Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

A Big Night of Pre-Season Football

It's two matches being played simultaneously as it's the MLS  All Stars vs the Spuds and Manchester United vs PSG being played at Soldier Field in Chicago. The All Stars vs the Spuds is on FS 1 while FOX , showing why they are third rate have chosen to show UFC wrestling instead of United VS PSG , so we will need to watch that one on a link or on tape delay. A must see.

Kickoff is in just a few minutes. It's the silly season as Miguel Herrera walked the plank yesterday for punching a reporter on Monday at the Philly Airport. So much for Rocky Balboa being the only boxer in Philly.

Also, Joe Mou has criticized Mrs. Raffa Benitez, of all people. She jokingly stated that her husband has followed Jose everywhere and cleaned up all his messes. Jose was none too pleased and stated that Raffa only immediately followed him at Inter and destroyed the best team in Europe at the time in six months. He also stated that she has too much free time and should be working on her husband's diet.

A strange coincidence as United are on the link and their opening day Prem opponents , the Spuds , are on FS 1. A good chance for me to do some scouting.

GOAL !!! ZLATAN PUTS PSG TWO UP WITH A TAP IN. HE WENT ON A SOLO RUN, PLAYED IT WIDE TO MAXWELL HOUSE DOWN THE LEFT THEN RECEIVED THE RETURN PASS AND PUNISHED UNITED AS PHIL JONES WAS CAUGHT OUT OF POSITION.

About a minute before David Villa's goal, Nick Rimnado made a great close range reflex save from Harry Kane off a nice cross from Chadli.

9:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zardes made a great run down the left and a great dummy from Clint that resulted in that pass from Kaka to Villa for the goal.

A minute of stoppage time from Soldier Field.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

PSG are two up vs United at the half and deservedly so.

Another great close reflex save by Rimando from Harry Kane. This time off a pass from Eriksen , who received a nice long diagonal pass from one of the reserves.

Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! KANE DOESN'T MISS THIS TIME AS HE CURLS A SHOT IN THE UPPER 90 FROM ABOUT 25 YARDS OUT. THE SPUDS PULL IT BACK TO 2-1.

10:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It all stemmed from a poor long back pass from Zardes that made it to Harry Kane at the opposite end of the pitch. MccArty backed off and Kane superbly picked his spot from 25 yards out.

10:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of stoppage time from Denver.

Nice last ditch tackle by Darmian on Zlatan to prevent a third PSG goal. Nice long ball to Zlatan.

I enjoyed reading about Mou's comments - good pre-season banter from The Special One.

10:24 PM

10:28 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Spuds have made four changes, bringing on some of the reserves.

10:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Very cheeky by zlatan , but his chip was cleared off the line by Blind.

10:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Smalling and Valencia are on for Shaw and and Jones , or is it Darmian?

10:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good to get an early season look at Harry Kane.

10:34 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

MLS Allstars appear to be taking the piss by wearing Spurs kits tonight.

10:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Zlatan is a cheeky bugger, isn't he?

10:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zlatan is off after putting in a good shift. He is replaced by a teenager.

10:38 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Zlatan is an enigma, but definitely a cheeky bugger

10:39 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Close call there for Spurs - Kane on the hunt.

10:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Harry Kane has looked pretty sharp and will score at OT if United play like they are tonight

10:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Do PSG look as if they'll be a threat in the CL this next season? Any new signings?

10:40 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Chadli shot wide with just the keeper to beat minutes earlier.

10:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Kamara bloke up front for MLS tonight is the sweatiest bloke I've seen in yonks. Is it really that hot in Denver tonight? He looks as if he's going to pass out.

10:41 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think PSG will make the quarters like they did last season. The only new signings are Stambouli from the Spuds and goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp from Eintacht Frankfurt.

10:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think it's on the cool side in Denver. Breezy and some people in tracksuit jackets.

10:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The fizz has gone out of the match at Soldier field due to the mass substitutions.About fifteen minutes remaining.

10:44 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Gooner is complaining on FB about the lack of DC United players on show tonight. It's a fair comment as DC are top of the pops in the East.

10:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I read your comment about the MLS kit. It's cheeky, but it looks more like an England kit.

10:45 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Definitely a good point from the Gooner, who witnessed Desmond giving Gary Cahill a bloody nose last night.

10:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cibaly should have put PSG three up, but shot off the outside of the post with just Sam Johnstone to beat.

10:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not a good showing for you lot tonight, eh? Any bright spots?

10:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My link has buggered and refreshing is not working. back on and a PSG player is down

10:49 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes. Luke Shaw had a good performance and Perreira , a young Belgian international of Brazi parents looks an exciting young player.Otherwise, little to take out of this match.

10:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'll be posting the PPP call-out this weekend. If you've got any suggestions for new categories or changing in scoring, let me know.

10:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Danny Rose makes a great last ditch tackle on Beasely off a great run and pass from Cai Camara. Rose putting his training from the LUFC Academy to good use.

10:53 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Good stuff from Danny - another one who got away.

10:54 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The main change was perhaps not awarding as many points for Premier League Champion. One wrong pick almost rules someone out of the running. I think five or six points is fair. I can take a look tomorrow and see if I have any other suggestions.

10:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

If United pull a goal back then the Red Balls win this tournament instead of PSG. what a weird format and as if LVG gives a toss.

10:57 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rabiot fouls Perreira about thirty yards out.

10:59 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sounds like the Emirates Cup.

11:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Harry Kane troops off after a useful run out.

11:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Shaq Coulthirst is on for Harry Kane. Pochettino doesn't give a toss about the match. He just wants to give the youngsters a run out.

11:00 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's the International Champions Cup, but pretty much the same idea.

11:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over as PSG defeat United 2-0 and win this tournament.

11:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That looked like a chance for the All Stars.

11:02 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Do you think Jurgen should walk the plank? we saw a hungry seagull, who would have been licking his/her chops at the prospect. There was a chipmunk , who would have been pleased to feat on some scraps.

11:05 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Whatever the name, you can bet that there will be confetti cannons.

11:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

McGee does well to push away a miss hit cross from the Spuds.

11:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm not sure. I turned off the link. I was feeling the same as LVG and Larry White.

11:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Not the best of crosses from Danny Rose. Did he practice crossing at the Reknown LUFC Academy?

11:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Any chance of a United comeback?

11:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Jozy with an atrocious miss with a header from about a yard out. How did he miss that?

11:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute if stoppage time as Jozy should have sealed the match, heading wide with a free header/

11:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The United is over. They lost 2-0.

11:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The MLS ALL Stars have defeated the Spuds 2-1.

11:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's that - an embarrassing 2-1 loss for the Spuds ahead of the new Prem season - I won't be picking them for the title, that's for sure.

11:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's a meaningless result as it was virtually a reserve/ youth Spuds side in the second half.MLS will put a different spin on it of course.

11:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm still up in the air. I'm thinking Chelski, but the Gunners cannot be counted out.

11:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I guess our next match is the Charity Shield on Sunday. I will need to set the Strawberry Alarm clock for that.

11:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Also, I will provide some feedback tomorrow. When will be the deadline to submit our predictions?

11:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

As usual, the deadline is the beginning of the season - 7 am EST on Saturday, August 8.

11:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I will probably be submitting them the evening of Wednesday August 5th because we leave for a trip to thew Big D on Thursday and won't be back till Sunday evening

11:21 PM
