Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The World Cup Planning Thread

Hiya, chaps - it's that time again. If it's an even-numbered year, we've got a summer of top-notch footie to enjoy. Of course, this is a special one as it's a World Cup summer. We may be arsed off that World Cup 2018 will be hosted by Russia, but we're still determined to enjoy the tournament.

This is an effort to start a conversation about ideas for an LOB reunion this summer. I'm open to traveling or hosting and am looking forward to seeing you lot and enjoying the footer together. So, let's be hearing you. Where and when would you like to get together?

Thanks for posting, Bob. Count me in. I'm definitely interested. Like you, I'm open to either hosting . Last World Cup we met during the opening matches. Any stage works well, in all honesty.

Thanks, MUR - great to hear that you're on board. So, when does your school year end?

And what about you, UWS?

I can't host this time. I'll be out of town for a wedding 6.14-18 in Portland OR. I'm trying to see if Mark Enderle or Brett Thompson will be watching the WC and catch a match or two with them.

I'll watch this space to see what you lot are getting up to.

So here are the key dates to consider:

Thursday, June 14 - Russia 2018 kicks off with the hosts v. Saudi Arabia (a really rubbish opening match, IMHO).

Saturday, June 16-Sunday, June 17 - Opening weekend (no real marquee matches, with the possible exception of Germany v. Mexico at 11am Sunday, June 17)

Monday, June 18 - England kick off their campaign against Tunisia at 2pm EST

Sunday, June 24 - England v. Panama at 8am!

Thursday, June 28 - The Big One! England v. Belgium at 2pm

Round of 16 - England's Group G is paired up with Group H (Japan, Poland, Senegal, and Colombia) so:

If England win Group G: England v. Group H Second on Monday, July 2 at 2pm.

If England come second, England v. Group H First on Tuesday, July 3 at 2pm.

Quarterfinals - If England get through Round of 16, we get the winner of either Group E1 (probably Brazil) and Group F2 (probably Mexico) on Friday, July 6 or Group F1 (probably Germany) and Group E2 (maybe Serbia?) on Saturday, July 7 at 10am.

Semis - Okay, we're dreaming at this point, but if England were to beat either Brazil or Germany in the quarters, we'd be on to a semi on either Tuesday, July 10 or Wednesday, July 11.

The Final will be played on Sunday, July 15.

My apologies for taking so long to respond. My last day of work is June 2nd and I'm taking the Summer off, so my schedule is open.
