Round of 16 - France v. Republic of Ireland
I'm back where I belong in the cockpit at The Cottage hoping that today's slate of R16 matches will be a damn sight better than yesterday's bore-fest. The opening match certainly holds promise of drama. France and Ireland have previous, of course, and Martin O'Neill's team will almost certainly be seeking revenge for that TH14 handball that kept them out of South Africa 2010. The French have been good after the 85th minute of matches, but can they put together a consistent performance over 90 minutes? Can the Irish do to France what they did to Italy in the last group match? Join me for a Sunday morning cuppa to find out.

So Martin O’Neill names an unchanged team. France make four changes from the draw with Switzerland – N’Golo Kante, Blaise Matuidi, Dimitri Payet and Olivier Giroud are back in in for Yohan Cabaye, Moussa Sissoko, Kingsley Coman and Andre-Pierre Gignac.
Good morning, mate. I'm up and ready to join you, trying to keep a positive attitude about the se matches.
The teams out on the pitch warming up:
France (4-3-3): Lloris; Sagna, Rami, Koscielny, Evra; Pogba, Kanté, Matuidi; Griezmann, Giroud, Payet. Subs: Mandanda, Cosil, Jallet, Cabaye, Gignac, Martial, Schneiderlin, Mangala, Digne, Sissoko, Coman, Umtiti.
Republic of Ireland (4-4-2): Randolph; Coleman, Keogh, Duffy, Ward; Brady, McCarthy, Hendrick, McClean; Long, Murphy. Subs: Westwood, Given, Clark, O’Shea, Whelan, McGeady, Keane, Walters, Christie, Meyler, Hoolahan, Quinn.
Referee: Nicola Rizzoli (Italy)
I think this should be a much better match. France mad e some great changes and I think we will see if they are the real deal. I picked them to win it all. They started the 1998 WC just like they have this tournament and gradually got better. I expect the same this tournament.
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board for today's matches. How has your summer tutoring been going?
Deschamps certainly has gone back to Plan A with Griezmann and Giroud up front, Payet as the playmaker, Kante and Matuidi in the holding role and Pogba roaming. I did enjoy Kingsley Coman in the last two matches - he drops to the bench but may see some action in the second half.
Players in the tunnel now at the Stade des Lumiere
Thanks mate. Glad to enjoy the pleasure of your company. I have been teaching Summer School. I have enjoyed it, but it's kind of a grueling marathon, so I am pleased that Thursday is the last day of school. I will be around for three quarters of the quarters. How have you and Kate been enjoying your summer.
Morning boys,
I am here as the teams come out of the tunnel. I will try and be positive but I am so down with the entire professional game right now... something has to change. Every team plays the same way and speak of defense first and set up their side with ONE player up tough... if we are lucky
Sorry... I'll be positive!
COME ON IRELAND!!
It's been really busy and productive. We're hoping that we get a bit more R and R in July, though, to get us freshened up for the fall.
I have moved the computer into the living room but am very lonely. Gone are the days of Bob, Tom, Matt and friends here
Matt stayed at friend's house and Tom is getting ready for work
VERY LONELY
Is Ian Darke correct that the low scoring is due to too many teams at the tournament. Only half this number of European will be at the WC .
Morning, UWS - I'm with you - it's been a wretched tournament thus far and may call for some UEFA action at the end. But I'll try to stay positive as well and will just hope for some thrills and spills today in our three matches.
Strange that the schedulers put France on first and not primetime
Good morning, UWS. That will be me in a few years. Hope the blogging will help keep you company.
I think they ha d a similar schedule in the 1998 WC if I remember correctly.
What action could UEFA take?
I read MUR's email saying that FIFA changed stuff after 1990. What did FIFA do?
My solution is to lower it back to a 16 team tournament, so that the weaker teams are not forced to play these tactics.
I've heard that in several places - but I disagree. It would be one thing if the defensiveness of the minnows had been dragging the tournament down, but that hasn't been the case. It's been the defensiveness of the big boys (France, Germany, Spain, Italy) that has been the undoing of this tournament.
They're off .
False start... now we are off
The Irish to get us underway in their white and green away kit.
Penalty to Ireland in less than a minute!!!!!!!
And... here goes the passing around the back
41 seconds it took to go over the half way line...holy crap
PENALTY IRELAND
PENALTY . MATUIDI FOULS DARYL MURPHY OF THE TRACTOR BOYS A MINUTE . A SHOCKER IN STORE.
Pogba bundled Long over clumsily and now it's Robbie Brady with a great chance for the Irish. Come on!
Scores!!!!
Please score....YES!!!
ALMOST MISSED
Now that's the way to start a match - Ireland 0-1 up!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! THE LUCK OF THE IRISH AS THE HERO FROM WEDNESDAY AS ROBBIE BRADY SENDS LLORIS THE WRONG WAY AND HIS PENALTY COMES OFF THE POST AND IN. THE EARLIUEST PENALTY IN THE HISTORY OF THE EUROS./
Now then - that will have to pull the French out of their shell. They've got an early corner.
Evra wins a corner off of Shane Long.
How would you lot feel about an England v. Ireland quarter final?
Lots of head tennis of the corner from Payet then Darren Randolph finally catches the ball.
I would love that or would we.? Ireland defeated England at the 1988 Euros and held them to a draw at the 1990 WC. I have to think about that
What shell? Are you talking escargots?
French corner... fails to beat first man!!
As I was saying before the penalty... it took 40 seconds for the ball to go over the half way line. They just passed it back and sideways to keep possession... now people say they want he passing game and not the hoof forward BUT how did the ball finally go over the halfway line.... a long kadoomph by the keeper!! All the passing and then the long boot... United did it all the time last season... pass pass pass pass De Gea boot
I think I might prefer a match against the hosts. That would at least give us some room for excuses. In any case, this match will produce England's prospective QF opponents.
Payet has a chance from a free kick out wide left.
Payed free kick chance....easy save
Payet drills one into the hands of Randolph.
The French have a free k,ick outside the box. Darren Randolph will be familiar with teammmate, Payet , who curls the free kick into the hands of his fellow Hammers
France never touched the ball before they were behind
All French pressure now - the problem for the Irish is that they scored too early and will have to defend that lead for 89 minutes now.
Griezmann heads well over from the cross by Evra.
Another French corner - Payet will have to do better.
Ireland will have to weather a French storm. Can they emulate what their neighbors to the North did in 1982 against the hosts? Well their manager was the captain of that team , so you never know.
Giroud and McCarthy exchanging pleasantries now.
For the penalty, it was a typical modern day footballer....feels contact and lifts both feet of the ground and falls. It was probably a foul but...
Another piss poor corner by a modern day footballer... doesn't beat the first man. I don't understand why EVERY team does the same thing. It could be dangerous if it actually hits one of your teammates but it doesn't 98% of the time
All your big boys come up and never touch the ball
Do you all know that Darren Randolph was eligible to play for the U.S. ? He sure had a better season than Guzan or Timmy. Any opinions?
There's a stat for you - all of Ireland's goals scored by Norwich City players. Wow!
Still see the French winning this by a couple
At least the ball is going into the box
Giruoud wins a corner off of Shane Duffy of Blackburn. The corner from Payet is headed wide.
I don't have any problem with Brad Guzan. Timmy is done, though, and there is a serious drop off in quality after Big Brad.
Bob, your email said about England's play was attacking
I don't agree. They did create lots of 'chances' but most are not great. The problem is there usually only one or two players in the box IF a cross finally comes in
Payet is getting frustrated already.
The one against the Italians was assisted by a fellow Canary teammate while the penalty was won by a Tractor Boy. An East Anglian theme to the goals. I love it
Sorry for the negative comments... i'll stop. I'm just very frustrated with the game I love
I agree with UWS. The Three Lions are far too conservative and this is their chance to win this tournament due to the parity, but they won't win it playing this way
BBC website at the 13 minute mark had a Touch Map of Robbie Brady... two spots. Kick off and penalty!
Lloris is forced to come out and punch the ball away after the ball took a weird bounce from a long throw.
Those are the two touches you would want him to have.
As I have said, every team plays the same way... SO..... TRY PLAYING DIFFERENTLY!!! Teams won't be expecting it and won't be able to handle it
Last 20 minutes of Germany match for example!!!
Will Robbie Brady be the Gerry Armstrong of 1982? The one common theme is Martin, who captained the 1982 side and was playing for Norwich at the time.
I agree, UWS. But I would argue that England are the only ones in the tournament who are not playing entirely to the modern football playbook. There are still loads of problems with Woy's approach - one striker alone up front, two defensive middies. But there is something of the Premiership style in their attacking play. I still think that England should have beaten Russia 3-1, Wales by 4 or 5-0 and Slovakia 2 or 3-0. We were all over those guys - it was just the finishing that was missing.
Brady could leave Norwich and become a star in France... just like Armstrong
Payet swings another free kick in and Griezmann flicks a header into Randolph's arms.
The free kick from Payet skims off of Griezmann's head and straight to Darren Randolph. That was a free header.
The Irish looking very assured now - not overawed by the occasion at all. They know they have nothing to lose today.
Actually, I think Iceland is the only team that doesn't play the modern game. They remind of Ireland when Jackie C managed them. Difficult to beat, but playing an English style game.
What is England doing differently? They just pass it around all the time going nowhere!
Against the Slovaks, they were playing against 10 men because of a bloke off injured and Skrtyl was off for treatment so it was 11 v 9 for an attacking England throw in... what did England do? Passed it around back to Hart!!!! That's what I have a problem with
Ireland have a good effort on goal!!
Oh - a dangerous moment there for the Irish. Long throw in and Murphy had a volley on the turn that Lloris just about dealt with.
Great save by Lloris from Darryl Murphy then Hendrick shoots the rebound straight to Lloris from a narrow angle.
I agree with UWS. That is what I have observed from watching England as well. If they play differently then they could win this tournament.
Not true, mate. Have a look at any of the England matches on your DVR. They created loads of chances and were the only team to effectively use their full backs to create width.
Hendrick fouls Pogba from behind
Another French free kick - surely too long for Payet to try one.
People say Iceland will be tough fore England because they will just sit back and England aren't smart enough to break them down. They wanted England to play a team that attacked so we could break... a sad state of affairs when a team has to be described as attacking....they all should
Pogba strikes it but it doesn't really trouble Randolph. France have had a couple of shots on target but none has really been that dangerous.
Decent effort by Pogba.. saved quite easily though
Did you guys watch any of the USA game last night
US did a lot better last night than they did in the first Colombian match
The free kick from Payet is easily gathered by Darren Randolph. who sees those in training every day He could have been doing that for the U.S.
So, England in the wrong half of the draw but wins by Ireland, Italy and Slovakia would be nice
I disagree - England will create a lot of chances. I just hope that Harry Kane has his shooting boots on tomorrow - he's been a big disappointment so far. But England have lots of weapons.
I have been watching Copa America . It's been a much better tournament . Why are there more attacking teams in that tournament than this one?
They will need to have more that one or two people in the box!!!
That is true, UWS - we could still see some surprises. I have not been impressed by any of the big matches.
England should be able to defeat Iceland, but I don't see them defeating the Italians. I hope I'm wrong. Woy needs to change the tactics.
Kante chops down a player and picks up a yellow that will mean that he misses out on the quarters.
Kane booked for foul on McCArthy and will be suspended if France make the quarers
I don't think so either but we wouldn't see the Italians until the semis. That would be seen as relative success in Britain, right? Similar to the heroics in Italia 90.
Shane Long is down needing treatment now. It looks very hot and sunny there.
Coleman was booked for a foul from behind on Payet. Did Pasta Rizzoli book him because he refers Dijon or because he likes the Hammers better than the Toffees ? Does anyone have an answer to that mystery?
I think that would be considered a decent tournament. I think Jon Champion says it's 75 degrees. Not hot by my standards, but perhaps theirs.
Ireland waste a chance as a foul throw is called because they stole too many yards Evra did not make the same mistake.
Wasn't Robbie Brady part of the MUFC Academy? The Academy sure has produced a good number of players in this tournament
How has the weather been your way, MUR? My friend in Phoenix has been complaining of 122F temps - wow!
A wasted free kick for the French as they are called for a push or a grab.
Giroud is penalized for tugging on an Irish shirt. And now another Irish is down for treatment. Is this time wasting already?
Yikes! I shouldn't complain. Highs have been in the mid to upper 90s most days.
I hope Ireland don't just waste time every chance they get
It doesn't work
Hendrick has been down a couple of times. He may need to be replaced. The Derby County player has been one of the surprises of the tournament.
I agree. It would ruin what has been a decent match
Our weather will be in the mid 90s today...lovely swimming weather. Pool temperature is lovely right now
Ireland win a corner now - shame that cross was too long for Brady.
Shane Long wins a corner off of Evra after chasing down an overcooked cross.
That cross was meat and drink for Hugo.
Lloris catches the corner.
Ireland with the corner...beats the first man!!! Straight into keepers arms though!
Sounds like our weather.
The Magyars vs the Waffles may not be a good match because both teams will be playing not Toulouse.
Crossing in the modern day is so PATHETIC!!
Is it the ball?
Are players trying to do something special with the ball?
Just put it into the danger area
Really poor cross from Sagna. You see the difference there with England who have been using Kyle Walker and Danny Rose in those positions to really attack the full back and put in more incisive balls. The French have been toothless here.
Kante is out of the quarters... lovely
Hendrick picks up a stupid booking for kicking the ball away. He will be suspended if the Irish advance.
Struth... I thought that was going to be two!!
Shane Duffy heads wide from a free kick by Robbie Brady
Oh - that free kick could have easily been nodded in - if anything, the Irish have created the better chances and could be 2-0 up.
Ireland are attacking.. pleased to see
This match is better than all of the ones yesterday
The first one was not bad but i missed the second half because of my walk
Will the French get booed off at half time - I wouldn't be surprised.
Shaqiri's goal was number 1 in ESPN Top Ten
Agreed. They look more likely to score despite defending the vast majority of the half.
Now Rami is out for the quarters - that works for England!
Rami booked for a foul from behind on Shane Long and he will be suspended if France make the quarters
I hope that Woy is watching this - the Irish are showing us how to get after the French.
The French players are arguing with each other now - not a good sign for them.
Shaquiri's goal is worthy of winning an award
4 added minutes...hurry up... I have to go to the loo
Four minutes of stoppage time.
How did the French not score there... the Irish were no where
Oh - a mad scramble in the Irish box - but somehow they blocked both Payet and Griezmann's efforts.
Somehow , the Irish survive an onslaught on their goal as they fail to clear and have to block several close range efforts.
Not a good effort by Payet
Ireland not getting enough people forward.
One against 6
stuart Robson must have been listening to Bob because he stated that the French need more width
THE MODERN GAME NEEDS MORE WIDTH!!!
That should about do it for the first half, then.
That's it
Half time
Ireland could beat Italy, France and England back to back to back
It's halftime amidst a chorus of boos as the Irish are shockingly one up at the half sue to the earliest ever penalty scored at a Euro./
I Expect Deschamps to make a couple of substitutions at the half.
This was from a text on the BBC
Goals by Clubs
Norwich City 3
Barcelona 2
A Madrid 1
Bayern 0
United 0
Real have had at least five goals thru Bale 3 Ron 2
LOL! That's brilliant.
That was one of the most entertaining halves of football we’ve had at the tournament so far. O’Neill’s team have been nothing short of magnificent. Still - the French have been really poor.
Kingsley Coman is on for Kante. Bob will approve of that change
Kingsley Coman is coming on for Kante now - an attacking move. I like it.
Second half underway
The second half is underway from Lyon , where Llloris previously played .
Horrific cross there from Sagna - he's been so bad.
Great stat about scoring by club . really eye catching
Also because he has a card
Useless cross by Sagna
Will the Irish win in Lyon so that they can face the Three Lions?
Shane Long was nearly off to the races there.
That too. Great point.
Payet is upended by Coleman who will need to watch himself in this second half.
Oh - that could easily have snuck in the back post.
I thought that was a foul on Long... he could have gotten that ball.
Now the French have a free kick chance
Payet to take...headed wide at the back post by Kos
Payet is pushed down by Coleman. He takes and Kos heads wide.
The irish touch saved a goal there
Coman runs into trouble and then runs the ball out o play. Not an auspicious start for him.
Is this like Northern Ireland vs Spain in 1982 where Martin was the skipper?
Coman overran the ball like a former United player did to earn that nickname.
Great break from Ireland... gets it wide... novel idea... get a great cross in... novel idea... very dangerous
OH!!!! A vital push away by Lloris off the cross from MCClean or the Irish could have been two up.
Our pal WHR and his son are en route to Nice at the moment ahead of that England v. Iceland match tomorrow. I'm jealous!
France go straight up the pitch and Pyaet drags an effort wide.
Ireland have been more of a threat than France.
Not very Nice, mate.
Payet in full stride jinks inside but his shot is blocked by the steadfast Irish defense.
Ireland are going to hold on till late but still lose
France seem to leave it late. Is it the substitutions or is it a testament to their fitness? I think their late goals have been scored in the evening when it is cooler.
The schedule is whacko... teams getting a whole week's rest while opponents getting three
Darren Randolph does well to push a shot from Matuidi around the post.
I don't understand that either.
Are they really!! I AM SO JEALOUS OF THE MENDITTOS!!!
well, of course they could be bored to tears... while paying mega bucks
The short corner comes to nothing.
Feels so good... 2 and half months off... nothing to do!!
I would love to be on that vacation just for the experience. My brother got to watch two matches in the 1994 WC in Orlando.
I don't know how Johnno got tickets - but he does have friends in high places.
GOAL! Griezmann equalizes!!!
1-1!!
Decent header from a good cross... who'da thunk it
GOAL !!! GRIEZMANN HEADS IN THE EQUALIZER FROM A CROSS BY SAGNA.
First decent cross over from Sagna and Griezmann did well to guide his header past Randolph.
1-1!
Oh - a good chance for Ireland there!
can't imagine that England was stressed much after that first half, watching France unable to impose itself on Ireland.
I am not sure if this second half represents a better France, or an Ireland that was content to grind out a win. Oh well, that didn't work.
I know Bob saw a lot of 94 matches. I saw the Nigeria Italy match at Foxboro
Bob saw matches in Japan WC and Euro 96... he's the lucky one
Stephen Ward has a long range effort go wide off a poor French clearance. Should have been given as a corner.
I would be stunned if Ireland come back into this one
Hello Red Devil . Great to have you on board.
Much better entertainment than yesterday
You picked the right day to go on a road trip!
Why on earth did you have to go to another state to get an inspection
shambolic defending on that 2nd goal
Griezmann scores again!!!!!
2-1!
HE's scored again!!!
2-1!!
France are rampant now!
GOAL !!!! GRIEZMANN AT THE DOUBLE AS HE GIVES FRANCE THE LEA.D. tWO GOALS IN THREE AND A HALF MINUTES
Great header from the Gunner... will the french fans give him credit
Wonderful knock back by Giroud to Griezmann and he finished with aplomb with his left peg.
How was Griezmann that wide open? Giroud headed down a long ball and Griezmann shot past a stranded Darren Randolph.
Tom and Matt are now tied for Golden Boot
I don't know why teams are content to sit on leads and give up the initiative. It is so much more tiring to run after the other guy than to run where you want to go. The Irish look very tired, now.
great run by Mclean... put in the wrong cross... BLOODY HELL
Griezmann is now on three goals for the tournament and is a decent shout for Golden Boot.
Oh - McClean nearly got around Rami.
Jon Champion said that Ireland will have do something they have never done in a Euro, which is score twice in match.
