Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The RNC - Day 1

As you all know, my second favorite sport to follow is US politics. I took a week or so off from the blog after that disappointing finish to France 2016 but I'm back and feeling refreshed after that break.

So, starting tonight, I'll be blogging the primetime coverage of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. It's the Trump Show this week, so you know that it's going to be lively. Regardless of your political views, I hope you'll join me here for a drink and a natter this week. Cheers!

Tonight's theme is "Make America Safe Again," so expect a lot of talk about national security and immigration. Fairly standard boilerplate Republican stuff.

The marquee speakers tonight, if you can call them that are Texas Governor Rick Perry, Kansas Senator Jodi Ernst, Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and The Donald's wife Melania. Trump is taking the unusual step of appearing each night of the convention, including introducing his wife tonight.

The #NeverTrump caucus led by Utah senator Mike Lee has just been squeezed out with the RNC leadership blocking a roll call vote on a conscience clause that would have allowed GOP delegates to vote for whichever candidate they wanted rather than for Trump.

The floor erupted with opposing chants of "Roll Call!" and "Trump!" for the better part of half an hour. Hardly an auspicious start.

Now the Colorado delegation has walked off the floor of the convention in protest. Wow!

I caught a bit of Charles in Charge's speech - really unconvincing. I'm not sure that any of these people really support Trump. They're settling.

Next up is a racist fear mongering video about immigration. Fear-inducing because the entire bass bandwidth of the Quicken arena’s impressive sound system is brought to bear. The video then reveals Kelly Terry-Willis and Kent Terry, broadcasting live from the Arizona-Mexico border.

Their brother, Brian Terry, was a Border Patrol agent who died on patrol, with guns in the attack against his group traced to the Fast and Furious gun-walking program.

Rudy Giuliani is firing up the Reichstag now. And there appears to be a Code Pink protestor in the hall who is being led out.

Cheers mate. That commercial asking us to dial the 800 number to vote for Trump was hilarious.

I noticed that. The police are there to protect us no matter our race? Who is he kidding? I enjoyed watching the protestor.

Rudy Guilani doesn't want Black Lives Matter to divide people because he would rather the Republicans do that.

Apparently this is the night to dump on Black Lives Matter. Really? Even if you didn't appreciate BLM, is that really all that needs fixing in this country?

Nothing to say about health care or schools or infrastructure or transportation or the environment. Just BLM?
