We're Back in Premiership Business!
It seems as if this past international break lasted longer than ever; it's finally over. We start with a bang this morning, with high-flying Liverpool visiting relegation threatened Palace. Then we have the 10am kickoffs, including high flying ManYoo hosting relegation threatened Swansea. We then finish with high flying Man Citeh visiting relegation threatened Everton. Do you sense a pattern? Join me for all the Premiership action this morning, won't you?
508 Comments:
This is a fixture that has huge implications at both ends of the table. Crystal Palace are just a couple of points above the relegation places; Liverpool are desperate to secure a berth in next season’s Champions League. Both teams would desperately love the three points today.
The teams now gathering in the tunnel at Selhurst Park:
Crystal Palace: Hennessey, Wan Bissaka, Kelly, Sakho, Van Aanholt, McArthur, Milivojevic, Cabaye, Townsend, Benteke, Zaha. Subs: Loftus-Cheek, Lee, Cavalieri, Souare, Fosu-Mensah, Delaney, Riedewald.
Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs: Clyne, Lovren, Moreno, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mignolet, Ings.
Referee: Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire).
Good morning, Bob. Glad to join you for the beginning of the end of the season.
It doesn't get any easier for Liverpool with two CL fixtures vs Citeh with the small matter of a Mersey Derby in between the two legs
They're off from Selhurst Park.
Morning, MUR - excellent timing on your part. We're all set to go here at Selhurst Park. Palace in their home kit and Liverpool in their white and black away number. We're underway!
Jon Champion and Clive Allen are the mouthpieces.
Cheers, Bob. Time to check on the coffee.
Of course, all eyes will be on Mo Salah who is on 36 goals from 41 matches overall this season, with 28 of those in the Premiership. What a strike rate!
Let's hope you don't need a strong cuppa this morning. I want goals!
Beneteke has struggled to score this season, but seems to make a habit of scoring against one of his former teams, Liverpool. Will that streak continue today.
What a player. That's why I think Egypt could be a surprise team at the World Cup this Summer.
Palace are sitting back, holding their shape. Van Dijk and Matip pass it this way and that at the back, having yet to work out how to pick the lock. It’s early, everyone’s finding their feet.
They could well be. I'm really glad that we'll be facing Tunisia rather than Egypt in the group.
Oh - first real chance now. Long ball from the back finds Zaha in a great position. He took it down well but Karius was able to save. Strong suspicion of an arm for control there.
England have only themselves to blame if they cannot advance from a group ahead of Tunisia and Van Halen's team.
Another long ball to Zaha now and Karius catches him. Penalty!
OH!!! First chance from Pool as Van Dijck as it was headed in , but Mane deflected it wide.
PENALTY PALACE AS KARIUS IS DESERVEDLY CALLED FOR A FOUL ON ZAHA.
Yellow card for Karius. Milivojevic steps up and fires Palace into the lead!
GOAL!!!! MILOVOJEVIC SCORES WITH A WELL P[LACED PENALTY , SENDING KARIUS THE WRONG WAY
Karius booked for attempting to play the ball, but did he? Should it have been a red? Pool may be lucky not to be a man down
Firmino gets a break there but scuffs his shot at the keeper.
Easy long range save from Hennessey that lacked any power.
Milner fouls Cabaye about 25 yards from goal
Now Milner gives away a free kick in an interesting position. Liverpool are not feeling comfortable right now.
Poor free kick from Milovojevic is basically a pass to Karius.
Milivojevic tries to pick out Benteke, but the big Belgian striker wasn't on the same wavelength. Good start for Palace, though.
Motherwell two up vs Rangers early on.
The skies have opened up over Selhurst Park. Should make the playing surface a bit slippy now.
Mane goes down looking for a penalty. Neil Swarbrick instead produces a yellow card for simulation.
Only two Football League matches tomorrow due to the full schedule yesterday. Leeds with a trip to the Cottage on Tuesday. I'm sure you will be a more than friendly host
Mane booked for a horrible dive off a challenge from MacArthur and deservedly so.
Morning boys
I have watched the first part of match upstairs. I now here with you as Mane does his best impersonation of an Olympic diver
Why go down...he was open in the box
Mane will be given a hostile reception in avenue that can be really volatile when in form., which it is today. These fans don't put up with much.
Good morning, UWS. Great to have you on board.
Salah with his first shot of the match. He turns PVA and his shot is easily saved by Hennessey.
Bobby F wins a corner off of former Pool defender, Sacko
Mane scores off the corner as it was headed on by Bobby F and Mane was well offside. Great call by the linesman.
Ball in the net.. but offside!
Mane deflects another header...this time he should have... but off offside
As Clive Allen says, the official are doing really well
Morning, UWS - I'm just back from a trip to the bog. No Nocito Curse for me, I see.
I can't tell if the fans are singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" or the hook from "Crocodile Rock."
A full schedule of Football League matches Monday with four Championship matches Tuesday. Forest vs Barnsley on ESPN 3 at 10 and a really evil match on ESPN 3 at 2:45 PM in a return to Bramall Lane for Evil Neil. Sounds like a Super Villains reunion!
I miss the Easter Program in the Premier League
It stopped with the CL quarters being this week. I know it was still happening in the Premier League era
I just forgot about Uncle Woy's disasterous spell in charge of Pool. My bruv is still upset about that
Benteke picks up a yellow card for a silly challenge.
I love having this next week off but it is really early. It is usually near the end of the month.
It is going to be a long ending to the school year. Most of April, all of May and most of June...sigh
What does your brother make of Klippity Klopp, MUR?
I remember the 4-4 draw between Bradford City and either Derby County or West Ham in 2000. I wonder when that stopped. I miss Prem footie during Easter too.
At least you have the World Cup to look forward to, mate. Hang in there.
He loves him. Thinks he's fantastic.
Beneteke booked for a silly foul on Van Dijck.
I am scared the WC is going get me more annoyed with the game I love
Everyone plays the same way.... boring
Salah with a powerful long range effort straight to Hennessey.
I have the same concerns, UWS .
You don't see foul throws that often at this level.
A foul throw from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
A scramble in the Palace box then Bobby F has a shot deflected just over for a corner.
Oh - saved off the line from Mane's header from the corner. Close call.
Mane has a header blocked off the corner from Salah
McArthur dives in on Milner and picks up a late yellow.
MacArthur booked for a foul on Wijnaldum
A pair of stoppage time minutes.
Liverpool's manager is not Klopping about his team's performance. Uncle Woy is very calm.
Half time
Palace one up...lovely jubbly
Came just in time... off to the loo
Klopp will want to get his team into the dressing room now to make some changes. Palace go in 1-0 up.
Palace one up at the half where Pool seem to be rattled and will be even more so during the halftime talk.
The second half is underway from Selhurst Park.
Fred is off in his cat bed, giving himself a bath while Yours Truly is left alone.
I'm back from a half-time snuggle with the missis. With a win here, Palace would pull five points clear from relegation and would be nearly safe, in my view.
Bugger.. Mane's day just got a whole lot better
1-1
GOAL! Not so fast - Mane equalizes early on in the half.
GOAL !!! MANE DIVERTS IN A CLOSE RANGE EFFORT OFF A PASS FROM MILNER OFF A LONG POOL POOL POSSESSION. GREAT CROSS FIELD PASS FROM SALAH TO MILNER.
The left fullback let Mane go into the middle and then played him onside
Really good work from Milner out wide left, who exchanges passes with Bobby Firmino before firing a low cross to Mane who finished easily.
1-1!
Btw, NO Liverpool goal on this blog should ever be announced in all capital letters!!
Salah volleys just wide after head tennis in the Palace box.
Oh - now it's Salah with a lovely volley. Not too far away from the top corner.
Why is that, UWS?
Tavernier pulls on back for Rangers with a spot kick as they trail 2-1 at Motherwell.
Now he's shepherd the ball out for a corner kick!!
Yes. Why???
It's LIVERPOOL....nuff said
Rangers have scored two goals in two minutes as they have come from two down to make it Desmond at Motherwell.
Liverpool knocking on the door again - it seems like only a matter of time before they score again.
It's similar to United's match at Selhurst
True - very similar.
Benteke....bloody useless!!!
Oh - what a bad miss from Benteke. That sums up his entire season. Great pal from Townsend to find him, though.
ANOTHER CHANCE.... ruddy norah!!!
OH!!! Beneteke with a horrible miss as Milovojevic blocked a pass from Milner and he was was put through by Townsend then Benteke shoots over with just Karius to beat off another pass from Townsend. Two missed sitters in a minute
Bloody hell - Townsend sets his teammate up again and Benteke misses again! Andros might want to rethink his passing now.
A Liverpool win here would put them two point ahead of United but having played two more games... love Palace to get something out of this to keep United ahead of the Merseysiders
UWS would have been licking his chops at those chances.
Mane... handball it... is that a second yellow... Palace players asking for it... don't like that
We have a must win match vs the Swans which will be shown on NBCSN at 10.
Mane could go off, here! He was already booked for simulation in the first half.
Agreed, UWS. I understand the fans, but not the players even though it would be the correct decision.
Referee Swarbrick has allowed Mane to continue, not sure why.
Mane gets away with it. A free kick , but not a second yellow.
I don't think he's going to card him because of the Palace player wanted one
That was definitely a intentional handball. He wanted to call the foul himself. Place could have been in there
Free kick... well saved
Oh - Karius saves from the free kick by Van Arnholt. Decent stop.
Karius does well to turn a round a powerful free kick from PVA.
In the last few minutes, Palace should have had two goals and Liverpool a red card!
Klopp will be making a double substitution . Two players that played for England in midweek about to come on.
Mane is going off but being replaced
He really should have gone. That was a blatant handball
Boos for Mane as he's replaced by the Ox while Lallana is on for Wijnaldum
I agree with your last two statements, UWS.
Cheers for you comment about me finishing those chances... I am sure I would have buried on of them at least
Brum vs the Tractor Boys is the only 10 AM match in the top four divisions besides the Prem. The Tigers vs Villa is the late Championship match
Smart of Klopp to withdraw Mane for Lallana at this time.
Glad to help. Bet you would have buried them both and then be congratulated
Lallana down off a challenge with Milovojevic just minutes after coming on. Sad that his contribution lasted just a couple of minutes.
Lallana is down hurt after he just came on... he looks crocked!!
Surely he won't be on the plane... is it his hammy?
Looks like he is going off
Looks like Lallana has picked up an injury. That will be the end of his dream of getting back into the England squad. Stretcher being called.
Stretcher comes on... gets all ready... then he walks off
Reminds me of the buzzards in the football match from Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Lallana hobbling off. The final roll of the dice from Klopp as Loveren is on for Lallana. The sub on for the sub.
Liverpool don't deserve all three points here!
Of course, either did United a while back
LOL, UWS. Remember that movie well.
Twenty minutes remaining with the match in the balance.
Another player with hopes of being in the England squad this Summer is Tongue N Cheek as he comes on for Cabaye , who gets a standing ovation.
What do all three Liver pool subs that came on have in common?
As for the drop, who do you guys want to see go down
Looks like the Baggies are gone. They are ten points from safety.
Everyone below Everton in 9th is in danger
Bournemouth 36
Watford 36
Brighton 34
Newcastle 32
Swansea 31
Palace 31... for now
Hudders 31
West Ham 30
Southampton 28
Stoke 27
Brom 20
BIG match at West Ham today
Who were the three subs?
Good trivia question, mate. I have no idea.
Lallana, Ox, and Loveren
Pogba starts for United
All former Saints
OH!!! Scramble in the Palace box, but somehow they prevented Pool from getting a shot off.
I'd be happy with Huddersfield, Stoke and WBA. As you say, the Baggies are down already.
Well done , UWS. Actually the same as two of the Pool players that came off. Van Dijck the only former Saint that will get a full 90 minutes this match.
I don't want West Ham or Southampton to go down
Those two you picked sounds good to me
Most of Liverpool's team are ex Saints!!
It's anyone's guess as two which two teams will be accompanying the Baggies through the dreaded trap door.
Looks like Wolves and Cardiff are up
Bloody Warnock!
Hammers vs Saints will be on CNBC. A strong police presence in that match between teams managed by mediocre recycled managers
Jose is such an idiot... he hammers ANOTHER ex Saint Shaw for weeks... then says he could play this week... then puts him on the bench
Andy Robertson has a shot deflect off of young Obi Wan-Bossaka for a corner.
Oh - Firmino was nearly in there from a nice set up by Mo Salah.
De Gea
Young
Smalling
Lindeloff
Valencia
Pogba
Matic
Mata
Lingard
Sanchez
Lukaku
We will need help from one of Evil Neil's former teams on Monday as he will make a return to Bramall Lane.
Bugger... Salah... nets the winner
GOAL! Oh my goodness - Mo Salah has won it for Liverpool!
29 goals in the Premiership - wow!
BLOODY HELL. LOOKS LIKE SALAH COULD HAVE WON THE MATCH FOR POOL. NOW LEAD 1-2.
Why is Allen loving this finish so much.. Controlled and shot
Big deal
Nice run down the right and cross from Ox to Robertson. His pass went to Salah , who took a touch , fooled a defender , then finished past Hennessey in the six yard box.
He may like because it was similar to the type of goals he scored. That's my best guess.
Swansea post two players up top.. what a novel idea
Flappy
Mawson
Fernandez
Van der Hoorn
Olsson
Clucas
Ki
King
Naughton
Ayew
Dyer
Clive Allen is a fully paid up card-carrying member of the Striker's Association.
Man United loanee, FM , is on for a Star Wars character.
Liverpool now above United in the table
United need to win to over take them again
Of course, Liverpool have a better GD
Only one true striker for the Swans. Isn't Dyer more of a winger. Will he play behind one of the Ayew brothers?
Four added minutes
Fly Eagles Fly
I agree with UWS that Jose is Shaw being an idiot.
Surely you mean "Fly Robiin Fly," the 1979 disco hit by Silver Convention.
Palace now behind Huddersfield and tied with West Ham with the 30 points
West Ham and Southampton play each other
If one of them wins, they will over take Palace too
A quartet of stoppage time minutes.
COME ON DESMOND!
Very tight in that relegation battle.
I have no confidence in United getting all three points this morning
I definitely want a Spurs win tomorrow to keep Chelsea far away
It has finished Desmond between Motherwell and Rangers. Now come on down to Selhurst!
I think United will win. They may not be the most convincing.
Get the ball in the box!!
What was L-C doing there!!
Bloody modern day footballers
That should do it
Haha with a modern day footballers cross
It's over
Bugger
It's over as Pool have come from behind to win 1-2 at Selhurst Park.
Off for walkies with Shadow
I'll be back for Red Devils/Swans
That's it, then. Pool turn the match around there after having scored early on. They'll be gutted to be still mired in the drop zone. That said, they have a reasonably easy run in.
By the way, MUR, Kate noticed in your Facebook photo of Fred on your desk the tiniest edge of the LOB Shield peeking out from behind your desktop. Sure it should be on the mantle, mate? For shame! ;-)
Teams coming out for the 10am kickoffs now.
The relegation six pointer at London Stadium between the Hammers and Saints is on CNBC, but I'm sticking with United. Come on, you Red Devils!
They're off from OT
Nice long through ball toward Lukaku big Pogpants early doors.
I am back from walkies... As they kick off at OT
I'll be interested in the match at West Ham
I've got it on the PIP button now.
I'll tell you... Sanchez doesn't not deserve a starting spot
I thought he was going to be brilliant
The reason the LOB Shield is in the back is because it would be blocking the monitor if it was up front and because Elizabeth didn't want that clear a view.
Final Score is already showing on the Red Button channel
Love it
It may be gloomy and chilly in the U.K. , but a lovely morning here. It will be rather warm by the end of the late match
Mick Mac is out at Portman Road at the end of the season
Dull Town this season
Playing a team that sits back...YOU DON'T NEED TO HOLDING MIDS
YES!!!!!!!!!!
ONE NIL!!!
Lukaku scores assisted by Sanchez!
GOAL! The Chunk scores inside five minutes!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
THE CHUNK GIVES UNITED THE LEAD WITH A GREAT FINISH
Now we have to score two, three, four...
What the odds it will 1-0 at HT?
I hope not
The bottom of the table right now:
Bournemouth 37
Watford 37
Brighton 35
Newcastle 33
Hudders 32
Swansea 31
West Ham 31
Palace 30
Southampton 29
Stoke 27
Brom 21
Mata was onside... run inside the six Lukaku!!
A multi pass move culminated in Lindy passing to Alexis, who played a pas across the box for the Chunk to score a century of career Prem goals.
NO PIP option here . All eyes on the match at OT rather than the match between managers who have been career failures for the most part.
I never posted that last message.... well I did an hour ago!!
Extended injury at London Stadium now. It's Antonio, who tried a pop at goal and seems to have twanged something. Edmilson coming on for him.
I'm predicting 2-0 at the half.
Hope you're right... or wrong because it is three or four
I heard there was a rock concert before the match at London Stadium. Police were performing
Lukaku in... well saved by Flappy.... net the rebound Sanchez
Oh - Lukaku in again but he produces a decent save out of the keeper this time. No one following in.
We are going forward... with pace
Much better
OH!!! The Chunk was put through and Flappy made a great save to prevent The Chunk and United scoring a second
LOL! Nice one, mate. West Ham fans really have been "Driven to Tears" this season.
Clucas down off a tackle from Lindy. Does look a tad like Scholes, but plays nothing like him at all.
Cheers, Bob. A real " Sting" if Saints win
