Sunday in the Premiership
I'm getting a late start on the action today, after a lovely lie-in after a late night out with the missus. Still plenty of the good stuff to watch today, though. Join me for the end of Chelski v. WBA, followed by United v. Spurs at 9:15am and then Liverpool v. the Hammers at 11:30am. It's a weird schedule today but the football should be good. I'll look forward to the pleasure of your company.
214 Comments:
This one has definitely not gone to script - the Baggies have held Chelski to a 0-0 draw with only 25 minutes to play. Hang on to your hats.
A draw here at Stamford Bridge would leave Chelski only a point ahead of Arsenal, who won big yesterday.
It feels like Chelsea are building some pressure for the first time in the match. Willian has been introduced.
Matic tries a pop from distance but it's well wide of the mark.
Fabregas comes on for Moses, so Chelsea are now playing a 4-2-3-1 with “Cesc” behind Diego Costa.
I don’t know if a goal is coming but a chance certainly is - they are having more sustained pressure in the final third.
GOAL! And just like that Diego Costa turns the match around for the Blues. Wonderful strike!
A long ball out wide right and Costa had so much to do to shake off Gareth McAuley and then rifle a shot from an acute angle into the upper 90. Very impressive effort from the Brazilian-born Spaniard.
And of course that takes Costa back to the top of the scoring chart with 12 goals.
Substitutions galore: Chelsea bring on Ivanovic for Hazard, and West Brom introduce Chadli and McClean for Phillips and Morrison.
The Baggies pressing their claim now - I would love to see a jammy equalizer fly in to spoil the party at the Bridge.
Chelsea have declared at 1-0, like all good Italian sides, and West Brom are enjoying more possession than at any point in the match. So far it has all been in front of the Chelsea back six though.
West Brom’s final substitution: Hal Robson-Kanu replaces Chris Brunt.
Chelski wrap up another win that they might not have got. These are the kinds of matches that make or break champions. Everything doesn't always click for a top side and they need a moment of brilliance from their top men to get through the tough patches.
Next up we've got United hosting Spurs - a veritable Europa League playoff.
Good morning, Bob. I had a late l;ie in as well and am ready to watch United vs the Spuds. Hope you and Kate had a great time
Teams are in the tunnel now at OT:
Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Darmian; Carrick, Herrera; Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Martial; Ibrahimovic. Subs: Romero, Bailly, Blind, Fellaini, Mata, Rashford, Rooney.
Tottenham: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Wanyama, Dembele; Eriksen, Alli, Son; Kane. Subs: Vorm, Wimmer, Davies, Dier, Winks, Sissoko, Nkoudou.
For the Premiership completists, Southampton are also hosting Middlesboro at the same time.
Correct, mate. Both teams will be in the EL draw tomorrow, but cannot face each other in the Round of 32
Would we rather watch that match? It sounds like a classic.
Oh dear - we can only hear the Spurs fans singing as the teams come out. What's happened to the United faithful?
Morning, MUR - thanks for joining me for the big one.
Spurs about to get us underway; both sides playing in their traditional colors.
They're off from OT
COME ON MAN UNITED!
THis match is for bragging rights between Sunshine and Yours Truly.
OH!!!Miki got free down the right and passed to Pogs , who forced a save from international teammate, Lloris
Oh - great chance for Pogba. Lloris saved well. Pogba could have put his foot through that one.
United are popping the ball around sharply and Alderweireld does well to cut out a through pass from Mkhitaryan, who is lurking in a little inside-right pocket and proving hard to pick up.
Any thoughts about Chelski's late win against the Baggies?
Number One Son cuts inside Jones , but shoots high and wide.
It doesn't sound too convincing, but as you stated true Champions know how to grind out results on these type of days. Also , Costa is sole GBB.It sounds like a tricky trip to the Hawthorns on my birthday
Great Armenian spelling . I will need to take a crash course during the holidays
Miki is well wide with a left footed volley as a cross was headed out. That would have been one of my better volleys in the day
Clumsy foul by Pogs on Wanyama as United couldn't clear their lines.
The free kick makes it to Pogs , who concedes a throw by United's corner flag.
United with another careless foul, this time , Herrera on Kane.
OH!!! Superb save by De Gea from Eriksen's free kick.
HOT OFF THE PRESS:
United can't handle the press.
Now United have a free kick and a poor free kick from Miki is headed away, then United concede a free kick to end any attacking threat
So who would you like to get in the EL draw?
OH!!!! A powerful volley by Miki was blocked for a UNited corner after some crisp one touch passing. The corner leads to some ping pong that is cleared by Delle Alli and a long range effort from Herrera is straight to Lloris
That was close!
Not sure. I will check.Since we were Group Runners up , we get a group winner or one of the four best teams that parachuted into the EL other than the Spuds, so it won't be easy. I would say that APOEL of Cyprus is the weakest group winner along with Sparta Prague and Genk. The weakest of the four best teams that parachuted is probably FC Copenhagen. I guess those are my choices.
United have definitely been on the front foot for most of this half.
Those sound like reasonable fixtures.
Miki is a bundle of energy, which is why we signed him in the first place.
GOAL! Miki with his first Premier League goal!
1-0 United!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! MIKI GIVES UNITED THE LEAD WITH HIS FIRST EVER PREM GOAL AS HE WAS PUT THROUGH AND HIT THE ROOF OF THE NET WITH JUST LLORIS TO BEAT
The description of the goal is really simple. Harry Kane was caught dilly dallying at the halfway line as the ball was karate chopped away and made it to Herrera. His slide rule pass caught out the SPuds defense and Miki did the rest
Bob will be pleased to see that Valencia was booked for a rash foul on Danny Rose, the former LUFC Academy player.
LLoris saves from Zlatan off a pass from Valencia as the Spuds coughed up the ball yet again
Danny gets his fair share of abuse.
De Gea does well to tip over a curler from the Number One Son. Wmayama heads straight up into the air to De Gea off the corner then UNited counter, but the Spuds attack again and Herrera fouls Eriksen
The free kick is headed away and United counter until Miki concedes possession.
AN interesting bit of trivia . Arlo said that Miki is the first Armenian to score in the Prem and the 96th different nationality to score in the Prem. Were you aware of that, mate?
Delle Alli wins a corner off a slide rule pass down the right
I was not - for some reason I thought he was either Turkish or Armenian. Is he qualified to play for the US?
The corner from Eriksen is out for another.
The next one is taken short , then Dembele fouls a United defender.
I wish he was, but he's already been capped by Armenia.
A karate chop finds thin air and threatens a fan in the nosebleed section.
Good half for United.
A minute of stoppage time./
Agreed. We need to maintain this in the second half.
Eriksen wins a corner.
It's headed away and United are one up at the half.
It's 0-0 at the half between Saints and Boro from St. MAry's
The second half is underway from OT after doing some halftime chores and eating brekkies.
Back for the second half with a fresh cuppa.
The Rams defeated Forest 3-0 as they are moving up the table.
Welcome back, mate
United have an early free kick chance here. shallow one flicked on by Carrick but cleared out.
That moves the Rams up to fifth , ahead of Leeds. I picked the Rams to win promotion via the playoffs.
United a bit under the cosh with some careless defending
Eriksen takes a drive at Twilight who punches free. Nice cut and thrust to this one now.
De Gea punches away a swerving effort from Eriksen that was straight at him
I can live with sixth for the time being. Hope we can get something out of Reading Railroad on Tuesday.
Oh dear - Eriksen found Wanyama beautifully with the free kick but he contrived to head back across the area. What was he thinking? Free header!
Agreed. United were let off the hook there. I think I've seen this before.
Wishing your team a great ride against the visiting Reading Railroad. Ride the Crazy Rails.
Sissy is on for Number One Son as Poch makes his first change,
Another Spuds corner and another SPuds foul to end the threat. Wanyama leads with his arm on Jones and picks up his requisite booking , to the delight of the United fans.,
Boufal gives Saints the lead vs Boro. Good news for Johnno ahead of a thankless match at Anfield.
I don't blame Jose for being furious at Kung Fu Panda as he was going on a Sunday walkabout after gifting possession to the SPuds.
I fully expect to see the Panda get the hook in the next few minutes.
Dembele fouls Pogs about thirty yards from goal.
OH!!!! A rocket of a free kick from Pogs crashes off the bar. So unlucky,.
What a strike from Pogba!!
This one could still swing either way, IMHO.
Agreed, mate. He cannot have any complaints about being karate chopped off the pitch by Jose.
Oh - now Pogba's effort has been saved brilliantly by Lloris!
OH !!! What a save by Lloris from Pogs. Superb reflex save headed for the corner.
I didn't think that either of those were pens - you?
Pogs booked for a foul on Dembele after United should have had a penalty for a foul by Vertonghen on Herrera.
I thought the last one was. Too high a challenge by Vertonghen.
Walker wins a corner off of Pogs.
It happens in the blink of an eye as Harry Winks is on for Dembele.
Yeah - but I thought Herrera went down too easily.
Rojo fouls Harry Kane just outside the box.
De Gea does well to push away the free kick from eriksen
Cue the entrance of Rashford.
I was right - Panda troops off; Rash on.
The first United change and as we expected Jose's first change is a karate chop as Rash is on in his place.
Spurs have a bit over 15 minutes to rescue this one.
Roon is warming up. This would be a great time for him to break Sir Bobby's record.
I think we have Sissy of the SPuds to thank as much as anyone else for constantly gifting us possession and with timely fouls to end Spuds threats
Miki is booked for a foul.
Miki's got the full set now - great goal and a booking.
Kyle Walker is booked for a foul on Rash due to a tug of the shirt.
BUGGER!!! Hair Bear is warming up. Didn't Jose learn from last week?
Danny Rose clears for a United corner.
Hair Bear comes out to warm up and is booed, which I don’t think is great form but such are the times we exist in.
Danny Rose goes into the book - it's that time of the match for Bobby Madley to raise his caution quota.
A horrible LUFC Academy challenge as he was beaten for speed by Miki and booked for fouling him from behind.
I think the ref named after the former Leeds players has had a decent match. The bookings seem to have been valid.
Miki's got a problem now. They're calling for a stretcher. He's been through all of the emotions in this match.
Miki is still down from that challenge.
Nkoudou is on for eriksen.
BUGGER!!!! He is being stretchered off as he is the one player we can ill afford to lose.
A defensive change designed to shut up shop as Bailey is on for Miki.
Dele Alli with a really poor foul on Carrick.
Pogs wins a free kick in a wink.
United fans not singing the praises of Danny Rose.
Rashford with a wasted effort there on the free kick. Why is Rash taking free kicks in the first place?
Boos for Danny Rose as his relationship with United fans is not at all rosy.
This will be a solid win for United, moving them within six points of Spurs in 5th and 8 points from Citeh in fourth. Those are the reasonable targets for United - they're effectively out of the title race.
agreed about Rash. I was thinking the same thing.
I agree with that assessment providing United hold on to the lead.
YIKES!!! Half a dozen minutes of stoppage time.
Walkies for Sparky at the end of the match regardless of the result.
Six minutes to be added on, which makes everyone nice and jittery...squeaky bum time.
BLOW UP REF!
Saints still leading Boro 1-0.
Saints have defeated Boro 1-0
Soton have won out 1-0 over Boro in the other less interesting match. Much less high scoring Sunday today than yesterday.
Danny Rose wins a Spuds corner that is headed away. United fail to clear.
Heart in mouth moment for United fans - Danny Rose goes down in the area. Now that one looked like a stronger shout to me. Went over Carrick's knee.
Danny Rose went down, looking for a penalty , but Bobby Madeley wasn't falling for that nonsense.
Hair Bear on for Herrera in the final minute. He would do well not to do anything daft or stupid.
Into ET of ET due to subs..
A big win for United then. A six pointer in the chase for European slots for next season. Well done, mate.
I'll be back for the late one.
PHEW!!! United hold on to end a run of draws with a 1-0 win over the Spuds.
I'm back for the late one - Liverpool v. WH, which promises to be another absorbing one. We haven't had the high scoring matches that we enjoyed yesterday but it's still been interesting.
Here are the teams lining up in the famous tunnel at Anfield:
Liverpool (4-3-3) Karius; Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner; Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Mane, Origi, Firmino.
Substitutes: Mignolet, Moreno, Klavan, Lucas, Alexander-Arnold, Ejaria, Woodburn.
West Ham (possible 4-2-3-1) Randolph; Nordtveit, Reid, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Noble, Obiang; Antonio, Lanzini, Payet; Ayew.
Substitutes: Adrian, Carroll, Fletcher, Fernandes, Quina, Browne, Pike.
Referee Mark Clattenburg
Back from walkies just in time for Pool vs the Hammers to kick off.
We're underway - Liverpool in their famous all-red kit and West Ham in their change white and sky blue outfit.
This is a vital one for the Hammers. If they get anything, they can leapfrog Swansea and get out of the bottom three again. Lose by a lot and they're drop under Hull into second bottom.
The Hammers are in the drop zone, behind the Swans slightly on goal difference. If they avoid defeat, they move out and will be replaced by the Swans. Pool will stay third with a win , but need one to keep pace with Chelsea and the Gunners
Liverpool conversely are safe in third but can put some pressure on Arsenal in second with a win here today. They really do need to keep up the pace wth the top two.
Pool , predictably, doing all the early attacking as Wijnaldum was offside..
GOAL! That didn't take long! Lallana drives Liverpool into the lead and the Hammers are immediately in the dumps.
GOAL !!! THEN LALLANA GIVES POOL AN EARLY LEAD.
Nice run and cross from Mane, who has been a real spark for Liverpool this season, and Lallana had time to bring the ball down, turn and shoot into the corner.
1-0 Reds!
The Hammers win a corner taken by Payet , punched away by Karius and volleyed over by Lanzini
Oh - Antonio did well to work his way into the Liverpool area. His shot was deflected out.
The goal allstemmed from the free kick taken by Darren Randolph that was headed back by Pool . The ball made it out to Mane , who ran down the left. His pass was collected by Lallan and cooly dispatched in the corner.
Antonio was through , but a poor touch let him down and Karius tipped over an effort from a narrow angle.
I predict that this will be the only Sunday match not to finish 1-0.
Firmino has a shot deflected for a corner.
The corner from Hendo is headed out
Liverpool could easily run up a score here. I fear for the Hammers now.
Randolph is going to earn his corn today. He rushed out there to grab the ball away from the oncoming Mane.
The Gunners increased the score late on. Will Pool do the same?
Payet wins a corner off of Milner.
The Hammers have a vital match Wednesday as they host Burnley in the claret and blue derby on Wednesday while Pool travel to the Riverside on Wednesday in a match they should win. Meanwhile it will be a repeat of the FA Cup Final As United are in action at Selhurst Park on Wednsday
Lallana with a clumsy foul on Obbiang near the D
The best chance that West Ham have had this half now - Payet over a free kick.
GOAL! Payet returns to his form of last season!!!!
GOAL !!!PAYET TIES IT UP WITH A CURLING FREE KICK THAT WENT UNDER THE DIVE OF kARIOUS. hE SHOULD HAVE SAVED IT, BUT IT'S 1-1
Excellent free kick but Karius won't want to see that replayed . I reckon he might have got down a bit quicker for that one. Still....
1-1!
That moves the Hammers out of the drop zone and the Swans back in. Johnno will be delighted.
Hendo wins a corner after some nice Pool on touch passing. The corner from Hendo was headed away, but Pool maintain possession.
Milner is down injured as the Hammers win a corner.
Matip heads away the corner from Payet
Former Liverpool keepers, Ray Clemence and Bruce Grobelaar are sitting together in the stands watching and are probably not impressed by the goal let in by Karius.
Firmino is just wide with a long range effort then Reid gets away with a sloppy clearance as Pool pile on the prssure
GOAL! Antonio has put a knife into Liverpool's belly!
GOAL !!!! THEN ANTONIO GIVES THE HAMMERS A SHOCK LEAD ON THE COUNTER.
Terrible defending and goalkeeping on that one. One of the defenders missed a header completely allowing Antonio to run on to the ball. And then Karius was caught in no-man's land, flailing, as Antonio dinked the ball past him.
1-2!
It all started with a short throw from Darren Randolph to his right back . Several passes later, a comedy of errors occurred when a long aimless ball from Nordveit took a deflection, Matip was caught ball watching and Karius was hesitant as Antonio slotted past him.
Antonio took a hard tumble there onto the hard track.
Firmino heads a cross from Wijnaldum wide.
Milner took a similar tumble a few minutes ago.
The current score puts the Hammers three points above the drop zone.
Payet appear to trip Lallana in the box, but it's merely a Pool corner.
Clattenberg has a big decision to make there as Lallana appears to be pushed over by Payet. Nothing doing.
OH Matip heads the corner from Hendo off the bar.
Oh - Matip heads onto the bar from the resulting corner!!
It's halftime and the Hammers have a shock 1-2 lead at Anfield. Johnno must be delighted.
The sides are back out now. One change for Liverpool - Lovren has come off and Klavan has come on. This one is perfectly poised as Liverpool will have to attack.
If Karias drops another clanger in front of the Kop in this second half, it may be curtains for the young German.
I'm back from a refreshing shower for what promises to be an interesting second half.
GOAL! An immediate response as Origi profits from a clanger by Randolph to tap home.
Desmond at Anfield!!
GOAL !!! DESMOND AT ANFIELD. MANE WENT ON A RUN DOWN THE LEFT. RANDOLPH COMPLETELY MISSED A CROSS AND A GREATFUL ORIGI TAPPED IN AT THE FAR POST.
I will need to leaver in about fifteen minutes of this enticing match for a tutoring job, but I will make sure to record this.
Just wide by wijnaldum as Clattenburg played a great advantage
The Hammers are now a mere point above the drop zone as Origi has a shot blocked for a corner off a pass from Mane.
Fimino was booked for a foul on Noble that was anything but that
Andy Ayew volleys a free kick from Payet wide.
