League Cup Sunday!
In years past, the League Cup ruled its Sunday; today, it's got a silly name and has to struggle for relevance with a slate of Premiership matches on the same day. In my book, though, it's the first real silverware on offer during the season (as well as some significant PPP points). Yes, I'll be watching the early Spurs match and hoping that Chelsea v. Man Yoo is a cracker. But the match at Wembley at 11:30 will still be the true star of the day. Join me for all the fun today, eh?
501 Comments:
As if the League Cup didn't already have too much competition, we've got the tail end of the Olympic hockey final between Germany and Russia on as I join NBC Sports. Putin's boys have just stuck in an OT goal, so the football will be with us shortly.
Now it's on to the football. First up, is Spurs visiting Palace. This is traditionally the time of the season when Spurs hit the skids and ruin their chances of winning any silverware. And Palace have every interest in being a banana skin. Spurs could move back into the top four with a win; Palace could drop into the relegation zone with a heavy loss. All to play, then.
Over to Selhurst Park for the kick off now. Here are the teams:
Crystal Palace: Hennessey; Wan-Bissaka, Fosu-Mensah, Tomkins, Van Aanholt, Milivojevic, Riedewald, McArthur, Townsend, Sorloth, Benteke. Subs: Henry, Soare, Delaney, Rakip, Lokilo, Kirby, Lee.
Tottenham: Lloris; Aurier, Sanchez, Dier, Davies, Wanyama, Dembélé, Lamela, Eriksen, Alli, Kane. Subs: Vorm, Trippier, Foyth, Rose, Sissoko, Lucas, Son.
Referee: Kevin Friend
We're underway at Selhurst Park, the home side pressing from the off.
Of course, part of the interest in this one is tracking Harry Kane's scoring rate. He's now level with Mo Salah on 22 goals this season.
Oh - from the free kick by Erickson, Davies sneaks in the back and thought he was tripped as he centered it.
Oh - great save by Hennessy. Palace right under the cosh here.
Oh - great ball in from Van Aanholt and Benteke nearly got on to it. Grabbed by Lloris, who launches Dele Alli down the other end.
Half way through the first half and both sides have had their chances. Very evenly poised right now.
Spurs think they have a penalty but HK has been ruled offside instead. He's gutted.
Townsend, who looks like Palace’s lone creative outlet, almost finds Benteke with a clever curling ball forward into the area but Lloris is alert to it and gathers under pressure.
Oh - Townsend had a chance to slide in Benteke, but he opted for greed, trying a tame effort at goal. Benteke's not happy about it.
Dembele picks up the first yellow card of the afternoon for a body check on Townsend.
Into the stoppage time for the first half.
Half time: A lively if goalless first half comes to an end. Back after a snuggle with the missus.
Back for the second half at Selhurst Park with the official breakfast of the LOB - bagel and cuppa.
Palace get it forward, sparking a frantic foot race between Benteke and Dier, which the latter wins just and Spurs come again, this time down the right, but they still can’t get behind the Palace back line. It remains all a bit scrappy.
Oh - Erickson has a half chance at the edge of the box. Leans back and blows it wildly over the bar.
What a miss from HK! He seemed sure to score there, from about six yards. Got it all wrong. Wide.
Maybe all of this "Harry Kane is the best striker in the world talk" over the past week has started to wear on the man. That was a grievous miss.
An hour gone - cue the changes from Potch. First off the bench is Lucas Moura, who scored a debut Spurs goal last weekend at Spotland, of all places. This is his Prem debut.
As it stands, Spurs will jump back into the top four ahead of Chelski, but the Blues will have a chance to jump back on top with at least a point against United today.
Palace, meanwhile, with a draw will stay a point off relegation.
Really rubbish free kick now - not his best day this one.
Handbags between Dele and Van Aanholt now. I really worry about Alli's temperament, especially given the importance of his role in the summer for England.
Oh - great save from Hennessy from a shot by Ben Davies that seemed to be creeping into the corner.
Dele flops in the box now and Kevin Friend has a decision to make. Goal kick. Dele's reputation is now proceeding him.
Good morning, Bob. I was up shortly before halftime, but have been under the weather. Went to bed at 8:30 in the evening with chills, woke up during the night to take my medications then woke just before halftime. Hopefully, the perspiration will help.
Sparky under the weather. We took him to the vet Friday afternoon because his appetite had diminished. He has low level of blood platelets, is under medication , and is supposed to go back Friday to see if any progress has been made.
Also 0-0 in the Severn Derby.
I agree with you about your post. Since the League Cup was taken over by new sponsors , it's become a bit silly.
Great save by Hennessey from Harry Kane after he missed the initial corner.
OH!!!! How did Aurier not give the Spuds the lead. Nice pass in the box from Ben Davies then Aurier fluffed his lines from four yards out.
Just wide from Harry Kane off a deflected pass.
Oh - Hennessy saves again! This time it's Aurier who is denied. the Welsh keeper is keeping his side in this one.
Lee Chung- Yong on for Andros.
Morning, MUR! I didn't see you come on there. Great to have you on board for this super Sunday.
Morning Boys
Morning, UWS! Are you lads ready for the big match?
BUGGER!!! Zohore has given Cardiff the lead vs Bristol City.
Kane has scored the winner!!!
Of course
GOAL! Kane wins it for Spurs!
GOAL !!!! HARRY KANE SCORES OFF THE CORNER FROM ERIKSEN.
Erickson finally gets a corner right, lofting it to HK at the back stick and the England man rose to nod home past a prone Hennessy.
Good morning, Bob and Dave.
I think United are in danger of finishing outside the top four
I think Liverpool and Spurs will be fighting it out for second and third. I think it is between United and Chelsea for fourth... how big is today's game!!!
Uncle Woy not a happy camper!
Robbie Savage was on 606 last weekend saying that Kane is now the best striker in the world. Your thoughts, gents?
A quartet of stoppage time minutes.
Huge match for you lot today, for sure.
Harry Kane is good, but not that good. That's a bit of an exaggeration.
Palace will stay just above the relegation zone, albeit only on goal difference.
United's line up
De Gea
Valencia
Smalling
Lindeloff
Young
McTominay
Matic
Pogba
Martial
Sanchez
Lukaku
Chelsea
Courtois
Azpil
Christensen
Rudiger
Moses
Kante
Drinkwater
Alonxo
Willian
Hazard
Morata
Palace's next two matches against the two teams playing in the next match.
No he isn't
The free kick from Eriksen is deflected for a corner.
Who is a better #9 than Kane right now? I tend to agree with Robbie, but I want HK to prove it in Russia this summer.
I will be around for the United . The League Cup Final is depending upon the state of my health.
It's over as the Spuds win 0-1, but had to grind out a result.
Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well, mate.
That's it
Spurs are ONE point behind United
Chelsea out of the top four
I so hope United can keep them there!
The Swans are third from bottom. Saints and Palace above them on goal difference.
Thanks, Bob. I went to bed at 8:30 last night with chills and slept in till just before halftime. Starting to feel a little better.
physical or mental health?
Match is on ESPN 2
I will see on the first half because I am off to the airport
They are there. Tottenham’s unbeaten run stretches to 15 and they’re into the top four for now. Palace are still in the thick of it.
Sparky under the weather too.
Physical health for both Sparky and I .
Next up - the big match in the Prem this weekend. Here's the team news out of OT:
Man Utd: De Gea, Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Young, McTominay, Matic, Pogba, Martial, Lukaku, Sanchez. Subs: Bailly, Mata, Lingard, Carrick, Rashford, Shaw, Joel Pereira.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Moses, Kante, Drinkwater, Alonso, Willian, Hazard, Morata. Subs: Caballero, Fabregas, Pedro, Giroud, Zappacosta, Cahill, Emerson.
Referee: Martin Atkinson
Agreed that we need to keep Chelsea out of the top four. Agreed with Bob that Harry Kane needs to produce on the big stage.
Thanks, Dave. It will be great to watch the match on ESPN 2 instead of a link.
Just bloody ignore my line up post Dahlgren!!
Let's hope United make you feel much better David
Just checked . Didn't see it on ESPN 2. Do you mean 3?
This match smells like a 0-0er to me, but I hope I'm wrong.
United could make a gap of 6 points
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
Please don't disappoint me
Thanks, Dave. I hope Sparky too. He's on meds for low blood platelet levels.
Sorry, mate - I missed it.
ESPN not ESPN2
Sparky too
I agree. Matches between these two are always close.
Sounds like it's a really parky day in Blighty. Teams in the tunnel now at OT.
Thanks, Dave.
Teams in the tunnel
I don't care about the stupid, childish managers
Here they come
Thanks. It will be nice to watch the match on the telly instead of a link.
I've just noticed that both sides are sporting shorts that are long enough to almost touch their socks. A long way from those small, tight numbers from the 70s.
At last Pogba over whatever was ailing him. It's my understanding that he was out of the starting lineup due to a bout of McTomain poisoning.
Handshakes between the two baby managers.
Agreed. They're footballers, not fashion models.
Now it's time for the football.
Off we go
They're off from OT.
COME ON MAN UNITED!
The shade is annoying
I'm already irritated by the dark shadows being thrown by the oversized stand.
The announcer says it's a chilly day despite the sunny weather.
Moses wins a corner because he cannot part the Red Sea.
Chelsea in a very early corner. Untied haven't touched the ball apart from heading it out for a corner
Early corner chance for Chelski - Willian tries a dribbler. Doesn't work.
Chelsea take for ever to take a bloody short corner that does absolutely nothing/
Willian wants a free kick now after being nudged off the ball by Pogs.
Rooney is in the directors' box today
Slow start by United
Great tackle by Pogba on Willian. That's more like it./
Chelski with all of the early running here - I can sense UWS getting annoyed already.
Agreed about the United start. Why is Roon in the director's box.
Oh - Morata hits the bar!
All Chelsea... United can't keep possession
Lukaku passes it to Martial who thinks the ball can go thru humans
Chelsea hit the crossbar with a great move then they get the rebound and De Gea has to save
WHERE IS EVERYONE?
Le Sox is irritated by the secretive hand over mouth nonsense. I think it's silly, too.
OH!!! Off the bar from Morata off a great cross from Rudiger after a cross field pass from Hazard then De Gea tips over the rebound./
United get a chance to break
Martial AGAIN tries to go thru a man... it's physics!!
Sorry.From MArcos Alonso, not Rudiger.
I agree with you... there has been a spate of lip readers all of a sudden
LOL! Footballers should be required to take and pass applied physics.
I never did take Physics - bailed out after Chemistry with Big Ern.
All Chelsea. United have not been Chelsea's box and it is coming up to 10 minutes
Now United have a chance from a free kick - could be dangerous.
Now Morata gifts United a free kick.
United get the ball inside the box(cleared right away just past the 9 min mark)
Free kick chance for United
Sanchez over it...useless cross
Alexis with a rubbish free kick lofted into Courtois' arms.
The free kick from Alexis is basically a pass to Courtois.
Who is Big Em?
Better from United now, but the move fizzles out with Alexis.
Even Sanchez works and looks slow playing for United
I HATE IT
Cardiff have defeated Bristol City 1-0. Like the Spuds, it was also a late winner.
Celtic one up at the half at Aberdeen.
Moses with a mazy run - his cross is finally blocked out.
Moses cannot part the Red Sea if he insists on crossing straight in to United players. Physics, Vic!
United seem to be the away team
United seem to be parking the bus
Old Trafford is bored
Roon watching the match the day after a horrible match at VR. He was way off the pace.
Agreed. United have looked flat and slow.
Mourinho has ruined United. I can't believe that this group of attacking talents plays like this.
United don't seem to have any idea how to be creative, positive or entertaining
Matic fouls Willian.
Agreed. A eally boring and defensive start to the match
Has Pogba touched the ball
All the talk is that Jose is kicking him out the door
I would say that this match is putting me to sleep, but I already got ten hours.
21 minutes in... not one United player has touched the ball inside the box!!
Pogba made a great last ditch tackle early on, but since then I haven't seen him.
Mou has certainly set out his stall to grab a point here.
Is United a Prem team or a Serie A team?
Old Trafford is so quiet!
I don't want to hear that United supporters were spoiled by the Fergie years... crap... United attacked under Atkinson, Docherty and Busby
Every United player is just standing still
23 minutes
No touch in box
Little Joe sure has made a point about going for a point.
Since Fergie they've all been defensive minded managers.
Mark Lawro says United have just kept playing like they did in Spain
Martial actually touches the ball in the box but it is for a pisspoor cross
25th minute
Nice break from Pogba and nice pass to Kung Fu Panda, but a poor karate chopped pass into the box.
Finally United brake with pace. Broken up, though.
Sanchez is thinking to himself.. what they hell did I do
The Chunk finally has a touch in the Chelsea box, but his pass is straight to a blue shirt.
United's crossing into the box hasn't found a red shirt ONCE
Lukaku. tries to turn and shoot.. blocked
The Chunk has a shot blocked and then straight up into the air and gathered by Courtois after a cross from Yash.
Oh - great chance for Alexis. Why couldn't he score there?
United get a shot... well a back pass by Sanchez
OH!!!! The best United pass of the match as Matic wins a tackle, Pogba plays a nice pass to the left and pass karate chopped into the box finds Alexis and his tame effort is straight to Courtois.
Pogba looks so disinterested
That was strong by Pogba.. gets fouled by Kante... booked
A French Connection as Kante is booked for a foul from behind on Pogba.
Free kick now for United. Let's make it count.
He still looks bored
Nothing will come of the free kick
Sorry, lads. On fire Willian scores at the Stretford End.
Chelsea break... one nil
Willian with the goal
All came from a pathetic cross and Pogba failing to jump
BUGGER!!! CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD ON THE BREAK. NICE THROUGH BALL FROM HAZARD TO WILLIAN , WHO FINISHED WELL PAST DE GEA. A UNITED CROSS WAS HEADED OUT.WILLIAN FOUND HAZARD ON THE BREAK THEN RECEIVED A NICE RETURN PASS.
De Gea didn't like great on that way. I think he guessed that the shot would go across him. Beaten on his near side.
Went right thru De Gea
Jose will start compiling about him in goal and he will be off
United still don[t show any urgency
Thanks, Bob. To be honest, Chelsea deserve their lead.
Marcos Alonso curls a shot just wide off a pass from Hazard/.
Don't blame the players Jose
Blame yourself..you know they can't do anything without your blessing
They have to follow your instruction to the tee
As you said to Pogba recently , "Read the sign on the door. I'm the manager."
Why isn't he getting flack
I agree, mate. Chelski have bossed it so far. Sad.
Peter Dreary said that United and Chelsea are the only Prem teams that have won every match when scoring first. Not an encouraging stat.,
I agree with UWS too. Jose also needs to understand the buck stops here.
SO BAD FROM UNITED!!
Refuse to go forward... lose possession... give away a break
GOAL! The Chunk answers back!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! THE CHUNK SCORES TO TIE IT UP.
United will not finish in the top four if they play like this
YES!!!! Lukaku scores!!!
Why din't Lukaku and Sanchez celebrate together
Totally undeserved
Nice interplay between Alexis, Martial and Lukaku ahead of that goal. Took his chance really well.
1-1!
First Lukaku goal against a top six opponent. Interesting.
The Chunk won the ball off of Christiansen by being stronger then a nice pass into the box by ALexis that was karate chopped to the Chunk for the nice close range finish.
Why didn't Hazard shoot there!!!
Oh - Alonso with a half chance. Scooped it over.
Quick free kick from Chelsea played into the box to Hazard then laid off for Alonso, who shoots just over.
I don't like the body language of Sanchez and Pogba
Those goals have really livened up the match. To be fair, it's been better than I'd expected.
Matic called for a foul on Hazard. That looked really soft.
Silly foul by Matic there. Now Willian has a chance to swing one in.
Free kick chance for Wllian... soft... up he comes... dangerous
De Gea picks it up
Great ball in and Morata should have done better. He's really gone off the boil since the beginning of the season.
The free kick from Willian comes off of Morata and straight to De Gea,
A pair of stoppage time minutes.
So bad by Matic... horrible pass
Where is everyone running?
Crowd are trying to get the players going forward
Willy Cabs looks like he's freezing.
More mouth covering from Willy Cabs.
Two minutes of stoppage now.
One added minute left
So lucky to be level
Jose doesn't seem to change things
Dixon... this is the way Jose likes it!!!
Morata is down after a clash with Matic.
Morata down, holding his face. A stray arm from Matic.
He hasn't done that much less than Courtois
Half time
Bloody USELESS
That's that for the first half. Off to the bog.
Don't want to hear that teams sit back
United are just flat out boring!!
There is no need to be with the attacking players they have!
Why can City, Liverpool, Spurs attack AND WIN
Back for the start of the second half. Let's have some more goal, lads.
Missed the kick off as I was in the loo
Will the pattern of play change
Doesn't look like it
