Round of 16 Belgium vs Hungary

After the borefest and considering not watching any more Euro matches due to the excessive boredom, , we have been rewarded with some exciting matches. We just watched the Germans make a statement with the most dominant performance of the tournament as they thrashed Slovakia. Can the Belgians fulfill the promise that many have as a dark horse to win it all or will the Magyars, who are in their first major tournament in thirty years continue to surprise us. Join me to discover what transpires.

Here we go for the final Euro match of the day... of course there is still the Copa America Final later on

Hope it is good game to end the triple header.. at least there has already been 6 goals today

Will the Magyars be Hungary for some Belgian waffles or will they find the Belgians a real Hazard?

My GB has an effort... I thought that was in.... saved

3:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH!!! The Chunk has a close range effort blocked by Kiraly for a corner off a pass from De Bruyne. The corner is cleared

3:07 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I bet this is the kiss of death but I think the officiating of the entire tournament has been really good

The Ginger Winger tries pop but Kiraly hangs on. Isn't it too hot for sweats?

3:08 PM

De Bruyne has a long range effort saved by Kiraly.

It is , but he always wears sweats and says that it's more comfortable than wearing shorts. I guess he knows best

Max points out that this is probably the greatest mismatch in terms of the monetary worth of the players on show.

Either he or Lukaku could have scored from a free header.

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Spurs man's head and not mine!

3:11 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I disagree with Max . There have been far greater mismatches in other tournaments. How about Germany vs Northern Ireland? Those L1 players sure cost a lot less than the superstar WC winners

3:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

This is why I would prefer to meet France in the quarters and not Belgium - I think that they could easily be dark horses.

3:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

During the intermission of the matches, I was watching some of the 1966 WC. England v Argentina when Ratin got sent off... they argued for over EIGHT minutes! I also watched the Semi Final with Portugal
During the Argie match, England didn't score until late on
Walter Winterbottom said something I hadn't heard before several times

He said England had made the 1/8 Finals

3:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No chance for Captain Sweatpants .

3:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Belgians might actually be worth more than the Germans, I suspect - crazy money, but that's their current worth.

3:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Classic matches . Better than what we have experienced this tournament.

3:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think you may be right.I guess for England it's a matter of picking their poison. Tough no matter whom they face .

3:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - De Bruyne was off to the races there from the Chunk pass. Kiraly saves. Hungary really can't make this a foot race.

3:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Chunk puts through De Bruyne , who forces a kick save from Captain Sweat Pants. The Belgians should have gone two up

3:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What happened to Courtois there.

3:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A horrible slip from Courtois gifts Hungary a corner.

This game has a wide open feel to it - I like it!

3:18 PM

Me too. I'm delighted and relieved that the matches are so much better today. It may be that one bracket has crap matchups and the crap needs to be gradually eliminated.

3:25 PM

Belgium will practically be the home team vs Wales since the match is being played in Lille , which is near the Belgian border. They should have plenty of support in that match.

3:27 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Hazard is offside of f a through ball from the Chunk . It all started with a routine throw deep in the Belgian half.

3:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hazard broke through but then chose the wrong option.

3:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Belgium do take the ball into space ahead!!

WITH PACE!!!

3:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Ginger Winger leapt to nod toward goal - Kiraly grabs.

3:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

De Bruyne heads straight to Captain Sweatpants off a chipped pass from the Chunk. A great break led by Hazard.

3:30 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Magyars seem ton have run out of ideas. Their two danger men only have about five touches of the ball.

3:31 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - that's poor from The Chunk. He breaks into a wide area but then completely shanks his shot.

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

A lot of the Belgian team are doing a lot of complaining with their teammates choices

3:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Chunk slices a shot horribly wide off a one two with De Bruyne. Every time the Magyars cough up the ball they seem to be caught on the break.

3:32 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The Magyars not so magical today. Rather pedestrian.

3:33 PM

Oh - great save on the replay from Captain Sweatpants!

3:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH!!!! Sweat pants tips a free kick from De Bruyne on top the bar then the Chunk heads the rebound over.

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Waffles starting line up has combined for 698 Premier League appearances

3:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Vertonghen is basically playing as an inside left now - extraordinary!

3:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

To be honest some of the Magyars would be more likely o end up at ER. I think Kleinheisler and Dzsdszak would be great additions to the LUFC side and would probably be affordable signings.

3:37 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

On this form, the Waffles will look forward to a quarter final match against the Leek Eaters.

3:38 PM

3:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Great stat, UWS.The only Magyar to have played in the Prem is Captain Sweatpants for one season with Palace. They have a fair number of appearances in the Championship , which illustrates the difference in talent between the two teams

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I said Wimpleton because some US newscasters say that!!

I know Letterman went on a rant telling people it has a B and a D!!!

oooh, just over the bar by Hungary

3:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just over by Lovernsics off a run and pass by Zoltan Gera.

3:40 PM

Hello Gents,

I must say that I was fearing this. I think Belgium is one of the most physically robust teams in the tournament. They could bully around the Germans. Hungary is old-school. Many of their players are so un-hunky that they could be back from 1986. In other words, a bunch of guys with the physique of Matt LeTisier.

3:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Half time in 45 minutes... that's refreshing

3:46 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Belgians are one up at the half , but should have sewn up this match. Will they rue the missed chances?

3:46 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Half-time - Hungary aren't quite out of this one as Belgium haven't taken all of their chances, but really the Wafflers should have too much quality for them in the second half.

3:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am quite sure that the worth of the Belgian first team exceeds that of the Germans.

Hungary is probably as low-wage as N. Ireland. N. Ireland may have less players in the 1st league, but the Magyars probably have fellas playing in leagues that pay less than the Championship.

3:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

However, I would think that Albania might even be lower wage than the others, while the French were pretty high-wage. That game may have been the biggest wage discrepancy.

3:49 PM

4:02 PM

Ok. Come on Hungary! At least give us a game. I cannot hide my dislike for the Belgians (ooooh, great play from Hazard). I find them a bit thuggish and mercenary, not like the Belgians of 1986 who won my hearts back then.

4:02 PM

It's interesting to see guys on the Austrian team who are clearly Hungs, and likewise guys on the Hungarian teams who are still more Germany. The Hungarian captain looks like your classic German/Austrian mail-carrier/dog-catcher.

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good points , Red Devil . That 1986 team to watch. This one could be if the tactics were different.

4:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nice analogies. A similar situation occurred with Switzerland and Albania.

4:06 PM

oooooooh! come on Hungary! Blind angle shot, but at least I liked the attacking move.

4:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Szalai shoots high and wide off a pass from Dzsdzsak.

4:07 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Welcome back, Red Devil. I'm quite fond of the Belgians, probably because so many of them play in England so that they have a very direct Premiership style to them. De Bruyne reminds of so many Premiership wingers over the years - Andrei Kanchelskis, for example.

4:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

You make some great comparisons with the transfer fees. I wonder how the disparity compares to previous tournaments

4:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

MUR - that Switzerland-Albania match was fratricide. The high number of Albanians on each side led to the most mean-spirited match of the tourney (although Romania-Albania came close). See the uniting thread between those matches?

4:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I like the Belgians for the same reason, but agree with Red Devil that they could be so much more entertaining if Marc Wilmots altered the tactics.

4:09 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dzsdudzsak has a cross headed out for a corner.

4:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

so close by Hungary... Decent cross.. hmmmmm... maybe that's a good idea

4:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The difference between this side and the 1986 Waffles is that this side might actually win something, unlike the Enzo Scifo led side. After this one, they might start dreaming of a smooth ride to the final, given the way that the brackets have lined up. And whoever they meet up with will have had to slog their way through at least two, if not three difficult knock-out matches.

4:10 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alright. Hungary is starting to play a bit. The downside is that this greater openness will burn them when De Bruyne, Mertens, and Hazard punk them with a quick counter.

4:11 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The game is starting to open up, much like the most entertaining game of the tourney so far: Hungary-Portugal.

4:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed about Belgium. They can win it all, but only if they play as a team and not a bunch of Hollywood celebrities.

4:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

how did they miss that? great flick by Lukaku

4:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's been quite an entertaining, open match from the off. I did love that Hungary-Portugal match as well. I only wish it had ended in Ronaldo tears.

4:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I see your point, Red Devil. I'm sure there was not brotherly love among the Xakha Khan brothers

4:15 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Teams are attacking at pace when given room to run into... take the space!!

COME ON ENGLAND!!

DO THE SAME

4:16 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm delighted so see this match opening up. I hope this is trend for the remainder of the tournament.

4:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Our friend Birger must be tearing his hair out over this one, Red Devil. The Belgians should have killed this one off half an hour ago.

4:17 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's also a bit tough to support the Huns since they are turning into such a bunch of fascists. That said, about the Belgians (Flam-bloc) is about the same.

4:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Elek booked for tripping Hazard. Will it be a Hazard for the Magyars?

4:17 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Nanngolan slices a shot horribly wide. Is the porcupine look or the shot worse?

4:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

England will no doubt attack with pace against Iceland. The only question I've got is whether the strikers will have their shooting boots on tomorrow. In tournaments when England have done well, they've always had a striker who scored most of the goals (e.g. Lineker in 1990; Shearer in 96). Harry Kane needs to get it right tomorrow.

4:19 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed, Blue Devil. 21 chances!!! That's two tournaments worth for the Italians.

4:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Perhaps the former EU Welsh side can pull off an upset against the winners of this match.

4:19 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Woy will have to unshackle the players and quit employing such conservative tactics or else they will not thrash the Thor and Co.

4:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm afraid that post-Brexit, we'll see a wave of that kind of loathsome behavior across Europe - and perhaps in the US? (sigh)

4:21 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This game is starting to look like the Copa games that the US played - acres of space in the midfield. Very different from the incredibly tight midfield we witnessed last night in the Portugal-Croatia match.

4:21 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Will Chris Coleman fancy his chances against either team?

4:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

My main doubt about the Belgians is that they don't have the killer instinct needed to progress through the rounds.

4:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - great tip over by Courtois from a deflected shot. What on earth was Toby doing there? He looked like he was auditioning for "Swan Lake!"

4:22 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Courtois does well to tip over a deflected effort from Pinter.

4:22 PM

Well at least they are giving us a good 2nd half of football. A step up from yesterday (and the rest of the damn tourney).

4:23 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I sure hope not. I also thought the E in EU stood for exit.

4:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Okay - Max is running out of relevant stats. He's just mentioned that Courtois and Kiraly have the largest age difference between two goalkeepers in the tournament.

I find hard to believe that Red Devil dislikes the Belgians more than Max Bretos.

4:25 PM

I don't think Wales have much of a chance. I think the English really exposed their limitations. They have had the benefit of facing some weak, unmotivated opponents, who could not match their fire or pragmatism.

4:27 PM

4:31 PM

4:31 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Do you think that the poor quality of the crossing in this tournament might have to do with the overly light balls that they're using these days, UWS? I don't get it otherwise.

4:35 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Dear oh dear - on the replay, the youngster almost contrived to put that shot wide when he had the whole goal to aim at. Hazard really set him up nicely. Almost a blooper reel moment.

Yeah. I like the Croatians best on this side of the bracket. That said, my personal experiences playing against them back in the 1990s in Germany is that they are crazy fascists who will kill you without a second thought (even if you aren't Serbian).

East of Eden with a great shot. I love the way East European squads are able to disintegrate totally when they start losing.

Two goals in just over a minute as the Magyars were caught on the counter. De Bruyne played a long ball down the left to Hazard . who cut inside and had a long range effort land in the corner. This one is done and dusted.
