Time for the Turnaround
It's been a rotten year so far for my beloved Leeds United. But every match brings the promise of a turnaround. This afternoon, we head to Bristol City, who are very much in the thick of the playoff race. It'll be a tough lift for us, but I hope that we can get a result for the new gaffer Paul Heckingbottom. Come on, you Whites (or whatever color we're playing in today)!
Oh - and Spurs face Rochdale in the Cup....
288 Comments:
I slept in through the early one in the Championship, where Norwich and Ipswich shared a goal a piece in the East Anglian derby.
Going into this afternoon's match, Leeds are 13th on 44 points from 31 matches. Bristol City are in that last playoff spot. A win for us would catapult us back up to 10th.
Good morning, Bob. It was great to sleep in. Went to bed early and woke up late, so I'm really well rested. How about you?
Fred says that the match is at ER. Fred says the Black Cats played at Ashton Gate last weekend in that incredible comeback.
I'm feeling really well rested, too. Hope the lads are as well.
How do you feel about the draw for United against Brighton in the quarters?
First up, it's the most romantic tie of the FA Cup 5th Round. It has a bit of everything, this, doesn’t it? Rochdale, bottom of League One, take on a Spurs team that is absolutely flying. There’s been some hustle and bustle about the pitch at Spotland, freshly relaid as it happens, but we’re all set now and Tottenham cannot say they haven’t been warned in their cup run so far.
The teams gathering in the tunnel at Rochdale:
Rochdale: Lillis, Rafferty, McNulty, McGahey, Humphrys, Camps, Done, Delaney, Cannon, Kitching, Henderson. Subs: Ntlhe, Rathbone, Thompson, Inman, Davies, Moore, Adshead.
Tottenham: Vorm, Trippier, Alderweireld, Foyth, Rose, Wanyama, Winks, Sissoko, Lucas, Son, Llorente. Subs: Gazzaniga, Sanchez, Walker-Peters, Dier, Alli, Lamela, Kane.
Not surprisingly, HK is safely on the bench today. Fernando Llorente leads the line. Honestly, if it were up to me, I'd wrap HK in cotton wool until the World Cup starts.
Lucas Moura makes his Tottenham debut - I'll bet he never dreamed that it would be at Spotland, though. LOL!
Two notable names on Rochdale’s bench. Joe Thompson has recovered from cancer twice; his is a remarkable achievement to be back here today and it would be wonderful to see him come on. Daniel Adshead is just 16, and still at school.
LOL, Indeed. Rochdale is reality check for anyone new to the English game. If you want to know anything about old -fashioned Britain then Rochdale is the place to be.
Teams on the pitch at Spotland. The pitch is in decent condition.
They're off from Spotland.
Sorry. The Crown Oil Arena. That sounds a tad evil!
So off we go at Spotland in this last FA Cup 5th Round fixture of the weekend.
The match at ER kicks off in a half hour.
Wigan vs Citeh tomorrow, a repeat of the 2013 Final, could be interesting.
All the noise is coming from the Spurs away supporters end.
I'm right on it, mate. As always, I'm hopeful that this will be the start of the turnaround.
First test for the Rochdale defense as Lucas Mora showed some trickery. Nice crossfield pass to Number One Son, but tackled as he was about to shoot.
Clumsy as usual by Wanyama. Concedes a stupid free kick.
The winners of this tie get a quarter final against either Swansea or Not a Big Club.
That was wasted. Rochdale's best chances will come from set pieces, so they will need to do better than that.
To answer your question, I'm happy with the draw. It's a repeat of the 1983 Cup Final.
Lucas Mora goes on a solo run and picks up a cheap free kick
This pitch is in much better condition than Rodney Parade, the Rodney Dangerfield of pitches!
The Spuds game plan is to ware down Rochdale . They're hanging on , so expect goals in the second half.
The pitch looks fast and a bit slippery, but it’s the same for both. Decent start for the Dale.
That looked like a promising move for the Spuds until the Llorente Express was guilty of poor ball control. Could have been the lead.
Then a long teasing cross is headed out by Trippier for a Rochdale corner.
Mora hard to dispossess then fouled by Delaney
Toby heads the free kick straight to Josh Lillis in the Rochdale goal.
Appeals for a Rochdale penalty as Toby fell. Was it hand ball? I think the L1 side have a case.
Camps called for a hand ball off a clearance from Wanyama . That was less a hand ball than the spot kick decision
I do, too, mate - Spurs got a break there from Bobby Madeley.
Agricultural by Delaney on Harry Winks. Just a lecture from Bobby Madley.
Henderson straight at Worm as Wanyama coughed up possession deep in the Spuds half.
Oh - Henderson burst into the area and got a shot off eventually. Straight into Vorm's arms, sadly. The Dale giving it a go, though.
Number One Son has a shot blocked for a corner as he got a long ball and turned a defender.
Waiting for the link to load for that other match.
WOW!! Josh Lillis does well to block from Number One Son. The SPuds kept possession., Then LLorente tried to get the perfect shot half and ended up shooting wide through a sea of blue Jerseys. Should have scored.
Teams in the tunnel at ER
Teams coming out at Elland Road now - come on, you Whites!
MOT!
Vernon Anita Caleb Ekuban , and Pablo Hernandez inserted into the strting lineup for Leeds.
The Leeds starting XI:
Wiedwaldl, Anita, Pennington, Jansson, De Bock, O'Kane, Forshaw, Dallas, Pablo, Ekuban, Big PML
BAiley Wright the Captain and Aussie international moves ti right back for Bristol City. Is it Right for Wright to move to right back, Bob?
They're off from ER
MOT!
HI Boys,
I am here for a bit before we go off the the NYS Museum
Ipswich scored an 89th "winner" and then Norwich tied it up in the MADE UP FIVE added minutes
Both of them jump above Leeds and they kick off against Bristols.. not a result... just a bit of gossip!!
OH!!! Henderson beat the offside trap and shot wide with just Worm to beat. it was thanks to a slip from young Foyth and winning the ball off a Spuds long throw.,
Morning, UWS - excellent timing. How are you, mate?
Henderson is proving a nuisance to the makeshift Spurs backline.
Good morning, UWS> It was an incredible finish at CR. Mick was seconds away from his first win in the Old Farm Derby and the Tractor Boys first win at CR since 2006!
Good sharp passing from the off from us - I'm hopeful.
Lucas Mora, to his credit looks to be taking this match seriously unlike many of his foreign counterparts.
Lucas Mora goes on a sol run and wins a corner./
Some great Fielding from the visiting keeper as he does well to push away a shot from Dallas
Dallas produces a good save out of BC keeper Fielding. Nice attack there from us.
Boom boom, mate! Nice one.
Jansson clears for the first corner of the match. Goes to the visitors.
Bristol City employing the tedious long throw strategy this afternoon.
Taken short and Wiedwald fouled as the cross was put in the Leeds box.
Cheers, Bob. Anything to provide cheer for a match at ER!
Again the added minutes come into play
I was so against having a clock that tells you how much is left but I have changed my mind. I didn't like in college the clock showed we had no chance when the ball was in the wrong half with 5 seconds left. I have tried to think about what can be done. The clock shouldn't stop when the ball goes out of play but if a team takes an age get it in threaten and then stop the clock. A man goes down and physio has to come on, stop the clock. A substitution, stop the clock. All those moronic substitutions would end!. I was even thinking about taking a book from rugby. After the time is up, they keep playing until the ball goes out of play. The team winning gets the ball and just kicks it out and it is done. Football could do that.
10 minutes in at Elland Road... Leeds still have 11 on the field!!
The Spuds as they have this half putting together too many passes and not able to get a shot off.
LOL! Nice one, UWS!
One nil Bristol City.. from a long throw!!
They are dangerous!!
Horrendous goalkeeping
BUGGER!!! THE LONG THROW WORKS TO EFFECT FOR BRISTOL CITY NAGNUSSON STARTED IT , WIEDWALD MISSED IT AND DEHEDIOU BASICALLY PAST IT INTO THE BACK OF THE NET.
BUGGER! A real howler from Wiedwald and Jesju buries it. Whites 0-1 down.
Wide open inside the six!
Sorry Bob. Magnusson started it and Dehediou finished it. Again , sorry.
you guys just poo-poo my idea?
Spurs are trying to pass to much.. I agree with you MUR
OMG... ONE NIL DALE!!!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! HENDERSON GIVES L1 BOTTOM CLUB THE LEAD VS THE MIGHTY SPUDS.
Of course, FOX have the crowd sound muted
Into stoppage time.
Amazing! FA Cup romance lives on! Wish we could get some at ER.
They also cut off the commentator the split second the whistle blows
Harry Winks tackled in midfield and a couple of Winks later, Dale have the lead . Hendo picked and level with e last defender as he did well to finish past Worm.
As to the long throw strategy, it's only dangerous if you're totally unprepared.
And there it is again. 0-2 down. Bloody horrible.
GORDON BENNETT
Two nil... from another long throw!!
You have a guy that could win a header it is hard to stop
BLOODY HELL!!!! KYLE REID PUTS BRISTOL CITY TWO UP AS LEEDS UNDONE BY THE LONG THROW AGAIN. TAKEN BY MARLON PACK .
Sorry, Bob. The long throw seems to have a place in the game as the red team have shown us.
Rochdale one up at the half. Will the Spuds be able to come back as they did in South Wales?
Kyle Reid has a long range effort by Jannsson blocked for a corner.
I wrote a novel and you both never commented
I'm about to stick my head in the oven.
Doesn't matter... it's electric!!
Don't you think the added time is getting out of hand?
Decent cross...no one there to meet it!!
I've just caught up with it, mate. I'm a traditionalist. I like a clock that ticks up and the mystery of not knowing exactly when a ref is going to blow the whistle.
OH!!! Great move as AdamForshaw found Vernon Anita down the right, who passed to Hernandez, and a great pass was put in to the box, but a whit e shirt was not there to divert it in.
I do too but don't you think it is getting ridiculous
City or United need a goal and SIX minutes are added!
Sorry. I got started then a flurry of goals and action happened. Was that about the match I texted about a couple of hours ago or am I guilty of idle gossip?
I wanted Bristol City to do well.. they could be #50 of the Premier League
They have fallen since their win against United
If we just keeping trying to play, maybe we can get back into this one. It's clear that all that Bristol City have is the long throw. They're rubbish otherwise.
About the East Anglian derby and TOO many other games
Get off the damn Budesliga FOX. We are here of the Cup
Of course there is always going to be controversy about stoppage time, but that's all part of the game. It doesn't need to be black and white.
I can't believe that we're going to have to watch Fox all summer long. They're hopeless.
I just read the comment. More an article than a novel, but I agree 100%. Something needs to be done , so why not try that. Great idea from the museum of Football and Thoughts!
The advantage of ESPN 3 is that I got to sleep in late and watched the replay of the last seven minutes of the match. It's great to feel well rested on a five day weekend. A little mini vacation then two and a half weeks before Spring Break.
I just thought about the rugby link last week. I saw the 80 minute go up and they kept playing but as soon as England got the ball, the kicked it out of play and it was over
Football could do that
The time wasting for injuries and substitutions would stop. Teams could have as much time to score as they want as long as they keep possession. If there is a foul called for the team defending.. kick the ball out.. final whistle
The reunion will still make it worth the while despite the jerks from Fox. You can always watch on Telemundo. Just saying.
Teams out for the second half
Spurs will still win
There will be an all Premier League final eight
Wonder if that has happened much
Teams heading out of the tunnel in Rochdale.
Rochdale and Spurs back on now. I suppose I should count myself lucky that my side isn't losing to the bottom of the Football League club this afternoon. What an embarrassment!
What reunion?
The second half is underway from the Crown Oil Arena.
The one Bob mentioned on the LOB in midweek.
I could go for that change, UWS.
I posted a thread about planning for the World Cup last Monday, mate. Just wanted to get people thinking about June.
At the Crown Oil Arena, the Spuds have played like Olive Oil and Rochdale more like Popeye. During halftime Mo PO wasp robably like Bluto!
The ER crowd is still cheering on the boys - and they will do 'til the death.
My last day of school is June 2nd. I have an idea . How about a package that includes the quarters , semis , Third Place match , and Final. That would start right after the Fourth of July holiday and would help with people's travel plans. Any thoughts?
We finally defended a long throw properly. It's about time.
Did you ever watch that link I texted you guys about the 91-92 season and the forming of the PL. Too much bloody Leeds United winning the title for my liking
Interesting tho
That's what I was thinking, too, mate. The quarterfinal weekend looks especially tempting.
Great save by Wiedwald from Kent then cleared for a Bristol City corner.
Decent save
Good save by Wiedwald. Hopefully that will rebuild his confidence.
Where?
I haven't watched the link , but I will.
The location is TBA. How about Harlingen . Nice and warm in the Summer.
Would Rochdale want the win and play Sheff Wed/Swansea or get a draw and play at Wembley in front of 38,000?
It's warm everywhere
Isn't it too warm?
I am not sure if I have family visiting during the summer?
That's for the invitation, mate. We'll definitely continue to kick this around.
When do you finish school, UWS?
Free kick to Bristol City . They eventually win a corner.
June 22
Coming here for the opener?
Rochdale now have 35 minutes left to gut out an improbable win.
My pleasure. I'm willing to host , but am open to other options as well. It's important to have an open mind.
Had it in DC before, right?
Blimey - that's a late end to proceedings. Thanks for the offer. I would want to nail it down for sure this time. I don't want to disappoint again as with the beginning of the season. But I'd love to. It's a tradition.
Wild challenges there by the Leeds man... they don't have to have a man sent off every game!!
Just a yellow for Pennington
Rochdale's last win against top flight opposition in the Cup was 1971 vs Coventry, who were the lowest ranked left in this round this year. The SPuds last loss to lower division opposition was 1988 vs Port Vale, a year after losing to Coventry in the Final.
Yeah - we've done it at my brother's house before. He's likely out of commission this summer as he's working out of his home office now and they're doing renovations this summer. He might be able to travel to TX though.
Spurs only have 30 minutes to get something
An atrocious free kick by an English international
Mora scores for the Spurs
GOAL !!!! Lucas Mora ties it up on his spuds debut. A pair of stoppage time minutes at ER!
GOAL! Spurs level it through the debutante Lucas Moura.
Maybe NYS
There are two of us here!
Maybe here!
My boys would love it too
I'm not enjoyed this first half one bit. Blow up ref!
Again, not sure about family visits
Cometh the hour cometh the goal from the debutant
That would work for me, too.
Bristol City two up at the half thanks to a pair of long throws.
Boos ring out around the Elland Road ground. That doesn't happen very often. Not happy. 0-2 down.
Boos around ER
Why can't they sort things out at ER
It is the biggest city in the UK with only one team
Lamela on for Harry Winks.
Toby booked for the Spuds.
As much as we did not want the Spuds to score, credit for a well worked goal. A long Spuds clearance resulted in a bout of head tennis . The influential Lucas Mora picked up the ball in midfield ,passed to Llorente, who passed to Sissy. He played a slide rule pass behind the "Dale and Lucas Mora finished well past the stranded Josh Lillis.
Trippier trips a Rochdale player just outside the Spuds box. Clumsy for a Premier League player.
Camps takes and it's not too far wide of the near post , but Worm had it covered had it been on target.
Danny Rose wins a Spuds corner off a long possession.
Delle Alli on for Lucas Mora. Will he deliver the knockout punch?
The corner is headed on and Wanyama , showing that he's not striker as he he side foots a volley well over three yards from goal.
Danny Rose is fouled by Rafferty near the touchline as he rushed to keep the ball in play.
Josh Lillis punches away the in swinger from Trippier.
Delle Alli nut megs a defender then has a shot blocked that comes off him last for a goal kick.
Steven Davis on for Humphrys , who put in a great shift.,
Harry Kane NOT being rested as Mo Po realizes that he has to win this one.
Harry Kane on for the Llorente Express, who did not positively Express himself.
HK coming on for the last 15 minutes at Rochdale.
Harry Kane wins a free kick just outside the box seconds later.
Second half at ER starting up. I'm fairly fed up with it. We'll need to score early to improve my mood.
Second half underway at ER as the free kick from Trippier went into the wall.
MOT!
COME ON YOU WHITES! THE ONE'S AT ER!
dANNY rOSE WINS A CORNER.
Decent shooting chance there for Pablo after a nice move that he started. Blocked out.
Foyth has a header tipped over off the corner from Lamela , but Bobby Madley blows for a foul.
Thanks, mate - we need it.
Rathbone, who failed to make it at the MUFC Academy, is on for Joe Rafferty. That's a long way down!
Back from picking up Jon but leaving soon
Might make the end of the Cup match
Pablo looks really fed up. But it's been one-way traffic so far.
When UWS suggested N.Y. for the reunion did he mean WNY, ENY , SNY ,NNY , or Cny. Do you know?
I think he was suggesting his place in Scotia, near Albany.
Well Done as Matthew Done heads a deflected effort from Number One SOn off the line after a cheeky back heel from Delle Alli that was sandwiched in between.
Thanks for the clarification, mate.
If family isn't visiting... it is possible
I'll check with the missus too about the possibility of hosting here.
Rathbone , the former MUFC Academy player, fouls Danny Rose , the former LUFC Academy player just outside the Dale box. Bob will not be pleased.
If I'm right in my predictions, England have an easy run to the quarter-finals, where we would meet either Brazil on July 9 or Germany on July 10. I fear that's curtains for us.
Matty Done heads out the free kick then a deflected effort from Sissy is straight to Josh Lillis.
Wright picks up a yellow for an elbow on Pablo.
Delle Ali goes down very theatrically but gets a penalty
TOTAL DIVE
I HATE IT!!!!
TRAGEDY FOR ROCHDALE AS DELLE ALLI IS TRIPPED IN THE BOX.
Dele Ali won't help his reputation there with an acrobatic fall for a pen.
HK to take...
English players are worse than foreigners!!
Kane to win it...he does
Bloody cheat Delle Ali
GOAL !!!HARRY KANE SCORES A GREAT PENALTY TO GIVE THE SPUDS A LATE 1-2 LEAD.
Leeds are playing atrociously at the back!!
I thought Jones and Smalling were bad!!!
Meanwhile, Wiedwald make an acrobatic save to keep the score at 0-2.
The Cup can be cruel. Danny Rose passed to Lamela, whose shot deflected to Delle Alli Sandwich. He flopped easily under the challenge from McGeahy. Really sad.
Delle Ali has to fall down against League 1 team. Go back and play with them!!
Is he still a starter for England
I think he has gone down far!
A minute into a quartet of stoppage time minutes.
DESMOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW!!!!!!
GOAL !!! DESMOND AS JUSTICE IS DONE . STEVE DAVIES SCORES TO TIE IT UP.
