A Bit of This and a Bit of That
A very good Saturday morning to all of you chaps out there in LOB land. I'm up early to enjoy the cornucopia of English footie on hand today. We start with the Cup. Chelsea and Leicester have already been guaranteed spots in the quarter-finals. Who will join them? First up are Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea. That's followed by a full schedule of Cup and Football League action at 10am EST. Finally, we've got the big one - Huddersfield v. United. Join me for all of the fun, won't you?
135 Comments:
God morning , Bob. I'm up to join you for all the action.
I'll be deleting this one and joining you on your post.
I already deleted mine .
Never mind - it looks as if you deleted yours. Welcome!
They're off from Hillsborough.
COME ON YOU SWANS!
Cheers, mate. Just to let you know that the 10 AM matches will not be televised. Just the one on FS Plus.
We're away at Hillsborough. Here are the teams:
Sheff Wed: Dawson, Frederico Venancio, Jones, Pudil, Hunt, Boyd, Butterfield, Reach, Fox, Wallace, Nuhiu. Subs: Loovens, Lucas Joao, Baker, Wildsmith, Kirby, Pelupessy, Nielsen.
Swansea: Nordfeldt, Bartley, Roberts, Mawson, Van der Hoorn, Olsson, Routledge, Ki, Carroll, Narsingh, Abraham. Subs: Dyer, Clucas, Jordan Ayew, Mulder, Naughton, Fernandez, James.
Referee: Paul Tierney.
OH!!! Just out of reach as Adam Reach was through and Nordveldt pushed his shot around the post.
And a chance! Reach runs into the right side of the penalty area. He has two team-mates to his left but goes for goal – and Nordfeldt pushes wide!
Venancio could have done better with that free header from the resulting corner. Good start from Not a Big Club.
Jacob "Butterfingers" Butterfield took the corner and it was headed well wide by Venacaio.
I'm in the middle of a five day weekend . Do you want to know how?
Swansea haven't gotten off the bus yet.
Me too! How are you pulling it off?
I'm surprised because I thought Carlos Carvalao would be keen to prove the Owl were wrong to sack him and to show them he's gone on to bigger and better things.
I'm taking off yesterday and Tuesday and already have off for President's Day. That gets me out of Spring Open House because it's Tuesday evening and I got approved to be off before it was announced. Your thoughts?
How about you. Are you off for President's Day?
The Swansea fans are pulling out "Flags of Our Fathers" early doors to try to inspire their side. It's not happening yet.
Fredonia initiated a new "Winter Break," giving students Thursday and Friday of last week off. Add President's Day to that. Nice, eh?
Well done. Equivalent , but a different combination. Nice, mate.
After a good start by the Owls, this match has gone quiet.
Rather quite, yes. I notice that Not a Big Club have an entirely empty stand behind the goal to our left. Typical.
It even looks like an unusually subdued crowd.
Is that the away end that is empty?
A bit naughty by Daniel Pudil on Tammy Abraham. I thought the Czech international would be booked.
Did you notice that Leeds plays tomorrow and that it's on ESPN 3?
Ross Wallace wins a corner for the underdogs
YIKES! You're correct, Bob. Nary a person to be seen in that part of the stadium. Pathetic for the Fifth Round of the Cup.
Bob's hero, Garry Monk, not taking a vow of silence as he's in the announcers box. I wonder which team he's rooting for.
I did notice that. I don't whether to look forward to it our cringe in anticipation. At least Paul Heckingbottom has had a week to work with the lads now. And we should have Spitty Saiz back in the fold after his lengthy suspension.
Naughty Naughton has a shot deflected for the Swans first corner of the match
Where have you gone, Gary Monk - a nation turns its lonely eyes to you - woo woo woo!
Dawson forced to punch away the corner after it was headed vertically up instead of cleared away.
LOL, mate! Good point.
Pudil is down needing treatment after a clash with his own keeper. Tammy thought he should have a pen there.
It looks like Daniel Pudil is down with a concussion., A Not So Big Club can ill afford to lose their best defender. He's the main reason they're punching above their weight.
Thanks, mate - a bit of Simon and Garfunkel always brightens my morning.
I didn't see that he had any claims for a penalty.
Gareth Southgate in attendance . I guess he's watching Tammy Abraham and Tom Carroll. He must not be unimpressed so far.
Did I tell you when my school year ends?
I can't see that Abraham or Carroll have any chance of getting into the Russia squad. But Gareth deserves a nice day out.
When is that, mate?
Nice pass from Routledge to Tammy Abraham , who was wide open, but the return cross was headed out for a Swans corner.
OH!!!! The corner was headed out then a cross from NAughty Naughton was headed by Van der Horn and well tipped over by Cameron Dawson.
Oh - great save from Dawson from the header.
My last day of work is June 2nd and I'm taking the Summer off , so my schedule is wide open.
Agreed about those players not making the squad for Russia, but not sure if you would call a trip to Sheffield a nice day out. Is that right, mate?
Well wide by Ki from long range as he did anything , but unlock that defense.
Physical violence by Neville Southall could have been accomplished by him sitting on someone., Right, Bob?
Probably - Neville was a fan of the pies.
Van Der Horn tried to play the ball off of Ross Wallace for a goal kick , but it came off of him for a corner.
A minute of stoppage time as it's another corner.
Half a chance there for Reach, whose flicked header was well over the bar.
Adam Reach heads over from the corner just out of the keeper's reach
It's 0-0 at the end of the half , which was not the most entertaining.
The numpty in the FOX studio says this has been an entertaining first half. What match has he been watching?
The second half is underway from Bob's beloved Hillsborough.
We're back on for the second half now. The crowd at Hillsborough enjoying a bit of The Ramones as we get underway. No goals in the first half. Let's hope they can find the big rectangles at either end in the second half.
I've been enjoying some lively banter on my Facebook threads between LHS alums on either side of the ideological divide. We appear to have an even split among our old high school cohort.
Narsingh goes down, looking for a penalty and Paul Tierney says he's well out of tune as he's having none of it. I agree with Mr. Tierney.
Narsignh got the wrong-side of Fox there and was asking for a pen as he seemed to be shoved off the ball.
If it's about the tragedy in Florida I'm on your side. Those that disagree haven't been in education and haven't been in the situation of those grieving parents.
In that challenge , Narsingh sounded out of tune and acted more like Megan Fox!
The Swans win a corner as a cross came off of George Boyd.
I'm not sure that Megan has any experience playing football.
Dawson by Kyle Bartley after Tom Carroll took the corner short then got it back to whip in the cross
LOL, mate. It sure would liven up this dreadful match.
Yes, that was one thread. And another based on the 13 indictments of Russian operatives by the Robert Mueller team.
Would have been better off getting some extra kip? The banter has been the only reason to be up so far.
That it would.
I agree - but that's often the case with these things.
Big Red was singing the praises of 6'9'' striker Nuhiu. I'm not seeing it.
A baker's dozen and nary a Yank? Can that be, mate?
Nuhiu looks really clumsy. Reminds me of some of the players that played for Colchester United during our time in England.
Just a reminder that the 10 AM matches are NOT being televised. I will be off tutoring at that time. I will be back for the late match. How about you?
Ki failed to unlock the Owls defense . Where's a locksmith when you need one?
He's a big chunk, not unlike our new Dutch fella Jan De Grot. Not very mobile.
Nathan Dyer on for Narsingh , who's been a bit out of Ki today and more than a tad frustrating.
Van der Horn is in trouble here. Yellow card. Could have been red.
A clumsy challenge by Van Der Horn just outside his box and booked for that. I'm not tooting his horn.
A waste of a free kick as Butterfingers takes and Kyle Bartley is fouled.
Tammy Abraham is replaced by Andy Ayew. Gareth Southgate will not have been impressed.
Nuhiu should spend mor time practicing football and less time on that stupid looking beard,
Ayew with a tame long range effort to Cameron Dawson.
Peluppsy, a new signing for the Owls, is on for Butterfingers, who had a decent match
Gareth will be crossing another name off his list, no doubt.
Andy Ayew goes on a run and puts through Routledge , who has a shot deflected for a corner.
Ayew is put through by Nathan Dyer and his shot is easily saved by Dawson.
Ayew has added a bit of pep to the Swansea front line. He's a useful sub.
Agreed. Is a day out in Sheffield really a nice day out? Is that even possible?
Narsingh and Van Der Horn have been more out of Ki than Les Dawson. HEE HEE!
Jack Hunt heads out a cross from Routledge for another Swans corner.
Swansea are doing some concerted pushing now, camped around Wednesday’s penalty area, but just can’t come up with a decent cross or final pass.
I blame Wallace for the incident , not Roberts. He knew what he was doing. I would have booked Wallace.,
Better from Nuhiu , who for the first time this match, showed some great footwork, but his shot was a tame near post effort that was easily saved by Nordveldt.
Wallace picks up a yellow card for a late one. There was some afters there from Norton.
Ross Wallace booked for a foul on Naughty Naughton. He needs to be careful as he seems to be losing his cool late in this match. Surprising for sub=ch an experienced player.
Sam Clucas has joined us for the last 10 minutes or so. He's on for Olsson.
Oh - our old LUFC pal Kyle Bartley misses a golden chance to win it for the Swans.
The free kick was headed by Bartley straight to Dawson.
Bad boy Wallace comes off as well. Joao comes on for him.
Smart move by the Owls manager as Ross Wallace is replace by Lucas Joao.
Minutes earlier it was the final roll of the dice from Carlos Carvalho as Sam Clucas came on , but I didn't see who he replaced.
Ki is fouled because he was just out of Reach of an Owls . He was fouled from behind and Adam was booked.
Hey Guys
Sorry I am going to be a miss today
Busy entertaining my niece
Have a great weekend... I will... I have next week off!!
TTFN
Cheers, UWS. Look forward to chatting with you next weekend. Enjoy your Winter Break.
Mot sure that I would want to watch a replay of this match
Hiya, UWS - sorry to miss you this weekend. Enjoy the time with your niece. Cheers!
Jordan Ayew fouled from behind y Jack Hunt, who somehow escapes a booking.
Nathan Dyer with a long range effort that is a real Dyer and real dire.
A triplet of stoppage time minutes.
Oh - how did that one stay out?!
OH!!! A Not So Big Club could have won it l;ate, but fluffed their lines and Lucas Joao was well offside.
Off side in any case. But how did Dyer not stick that one in the net. Not a Big Club inches away from a quarter final berth.
That's that - a replay in Wales in the offing then. I'm officially goal starved. Hoping for more goals in the later matches today.
We are put out of our misery as a really dreadful cup tie finishes 0-0. Not sure if I want to watch the replay.
The 10 AMers will not be televised. Just the Baggies vs the Saints on FS Plus. I will be back for the Terriers vs United.
Looks like Fox are switching to the Bundesliga now. Not sure what options we have. Maybe on Fox Soccer 2 Go?
Sorry, mate. It looks like I may miss much of the United match later on. My car has picked up an unfortunate gravelly, loose-change kind of noise in the front end, so he's going into the shop this afternoon. The only appt time they had was 1pm.
Wahay! I'm just checking in by phone from the car place and see that United are 0-1 up through a third minute goal from the Chunk. Well in!
Hello, Bob. I just got back from a tutoring job to see United one up at the half. They also had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside.
The second half is underway from the John Smith's Stadium
The half time highlights showed that the goal scored by the Chunk was similar to the ones he scored for Everton. He turned a defender then picked his spot.
Luke Shaw called for obstruction on Quarner just outside the United box. He's twice Shaw's size , but went down really easily.
The free kick went into the wall. Great slide tackle by Smalling on RVLP then Mounie goes down , looking for a penalty off a cross when he ran into Shaw, just like Quarner.
Danny Williams goes down off minimal contact from Alexis. Free kick just outside the United box.
Neither the free kick nor the rebound get top Billing as the free kick was into the wall then rebound was wide, but a corner was given.
THEN WAY HAY!!! GOAL!!! UNITED BREAK OFF THE TERRIERS CORNER AS THE CHUNK SCORES HIS AND UNITED'S SECOND AS THEY GO TWO UP. SIMILAR FINISH TO THE FIRST GOAL.
The corner from RVLP was headed out . Then Top Billing stumbled was tackled. The ball broke to the Chunk, wo played a clever one with Alexis , who played a superb through ball for the Chunk and he outraced the Terriers and picked his spot past Lossl.
Tommy Smith on for Hadergjnjaj and Scott Malone on for Kongolo as David Wagner makes double substitution.
Alexis is karate chopped off the pitch after a good performance.
Lindy on for Mata, who assisted on the first goal then had one disallowed because he was offside by a Mata of millimeters.
Abdelhamid Sabiri, a Moroccan midfield player, is on for RVLP on the final roll of the dice from David Wagner and he heads over off a corner seconds after coming on.
A time wasting substitution from Jose as Eric Bailly is on for the Chunk, returning from injury.
That's it and United win 0-2 at the John Smith's . Jose sportingly appears to have congratulated David Wagner for a good performance.
That's it for me. I will be around for the action tomorrow.
CHEERS!
