The Premiership is Back!
Hiya, lads! We've put the tedium of the extra long international break behind us and our Premiership Saturday morning routine is back. And back with a bang. We get started in a few minutes with Watford hosting United. Then at 10 am, Jamie Vardy tries to best the Premiership scoring record by becoming the first to score in 10 consecutive matches. And we round up the day with City v. Liverpool. Let the games and the goals begin!
641 Comments:
Watford have only scored three goals at Vicarage Road this season in six games. So they’ll be banking on their resolute defence holding firm this lunchtime. United aren’t exactly slouches at the back either: they haven’t conceded a goal in 555 minutes of football. All signs point to this being a low-scoring afternoon of attrition, then, which is exactly why I'm predicting a sparkling goalfest. It’s on!
Good morning Bob. I completely agree. It would be wise to predict a 0-0 draw for the opening match.
Here are the teams coming out into the bright sunshine at Vicarage Road now:
Watford: Gomes, Nyom, Cathcart, Capoue, Britos, Anya, Watson, Jurado, Abdi, Ighalo, Deeney.
Subs: Oulare, Paredes, Ake, Guedioura, Ibarbo, Diamanti, Arlauskis.
Manchester United: De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Blind, Young, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Mata, Ander Herrera, Lingard, Depay.
Subs: Rojo, Romero, McNair, Darmian, Rashford, Andreas Pereira, Goss.
Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire).
Morning, MUR - how's your week been?
There won't be any Kung Fu Figthin' today. Other than young Perreira , United are screwed if the starters can't get it done.
It's been a really hectic week. Fortunately I have a short work week coming up and the girls are off the entire week. How about you?
Quique Flores looking rather European and dapper on the touchline now. And appropriately, "La Marseillaise" is being played before the match. Morgan Schneiderlin having a bit of a sing-song.
Now the playing of the French National Anthem.
England had a great result against the French on Tuesday
The same, mate. It's nice to have the weekend breather but also the thought that I'll only have to be in the office Monday and Tuesday next week. My mother-in-law is coming up for the holiday. Should be a good time.
Yeah - I didn't see that one but it restored some faith after the drubbing against the Spanish.
Jim Proudfoot and Clive Allen on the mics. Watford get us underway.
They're off from Vicar's Road. C
come on UNited!
There’s a fantastic atmosphere at Vicarage Road.
United with early pressure. What type of reception will Yashley get on his return to Vicar's Road.
Oh - United have a quick start. Lingard had an early chance. I didn't know until this week that he's English. I had assumed he was Scandinavian, with a name like that.
Roon ill and Kung Fu Panda out injured. Lingard and Memphis will shoulder the attacking responsibilities.
More United pressure and Nyom with a sliced clearance out for a corner that nearly went in for an OG
NYom's miss kick could have gone anywhere but it falls on the top of the net.
The corner from Herrera is headed out by Anya.
Correct mate. Lingard made his England debut on Tuesday. I think he was born and raised in the Greater Manchester area, making him a local lad.
Quique Flores sure doesn't use Tica Taka, like his compatriots. Good for him.
Decent start for United.
No - Watford are a Championship side playing away in the Premiership this season. They're strictly Route 1 merchants.
Not sure what that was from Yashley.
Watford may survive . Flores made a lot of signings. I think only three or four of the starters were part of the promotion campaign. They mix it up. They were far more direct in the past.
Will Yashley get booed where he started his career?
GOAL! United take the lead inside the only ten minutes. Memphis Depay with a controlled volley past Gomez.
1-0 United!
WAY HAY !!!! MEMPHIS GIVES UNITED THE LEAD WITH A GREAT VOLLEY. GREAT PASS FROM YASHLEY TO HERRERA , WHO PUT IN A TASTY CROSS.
Strange as this may seem., this goal was coming. United had been putting the Hornets under sustained pressure.
A second United goal , should guarantee United three points. A surprisingly attacking start from an LVG side.
OH!!! A United counter was nearly on. The pass from Lingard was just too long for Memphis, but it was the right idea.
Watford will have to come out of their shell now, for sure.
Agreed. either that or lose to United.
United are temporarily top of the pops!
The Hornets are under the cosh , as if LVG has sprayed raid on their nest.
Hey Boys,
I am here
UNITED ONE UP!!!
STUNNING!
They have started quite brightly and have tried to go forward with some pace with D3.14 and Lingard... still too much possession crap for me though
I think that will be temporary. The Foxes should win at SJP, the Gunners should do at the Baggies and Citeh should vs Pool/.
Britos clears a pass from, YAshley for a corner.
Morning, UWS - you have to be a happy chappy, eh?
Struth.... United survive a break... caused by Young trying to go backwards
PHEW! Yashley gifts the Hornets possession. Igahlalo had a great chance and sliced it wide. United let off the hook.
Watford had a two-on-two but they couldn't take advantage of it. Inhalo was hot in the early season, but he's cooled off recently. The goals have dried up for Watford.
So far so good for me and yes United are top!!
Hey, we're not 16th!
Good morning UWS. I am pleased that United are attacking. We could do a better job of that, but it's a step in the right direction.
Did you see talk of Leeds takeover by some yank
Moyes to come in
Got a good SS Link going strong... I miss all this on International weeks
Agreed. Which team is 16th , LOL? I think the Foxes , Gunners , and Citeh will win today.
Bugger... Herrera is down hurt. He doesn't seem happy
Moyes to take over at ER? I know he was sacked recently by Real Sociedad. Bob should be pleased about the take over.
LVG is forced into an early change. Ander Herrera is having to come off. Looks like a hammy. Rojo coming on.
He sure is and I think his day is over as Rojo seems set to come on. The one player , who put in a good cross is off injured.
Its definitely a muscle... I thought it was more back than hammy
Fojo on.. Blind to move up?
I agree, UWS. Will young Perreira take over that role?
I heard about that. I'd be happy to see that, especially if the Yank has some cash to splash around. Moyes might be a good fit - you know that I think that he didn't get a fair shake at OT.
Nyom fouls Memphis near the corner flag. we could have used Herrera here.
Put in a decent cross please...BLOODY HELL... USELESS
Schneiderlin volleys over after the Hornets failed to deal with a United short free kick.
I totally agree with you about Moyes.
Oh - Schneiderlin had a chance to volley home a second one after some Keystone Kops defending by the Hornets.
Bristol City take the lead against high flying Hull
I think the Championship is more of a fit for Moyes. He could be the man to take Leeds back to the Prem, but he's lacking the quality to be in charge of a top four club.
I'd certainly love to see it.
That is definitely a surprise from Ashton Gate.
We can resume our War of the Roses rivalry. That would make for some great LOB banter.
So, on Talksport Andy Townsend, a United fan, has a nightly show starting at 5 pm our time. I enjoy the listen with him and Jason Cundy (a Chelsea man)
Anyway, Andy had a question... Will a high majority of Prem fans tune in City vs Pool instead of El Classico today
I know I would tune in Swansea Bournemouth before any Spanish game
Yashley wins a corner off of Abdi.
ooh, United actually put in a dangerous corner... almost flicked in
Oh - should have been 0-2 there. Could have gone anywhere as the corner was whipped in.
My students were asking me the same question. It's Citeh vs Pool for me.
I still think Schweinnie has been disappointing for United
Troy deeney is not pleased that he was called for a foul. Those used to be fair. Was he booked for that. It may have been for excessive talking.
Deeney's in trouble here. Over the top.
I agree. I expected better from him
I reckon that he's just cover; Schneiderlin is the man for the future in that position.
United starting to give away too many chances
The Hornets start to Attack and Capoue shoots well over after a cross was headed away by Jones.
The replay shows that Deeney, of all people prevented United from going two up with that whipped in corner.
Bristol City with a surprising 1-0 lead vs the Tigers at the half. The Tigers are top of the table while Bristol City are just two points clear of the drop zone. If this result holds, the Tigers may end the day in a playoff spot.
Just to let you all know that elizabeth and I went out for Cajun for our anniversary. I had a spot of etoufee , washed down by some Blue Moon.
Decent effort by D3.14 there
Gomes pushes out s hot from Memphis. Now another ridiculous short corner that is a bloody waste,
Sounds great Dave
How many years?
Are you lot enjoying your t-shirts?
Congrats to you and Elizabeth - I saw that on FB.
Love the T-shirt... that's the only reason why I use D3.14
Cheers mate
Thanks lads. It's been 22 years.
I like mine too. Thanks.
I never had much use for "Pi" Or math, for that matter.
Sorry, lads.
Many congrats.. when is the actual anniversary?
Kathy and I are #25 on December 15
I HAVE DAMN CLASS THAT NIGHT
The ground staff at SJP has had to clear SNOW off the field today!!
We have such mild weather it has been amazing
Really ? Anything circular uses PI and we always calculate things , especially finances.
Speaking of anniversaries... can you believe it is 10 years since Georgie Best's death
This match has momentarily descended into scrappy nonsense.
That's a fantastic achievement . Are you giving a final that night?
I'm with you, UWS. We were buried in snow this time last year. May it continue!
Nyom wins the Hornets first cornmer.
Bournemouth have their first corner as we go into stoppage time..cleared
United can break... TOO SLOW
Jones heads away the corner from Watsin. Now United break.
It doesn't seem like ten years
Mild here too We've had almost two months of Indian summer.
It's been a doddle! Just like crucifixion!!
Final is that night or the 17th
Peep peep! That's half-time, lads. United haven't conceded in yonks and they're 0-1 up. Looking good for you lot.
United are one up at the half, but have been poor after a great start,
HT... not bad but still not up to my standards
The 17th is my birthday. Perhaps you and Kathy can celebrate the Silver Anniversary on the 16th.
We'll try to celebrate somehow
Of course, we have already been to Hawaii!!
Hate all this fluidity crap talk by the NBC bloke
I'm sure you will. That sounds like it was a vacation of a lifetime.
The second half is underway from Vicar's Road.
ATTACK UNITED! ATTACK!
Nathan Ake, on loan from Chelsea, is on for Jurado at left back.
United could have scored again... bugger!!
Another short corner... sigh
OH! Lingard should have United two up , but with just Gopmes to beat , his shot was pushed away. Great pass from D Pi
Craig Cathcart , a former United trainee, with a slide tackle for another United corner, and another useless short one.
United need to get another goal!!!
Useless long range effort from the Pig Stick really stunk
It's sunny, but looking chilly in Blighty. We're supposed to get out first chilly weather of the season this afternoon.
Come on Man U
Come on Man U
Come on Man U
United are seven goals behind City... they were even a month ago
ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK!
Hazard has not scored for 21 football matches according to Merson
I'm back with my brekkies now - United still in charge.
BLOODY USELESS free kick routine then a shot from D Pi was about that distance from the corner flag.
Sounds about right. Chelsea's form has been a real Hazard.
Yashley wins a corner off of Ake , off of the corner flag.
Pig Stick heads wide at the near post from a corner by Mata.
De Gea tips over a long range effort from Deeney . His first save of the match
As you know, I listen to 5Live or Talksport and everyone is saying the title is a two horse race with City and Arse with United behind
I said this during the last round of matches....
Why aren't Spurs being considered as Champions
Haven't lost since undeservedly going down at OT on the opening day of the season
Should have won at the Em
Crushed City at the Lane
The corner from Watson is headed away bu the first man.
De Gea with a decent save... not liking this
United should be up by more than one
The Spuds are definitely a dark horse team this season. They must be considered.
Leeds to get a win at home to Rotherham today?
A foul throw by Nyom.
United seem to be urging Watford on to them - I know this is what drives you crazy about the LVG United. Why not finish them off?
Anya wins a corner off of Rojo.
I can see United sitting back too deep
Concede once and then again
Just like the Swansea game when I was in San Diego
United struggle to clear the corner and Capoue could have tied it up had he made a decent contact
Agreed about Leeds as new manager Mike Evans faces hos former club. If Leeds can't beat these mugs then who can they beat?
Applause from the home support as Capoue nutmegs former fan favorite, Yashley
Yep - Rotherham are rooted on the bottom, so it's three points or bust for us now.
SS going around the grounds
They are calling Newcastle's ground... St James' Park... it back to its normal name instead of the stupid made up name
Glad to hear
Off for my walk after this match
I'll be able to listen to a match on Talksport not sure which one
My guess is Chelsea Norwich
Agreed. I don;t like the evil corporate names.
I know the Baggies vs Gunners is on USA.
Schweiny is the most negative of all of them!
A second goal at Ashton Gate... to the visitors
BC 1 Hull 1
About time they went back to SJP.
The Tigers tie it up at Ashton Gate .
I want to watch Newcastle v. Leicester. Vardy is up for the record and they're always entertaining.
Now watch Chelski v. Norwich be a 8-5 thriller.
United break with D3.14 and Mata... toooooooo SLOOOOWWW
D Pi shoots well wide on the break that started with Lingard picking Anya's pocket.
Ben Watson booked for a foul on Yashley.
Agreed, mate - they've come out of the dressing room looking to bore us in this second half. I had no idea that LVG was a catenaccio guy.
Now Jones is down injured. He's back up.
Great positive move by LVG... bring on McNair!
Paredes, the Colombian, is on for Nyom and Paddy McNair is on for Jones.
I think it's like for like as mCnair will play in the position Jones was. Agreed that it's nopt an attacking option, but then it wouldn't be an LVG team
Oh - great save by Twilight there. He's keeping United in the lead.
United fail to clear and De Gea does well to turn around a deflected effort from Abdi.
Were you all aware that there was match in the Championship yesterday? Middlesborugh defeated QPR 1-0 thanks to a penalty deep in stoppage time.
Struth.. Watford almost tie it up!!
Useless defending by United
Great save by De Gea... I don't like all this talk about United's great defense and haven't concede.... yes but it is because of De Gea. The defense has given away lots of chances
Berahino missed a sitter for West Brom
That one there and plenty more times it is complete luck that no goal was scored
Young has been a real disappointment for United
I thought he would be a good signing and he looked like he would with performances that he gave in the 8-2er
Bob always said he was going to be a bust
Speaking of Young... in the book
Yashley is booked for fouling Paredes on the break.
15 minutes for another bloody 1 niller
Another chance for Watford... straight at DeGea...phew
well stated with both comments. The Gooner was kind enough to remind that Yashley wins lots of dodgy free kicks.
Oh - Deeney had a great chance but drove it into Twilight's midriff. United are riding their luck here.
I Believe in Miracles is available on DVD already
Surely its on line already
Deeney turned a defender and shot straight at De Gea.
That's classic, but it sounds like a dig at LVG, LOL! Takes me back to my childhood.
Funny - I didn't think he was good enough for United. Then he had a rip-roaring start for United and played well for England that fall. Never again, though. Nostrabobus speaks!
Di Pi took too long too shoot after a long ball from Lingard was back headed by Anya.
Perreira, the young Brazi-Belgian, is on for Mata.
You are the mater predicter, Nostrabobus!
Have you got any subs to bring on?
Mata is being replaced
LVG seems to always do that.. what's the point
I am not too impressed with Mata's displays... others go gaga over him
LVG with some teenagers on the bench. IS he sending a message?
Young is down.. hope it is something that will bring him off
LVG has already used all of his weak bench
Yashley is down injurd with no subs remaining.
Will Vardy tie Ruud VNR with scoring in 10 straight matches in the Prem?
RVNR scored in his ten over a span of two seasons.. Vardy already has record for single season
Into last ten minutes... NOT BLOODY GOOD ENOUGH
I don't care if we go top
I don't care that we kept a clean sheet
NOT BLOODY GOOD ENOUGH... or I just am a boring old fart and miss the game of the past
Another missed sitter by Lingard as he shoots straight at Gomes , after being played through
Lingard should have had a brace in the second half there
Vardy could . The Foxes are away to the helpless Toon, so it could very well happen.
Luke would have netted both of those chances Jessie
RUDDY NORAH... penalty to the Hornets
Bloody hell - United have given away a penalty!
Stupid by Rojo
I think it was a pen
DAMN IT! THE HORNETS HAVE WON A PENALTY. CLUMSY BY ROJO ON IGALHO.
I'd have to give it to the ref - a definite hack from Rojo.
Again... United deserve this
1-1
BUGGER ! DEENEY TIES IT UP FROM THE SPOT.
Deeney to take.....
Twilight goes the right way, but can't stop the pen.
1-1
It's 1-1 here and it finishes 1-1 at Ashton Gate between Bristol City and Hull City.
SS say it was a soft pen
Burnley host the Seagulls tomorrow morning and if there is winner, that team will go top.
Will United push for the winner?
Perhaps soft, but definitely clumsy.
GO FORWARD!!!!!!!!!!
SHOW SOME URGENCY!!!!!!
Rojo should be red faced with embarrassment.
Gomes saves from flick by Smalling
Great save by Gomes from a Smalling volley off the corner.
