Wahay - it's Saturday!
Somehow we've reached another weekend, another Saturday morning when we can put our feet up and watch some of the good stuff. We start early with Citeh's trip to Turf Moor to play Burnley. At 10am, our two United's will be featured (Man Utd on the box against Huddersfield and Leeds against Evil Cardiff in a playoff cracker streaming on ESPN). Finally, the late was has Arsenal and Everton. Join me for all of the action this morning, won't you?
344 Comments:
Morning, chaps! Citeh, quite simply, have been playing on a different plane this season, inspiring talk of "Best team ever." They've only dropped seven points all season.
Burnley on the other hand are a reasonable 7th n the league, but well behind the pack chasing for European spots - essentially, mid-table, even though they're in the Top Ten.
The teams now out on the pitch at Turf Moor:
Burnley: Pope, Bardsley, Long, Mee, Taylor, Lennon, Hendrick, Cork, Gudmundsson, Barnes, Vekes. Subs: Lowton, Nkoudou, Westwood, Wells, Lindegaard, Arfield, O’Neill.
Manchester City: Ederson, Walker, Kompany, Otamendi, Danilo, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Aguero, Sterling. Subs: Bravo, Laporte, Adarabioyo, Zinchenko, Toure, Diaz.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire).
Pep has made an emotional appeal to officials to provide more protection for his players before the match, coming after the horrendous tackle that has sidelined Leroy Sane for two months. It'll be interesting to see how Martin Atkinson responds to that call.
Here we go, then. Burnley in their home kit and CIteh in their all-black number. The two Jims, Proudfoot and Beglin on the microphones for this one.
Ashley Barnes is down receiving treatment after a clash with Vincent Kompany. He should be able to continue.
Burnley clear the free kick from Citeh but at a cost. Big Sam Vokes and Phil Bardsley are now down for the count. I thought it was Citeh who were the victims of rough treatment!
Good morning, mate. I'm up to join you for the Saturday action.,
How was your week?
Morning, mate - heavy week here. We had two candidates on campus interviewing for an open position. That always has me running around, playing a ceremonial role as chair. And on top of that we got a lot of snow.
How about you, mate?
WOW !!!! Hope your semester becomes easier. I've been using up my days , so it's been great taking every Friday off.
A cross from Silva goes just wide as Nick Pope is down to more unusual Citeh Physical play
Did Aaron Lennon transfer to Burnley or is he on loan?
I believe he completed a transfer during the window.
Yeah - looking ahead, I think things will slow down when I get beyond Wednesday of next week. Everything's going smoothy - I'm just having to put in a lot of 12 hour days.
Citeh is hard "pressed" to play out of the back
Hope the weekends give you a chance to rest. Hopefully a thrashing of Evil Neil's lads will help
Gundogan mosses a cross from Kyle Walker , but it's cleared by Kevin Long for a Citeh corner then Ben Mee clears for another Citeh corner.
GOAL! Look at that! Citeh are the kind of team where even their left back is capable of that. Danilo with a lovely bender into the corner.
That's what I'm hoping, too. We really need a good win against playoff opposition to get our season back on track. I'm wondering if any of the new players will feature today.
THEN GOAL !!!!! DANILO SCORES WITH A CRACKING LONG RANGE FINISH IN THE UPPER 90. THE NEXT CORNER WAS TAKEN SHORT AND TWO PASSES LATER FOUND DANILO FOR THAT SCORE.
Leeds will be on ESPN 3 Next Saturday as they have a trip to Bramall Lane. It will be good vs Evil the next two Saturdays.
Aguero has a two shots blocked off a counter led by Sterling.
Sterling shoots straight at Nick Pope two passes after Ederson cleared.
OH!!!! Ben Mee nearly ties it up from a free kick that was volleyed and acrobatically turned around by Ederson.
Kompany heads out a cross from Hendrick for a Burnley corner.,
I saw that match was coming up. I'm not really looking forward to a Yorkshire Derby of that nature right now. The side isn't really in good form or morale. Could be a rough week for us if things don't go well today.
Another chance for Ben Mee as he heads wide off the corner with a free header oat the far post.
Kevin Long booked for a foul on Gundogan.
Nick Pope superbly saves a long range rocket from KDB, but Aguero could not put away the rebound.
Should have been 0-2 there. Decent hit from Ginger Winger, saved by Pope right to the head of Aguero. Should have been an easy nod in.
Bolton defeated Bristol City 1-0 in the Championship yesterday. That's a shocker!
Jack Cork picks up his usual yellow card - his seventh of the season.
Jack Cork booked for holding back KDB.
Ederson had to be alert as a Burnley pass took a couple of deflections , but Ederson gathered before Cork could connect.
I saw that! Great result for us. It's interesting to look at the table. Wolves are clearly going up champions, as they're 11 points up and running away with things. However, below them, there is only ten points between Derby in second (54 points) and us in 10th (44 points). Any side that puts on a late run of say six or seven wins has a real chance.
A quartet of stoppage time minutes.
Into stoppage and I'm headed for a half-time nap on the couch. Back for the second half, mate.
Cheers, mate. Look forward to chatting with you during the second half.
Aguero was through, but shot straight at Nick Pope.
Citeh one up at the half thanks to a cracking finish from Danilo.
I hate watching Burnley for a number of reasons, but chief among them is that Ashley Barnes wears #10. I always think "that's the mot ridiculous assignment of that number" but then I'm brought up short. Gallas. Effin' Gallas played in the #10 shirt for Arsenal. Bloody hell.
Back on at Turf Moor for the beginning of the second half. Burnley have made one change. And I'm enjoying a bagel and a cuppa - the official breakfast of the LOB.
The second half is underway as Matty Lowton is on for the injured Phil Bardsley. Like for like.
Morning, Gooner. Totally agree with you. I'm a traditionalist so I'd prefer to see the original scheme of the squad numbers, with the first team wearing 1-11. The #10 should be your playmaker - Barnes is not that.
Good morning, Gooner. Great to hear from You. How have you been?
Great breakfast, Bob. Well done
Aguero has a shot deflected for a corner off pass from Sterling
My issue with Burnley is that they've filched a number of our players, much like Norwich a few years ago. They typically feature Sam Vokes up top and Charlie Taylor as fullback. Somehow Chris Woods, our top scorer last season, hasn't featured much recently. Perhaps he's injured. I won't shed a tear.
Then Gundogan has a shot deflected for a corner.
AGuero has a volleyed pass claeared for a corner off a nice cross field pass then win another corner.
Didn't Burnley poach Aaron Lennon as well? Just wondering.
A shame that Citeh's chance have fallen to Aguero . His counterpart, Ashley " Peter " Barnes would have put that way . Right gents?
Well, Aaron left us for Spurs yonks ago. Then he spent a season at Everton. And now Villa. He's a journeyman - can't really blame Villa for that one.
Gundogan with yet another Citeh shot blocked for a corner.
I was looking for another excuse to blame Burnley for something. How about Sam I" I AM " Vokes?
Oh - Sterling put one over the top! Somewhat difficult chance there as it arrived at pace behind him and he had to reach back and scoop.
I don't know - Aguero has been a bit off the boil for a few weeks now, but I'd still have him in my side ahead of Ashley Barnes, wouldn't you mate?
Will Gooner be watching Joe Scarborough's documentary on the North London Derby? The one on the Manc Derby on Boxing Day was excellent.
Danilo tries another bender, but this time Pope is wise to it and tips it over. Cheeky!
Danilo nearly scores an identical goal to the one he did . Same short corner routine, but finger tipped over by Nick Pope./
When is that Joe Scarborough doc being shown? I might DVR that.
I was thinking what if we could have signed Ashley Barnes instead of Alexis? Time to wake up. Who are we kidding?
It's on the local NBC as soon as the late match between the Gunners and Toffees concludes.
Sterling wins a corner off of Mee, not him.
Are you ready for a quiz question?
Gundogan lunges in and gets a yellow for his trouble. Burnley have a chance at a free kick to level things.
Was Gundogan booked because he fouled Lennon or because it was a player from the LUFC Academy?
Always, mate - lay it on me!
They fail to take advantage of that free kick as not one Maroon and sky blue shirt made a connection off that free kick,.
Ashley Barnes has been capped at under 20 level by which country? It's not one of the four home nations or Ireland.
OH!!!! What a superb reflex save by Ederson from Lennon off a Citeh style attack from Burnley.
Superbly finger tipped on to the bar by Ederson
Oh - what a miss there by Sterling!
WOW!!!! Sterling misses a real sitter. Even you or I could have scored that. Sterling shot wide at the far post from six inches out off a pass from Kyle Walker.
Great question, mate. My typical instinct is to go with Australia, but I'm going to switch it up and say "Canada?"
Maybe three yards out , but it was still a wide open goal
Sorry. Both are wrong. The official language of this country is not English.
Ben Mee booked for some illegal play during a weekend at Bernie's
Ben Mee picks up a yellow card. In the good old days that would have been called as obstruction and an indirect free kick would have been awarded. Not these days.
Lennon with an LUFC Academy style finish that ended up in the Pennines
Teenage prospect, Brahim Diaz replacing a player who had far from a Sterling performance today
Sterling gets the hook only moments after he missed a sitter. 18 year-old Ramon Diaz is on for him.
And Sterling had a bit of a strop with Pep going off. Not a good sign.
Brahim on for Raheem!
Otamendi's poor touch gifts Burnley a corner.
Wow - that is another tricky one, isn't it? I can't actually say that I've ever heard Ashley speak, so I suppose that I was just assuming given his name that he was a native English speaker (and perhaps he still is). Where on earth might he have grown up? Let's say, for the sake of exoticism - Zimbabwe?
Kevin Long heads a long way over from the corner.
Ashley Barnes was born and raised in England , but qualified for this country through his grandmother. It's A European country.
ob's Your Uncle doesn't mean calling Uncle on a quiz question. Does it? LOL!
GOAL! Burnley are back in it!
GOAL !!! GUDMUNSSON TIES IT UP FOR BURNLEY OFF A SUPERB CROSS.
Halftime sub, Matty Lowton, put in a superb cross and the big Icelander scored with a superb first time finish
Great ball in from Charlie Taylor - we've been missing that service this season - and Gudmondsson finishes sharply on the half volley past Ederson.
1-1! Game on!
As things stand, Citeh's lead can be reduced to a baker's dozen.
Any guesses on the quiz question. Gooner will be curious.
City's easy win here appears to be slipping away. And Burnley are pressing for a winner!
How about Burma? I'm assuming it's a former colony.
That sure would open up things for United and Chelsea after poor midweek results.
Jim Proudfoot is sensing a "sting in the tail;" I don't. I think this will finish even steven.
Sorry, mate. It's a European country that was never a British colony. They played in the 2016 Euros.
Walker wins a corner off of Chuck Taylor.
Citeh have been known to pop up with unexpected late winners. We can't take our eyes off this one/.
A triplet of stoppage time minutes.
Into stoppage time.
Barnes, the mystery man, corner flagging it now.
Iceland?
Now Ashley Barnes is booked either for fouling Otamendi or for cumulative infractions. This should do it.
It's over and Burnley superbly hold Citeh 1-1.
Sorry,. mate . Not Iceland.
It finishes 1-1 then. Sterling will take a pounding for that big miss. Doesn't really change much for Citeh or Burnley in truth.
Off to the shower ahead of the big ones at 10am.
Back from taking Elizabeth grocery shopping
Back from the shower to enjoy the United fest.
YIKES!!! A moment's silence impeccably observed as it's the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster
Moments of silence at Old Trafford for the Munich air disaster and and moment of applause for Jimmy Armfield at Elland Road. Fitting tributes.
Off from OT!!!
COME ON MAN UNITED!
And we're underway at both Old Trafford and Elland Road now. Come on, you Whites!
Got the link on for the match at ER
Cardiff nearly score as a corner is headed into the ground and then just over.
Me too - marvelous stuff!
Stoke City take a much needed early lead at the Cherries.
COME ON YOU WHITES!
Is Evil Neil kidding us? He claims Sol Bamba is better than Virgil Van Dijjck? Is that right, mate?
Lindy goes on a speedy solo run, but his shot is easily saved by Lossl.
Shaquiri with the Stoke goal
Bugger! Cardiff take the lead through Patterson. Bugger!
BUGGER!!! PATTERSON GIOVES EVIL NEIL'S LADS THE LEAD AT ER! Sorry, Bob.
Traore had a pass blocked then he went on a run down the left and Patterson got behind Jannsson to head in from close range
Oh - Lasogga so close to leveling it. Etheridge tipped the big man's drive onto the post.
Oh - another chance for Cardiff! Not liking it at all.
Meanwhile the Hegazy has given the Baggies the lead vs the Saints in the battle of the bottom two and Glenn murray has given the Seagulls the lead vs the Hammers.
The Brummies take a much needed lead at Hillborough
Oh - Madine was nearly in again. We're playing with fire today.
WOW !!! Killie have defeated Celtic 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Baggie , Mulumbu. Is that Celtic's first SPL loss in the Brendan Rodgers era.
Jamie Vardy gives the Foxes the lead vs the Swans
BLOODY HELL ! How was that not a penalty? Luke Shaw was cleaned out by Komgolu. That would have been more appropriate in the Super Bowl.
Not Shaw about that. Actually it was McTomain , who felt it was a poison challenge., Jose asks Mike Dean for an explanation. As if he's an expert on penalty decisions.
Leicester have taken the lead against hapless Swansea through Jamie Vardy. Who needs Mahrez?
Patterson heads straight to Wiedwald off a free kick
More thuggish Terriers play as a foul on Alexis results in a booking , not top Billing as Stuart Atwell has had enopugh
Sol Bamba, our old boy, went in rashly on Alioski there and could have easily given up a pen. Got the ball - and Alioski.
Alioski down off a nasty foul from Sol Bamba,
Southend take the lead at Posh while Pompey have come from behind to tie it up vs Donny Trump
Oh - how did that not go in for either Big PML or Alioski. Wonder save there from Etheridge.
OH!!! Leeds nearly tie it up as Etheridge superbly turns around a close range header from Alioski.
The heartening thing is that we are creating some chances and getting the crowd going. This is a cracking match.
Alexis nearly scores on his home debut as Lossl superbly saved his long range effort.
Sol Bamba has done Jansson off the ball and the referee completely missed it. Then Berardi picks up his usual yellow. This one could get out of control.
Now Berardi is booked. He could have been sent off with a different ref.
Jansson is still down needing treatment.
Aberdeen the lead vs Hamilton as they aim to chip into Celtic's large lead.
The Bees have a player sent off at Pride Park while Rudy Gestede has been sent off for the Teesiders at CR. It's still 0-0 in both matches.
This is terrible - Jansson is being stretchered off now. We're really thin at the back now with Liam Cooper suspended. Stu Dallas will come on to patch things up but this could get really interesting.
Berardi will shift over to center half and Dallas will take his place at right back.
stuart Dallas on for the injured Jannsson. Berardi will slot in at the center of defense.
The Brummies go two up at Hillsborough. Good news for Bob, but bad for Fred/.
West Ham are level through a spectacular solo effort by Chicha.
another W. Yorkshire side makes a change as it's not Top Billing . He's been booked then off injured as he's replaced by Aaron Mooy.
Great news for us, for sure. If we can win this one today, it could be a great day. Still early doors.
Fatty gives the Rams the lead vs the ten man Bees.
Shirtless in Leeds in February. WOW!
Is Huddleston back at Derby after all these years?
We're made of tough stuff.
Gary Madine booked for a nasty challenge.
Gary Madine gets a yellow for a nasty one. We're likely to get a red card in this one, hopefully not for us.
Hogan gives Villa the lead vs Richard Burton in a local derby of sorts.
Cammy Jerome puts the Rams two up vs the ten man Bees.
Jared Bowen gives the struggling Tigers the lead at Ridsdale's house of horrors.
Oh - Stu Dallas up the other end latched onto a good ball from Pablo. Couldn't really get much on the shot.
Now Ridsdale's lads tie it up as Dallas was thorugh, but shot tamely at Etheridge.
I'm really liking the look of Matthew Pennington today. He's one for the future for us - really filling in nicely.
Samlling offside off a free kick as his close range effort is blocked by Lossl.
The Tractor Boys take the lead on a return to the SOL for Mick.
Argyle surprisingly two up vs promotion chasing Blackburn while Scunny take the lead at Higbury
Soton are level through Mario Lemina, his first for the club.
Bugger! Bugger! Bugger! Junior Hoilett slides in two double Cardiff's advantage. Not good at all.
BLOODY HELL !!! JUNIOR HOILETT GIVES CARDIFF A TWO GOAL LEAD WITH A FAR POST TAP IN AS PATTERSON GOES AGAIN ON A RUN DOWN THE LEFT AND HIS PASS WAS PUT AWAY. LEEDS CAUGHT OUT BY AN INNOCUOUS LONG BALL.
Fortunately, Not a Big Club are 0-2 down now to Brummies.
sorry, Bob. MOT!!! COME ON DESMOND!
Wigan two up vs the Gils thorugh expected sources, Will Grigg and Nick Powell.
Now all I'm hearing is the away fans celebrating. That's not done at ER.
A pair of stoppage time minutes at OT
Soton have turned it around at the Hawthorns - they're 1-2 up now through Jack Stephens.
Two goal sin three minutes as the Saints have come from behind to lead 1-2 at the HAwthors. Jack Stephens with the goal
A quintet of stoppage time minutes at ER!
New boy Alexis picks up a yellow card for a hack. And that's half-time at OT. Not satisfactory but at least you're not 0-2 down, eh?
Ralls has been booked for Cardiff as it's 0-0 at the half at OT
I'm not surprised given the injury to Jansson.
Trybull has given the Canaries the lead vs the ten man Teesiders
Ridsdale's lads have come from behind to take a 2-1 lead vs the Tigers thanks to a spot kick
Berardi's in trouble now. He's off! Another bloody sending off. Ridiculous!
BLOODY HELL! Berardi has been sent off for Leeds. A second yellow for a foul on Madine.
Fred not any happier than you, mate. The tBoys two up at the SOL as Fred faces successive relegations and L1 footie next season.
Morrison with a free header to make it 0-3. What on earth!
BLOODY HELL !!! CARDIFF GO THREE UP OFF THE RESULTING FREE KICK AND NOW IT'S HALFTIME WITH CARDIFF THREE UP.
Not sure if this will make you feel better , but the Brummies are now three up at Hillsborough against ten men
Second half underway from OT!
COME ON MAN UNITED!
oh!!!! Alexis has a close range effort blocked ten yet another Terrier booked as Tommy Smith booked for nasty foul on Alexis
Back for the second half now. Did I ever get that Ashley Barnes question right, mate?
The free kick is headed out for a corner that leads to another.
