Day 9 - Group E: Belgium v. Republic of Ireland
Happy Saturday morning, lads. We've reached Day 9 of Euro 2016. I'll be celebrating my 1st anniversary today in Rochester, so I'm only around for the early one today - Belgium v. the Republic. Belgium got punked by a cynical Italian side in the opener. Can they bounce back or will they be frustrated by an industrious Irish side.

Good Morning everyone
I will be here for the first game!
I have been a disappointing no show for the Euros so far
The first weekend I was with Bob and let him do the typing
During the week, I had work and lots of stuff after school
I am here for the early one which is the only appealing one of the day.
One more week of school so I will be much better participant in the weeks to come
COME ON IRELAND!!
Apparently Courtois and his manager had a little fisty-cuffs earlier in the week
I would love to see Ireland win this... all four British Isles teams to make the final 16!
25% of the teams left would be brilliant!!
What is the lady that is behind the music introducing the matches... sounds foreign but not French.
Sounds like a damn computer voice
I am looking thru the groups and I am trying to figure out the third place riddle
First, the UEFA tie breaker is head to head... that is why Ukraine is out because the lost to Ireland... but how will they decided between groups
England have 4 points but they aren't safe. Before the tourney, people were saying three could qualify you... very confused
Hair Bear is dropped for the Belgians
Steve McM just said half the teams speak Dutch, half the team speak French but not many speak both!
How about the Croatian fans?
What morons!!! Your team is coasting... and then the trouble... and drop two points!
Will Hazard score today?
He's played 458 minutes without a major finals goal!!
Sounds Rooney-like at the WC
The line ups
Belgium XI: Courtois, Meunier, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Witsel, Dembele, De Bruyne, Hazard, Carrasco, R. Lukaku
Republic of Ireland XI: Randolph, Coleman, O'Shea, Clark, Ward, Hendrick, Whelan, McCarthy, Hoolahan, Brady, Long
What was everyone doing a year ago today?
I know Kathy and I were already many miles away from Scotia heading down to a certain wedding
Teams in the tunnel
COME ON YOU GREEN!!
If the Irish could get something today, Matt The Saint could be a genius picking the Belgian manager for the axe
Here they come
Don't recognize the Irish anthem at all!
Strange that Wales have their anthem, Scotland have their anthem but Northern Ireland have God Save the Queen
Is my Golden Boot pick Lukaku going to score 4 today and put me top!!
We are off
The Irish are on the back foot in the first five minutes
Belgium haven't created much but...
On to these shores, USA have made the Semi Final of the Copa America with a 2-1 win over Ecuador. Some bad blood in that one with United's Valencia getting a red card for two yellow, an American with a straight red and other banned for semi against probably Argentina
Also, in the US Open Cup... NYFC lost to NY Cosmos!!!
Morning, mate - great to have you on board. We're just back from the hotel brekkies and I'm settling in to watch this one. I agree with you - it's been a stinker of a tournament. I might even be in favor of some drastic UEFA action in order to force these guys to play in the future.
It just stuns me how bad crossing has become in the modern day. First, teams don't want winners. They just want to pass the ball to death not going any where. If the ball goes wide, the cross 90% of the time gets blocked!! Stuns me!
They are professionals!!
Morning Bob. Hope you're having a good time
Here are the team line-ups by the way:
Belgium: Courtois; Meunier, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Vertonghen; Dembélé, Witsel; De Bruyne, Carrasco, Hazard; Lukaku
Subs: Nainggolan, Fellaini, Mignolet, Gillet, Mertens, Denayer, Origi, Benteke, Kabasele, J Lukaku, Batshuayi, Ciman
Ireland: Randolph; Coleman, Clark, O’Shea, Ward; Hendrick, Whelan, McCarthy, Brady; Hoolahan; Long
Subs: Westwood, Keogh, McGeady, Keane, McClean, Duffy, Walters, Christie, Given, Meyler, Murphy, Quinn
Referee: Cüneyt Çakır (TUR)
I didn't say it was a stinker of a tournament.
I said I was a disappointment!
Of course, it hasn't been brilliant even though only one nil niller as of yet
Already posted them buddy!!(8:39) Get with the program
Meunier, Vermaelen, Dembele and Carrasco come in for this one. I'm surprised to see Courtois - he's apparently been having a ruck with Wilmots all week.
Flashing header from a corner is the first real close shave for the Irish
BTW, your seat looks very empty at Sandalwood
Sorry - I read it too quickly. You're never a disappointment, mate. I had a great time with you lot last weekend.
I do fill up a seat with my bulk, eh?
Doesn't look like anything is clicking for the Belgians yet. Ireland with a rearguard action.
Actually, no one is in the room right now... what a difference from the full house when you were here!
Had a great time too
De Bruyne slings in a free kick but no one gets on the end of it and it bounces safely behind.
Second time the ball flashes across the box with no one to knock it in
Will you be able to see the England match on Monday?
Kate is being a cheerleader for the Republic this morning, wearing a green t-shirt. Very cute, if I do say so.
Ireland finally get the ball in the box. Win back to back corners... of course they come to nothing
Useless corner from the Ginger Winger. He was pants against Italy as well.
I hope to rush out of school on Monday to get here for kick off. I might be a few minutes late but i'll be there.... WITHOUT MY ENGLAND SHIRT ON!
Oh - Hazard blazes over the top when he had the whole goal to aim at.
That minute count is growing for Hazard... blazes over the bar
I'll respect that choice. What were you wearing during the Wales match?
Oh - Shane Long had a chance there but he ran into trouble.
Time for a goal... off to the loo
Belgium have it in the net but it's ruled offside.
Wilmots doesn't look a happy chappy.
I thought that Tommy Smyth had been retired - crikey!
The Ginger pulls the trigger but it's easily saved by Randolph.
I am back
It didn't work!
Ireland have weathered the Belgian storm for half an hour here. If they pick up another draw, they might just be able to qualify with a third draw against Italy on Wednesday.
It nearly did. Randolph saved one from Hazard onto the bar and then the rebound was ruled offside.
A chorus of “Stand up for the Boys in Green” reverberates around the stadium as Ireland stroke the ball about with encouraging poise.
You say that about getting 3 points. Not sure if that is enough. England don't have enough yet. A loss and they would finish third and there a lot of teams on three right now
Even for a best third place finish?
I did like the look of Martens when he came on against Italy. I'm surprised he wasn't used today. Two defensive middies is too cautious for them.
Too much passing and not enough penetration... sigh
Robbie Brady "singing in a different key" after that block, according to Tommy. LOL!
I agree. Belgium have so many weapons, why not unleash them against a group of plodders like the Republic?
Right now,
Group A
Romania can get 4
Albania can get 3
Group B
Slovakia 6
Russia 4
Group C
NI 6
Ukraine 3
Group D
Czech 4
Turkey 3
Group E
too early
Group F
too early
Belgium spends a couple of minutes hogging the ball. But they circulate it too slowly to dislodge the Irish defence, whose concentration level has been high so far. For a team ranked by Fifa as the second-best in the world, Belgium have been rather mundane so far.
Thats half... not good
Half-time - as in so many of these matches, it's 0-0. The ESPN crew have had to come up with ever more inventive ways to describe a 0-0 draw and to hope to entice viewers to stick around for more rubbish.
Off for walkies
GOAL! I'm just back from the shower in time to see The Chunk slot Belgium's and his first goal of the tournament.
1-0!
Belgium predictably drop deep to protect their slim 1-0 lead. Glen Whelan wins a corner.
GOAL! Witsel seals the match for Belgium with a powerful header past Randolph. Great ball in for Meunier.
2-0 Belgiums.
Holy Crap... Shadow was a in a walking mood this morning and I missed TWO GOALS!
The talented Napoli winger Dries Martens comes on to replace Carrasco.
Hard to see Ireland getting back into this one now.
Is that the Shadow Curse now?
Gotta open the pool soon... unlike last weekend... very swimmable weather this weekend
Good goals from Belgium - especially the second one. The first one was marred by a possible free kick for Ireland. The ref waved on and Belgium ran it back up the pitch.
Loo or Shad... take your pick
Useless cross by the Irish...sigh
THAT'S TWO FOR MY GB pick!!
GOAL! Lukaku has a brace!!!!!
Easy peasy. Lukaku now on par with the other Golden Boot candidates on two goals.
Belgium finally showing their real quality.
The Irish trying to manfully play of here despite being three down with fifteen minutes left.
A couple of people also picked Spain's Alvaro Morata who scored a brace yesterday.
Robbie Keane comes on for a late, late cameo - Long comes off.
I need another Chunk goal
Is Benteke in the squad... what a fall from a perch after leaving for Anfield
This one is all done and dusted
I am off to do some pool and yard work
Have a great anniversary weekend
