature.
Yes! 20 feet wins. Best win of the night so far.
Lovely - "20 Feet" wins!
And I get my Darlene Love moment. Nice!
Next is one of my favorites, Kevin Spacey.
That was a classic moment!
Best Foreign Film - haven't seen any of these, unfortunately.
The favorite wins - The Great Beauty.
I'm popping it on my Netflix list.
The winner for Best Foreign is the Great Beauty from Blighty.
I'm sorry. It's from Italia.
Nice - the director just gave a shout-out to Diego Maradona. Must be a Neapolitan.
Diego Maradona?
Ellen is now wearing a white tux and tennies.
Yeah - he dedicated his win to Diego, Fellini and a bunch of other people. Said he was an inspiration.
U2 time...
The director is a Neopolitan. That would explain the Maradonna reference.
U2 seems to be at every Oscar.
Nice acoustic performance of that tune.
I should have popped up some corn while Bono was warbling.
The girls did while I was tutoring .
Our LOB friend Bond (aka "Sporting") just Facebooked: "Never forget- Bono cares more about the world than you do. His voice is an indictment of your complacency."
LOL
Do not speak of popcorn while I'm on a lemon jello and laxative diet.
Genius
Lemon Jello??? On a scope purge? Bloody luxury.
Sorry Bob. It will be over by tomorrow morning.
Blame Elizabeth. It was her idea.
Ellen takes a selfie with Liza. I'll bet the producers told her to tone down her earlier remarks.
I must have missed Ellen's early misdemeanors.
She mentioned that the world's greatest Liza Minelli drag artist was in the audience and then the cameras caught Liza not looking terribly happy about it.
Gravity wins the Oscar for Sound Mixing.
That was rather naughty. That must have occurred when I was tutoring.
Gravity yet again. This time for sound editing. No wonder why Sandra Bullock is glowing.
Must be all that plastic surgery has left her with paper thin-skin.
Here comes the educational historian on my dissertation committee...no, it's Christophe Waltz.
Best Supporting Actress now...
Oscar goes to Lupita - I had a feeling.
Lupita Nyongo'o wins best actress?
A deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
Again - they're giving her plenty of time. Nice!
A brilliant speech. Some of these prima donnas need to take note.
I swallowed hard to avoid a sob during that speech.
Ellen is now assisting the pizza delivery man.
Oy, no wonder this thing goes on beyond midnight.
Get the hook for Ellen - she's been shocking tonight.
Good point, Gooner.
It's as if she's on the Gong Show.
The planned breaks are killing me. But the jokes were ok.
Now I see why Gooner was going gaga over Amy Adams . She does look really hot tonight. Bill Murray is nothing more than a sidekick in comparison.
Classy by Bill Murray to mention Harold Ramis and Caddyshack.
For realz
Nearly a clean sweep for Gravity as it wins the award for Cinematography.
Nearly a clean sweep for Gravity as it wins the award for Cinematography.
Yeah - lots of awards for Gravity in the technical dept.
And another for Gravity.
Another award for Gravity. This time in Film Editing.
Whoopie takes center stage.
A major fashion faux pas by the Whoopster. Really hideous.
I was in the bog again but why is Pink singing "Over the Rainbow" now?
When will Liza's horrible night end?
Pink doing an excellent job of singing " Over the Rainbow."
Hopefully sooner rather than later for Liza.
Far too many commercial breaks.
This is becoming rather farcical.
OK. Shark jumped Ellen.
"Cumberbach" - that's what my bum feels like about now.
Ellen - worst performance since Letterman?
The Great Gatsby breaks the streak as it wins the award for Production Design.
Another techie award for Gatsy.
Her performance is like your bum.
Not quite Franco, but worse than Hatheway.
Some Baaaaaaaaaaaad Kompany!
John Hodgman tweet update: I will sidestep the weird class/money issues surrounding that pizza moment and just say, that joke needed more than 3 pizzas
I agree with John.
More from John Hodgeman about the inclusion of Jayden Smith in that montage: If you were a big star, would you withhold permission to use your image unless they also included your son?
Pink, girl, you just got served, Bette-style.
Did Philamela just say, Oh Christ when Goldie Hawn started up?
I missed that Philamela comment.
I'm not a Travolta fan.
I have a rubber Elvis wig that looks a lot like Travolta's hair. Aging gracefully isn't just for chicks.
Plastic surgery has helped him tremendously.
Gravity wins the award for best Original Score.
Frozen wins the award for Best Original Song.
Not Bono won actually.
Talk about overkill. The pizza joke was old an hour ago.
Ellen poking fun at Lupita. Ellen is a hack in comparison.
Where is Bob?
John Ridley win the award for screenplay for 12 years a slave as announced by Penelope Cruz and Bobby De Niro.
Alright El Pres and BDB, I'm for bed. I'm going to try to get into work tomorrow because it's going to be havoc. Cheers and good luck tomorrow Bob. Be sure you tweet when you are finished. Har!
The Oscar for Best Screen Play goes to Spike Jonz. Booby De Niro was rolling his eyes.
Good night Gooner. Good luck Bob.
The great Sidney Poitier gets a deserved standing ovation as he walks on stage with Angelina Jolie.
Bob will be delighted that Cate Blanchette was voted best actress in a leading role.
