FA Cup Quarterfinal Sunday
A very happy Sunday morning, everyone! If yesterday's schedule was complicated, today's is the mark of simplicity. We've got two FA Cup Quarterfinals on tap for today. We start at the DW Stadium, with Wigan taking on Southampton. This is likely to be the tie that produces the semi-finalist that everyone will hope to get out of the draw. Later on today, we've got Chelsea v. Leicester in a battle of the blues. So grab some brekkies and join me for all the Cup action this morning.
415 Comments:
Good morning, Bob. Great to join you for the quarterfinal action this morning
Fred seems to be doing better. He's back in his normal footie position.
Morning, MUR - are you up for some Cup action?
Wigan are definitely the giant killers of the season having eliminated Prem clubs, The Cherries, Hammers , and even high flying Citeh
The numpties at Fox are still showing us Bundesliga footie instead of previewing the upcoming match.
Yes. Fred and I are ready for another giant killing.
Morning Boys
United Semi Final opponents coming out of the tunnel.... hope so!
The match is on FS2, not FS1. I think FS 1 is showing the Bundesliga.
Ex Red Devil Powell out because of a groin injury..shame!
He was hurt in the last round
The teams now out on the pitch at the DW:
Wigan Athletic: Walton; Byrne, Dunkley, Burn, Elder; Morsy, Roberts; Massey, Power, Jacobs; Grigg. Subs: Jones, Perkins, Bruce, Hunt, Powell, Colclough, Fulton.
Southampton: McCarthy; Cédric, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Tadić, Højbjerg, Lemina, Boufal; Carrillo, Gabbiadini. Subs: Forster, Yoshida, Ward-Prowse, Sims, Romeu, Redmond, Long.
Referee: Michael Oliver
Yes - my apologies to the Fox numpties - I was on the wrong channel. All is right now.
The picture on FS2 sucks!!
Jose Mourinho was scathing in his criticism of the United performance yesterday, despite the 2-0 win over Brighton. What happened?
There was only a 10 minute pregame because of the important Formula E stuff!!
Good morning, UWS. Ready for some Cup action?
They're off from the DW that has rugby markings.
And we're away at the DW - it looks cold in Lancashire this morning.
Same as Tuesdays performance!!
Bloody Hopeless
I think it is all a stunt by Jose... players are playing the way you want them too... if they don't they will be out of the team!!
He pulls Shaw at half time for no reason!!
Great to have you boys on hand for the Cup action this morning.
Don't you think Red would have been better for Soton to wear!!
I could see Wigan winning this . Will these two be in action at ER next season? Bob may know the answer
You didn't just got to the office and miss the 'late one' but you missed the 'late late one' as well
I agree that red would be better
Fox could have put these on FS1 and not FS2.
I sense another Prem scalp for Wigan. They have started the more confident team
Southampton fans are serenading their new gaffer with "Mark Hughes' red and white army."
Wigan win an early corner off of Lemina
His previous read and white army lost to L2 opposition his previous match in charge and got them in a horrible position. How did that appear on his CV?
The Rams vs Evil Neil's lads was postponed due to a frozen pitch. Any opinions on that one?
I reckon that Wigan area better Cup side than a league side in L1. I expect Blackburn and Shrewsbury to go up automatically from L1. Wigan will make the playoffs and should win the playoffs. Soton on the other hand should be able to survive relegation. So, my prediction is that Wigan will be playing at Elland Road next season but not the Saints.
Disgraceful that the Baseball Ground, as I like to call it, doesn't have under-soil heating at this point.
Bloody pathetic. The L1 side has two thirds of the possession vs the Prem side and the L1 side looks more like the Prem side.
I think the Baseball Ground was demolished, but Pride Park that is a supposed Prem level stadium should have undersoil heating.
Wigan keeper, Walton spills a Saints free kick, but gathers at the second attempt.
Here's your trivia question for the morning. In his itinerant managerial career, Sparky Hughes has managed the Welsh national team and six club sides. Can you name them all?
Wigan have been top most of the season but have dropped because of this cup run. They have games in hand on the two above them
Blackburn 76 from 37 games
Shrewsbury 74 from 36
Wigan 71 from 34
Will Grigg has a shot deflected for a corner off a long run and pass from Sam Morsy
Will Grigg earns a corner for his side. Wigan seem to have their tails up, roared on by their home crowd.
Blackburn, Stoke, QPR, Southampton, Man City
The Baseball Ground may have been demolished, but not in my mind!
Here goes:
Blackburn, Citeh, Stoke , QPR. Saints, Cottagers
Fulham?
ooh, goes inches wide!
Oh - that deflected effort nearly crept in the corner.
OH!!! Wigan nearly take the lead . A shot was deflec ted then stabbed inches wide.
We both agree with Fulham...must be right
We got em?
Max Power wins another Wigan corner.
I am definitely in the Foxes camp today
Well in, lads. MUR - you are absolutely correct - and almost in the right order! Remarkable effort. Here's his record:
1999-2004 - Wales
2004-2008 - Blackburn
2008-2009 - Citeh
2010-2011 - Fulham
2012 - QPR
2013 - 2018 - Stoke
2018 - Soton
So, here's a bonus question for you - of those six club sides, which did Sparky also play for during his illustrious career?
I agree with UWS that Wigan should be in an automatic promotion spot if they win their games in hand. That would mean the top two would make an instant return to the Championship. The other relegated club, Rotherham is in a playoff spot in fourth. A sign of how much stronger the Championship is than L1?
I'm all Chelsea this morning - I hate this Leicester side of prima donnas.
I thought I remembered him having a really brief spell with Saints around the end of his playing career.
First half chance there for Soton, through Tadic who just couldn't pick out Gabby in the middle.
Wigan should have taken the lead. A cross was headed out then Roberts shot over from close range.
Wigan is looking like the side that eliminated three Prem opponents from this competition while the Saints look like joke that would lose to even L2 Coventry.
Not me... have Chelsea get dumped out!!
Nathan Byrne wins yet another Wigan corner.
Taken short and Roberts wins corner number lucky seven. Saints counter then Wigan
This has been a proper old fashioned cup tie wit both sides trying to win. The Saints just don't look good enough
Are you watching Jose!!!!
I agree - the Saints aren't very good.
Is Jose watching what? This match looks like MLS.
He should be watching Wigan, not the Saints , who look like they're coached by an AYA volunteer. Not sure what exactly their game plan is . Yet to figure that out.
Both teams are about that level.
Ryan Bertrand wins a free kick in a promising position.
Either of you lot want to take a stab at the bonus trivia? Which sides did Sparky both play for and manage?
It's cleared away then put into touch by the Saints, who may think it's a Rugby League match due to the markings on the pitch
I'm going with Blackburn and Saints.
Also Wales.
Oh - Gabby just missed the touch and then Tadic was ruled offside as he put his shot in the side netting. A comedy of errors.
Blackburn and Southampton
The Saints with their best move of the match as TAdic got free down the left and put in a nice pass , but Gabbiadini was just offside and just failed to make contact.
Absolutely correct, MUR - you should take your sideshow on the road, mate?
The Saints best move of the match as Tadic got free down the left and put ia nice pass into the box , but Gabbiadini was just offside and just failed to make contact.
Corner number eight is NOT enough for Wigan
Bertrand seems to be the best outlet for the Saints at the moment.
Cheers, Bob. That may be my next gig once I retire.
Lots of empty seats at the DW . Surprising considering the Cup run, but I think that was a common sight when they were in the Prem.
GET THE SHOT OFF!!!
Makes me depressed
You look at Cup Quarter Finals from the past..... chockablock full!!
Jacobs goes on a nice run then his shot is deflected . Roberts stumbles going for the rebound.Wants a penalty, but that was never going to happen.
No need to yell, UWS.
Sparky looks livid for some reason.
If Wigan win this would be their third semi in six years. Who would have predicted that?
His first halftime talk with the Saints won't be a pleasant one.
Head tennis off the cross from MAssey then headed out for corner number nine by Cedric the Entertainer.
Almost scored from the corner there
In swinging corner...what a novel idea
The corner from Max Power is pushed over by McCarthy for corner number ten
Head tennis off a cross and will Grigg can't make the necessary contact as McCarthy gathers.
My chai is especially tasty this morning.
Kate has just woken up and joined me. Her first comment of the day. "What? Who are these people - Wig and Sot?!" LOL!
Jon Champion stated that nobody in this Wigan side has played a single minute of Prem footie. Yet they have already defeated three of those sides and possible number four.
I suspect that Sparky is a tea cup rattler of the old school. He learned at Fergie's knee. A boot in the eye is a good motivator.
Gary Roberts sends Micahel Jacobs free down the left and Will Grigg can't quite make the contact to put Wigan in the lead.
Half time just as the 45 minute comes up
Refreshing
No stoppage time and it's 0-0 at the half as the L1 side dominated , but really didn't test McCarthy in the Saints goal
LOL. Kate must be wondering what you are typing. Nice choice of beverage.
Back to the DW. The second half is underway.
We're back on at the DW after watching the highlights of the Mo Salah show from yesterday.
Thanks, mate - I rotate back and forth between chai and Lady Grey tea as my cuppa of choice these days. I can't handle coffee anymore, sadly.
Is this a historical match? Will this be the first ever quarterfinal to go to ET and /or penalties?
Back after the second half has started
Missed nowt
Cheers, mate. Sorry to hear that. Not sure what I would do without the morning coffee. Some great choices though
Saints showing more urgency to start the second half.
Wigan win yet another corner on their first attack of the second half.
High and wide from Michael Jacobs from long range after several long crosses were headed out.
Massey wide with a long range effort.
I'm not sure that I'm up for extra time. By the end of this half of regular time, I'll be ready for a sit on the khazi and a shower.
The winner of this match will be the lowest ranked team in the semis.
Southampton are pushing a bit harder and a bit higher so far this half, urging one another up the pitch.
No wonder UWS wants you lot to draw them.
Massey fouls Bou Foul just outside the Wigan box.
I want a Spurs/ Leicester in one semi and United/ who cares in the other
OH!!! Bou Foul nearly scores as the free kick was inches over, skimming the top of the net.
Modern day players have no idea how to attack the ball in the box!!
OH!!! Saints should have taken the lead after Massey was guilty of a horrible back pass then Gabbiadini had hos shot come off of Chris Walton with just the Wigan keeper to beat.
Agreed. No Mata how poorly United play, they should be able to defeat either of these mugs.
Bob missing ET? I can't imagine anyone wanting to miss history in the making!
Somehow, even though you hate the current United side, they're second in the league and in the semi-finals of the Cup.
GOAL
SOUTHAMPTON TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Gabbiadini has a shot blocked by Dunkley for a Saints corner then Chris Walton tips over a free Saints header.
Oh - I won't miss it. Wait a minute....
GOAL! Soton strike first! First goal for Sparky in charge.
THEN GOAL!!!! THE LEAST LIKELY PLAYER TO SCORE PUTS SAINTS IN THE LEAD. HOIJBERG SIDE FOOTS IN FROM THE NEXT CORNER AND IT DEFLECTS OFF A WIGAN PLAYER ON THE LINE.
From the corner, Wigan make a mess of the marking, allowing Højbjerg to sneak in with a half volley finish that flicked off a couple of bodies on its way in.
First Saints goal for Sparky was also the first Saints goal for Hoijberg. The visiting Saints fans , who made the long trip happy on a really chilly day.
Wigan respond immediately by throwing on a couple of forwards. Sparky is also throwing on Nathan Bedford for Boufal.
The first substitution of the Sparky era and it's like for like as Nathan Redmond is on for Boufal. Paul Cook counters by bringing on injured Nick Powell for Gavin Massey.
we may not need ET after all.
I don't care where we are in the league... I want my team to go out and try and win every game!!
They won one FA Cup in the 70s but I loved watching them
They won two FA Cups in the 80 and I loved watching them
They won EVERYTHING in the 90s and 00s and I loved watching them
NOW I am BORED
The teens haven't been as entertaining as the previous decades. Those terrible teens.
I'll swap places with you any day, mate.
Penalty to Soton! Gabby was hacked down by Burn who is now feeling the Burn.
Gabby in the box... penalty to the Saints... they're going to Marching On... to Wembley
PENALTY SAINTS AS GABBIADINI IS FOULED IN THE BOX. WIGAN IS STARTING TO FEEL THE BURN
Roll on the repeat of last season's League Cup Final and the 76 FA Cup Final... different score
oooh.... great save... game still on
Gabby steps up and....saved!
Decent height there for Walton but still a fine save.
WOW!!! CHRIS WALTON SAVES THE PENALTY FROM GABBIADINI AND IT'S OUT FOR A CORNER.
The corner is out by Jacobs for another.
Wigan still in this tie and Burn booked for the foul in the box.
Saints win another corner.
Dunkley gets in front of Carrillo to head the near post in swinger out for another Saints corner. The next one from Tadic is straight to the first man
Michael Jacobs wins a corner off of Wes Hoedt
Quarter of an hour for the Latics to get level
A scramble in the box off the corner and the Saints eventually clear it away
Wigan could still get back into this one.
A naughty challenge by Ryan Bertrand.
According to the away fans, people from the north of England are "dirty bastards." Hmmm...
Noel Hunt on for Nathan Byrne. He becomes the only Wigan player on the pitch with any Prem experience.
The forgotten striker Shane Long going on for Carrillo now.
Sparky counters by replacing Carrillo with Shane Long. Both managers playing with an extra striker. Great to see.
Who did Noel Hunt play for in the Prem, mate?
They just said Reading
Played for Pompey too
There have always been those bitter regional rivalries in Blighty
He must have played for Pompey last season with Paul Cook.
actually , Nick Powell has some really brief Prem experience as well. UWS may remember that
Dunkley booked for grabbing Shane Long by the shirt.
Chris Walton with a close range block, but Shane Long was flagged offside.
He was so good for Crewe in the play off final at Wembley
Came to United...never played... under 20 games... played up front which made no sense
Cheers, lads - I must have dozed off. No coffee, don't you know.
Wigan seem to have run out of ideas, but they can be proud of this cup run and focus on promotion back to the Championship.
Romeu comes on for Gabby to shore things up for Sparky.
The final roll of the dice from Sparky and it's to hold on to the slim lead as holding middie, Romeu , is on for Gabbiadini, a striker.
That leaves Shane Long as the lone Saints striker.
Well done, Bob. Agreed, UWS. He was a disappointment after being promoted as the next United superstar.
Oh - Hunt nearly snuck in there. Difficulty skill to master on the full volley. Didn't get it right.
OH!!! Hoedt heads off the line from Noel Hunt off a run and cross from Nick Powell into a quartet of stoppage time minutes.
Saints break.... and are going to Wembley!!
I am off for walkies!!!
I'll be back for the late one
GOAL! Cedric finishes off Wigan on the break.
0-2!
Enjoy your walkies, mate!
GOAL !!!DONE AND DUSTED AS THE SAINTS COUNTER OFF THE WIGAN CORNER. REDMOND PUTS THROUGH CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER DOWN THE LEFT . HE RAN PAST THE TIRED ELDER AND DID WELL TO PLACE A SHOT NI THE CORNER PAST WALTON. SAINTS TWO UP INTO STOPPAGE TIME.
And the Saints away fans are enjoying a bit of a Doris Day sing along now.
Agreed. Enjoy walkies. An hour till the next match!
The Saints scored one goal from their corner and one off a Wigan corner.
That's it - Soton are heading to Wembley and Sparky's knees are all a trembly over the thought of it. Next up, United?
it's over and Wigan's cup run comes to an end as the Saints win 0-2 at the DW. They enjoy my United and Sunshine's Spuds in the semis.
If the Foxes win and meet the Saints. It would be against a Saints team Claude Puel took to Wmebley and then was sacked shortly after that
I'm back from a refreshing shower to watch the late one.
Back for the late match after walkies with Sparky ans a couple of trips to the bog.
Welcome back. Sounds like we're match fit for the late match and the draw for the semis.
Despite their excellent recent record, The FA Cup has not always been Chelski's highest priority, but this year is different: out of Europe, never in the running for the league title and five points away from the top four, this is a chance to give a clouded season a silver lining.
I don't know about match fit but I am squeaky clean.
Will it be a double elimination for Chelsea this week after being eliminated from the CL or will they emulate United and overcome that?
The teams now gathering in the tunnel at Filbert Street, as I like to call it:
Leicester: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Maguire, Chilwell, Mahrez, Iborra, Ndidi, Albrighton, Iheanacho, Vardy. Subs: Gray, Hamer, Adrien Silva, Dragovic, Okazaki, Fuchs, Diabate.
Chelsea: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Moses, Kante, Bakayoko, Alonso, Willian, Hazard, Morata. Subs: Fabregas, Pedro, Giroud, Zappacosta, Cahill, Emerson, Eduardo.
Referee: Craig Pawson.
Apparently Leicester think it's fox hunting time - LOL!
Sounds like you're ready to go either way
LOL! I was wondering if they were sounding for the hunt.
This should be the most even natch of the round. Interested to see what transpires.
The final quarterfinal is off on a rather chilly afternoon. Martin Tyler and Stuart Robson on the mics.
A hot cuppa tea would be perfect on a rather chilly teatime kickoff.
Oh - early chance there for Albrighton. Just wide of the mark.
OH!!! Marc Albrighton nearly gives the Foxes the lead.A cross from Danny Simpson fizzed across the box and was half volleyed just wide of Willy Cabs, who felt like a passenger.
Then Victor Moses wins a corner off of Albrighton.
Early corner for Chelski is cleared out.
Taken short by Moses then the cross is headed out.
Is Antonio Conte ready for a Fox hunt. He acts as if he's involved with a witch hunt.
Bit of miscommunication there between Morata and Hazard there. Morata seems really off the boil these days.
They were speculating before the match about Conte leaving Chelski in the summer. Certainly a lot of the big clubs will be looking at the managers involved in the World Cup for possible hires.
It seems as if Conte is headed to PSG with Neymar, JR. headed to real for a real huge transfer fee.
Danny Simpson wins a corner on a possession that startd with the high press.
