When we were kids, a winter storm like this would have knocked out virtually all of the football league schedule. Fortunately, will under soil heating and modern groundskeeping technology today, both of these rather intriguing fixtures are on for today. We start with Arsenal's trip to Brighton. Having suffered back to back 3-0 losses to Citeh this week, Arsenal need a tonic, and lowly Brighton might provide that. Later, it's a big clash between Citeh and Chelski at the Etihad. It's first v. third - how much bigger can you get. So, pour yourself a cuppa and join me from 8:30am onward.

Good morning, Bob. The hot cuppa is about ready on a foggy South Texas morning.
Morning, MUR. I fear that I just nipped ahead of you with the post. Should I delete this one and pop over onto your thread?
Morning Bob and David
Hope to be a better contributor today
Was that sign meant for us?
I think it probably was. LOL!
Morning, UWS - how are you, mate?
Good morning , Dave. I'm sure you will be an excellent contributor today.
I only saw this post
Here are the teams now out on the pitch at the Amex:
Brighton & Hove Albion: Ryan; Schelotto, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert, Stephens, Propper, Izquierdo; Gross; Murray. Subs: Krul, Goldson, Bruno, Kayal, March, Ulloa, Locadia.
Arsenal: Cech; Chambers, Mustafi, Koscielny, Kolasinac; Xhaka, Wilshere; Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Iwobi; Aubameyang. Subs: Ospina, Bellerin, Holding, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Welbeck, Nketiah.
Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicester)
Brighton get us underway at the Amex. Not sure why Arsenal had to wear a black away kit today - does red and white really clash with blue and white stripes?
Early corner earned by Aubama.
The match is underway from the AMEX and the Gunners win an early corner that is cleared
Miki's corner comes to nowt.
Why oh why aren't Arsenal wearing RED. The last time I looked.... Red doesn't clash with Blue
Didn't read your comment before I posted mine!
This fixture was played when we were at LHS and both teams always wore their traditional kits even though Brighton's changed during my while I was at LHS
Ozil curls one not too far high and wide.
Beaker tries a shot now - well over, but this is a good start for Arsenal.
Does anyone remember Brighton's kit change while we were at LHS?
Great minds think alike, UWS!
Brighton used to wear the blue and white stripes but when they played United in the '83 Cup Final their kits were all blue that season
Got that right BD
I don't, but I'll bet you've got that bit of trivia in your head, mate.
Did I answer your question without even knowing what the question was?
Nearly an OG by Lewis dunk, who has already Dunked in four!
Crikey - that could easily have been an own goal off Dunk. Apparently he's scored four o.g. already this season!
Schelotto wins a corner on the Seagulls first attack.
ONE NIL SEAGULLS!!!
First corner for the Seagulls now. And....
GOAL! He nearly scored one at his own end and now he's opened the scoring for Brighton!
Look what happens when you put in a dangerous corner!!!!
WHO DA THUNK IT
GOAL !!!! WOW LEWIS DUNK SCORES AT THE RIGHT HAND AFTER DISASTEROUS DEFENDING FROM THE CORNER. AN UNUSUAL ERROR FROM CECH , MISJUDGING THE CORNER AND EASILY ALLOWED LEWIS DUNK TO SCORE OFF THE CORNER. WHY DID HE HAVE A FREE HEADER
They've won another corner
Really poor defending there from the Arsenal. Nowhere near either the first ball in or the knock on to Dunk. One of probably two or three Brighton players were open and could have scored. That won't brighten Arsenal's mood one bit.
1-0 Brighton!
The Seagulls win another corner.
Bloody hell... you score from a corner.....next one... the play it short!!
Teams think too much
The corner was really dunked it. The corner taker must have thought it was a real knockout
Oh - Gross pulls a good save out of Cech. Brighton scent some blood in the water right now.
Izquierdo cuts in and Cech pushes around a shot from Gross.
A third corner... cleared but dangerous..they almost score from the following play
Arsenal's defense are all over the shop right now. Sixes and sevens. Whatever metaphor you want to use.
Propper has a cross cleared. Wenger may want to sign him because he doesn't have a defender that fits that description,.
When was the last time that Arsenal didn't qualify for Europe?
I still think they are safe for Europe
They have a big lead over Burnley
With all this action , I never got to discuss the kit change. When the Seagulls were promoted in 1979 they wore a kit similar to this. Around 1980 or 1981 they changed to an all blue kit similar to what Chelsea wears , but not quite as dark. Do you all remember that?
Someone needs to loan Schelotto a rubber band for his hair. I'm sure that it's impeding his vision.
I agree with Dave. Not sure when they last failed to qualify. Even between Graham and Wenger they still managed to qualify
I answered that kit question... before it was asked
He did win the corner that led to the goal and is probably doing better than many of the Gunners
That's assuming that sixth will qualify for the EL, but will it? They're well behind the pace to catch Chelski in fifth.
I think you answered a different question than the historical trivia I just mentioned. It's a supplement to your question.Did you all remember Brighton doing away with the stripes?
When I spoke with Gooner on Friday, he was not at all confident about winning the Europa League this season. He reckons that they can't get beyond AC Milan in the next round, given their recent form.
Sixth will qualify because Citeh won the League Cup. Seventh is not definite.
I said that at least during the 83 season they were all blue
Izquierdo tries a rocket but Mustafi is able to scamper back and block it out for a corner.
That will be a tough challenge. I didn't expect Milan to do this well back in August and given most Serie A clubs record in recent European competitions.
I wasn't too confident about United winning it last year
Jose gave up on the League... and they could have and should have pipped City to Fourth
Another corner won
Another free header for Dunk! Puts it over this time, mistiming the jump.
I think they changed in 1981 because they had been wearing it for a couple seasons prior to that Cup Final. Not sure when they switched back
ooh, Cech with a decent save
Gross incompetence in the Gunners defense as he lays it on a plate and but for Cech it would have been a Knockaert for the Gunners
Another question. What is so significant about this match to Seagulls fans?
Looking at the bottom of the table, it's very tight. WBA are done, of course. But given that Stoke and Palace have so many points (27) at present, everyone from Brighton in 12th on 31 down to Soton in 17th on 28 points could be dragged back into the relegation zone.
I am getting credit for my answer!!
Just like Southampton a few years back stopped wearing stripes and went to all red!
Bong wins a corner against a team playing as if they just smoked a bong.
Another corner... another corner won... headed over
WHY DON'T TEAMS TAKE NORMAL CORNERS ANY MORE!!
Look how dangerous they are
A free header off a corner taken by Gross and headed over by Duffy.
No answer to my question posted at 8:51. It's not a pun or joke. AN actual trivia question.
United don't play Arsenal at Old Trafford until April 29th... wish it was now!!
Is that close to to a EL match?
It will be if the Gunners are still left in that competition. I think it's in between the quarters and semis.
TWO NIL!!!!
RUDDY NORAH
GOAL !!!! OH MY GIDDY AUNT AS GLENN MURRAY PUTS THE SEAGULLS TWO UP.
GOAL! Bloody hell - Glen Murray adds to the Arsenal gloom.
They probably won't get there but that United/Arsenal match comes in between the two legs of the EL semi final
Two Arsenal defenders in the box there and neither was marking up Murray - they were both ball watching.
Frustration boiling over now among the Arsenal backline. Kolasinac talks himself into the book after Koz fouls Murray.
The Gunners poor in possession as they gave the ball away . It was played wide to Gross and he put in a great cross for Murray to head in
MUR - not sure what's so significant about this match to Seagulls fans.
Why has Kolasinac shown more commitment on winning an argument than defending. Doesn't that sum it up?
Petr Cech was really poor on that goal, too. The header went right under him. Should have been an easy save. Has his career come to an end?
The home fans are taunting now with "We want you to stay...we want you to stay - Arsene Wenger...we want you to stay" to the tune of "Sloop John B." Ouch!
I will be happy to answer that question. The Seagulls fist ever top flight match was vs the Gunners at the old Goldstone Ground. It didn't go well as they were three down at the half and lost 0-4. They did recover to survive.
Dunno
What year was that?
Cech is having an off day, but it is hard to blame him for the other losses. His defenders have been really poor.
Aubama wins a corer off of Bong
It was back in '79. Does anyone remember the famous halftime talk Alan Mullery gave?
Agreed - the defense has exposed Cech, but that Glenn Murray header would be a routine save for most keeper. It was right at him!
No
1979, eh? That was our era. I'm surprised that I don't remember that at all.
Some "Wenger Out" banners being unfurled in the away end now. That won't help morale.
I heard that Wenger has maxed out his American Express Card , but he still got an increase on his credit limit.
Arsenal sounds like United!!
From the Beeb
Brighton 2-0 Arsenal
Brighton have had nine shots on goal so far, five of those on target.
Arsenal, meanwhile have had two - both off target.
Some Arsenal legends up in the stands today - they won't be pleased with proceedings.
Is the Wenger's fault?
Aren't the players playing like crap?
Quite a fact
Is there hope for Arsenal? They haven't come back from two-goals down to win a Premier League away game since March 2008 at Bolton.
At halftime the Seagulls were three down and Mullery told his players that they had already lost the match, so go when the next match in the second half. They only conceded one in the second half and played much better in the second half and the rest of the season. I guess that's a successful halftime speech.
This group of players won't come from two down. I would be really surprised.
Not sure why Larry Kos is the captain. Mustafi and Cech seem to be the leaders on the pitch. Why not give one of them the captain's armband.
It sounds like it, definitely. Is Alan Mullery still with us?
Just had some breakie made...lovely jubbly
Wilshire in the book
Wilshere gets a yellow card for a nasty one there.
Wilshere booked for trying to Knockaert a Seagulls player.
Bloody hell - Brighton try a training pitch routine from the free kick and Arsenal get lucky with a mistaken offside call. That could so easily have been three!
The Seagulls take a quick free kick and the Gunners caught out as Yzquierdo shoot s just wide with just Cech to beat. The offside flag was raised, but he looked on.
What's for brekkies, mate?
Yes. Mullery still is, but he looks more like Neville Southall these days.
Kate's just woken up after a lie in to recover from her heroics for Fulham yesterday. She's making oatmeal right now. Lovely on a wintry morning.
Fried egg on English muffin
Goal
Arsenal score out of the blue
GOAL !!!AUBAMA PULLS ONE BACK FOR THE GUNNERS
GOAL! Aubama nicks a goal back for the Gunners! Is that his first goal for them?
Dangerous cross
Great time to score
Could Arsenal win this
Iwobi laid a pass off to Xakha Khan and his nice pass was dinked in by Aubama.
I'm having my usual, which is a bow of high protein Special K, on a muggy, foggy morning
Nice team goal, that. Iwobi got to the by-line, pulled it back for Xhaka Khan who played a nice ball in to the new boy who flicked it in cheekily.
A pair of stoppage time minutes.
Two added minutes
Could the Arsenal tie it up
It only takes a second to score
Off the post!!!
Oh - that was a great corner in from Miki! Could have been Desmond!
Kolasinac wins a corner off of Schelotto. The corner was not properly cleared then Miki crosses again as Kos has a header crash off the post. Then Schelotto slices clear for another corner.
From total despair, Arsenal are right back in this one. What an absorbing match. And so well poised for the second half.
Arsenal with a corner... collected by the keeper at the second time of asking
The lead should be safe for half time
There is the whistle
It was looking a lot better five minutes ago for the Gulls
The Seagulls lead 2-1 at the half. A poor first half from the Gunners , but they showed improvement the last few minutes. Should be an interesting second half.
Second half about to get underway
What did Arsene say?
The second half is underway. Gunners came out a minute before the Seagulls.
I doubt whether Arsene is a tea-cup rattler. He just probably has a quiet word with a few players.
Not sure. A Was the speech inspirational?
Ozil carries the ball 30 yards, then rolls a visionary’s pass straight to Schelotto.
I can see Arsenal winning this one
Of course, next goal is vital
I just saw a Seagull flying above the players.
The Gunners haven't come from two down to win in a decade. Do these players have that type of motivation?
Miki has a go. Smothered by the keeper.
I know, I'm the one that posted that fact, but if they score next... they will win
You sound just like a commentator, UWS.
Jack Wilshere is playing more Jackanory. Sound about right?
Commentator's curse?
Is he telling a story, MUR?
Probably so. He's definitely an expert . He should write some football stories. A murder/ mystery and a comedy would do nicely.
Xakha Khan is booked. There's a real shocker. More bookings than tackles this season.
Cech forced to tip over what looked a miss hit cross from Schelotto.
The corner from Gross was headed out and the volley was nearly a knockaert of the stadium
Matty Ryan with an easy save from Iwobi.
Ozil with a decent effort well saved
Matty Ryan forced to turn around a long range effort from Ozil.
Great save there by Matty Ryan. Arsenal knocking on the door.
Xhaka Khan goes down in the box appealing for a penalty. Nothing doing from his Friend.
Xakha Khan more like Aerosmith and Steven Tyler, going down. Definitely not a pen.
Not sure that there was any contact there - should have been booked.
Oh - Arsenal nearly in again there. Matty Ryan was nowhere.
Does anyone have a vacation coming up soon? our students go on Spring Break on Friday, which is a teacher workday I will be on vacation next week.
Dale Stephens booked for a foul on Wilshere , which wasn't even a foul.
What an atrocious free kick there!!
Into the wall by Xakha Khan then the Seagulls head out for another corner.
Shadow is at me to take him for a walk!!
Trying to talk him out of it
The corner from Miki is headed straight up into the air by Mustafi and straight to Matty Ryan
Yeah - we're heading into Spring Break next weekend. Kate and I will be driving down to Alex to celebrate Eric's 26th birthday (gulp!).
Same with Sparky. His is due to the medication he is taking.
Sounds like we have the same Spring Break. Send my best to Eric and family.
Schelotto booked for a foul on Xakha Khan . That was a deserved booking
Nope, my next break is the week after Easter
That is an early Spring Break !
We usually have near the end of April off
It is going to be a long end of the year
I agree with Bob that Xakha Khan should have been booked for diving to try and win a pen. That would have been a second yellow and down to ten for the Gunners
Brighton players are really upset
Is that going to be a red?
Kevin Friend has a decision to make, now. Kolasinac is on a yellow card already. Now he's clattered Schelotto.
Now the Gunners may be down to ten after a nasty challenge by Kolasinac on Schelotto.
The bloke gets up just as the stretcher arrives
Nice timing!!
If he gets away with it then the ref is permitting players to foul at will.
Ref hasn't done anything yet
The Italian is still on the deck
Arsene would do well to sub Kolasinac is he doesn't get his marching orders.
Long delay here while Schelotto is getting treatment. Kolasinac has so far escaped any punishment.
Looks like nothing is going to happen
This is going to have a lot of time added
The clock should be stopped!
Looks ike Bruno will be on for Schelotto.
Kolasinac apologizes, but probably so he can avoid red.
That was nasty... that should be a straight red... not just a yellow!!
He gets nothing
I guess the ref has decided to let the players foul each other the remainder of the match. The Gunners lucky not to be down to nine.
Can't believe nothing was done!
The ref should give himself a red.
Yzquierdo cuts inside like TH 14 did then shoots just wide.
An extraordinary decisions by Kevin Friend.
In addition to Spring Break I have a four day weekend during Easter. Off Friday March 30th and Monday April 2nd.
Since the ref didn't give a card, could it be a retroactive red?
Now Staurt Atwell lets Wilshere get away with a foul throw. He's having a real mare.
Murray has a break... puts the breaks on!
Knew he couldn't make it
Iwobi is tackled and Murray doesn't have the pace to make it through for a shot. What a shame.
Glenn Murray was away there but he was running through treacle. Makes me feel better about my physical state.
Wellie on for Iwobi
Welly coming on for Iwobi... 16 minutes plus added time
Solly March living up to his name as he's about to come on in March
Murray gets the ball again and goes backwards again!
He's knackered cream crackered Cary Packer
Packered!
It is not Murray coming off
It's A Knock Out
He's not happy about it
It's a Knockaert as Solly March is marched on in March . AM I correct?
Knockaert coming off and March coming on for Brighton.
He's having a hissy fit on the 'bench'... more like an airline seat
It is good that March is getting a game in March
He wasn't Knockaered out about that decision.
Beat me to it MUR
You stole my joke. The wording may be slightly different , but I started that idea.
The March hare goes haring down the wing. His fresh legs will bother Kolisinac who surely is on his last life in this match.
Cheers, Dave. I couldn't resist.
Miki has a shot deflected for a corner.
