Round of 16… Game #3
We are now into the second day of the knockout round. Can the Europeans keep up with South Americans and get a couple of sides into the quarters? The Eastern Hemisphere is pinning its hopes on Holland and Greece moving on. While two CONCACAF sides try to keep this World Cup a Western Hemisphere party

Thanks for starting us off, mate. It's a beautiful morning in Scotia again. it is time for the Europeans to step it up and do something in this World Cup to stop the rot.
Here's the team news for the opener today:
Holland: Cillessen, Verhaegh, Kuyt, Vlaar, De Vrij, Blind, De Jong, Wijnaldum, Sneijder. Van Persie, Robben. Subs: Vorm, Krul, Martins Indi, Janmaat, De Guzman, Veltman, Kongolo, Clasie, Lens, Fer, Huntelaar, Memphis.
Mexico: Ochoa, Rodríguez, Salcido, Márquez, Herrera, Layún, Dos Santos, Moreno, Guardado, Peralta, Aguilar. Subs: Corona, Talavera, Reyes, Fabián, Jiménez, Pulido, Hernández, Ponce, Brizuela, Aquino, Peña, Vázquez.
Referee: Pedro Proença (POR)
In the Golden Boot stakes, Robben and RVP are now a couple of goals behind the new Colombian hotshot James Rodriguez.
Good morning. I am putting the morning chores on hold to join you for the action. Lots of local interest in this match.
Can RVP or Hernandez add to Vanchester United's goal total
We are tops with 8 goals and counting
RVP 3
Hernandez 1
Rooney 1
Fellani 1
Rooney 1
Mata 1
There will be mandatory water breaks today due to the heat and humidity. Still cooler in Forteleza than Harlingen today.
Great stat, UWS. It makes you wonder how we only finished seventh last season.
Did United sign a new player yesterday? I thought I saw something on FB about that
It's actually seven Vanchester United goals because you listed Roon twice. I guess he needs all the help he can get.
Morning, MUR! Great to have you on board this morning.
Interesting commentary by Bob Ley there about how the Mexican FA have apologized for Mexican fans' practice of yelling "Puta!" at opposing keepers as they're taking a goal kick.
Ta, Bob. Great to be chatting. I'm ready as per the emoticon I used on FB.
It is 8
I didn't put down Nani
That remark will need to be addressed.
Ta, UWS. I forgot about that. It would have been nice if he had scored for United this season.
A horrible record for Europe in this tournament. Only six out of thirteen teams made it past the group stage. A lower percentage than CONCACAF. Should they lose a spot next tournament, LOL.
Same could be said about Hair Bear
Absolutely.
Away we go
Two African teams in the knockout stages in the same WC tournament and three for CONCACAF. The best ever for both confederations. Should they get an extra spot? A thought.
They're off from Forteleza.
The heat index is 97. Now they know what Sparky and I go through in the morning and near dusk in the summer.
Here we go! Holland are in their brilliant orange. Mexico are in their excellent green. The Mexicans get us going. They start doing the right, left thing.
A long range effort from Layoun is over.
Blimey, that's hot - good thing they'll get a break.
The weather will also be a factor for Mexico. Many of their big cities are at altitude where it is cooler and less humid.Half the players will have the same problems as the Dutch
Yes. They are getting mandatory water breaks every thirty minutes.
UWS asks "where's the quality" as Sneijder sends a useless cross over.
Another effort from Layoun but it trickles wide.
That's why he plays in Turkey. The quality is with the Coffee Growers in the former of J Rod. UWS can't go wrong watching him
I sense that you're pulling for the local Harlingen side today. I'll all oranje.
Did you see that CONCACAF and Africa are having their best ever World Cup. CONCACAF is doing better than Europe based on percent qualifying for the knockout stages.
The two crosses against England , Ronaldo's cross against the US and Rooney's cross against Italy are the only quality crosses in this World Cup
Harlingen is a Dutch name, but I'm pulling for Mexico. They could play the Ticos in an all CONCACAF quarterfinal. That would be a first ever in the WC.
I much prefer it when Robben is playing on his true left side. Free kick with Sneijder over it.
I'm all Europe today. Hoping that UEFA don't get slots taken away from them with a poor performance. I'll be playing bazouki music this afternoon in preparation for another heroic Greek win.
Another useless cross
These commentators are plonkers
If UEFA do then it's their fault. It's their responsibility to perform.
There was a quality cross for Russia's goal against Algeria and Costa Rica's goal against Italy, but you make an excellent point
True
An odd stat. Mexico have been eliminated from the round of sixteen for the past five World Cups in a row. will the sixth time be the charm?
Vlaar showing his true Villa form there. Good chance!
A decent pass from Layoun but nobody was there to connect
Wish that Stat could be used for England!
They complain about the heat index , but it peaked at 107 here yesterday afternoon. It was a slightly cooler than it is now at Forteleza when I walked Sparky in the evening
Robben claims a handball but the Portugeezer ref waves on.
Great run down the left by Robben but lost possession because five green shirts were back, but not one orange shirt up to support him.
The Dutch are playing a lot more long ball stuff in this World Cup than I've seen in a while.
Mexico blew it there
SHOOT
Oh - first big chance there for Herrera, a whisker away.
The Dutch defense was at sixes and sevens as Hector Herrera shot just wide.
That stat for England would be wanted this WC , but normally we would expect better from them
CONCACAF is currently the second best performing confederation this World Cup. Your thoughts?
A scramble in the Dutch box. Mexico wins a corner. The corner from Dos Santos is headed away then a Mexican foul is called.
Clumsy by Vlaar , but a penalty would have been harsh.
Robben with a brilliant run before he was hacked down. Ref waves on!
Surely Robben was fouled near the D. The ref waves play on./
That's all heat related, MUR. European sides have all wilted in Manaus.
Nice pop from distance there and Cillessen is very shaky with the save. Should have caught it.
Cillessen pushes away a long range effort from Salcido. He looked shaky.
It's still a poor tournament for UEFA. You make a valid point but the bottom line is that UEFA have underperformed.
The Dutch making the Mexicans chase the ball now. Clever.
Nice ball from De Vrij to RVP but he was off balanced when he brought it down. Wide.
oH! RVP should have scored. He beat the offside trap ,controlled a long ball then sliced horribly wide.
Gio Dos Santos shoots straight at Cillessen
Gio with a half chance. I agree with UWS - Mexico have had the better chances so far.
Stat of the Day
Mexico have not scored a World Cup goal in the opening hour of a game since 2006
Their last 8 goals have been scored after the hour mark
Half an hour in and it's the cooling break.
Bloody Hell… the ref calls a TIME OUT
Clock does not start
Going to commercial!
European teams eliminated:
England, Italy, Croatia, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and Bosnia.
Russia, Spain , and Bosnia never played in Manauas . Portugal lost before they played in Manaus and won the game after. That only leaves England, Italy , and Croatia. that can use that reason, but I still feel those three just didn't do well enough to advance.
We're taking a cooling break as well, with a lovely refreshing Arnold Palmer. Cheers, UWS!
Back from the water break. Definitely much needed.
Fortunately, the AC is running. I will take a water break at the half.
They restart. Mexico with possession.
That's a fair point, mate.
Great stat, UWS. Mexico were cheated out of two first half goals against Cameroon. All of Belgium's goals goals have come past the 70 minute mark.
Actually, I was thinking to see how much it affected the teams. It is an interesting talking point.
Do you reckon that the US have a chance against the Red Devils or are Belgium just warming up.
Mexico should continue to run at Vlaar and do it often.
I think they do. Since Belgium haven't scored often The U.S. need to try and score early. I expect a really tight match.
RVP is tackled for a corner.
Robben takes it short then gets the ball back and overcooks the cross.
Cillessen blocks a shot from Dos Santos. It was a difficult angle and routine save.
Stupid by Wijnaldum on Dos Santos.
RVP and Robben haven't had as much as a sniff.
Four minutes of stoppage time, due to the mandatory water break.
Correct Bob. They have been kept in check for the most part.
If Mexico advance then NOBODY gets any PPP points today.
Oh - Robben was nearly in there. Shame.
On the replay, Robben should have got a penalty there.
A horrible defensive error by Raffa Marquez then he makes up for it with a superb tackle on Robben off a pass from RVP. Never a pen. Robben as usual, went down too easily.
Hector Moreno down. was it the contact or is it the heat?
Not a pen due to Robben's reputation? Marquez would have seen red for that.
That is true, MUR, and only about half of us guessed that the Dutch would go through.
Half-time - a 0-0 struggle for the Dutch.
It's 0-0 at the half. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the second half. The fourth match in a row for El Tri that it's been 0-0 at the half.
We're back on for the second half now.
No changes that I can see yet. Interesting. This one could well go the distance.
GOAL! Wonder strike from Gio!
I was worried that Vlaar couldn't handle Gio's pace. There it is. He latched to a loose ball ahead of Blind and launched a rocket.
GOAL 1-0 MEXICO GIO DOS SANTOS PUTS MEXICO IN THE LEAD WITH A GRETA LEFT FOOTED FINISH FROM THIRTY YARDS OUT.
There was a change at the half. Hector Moreno was injured tackling Robben in the box at the end of the half and was replaced by Diego Reyes.
Mexico running Holland ragged at this point. The Dutch are wilting in the heat of Fortaleza.
It was really poor defending by Daley Blind but take nothing away from that finish. There's the quality.
A bit better from the Dutch now. Come on, you Oranje.
Atrocious corner from Robben. He gets another bite. Equally rubbish.
Mexico have handled the conditions well. However, some of the players play in Europe and some play at a higher altitude where heat is not a factor. They are worthy of their lead , IMHO.
The heat index is 105 here. It is breezy , so you can get a nice cross breeze if you stand in the right place in the shade. How about Harlingen, TX as a World Cup venue.
Uribe now with a great shot finally well held by Cillessen.
Memphis , TN Depay on for Paul Verhagh, whomever he is.
Memphis Depay on for the defensive Verhaugh. Good move.
OH!!!!!! Great save by Ochoa from the header off the corner.
Superb reflex save by Ochoa off the corner.
Oh - that's even closer than I'd thought. De Vrij then Ochoa onto the post.
It was actually a volley by Vlaar that was pushed on to the post by Ochoa.
Was that Mexico's earliest goal in this World Cup?
Sorry it was De Vrij, not Vlaar.
Oh - now Robben flies down and feeds Sneijder. His shot is just deflected over the Mexican goal. That was going in.
OH Scheijder has a shot deflected for a corner. That could have gone anywhere. Great run and pass by Robben. Counter started by Kuuyt,
I'm surprised that goalscorer Gio is coming off. Herrera trying to protect a lead already?
Javier Aquino on for Dos Santos,. the hero as Miguel Herrera plans to sit on the lead.
I think so, Bob. It's a risky move.
How about Harlingen, TX as a World Cup venue, LOL?
Great cross by Robben, but Schneijder fails to connect.
Oh - another nice cross over from Robben that Sneijder just didn't latch on to. It's time to stick the Hunter on!
As long as you can air condition it, I've all for it, mate?
Marquez blocks from RVP for a corner. The corner from Robben is headed away then wide by Blind.
Robben goes down again and the Portugeezer again waves on. Unbelievable!!
Not on the pitch. They will have the mandatory water breaks. The heat index is currently 105. Would the players be able to handle it? It will be worse later this afternoon. It would probably be a venue for evening matches.
Finally the ref gets fed up with the Mexican fouling. Aguilar into the book.
Paul Aguilar becomes the first player booked and will miss the quarterfinal if Mexico advances.
I thought Robben went down kind of easily. His reputation is really hurting him.
Diego Reyes clears a pass from Reyes for a corner that is punched away by Ochoa.
Interesting trivia. Matt Nocito claims that Ochoa has six fingers on one hand. Not sure if that helps his goalkeeping.
BLEEDIN HECK! The heat index is now 104. This Harlingen type heat
You're right, MUR. Robben's rep as a flopper is hurting him. But he should have had at least one pen today.
It will help with those fingertip saves!
Perhaps. Other than that the Dutch have not really created much. Is the ref trying to help me in the PPP?
Get Sneijder off; put Huntelaar on!
Oh - Robben streaked into the box but then went for goal and hit Ochoa.
Ochoa blocks from Robben for a corner off a solo run about a minute before the mandatory break
Peralta coming off now and Chicha on. Good move from Herrera.
Chicha on for Oribe Peralta.
Vlaar, as with Villa , heads miles over from the corner.
What on earth! RVP is off for Huntelaar.
For some reason, the ref isn't stopping the clock for the water breaks today as they did for the US match against Germany.
I don't get that. The Hunter on for RVP. As Bob stated, they should have taken off Schneijder. I'm glad United didn't sign him.Now a water break.
Correct. He didn't stop the clock, but he did add the time on in stoppage time. It seemed to be an accurate amount of time.
Carlos Salcido skips easily past Vlaar then shoots high and wide. Another Villa moment.
I'm not sure - it was only four minutes in the first half and that only accounts from the time lost to the water break with nothing else.
Here there should be at least seven minutes added to the end - three and a half for the water break plus stoppages. We'll see what he gives.
There have been a lot of Villa moments today. Have the Dutch peaked too early?
Yes. I am thinking about seven minutes. Four minutes seems about right for the first half: Three for the water break and usually one minute gets added on, so four seems about right.
Holland are starting to play like bloody Stoke City now.
That is tough to say. I think they just haven't performed today. It's not as if they have outplayed Mexico
Oh - another heroic moment for Ochoa before the ref blows for an infringement by the Hunter.
What a save by Ochoa from the Hunter off a great cross from Robben, but definitely offside.
Not really. But Mexico have really gone into their shells in this second half. They were better in the first. It's really just been the wonder goal and nothing else.
Would that make them the Flying Dutchman if they play a lot of long ball?
True The Dutch really haven't played anywhere near their capabilities today.
GOAL! Sneijder finally comes up trumps!
GOAL!!!! 1-1 WHAT A CRACKER OF A FINISH BY SCHNEIJDER AS THE CORNER FROM ROBBEN WAS HEADED DOWN.
I honestly thought that the Hunter had missed the chance when he headed back instead of toward goal but he set Sneijder up perfectly for a rocket of a shot.
1-1
Bring on the extra time now.
The Dutch might use this to push for the winner but they don't seem to be up for it.
who headed down the corner for Scheijnder to score? was it the Hunter? I think a draw is an accurate reflection of how the match has gone. Poor Mexican marking off the corner.
A timely goal for Clockwork Orange!
OH - Memphis jinks inside and has his shot deflected. Corner opportunity.
Six minutes of stoppage time. It should be seven.
Penalty for Robben and Holland! Third time's a charm!
Very dramatic flop but still a pen.
WOW! It goes horrible wrong for El Tri. A definite trip by Raffa Marquez on Robben in the box and booked for that.
I thought this one was a pen.
The Hunter to take. Guadrado booked for stalling.
Huntelaar to take it.....
scores!!!!!!!
2-1!
Great penalty and then The Hunter celebrates by karate kicking the corner flag.
GOAL !!!! 2-1 CLOCKWORK ORANGE AS THE HUNTER BURIES IT IN THE CORNER , SENDING OCHOA THE WRONG WAY.
This looks to be the sixth consecutive World Cup that El Tri will be eliminated in the round of sixteen.
El Tri must feel as if they are facing Malcolm McDowell.
What late drama. WOW!
Oh - Aquino tries a pop from an acute angle and it's well handled by Cillessen.
It's over as the Dutch come from behind with two late goals to beat Mexico 2-1.
Full-time! The Dutch are knackered but they're through to the quarters and will face either Greece or Costa Rica. Looks like a bye to the semis to me.
Will the Dutch face another CONCACAF team in the quarters.
Probably so for the Dutch.
I'm off to have lunch then will be around for the next match.
We've just finished our lunch and are considering jumping in the pool between matches.
Well in. I would if we had one.
