Saturday Night Debate Night!
Evening, folks - it's my last night in New Orleans. I've just had perhaps the best crawfish étouffée I've ever had in my life. I could easily be on Bourbon Street around the corner having too many Hurricanes, but instead I'm holed up in my hotel room to follow tonight's Democratic Party debate. That's how important this primary election season is to me. If you're watching tonight, I hope you'll drop by for a natter.
190 Comments:
The context of tonight's debate has been completely altered by the tragic events in Paris last night. CBS News has apparently decided to radically change the nature of the debate to focus on terrorism and national security. This is likely to play to the advantage of the hawkish Hillary Clinton, who is likely to rattle sabres at ISIS all night long. I'm just hoping that Bernie Sanders doesn't take the bait and that he can provide a cogent analysis of the failure of the War on Terror policy.
Good evening. I'm joining you.
Are we. Playing a drinking game?
Evening, MUR - I'd love to join in with a drinking game but I don't have any alcohol up here in the room. Feel free to indulge though. It's great to have you on board tonight.
Okay, we're away in tonight's debate. John Dickerson first asks for a moment of silence for the victims in Paris. Then the intros.
Cheers mate. A night at the in-laws. I bought a six pack of Heinnes from the local convenience store.
A sad tragic event.. I'm interested to see how the candidates respond.
Back to Drake and Josh University.
Nice one, mate - enjoy those beers with the in-laws.
An LOB point of interest - the main moderator John Dickerson is one of West Ham Rising's friends.
John Dickerson says candidates can be attacked?
First chance for the candidates to respond to the Paris attacks. Bernie first saying the requisite things about fighting ISIS. I wish he cut against the War on Terror nonsense. Quickly on to the domestic issues. I think he'll get pressed on terrorism tonight.
The Been didn't really answer the question.
Hillary Clinton next - more sabre rattling against ISIS. She leans on the Commander in Chief role. Predictable. Of course, as Sec of State, she was responsible for the policy that produced ISIS. I hope that she gets pushed on this.
I want to hear how IS will be stopped.
I don't Bern is confident on the foreign policy terrain. This could be a torrid night for him. A bit like a slow full-back facing Cristiano Ronaldo.
O'Malley needs to be more specific.
Good - Dickerson pushes Clinton on her role in the Obama administration. She doesn't take the bait - just more bellicose rhetoric.
Nice one Bob.
I agree. Dickerson needs to push her We do need a collaborative effort.
Dickerson is doing an excellent job here - "how do we know if your future prescriptions are any good if you missed it in the past?"
Bernie needs to leap in here with some kind of analysis of backlash against imperial policy.
Hillary cannot use A sad as an excuse.
Now it's O'Malley's turn. He says that he disagrees with Hillary but doesn't really explain how. Perhaps he thinks that the US should show more leadership? Not sure.
Sorry. Asad
Agreed, mate.
Bernie makes an interesting linkage between climate change and terrorism. Good - here he goes digging into the War on Terror policy and the invasion of Iraq. He needs to do more of this.
Bern is way off by blaming climate change for terrorism.
I do agree that we had no businesses invading Iraq.
This is good stuff - he's getting a chance to hit Hillary hard on the Iraq War vote. Direct link between Iraq and the mess in the Middle East now - great!
Oh - good, Dickerson also asks Bernie if she has any disagreements with her role as Sec of State. Good - he's hitting on "Regime Change" now. This is going better than I could have hoped.
I agree with Sanders that regime change is not necessarily the solution.
Now O'Malley is piling on Hillary. More good stuff. Hillary is getting pounded harder here than she has the entire campaign. It's like Trinidad and Tobago facing Germany.
I agree too - that's been his best line so far.
Now Hillary Clinton is defending the role of Jordan - she is rotten.
Correct Bern. The Muslim countries need to do their part as well as European countries.
She sounds like a Cold War hawk - she should be in the Republican primary campaign.
Great - now Dickerson is digging into Hillary about Libya. More pounding - I'm loving it.
Hillary looks rattled and Dickerson does well to push her on Libya. Hillary needs to realize that the elected government is ineffective
Now Dickerson is wondering if the "world is too dangerous a place for a governor" to be President. A bit unfair. Governors have often been elected President.
I agree - I'll have to pass on my best through WHR.
O'Malley is clueless.
O'Malley is now demagoguing on the troops issue but he does hit Hillary again on not preparing for the day after Ghadaffi was toppled.
Great - Bernie is jumping in here on the vets issue. Another area where he can score some points.
O' Malley personalizes it by mentioning his son. Still needs to mention his philosophy.
Dickerson asks Clinton to comment on Marco Rubio's comment. She waffles and he calls her on it. Another embarrassing moment for her. She's really looking bad tonight.
The issue isn't who we're at war with, it's the metaphor of war itself. I hope that Bernie can jump in and explain that this isn't a war, it's about intel and policing.
Agreed about Bern. Agreed that we did not prepare for post Gaddafi
Hillary Duff can't do any worse.
Now Sanders is making the argument that Islamic fundamentalism is a threat to the modern world.
LOL - at least Hillary Duff can sign a tune.
We need to somehow stop IS. A coalition is the best tactic.
Great - Bernie wants major reform within the military. "The Cold War is over."
O'Malley is scoring some points on the issue of the refugee crisis. He's done some good for himself. Hillary is losing ground badly.
We can accommodate 65000 Refugees but only if we can help them be successful members of our society.
Clinton now responding on the refugee crisis - she wants to close the borders. And on the defense budget - she wants to maintain it.
Hillary is getting berned.
First break, then. Whew! That was really good for Sanders. Blow up ref!
Hillary can be Trump's running mate.
Next segment - Clinton is asked about how she will pay for her programs.
She should be, mate!
Clinton says the right things about taxiing the wealthy and closing the loopholes on corporate taxes.
She's also on strong ground attacking Big Pharma.
A question for Hillary? Why didn't wages go up under your watch?
Hillary wants to go after pharmacy companies. You had eight years
O'Malley gets a bit boring explaining his tax rate plan. But he's saying largely the right things.
Indeed, MUR - what happened there!
Well stated O'Malley. He helped raise salaries in MD and said Hillary is all talk.
Sanders on his most solid ground talking about how money has flowed to the top 1%.
Sanders is pushed on the specifics and he says that he's not quite the socialist that Eisenhower was. Good applause line.
O'Malley points out that the top rate was 70% under Reagan.
Well stated Been. Its time for Walk Street to bail us out. Great dig at Ike.
Now Clinton gets a chance to defend Obamacare. This should be solid ground for her. She's dumping on the GOP as well.
Great stat by O'Malley.
Agreed. She has a lot of explaining to do.
Great - Sanders gets some more digs in about Big Pharma. He says that Obamacare was a step forward. But he wants to go forward. Big applause line there.
Agreed with Bern about health Care. Naughty O'Malley.
Second break - Sanders still doing well. He weathered the earlier foreign policy section well and is now on the solid domestic ground that is his forte.
Hillary getting Berned.
We're back and we're on to immigration. O'Malley gets it first. He talks sense about focusing on a comprehensive plan and not just border security. Gets an easy attack in on Trump.
O'Malley favors the path to citizenship.
Hillary Clinton's turn now - she's in favor of using an executive order to pass the Dream Act.
Nice to state that immigrants need employment. How will it be implemented O'Malley?
I agree with a path to citizenship.
Sanders doesn't get the immigration question. Just as well - it's not his strongest issue. He gets to have a go on the living wage issue - much better for him.
Me too, mate.
O'Malley jumps in to talk about his record of passing a living wage bill in Maryland.
Well staatd Bern. A full time employee should not live in poverty. Apllause from the audience.
If O'Malley can't get $15 an hour in his state then how can he deal with a divided Congress.
Hillary takes on the issue. She wants a $12 minimum wage rather than a $15 minimum wage. Boo!
O'Malley jumps in to say that we shouldn't take advice from Wall Street. Hillary getting pounded. She's saved by a commercial break.
I disagree $12 an hour minimum wage, but at least its a start and a compromise.
Oh boy. Wall Street.
We're back and the topic is Wall Street. Clinton is asked how she can reform Wall Street when she gets her funding from Wall Street. Good question!
Hillary with trust me because I'll steal your money
Bernie needs to whack her on this one big time.
What does he think of Hillary's answer - "Not good enough!" Yeah!
Agreed. Excellent question.
Agreed .Not good enough.
Great stuff from Bernie about breaking up the banks and not having a Superpac.
Well stated. Break them up.
Very strong from Bernie. Very strong.
Hillary is getting berned. She's getting rattled.
Hillary is bristling now - Bernie has "impugned her integrity." She plays the gender card. And the 9/11 card. Yuck - she's disgusting.
Hillary making excuses for helping Wall Street. Poor.
Bernie is back talking about corrupt campaign financing. He shows this by example. Great stuff!
O'Malley gets his chance. He knocks Hillary as well, saying that he won't have the Wall Street team (e.g., Rubin, Summers) that Hillary would. Ouch!
O'Malley now attacking Hillary on her economic advisers.
O'Malley agrees with Bernie! He's feeling the Bern!
LOL! Weak tea. Well stated.
Hillary hits back saying that O'Malley appointed an investment banker. Poor.
Yeah - I loved the "weak tea" line. Nice one!
Now Bernie is getting in there. "Play by the rules - who are we kidding!" Great stuff!
Hillary breaking up the banks? She had eight years.
Excellent from Bern.
Now - gun control. Hillary is asked what the differences are now. She goes back to history rather than answering the question. I hope Dickerson will catch her on this.
Hillary . what did your administration do about guns the past eight years?
Ouch - Dickerson nails her on the Iraq War again!
Bernie is jumping in there to point out there is no disagreement between the candidates on the issue. O'Malley wants in here.
Agreed that background checks and eliminating loopholes are necessary.
Ouch - Martin is talking about Hillary as "Annie Oakley." Nice!
Ouch - Bernie is pointing out that Baltimore isn't that safe a city today. And he points out that his position can be a bridge building one. I agree. I think he could sit down with the students of mine who are hunters.
O'Malley claims he has regulated guns in MD. Nice by Bern to state that Baltimore is not safe.
Nice - a tweet is coming in to point out Clinton asinine assertion about 9/11 explaining her Wall Street donations.
The hunters need to be educated
Now Clinton is trying to rationale her position of deregulating Wall Street.
Poor by Hillary stating that she relied on her economic advisers.
Crummy capitalism. Nice dig by O'Malley.
I agree, mate - but I can't see any of them having a beer and a chat with either Clinton or O'Malley. With Sanders - maybe.
O'Malley might pick up a few points tonight. If the networks come out with Hillary as the victor again, we know that the fix is in.
Back to Drake and Josh University.
We're back again - Sanders is asked how he can work with conservatives. He makes the pitch for left wing populism. Good solid stuff.
Agreed. Winners don't get berned
Great response from Bern.
Now Bernie is pushed about Hillary's emails. Dangerous terrain for him. He says it's just "media stuff."
Well stated by the Bern. Get off the emails and back to the issues.
Now Hillary is forced to compliment Bernie. And she takes some easy shots at the Repubs.
What did Obama get done ,Miss Duff?
More shots at the GOP?
Good question, mate - you should be one of the panelists.
Now race relations.
That's easy terrain for Hillary. But it's problematic because the eventual President will have to deal with a Republican majority in at least one house. I trust Bernie to be able to work across the aisle with principles.
I'd love to be on the panel. Thanks mate.
O'Malley plays on his experience in Maryland. And he gets the Black Lives Matter line out.
O'Malley effective with police brutality? What about Baltimore? It's not in MD?
Baltimore contracts that.
Bernie has a chance to attack the school to prison pipeline. And to attack the broken criminal justice system. He might attack O'Malley on his Broken Windows policies in MD.
Good - he's going after the War on Drugs now.
Agreed. Too many people in jail. Agreed with Been about polici needing to be held accountable.
Duff and stuff an activist? Please.
Now It's Clinton on the Missouri case. She skirts over it quickly. She just doesn't sound convincing on any issue tonight.
Hillary grasping at straws. She's not coming up with answers.
Sanders gets a chance to talk about his free state college plan. Good solid stuff.
I agree - she's performing like this year's Chelski side tonight.
Tuition needs to decrease. The wealthy should pay tuition.
O'Malley jumps in again to explain his policy of "Debt Free College" rather than "Free College." I like Sanders' plan better.
Boom Boom. She's like an average Joe.
Now Clinton jumps in to say that she disagrees with the idea of Free College. Bad one.
Now we're on to medical care. Sanders is asked about single payer. He's the only one who supports it. He starts again with the issue of campaign finance.
Let's hope that she has to walk the same plank as Jose.
I think that O'Malley s plan is more likely to pass through Congress. Private Colleges should change reduced tuition and the wealthy should pay.
Clinton is now asked whether she still supports single payer. She doesn't - she's sticking with Obamacare.
Sanders is wagging his finger at Clinton now.
Ha har. There will be no mutiny except on Hillary's watch.
Sanders shoots back well at Clinton about the flaws in Obamacare.
O'Malley gets cut off again just before a commercial break. Sanders still doing really well. Blow up ref!
Medicare is not covering as much. I think people should have other options.
Hopefully Bernie can corner flag it until 11 o'clock now. Take no chances, mate.
The final stretch plus stoppage.
Uh oh - Hillary's talking about her time in the Situation Room.
Crisis. Wasn't Monica as much a crisis as Bin laden?
O'Malley rejects the premise of the question. That's at least honest.
LOL! Indeed, mate. Indeed.
O'Malley says there's not a crisis at state or local level. How about Baltimore?
Now Bernie's turn - corner flag it!
He's on safe ground talking about veterans' benefits so soon after Veteran's Day.
Great answer by Bern about being chairman of the veterans committee. Great stating that the GOP didn't support vets
Final statements now. Wahay!
O'Malley makes a pitch for his website and campaign.
Three candidates of stoppage time.
Next up - Clinton - she seems defensive. I don't think she had a lot of fun this evening.
Blow up ref!
Next up - Bernie - corner flag!
Hillary the Roon of politics in stoppage time. She also pitches her website.
Sanders leans again on the issues of income inequality and campaign finance reform.
Nice finish and the biggest round of applause from the crowd. Well in, Bern!
Bern also pitches the web site and talks about some issues.
Major Garret sounds rather military.
How did the candidates fare?
Good night. Have a safe trip back.
