Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning, chaps! This will be the 200th meeting of these grand old clubs. Manchester United are well out in front in terms of victories: 79 to 65. Do you happen to know where the first match between these clubs was played in April 1894?
Morning Boys
I do not know the answer to your question. I think United and Liverpool opened up Old Trafford...United lost!
Big news out of Old Trafford... Paul Pogba was hurt yesterday and is out. Rashford starts for the first time since Boxing Day
I don't have a good feeling about today... boy do I hope I'm wrong
Morning, UWS - that's not good news at all. But I'm happy to see Rash get a chance today. I was starting to worry about his World Cup prospects.
The Line Ups
THE GOOD GUYS
Man Utd: de Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Young, McTominay, Matic, Mata, Rashford, Lukaku, Sanchez. Subs: Lindelof, Lingard, Carrick, Romero, Shaw, Fellaini, Darmian.
The Bad Guys
Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Can, Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs: Wijnaldum, Gomez, Henderson, Lallana, Mignolet, Solanke, Matip.
You are correct that Liverpool lost 2-0 on that day in April 1894, mate. Let's see if MUR knows where it was played. Fairly obscure trivia.
Good morning , everyone. Can't think of a better way to start Spring Break than watching the biggest match in the Premier League.
Teams in the tunnel now - you can just sense the electric atmosphere. Crackling.
Morning Bob
I totally agree about Rash and Russia
As you know I have been down on United and their displays
If they play like they did today as they did in the first half... we'll get hammered
Play like we did when we were two down
Teams in the tunnel
Here they come
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board for this one.
Morning David...Lucky you... SPRING BREAK!
Mine isn't until the week after Easter
Was it played at Goodison Park?
Spring Break for me, too. I'm down in Alexandria for the weekend watching this one with the Gooner.
Robbie Earle said that United are the best in the league at not playing well and winning . Is he UWS in disguise?
You are correct that that first match was played at a neutral venue, MUR, but it wasn't at Goodison. Any other guesses?
They're off from OT.
COME ON MAN UNITED!
Not sure of my plans today
I may not make all three matches today
We are off
We're underway - the classic NBC Sports trio on the mics. Liverpool playing in their traditional away kit of white and black.
I am watching the match upstairs still tucked in bed
Comfy!!
Was it Hyde Park? I've heard that name before,
Send my best to everyone at Casa Gooner.
I know this is early... but this has been so slow!
Liverpool just passing it around the back!
Pedestrian
Comfy, UWS!
Glad to see Baiily back
Will do, mate. Not Hyde Park. It's a ground that is still in operation today. But not a Premiership ground currently.
Isn't it waking poor Kathy up?
I may miss the late one because Elizabeth wants to go to a barbecue cookoff. That may be more interesting than Chelsea vs Palace.
Liverpool are enjoying more of the ball in these early exchanges.
I'm probably going to miss the late one, too, as we've got plans to go see the famous cherry blossoms in downtown DC this afternoon.
Valencia goes down easily . Everyone CAN not believe that.
United first run forward is by Rashford and it didn't go for long
I really don't like United's lack of the ball and the lack of doing things when they have it
I wanted United to keep going after the late winner on Monday
That's a must see , mate. Definitely go to that one.
Citeh at Stoke on Monday then off for three weeks. Lucky buggers!
I'll miss United's Sevilla match because I will be at work and then dentist
It will be over anyway after school because of the clock change
We(east coast) will only be four hours behind until March 25
It'll depend on the weather. Quite parky on the East Coast today, albeit without all of the snow that New England has been getting. Bivalve Betsy lost a couple of trees in the storm this week.
My next guess is Maine Road, but you said it's a ground currently in use.
I should be able to watch a load of the midweek footer this week because of the break.
Not Maine Road, mate. Strangely it was not played in either Manchester or Liverpool.
Kathy's up
She gets to watch the telly downstairs
Almost ten minutes in...NOTHING has happened
Has the ball been in either penalty box? Just the one Liverpool cross that was blocked
Rashford shows off his six pack - not sure why. Quite impressive, though. He's had some time in the gym for sure.
That's crazy for March , but I don't recall D.C getting snow. Probably more Lakenheath type weather.
That makes sense. What does Kathy like to watch on a Saturday morning - HGTV?
We'll get some snow down here on Sunday night, just in time for our drive back. For now, it's just low 40s.
Me too. I should be around for the action this week.
NBC's Today mostly
Smelling and De Gea not quite on the same wavelength there. Smelling had to conceded a corner.
Gooner must be pleased after that great result in Milan. That calls for a celebration with some Milano cookies.
Does she like the new all-female line-up now that bad boy Matt Lauer has been turfed out?
YESSSSSSS!!!! RASH
Liverpool get a corner as Smalling has to kick it out with no support
The ball was a little high but it a decent spot... NO ONE WAS
YES!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT GOAL BY RASHFORD!!!
GOAL! Rashford scores on his return to the side!!!
I WANT MORE!!
ATTACK!!
Great finish from Rashford after the knock-on header. Turned the fullback and hit it with his right.
1-0 United!
I am interested in Sanchez's reactions to goals...on Monday and Today... not much excitement
United tails are up now. Another sweeping attack is broken up by Van Dyck.
Really simple and route one as the Chunk headed on a goal kick from De Gea to Rash. He cut inside fellow young England international, Trent Alexander- Arnold and scored with a superb finish. What a time to score his first goal since December.
What's your theory about Alexis' lack of reaction to goals?
Free kick now for Liverpool.
Liverpool now have a free kick in a promising position.
ooh, that was almost met at the back post
Oh - after the free kick was nodded out, Bobby Firmino put a wicked cross over and Mane just couldn't reach it.
The free kick from MIlner took a slight deflection and made it's way wide to Bobby F and his cross eluded everyone and went out
Not sure... I want him to want to be here and be happy
Was the match played somewhere that still exists ?
Northwest?
Somewhere like Turf Moor?
Ewood Park?
I think this is the first of three consecutive matches at OT before heading into the international break.
I'm going with Prenton Park or Bury's Gigg Lane.
Arlo's stat was on the BBC website... he ripped it off from them
Man Utd have scored the opening goal 352 times in Premier League home games, and have only lost 3 of those games - most recently against Liverpool in 2008-09.
I agree David
Liverpool, Sevilla, Brighton in the Cup
Tomorrow we begin Bob's beloved daylight savings time. Starting tomorrow Florida will be permanantly on DST. That's bloody ridiculous because they will be in their own time zone in the Winter.
PHEW!!!! Virgil Van Dyke had a free header off the corner , but was more like Dick Van Dyke with that header.
You are correct, UWS - Ewood Park it was. Odd, eh?
Struth... Van D should have scored!!
Not as close as I thought
That Liverpool victory in 09... wasn't that when United took the lead and then Gerrard and Torres scored four
GOAL! Rashford again! What a day for the boy!
TWO NIL!!!!!!!
RASHFORD AGAIN!!!!
Mata should have shot
Almost a carbon copy finish. Again it's Route 1 stuff, which UWS will appreciate. Lukaku again involved. When the ball came to Rashford, he only had one idea.
2-0 United!
Pulled that one out of the bag!!
Boy I hope United can keep this going
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!! RASH. SIMILAR TO THE FIRST GOAL. THIS TIME A LONG FREE KICK FROM DE GEA WAS OFF THE HEAD OF LOVEREN TO THE CHUNK. HE PASSED TO MATA , WHO BACK HEELED TO RASH FOR AN IDENTICAL FINISH TO THE FIRST GOAL.
Bailly clears for a Liverpool corner.
Tom has joined me... I woke him up for the first goal. He's a true fan to keep awake
Rashford not just on the score book but in the yellow book
Rash booked for a RAsh challenge on Milner. He's trying to subtract one from the LUFC Academy factor.
To quote Mark Knopfler
"He got the action, he got the motion, oh yeah the boy can play." Marcus Rashford!
Rash picks up a yellow for a nasty one.
Bobby F wins a corner off a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Come on United....keep it tight and keep attacking
Still very early
Of course, we only have had two shots
Nice Dire Straits reference, mate.
Great quote, UWS
That look of despair on Klopp's face was priceless. Love it!
Rashford needs to play more for United
Rashford needs to play for England
Ripped it off from someone on the Beeb
Is everyone ready for DST? Stupidly permanent for Florida. WHY?
Klopp smiling. Not sure he will be during his halftime talk.
Jurgen Klopp is having kittens on the sideline.
If they stop changing, which would they keep?
Fred up to his usual morning antics except for the fact that his tail is on my keyboard.
Robbie Fowler and Kenny Dalglish looking none too pleased. Long may that continue.
This would be an important win to open the gap in second... GD would be improved too
Fowler, Dalglish and Rush in the stands... bugger off to Anfield!!
United are starting to play more positive forward balls
Rash offside
United can't concede... especially before half time
OX booked for trying to get McToamin poisoning. That never ends up well.
As I said, this fixture opened up Old Trafford
Sadly, Liverpool won 4-3
Jurgen still with his sideline antics. Glad he's not pleased.
oooh... Mata bikes it just wide... he's not offside
BUGGER
Oh - what an effort from Mata - that would have put a cherry on top of this first half.
OH!!! United should have gone three up as Mata volleyed wide of an open goal off a superb cross.
United have done a marvelous job compressing the space between the midfield and defenders. Liverpool really thrive when the likes of Mane and Salah have space to run into.
If Jurgen rattles any teacups at the half then SAF will send him an invoice.
Marcus Rashford has scored with 29% of his shots in the Premier League against 'big six' clubs, compared to a 10% ratio against the other teams.
Rashford is the first Man Utd player to score two first half goals in a Premier League game against Liverpool since Gary Pallister in 1997
I remember that match in '97 well. It was the very day I arrived in England. I said all my hellos and then went to the Meadows and watch United win at Anfield 3-1.. Both of Pally goals were headers in front of the Kop
Cole scored the third with a header with an atrocious attempt to go for a cross
Agreed, Bob. We haven't really heard their names mentioned too often
I've never been a fan of Spring Forward. But Florida are mad to stay put.
Great memories, UWS. I don't remember that match, but sounds like a great one. Pally must have scored with headers off of set pieces or did he?
Edwin VDS looks tall just sitting!!
Van Der Sar enjoying the match.
Nothing before half please
VDS looking unemotional . Cautiously optimistic?
Robertson wins a corner off of Pool's best spell of possession this match
Both from corners
The second one was a second consecutive corner after James had made a save from Ronny Johnsen
Loveren heads well over off the corner from Milner.,
Liverpool are desperately looking for a goal before half-time to alter the mood.
The win pretty much wrapped up the Title in 97
Into stoppage time. A pair of those minutes.
Shut it Dahlgren... not talk of Liverpool goals... don't even mention it
Schtuum
Two added minutes
Very familiar names on the trip down Memory Lane. David James at times looked more like Syd in goal.
LOL, Dave!
I want a Marcus Rashford hat-trick!!
LOVELY JUBBLY! United two up at the half.
Blow up ref
Thank you
Very satisfying display to start
Same again please
I mentioned the United positioning of the midfield and defense before Le Sox did. Can I have his job?
The end of a perfect first half for United. Off to make some brekkies.
1984... the last time United lost a match at OT after leading at half time
That was Big Fat Ron's reign... Fergie NEVER lost!!!
No changes to either side at the start of this second half.
Second half underway
Don't sit back
More of the same, eh boys?
The Ox easily beats Sanchez for pace
Liverpool with a corner... header on top of the net
Phew
Alexander-Arnold wins an early corner. Van Dyck gets to the corner but his looping header goes over.
Next goal is CRUCIAL!!!
The Ox tries one from distance. Nothing doing.
The first King in the stands
Back for the second half. Was dropping off Jacquelyn for the SAT test. She should finish around halftime of the late match
I don't like how these three in the box and others... like to complain and stir up controversy
As I was walking in, I observed that McTomain poisoning can be a real headache. Is that one of the symptoms?
Sanchez has been hopeless today
Where is his Gunner form
Liverpool want a pen
United being pinned back.... come on
WOW!!! Did United get away with that one. Looks like Valencia stuck out a hand. I've seen those given.
These three are annoying me
Please don't bring on Fellaini!!
United are sitting back
Why can't they play like they did in the first
Craig Pawson didn't think that Valencia used a paw to stop that ball? IS that correct?
Liverpool are on top
United have a chance to break.. terrible pass by Sanchez
Nearly the hour mark now; will Liverpool make any changes?
Now United keeping possession in the Liverpool half off a crunching tackle from Matic.
United fans want United to attack
Jose claps to be opposite
Why make enemies with 76,000 people?
I'm guessing both managers will make changes.
Mo Salah looking like Moe of the Three Stooges with that fall.
United not doing what they should be doing right now
Not liking it
Jose never worries about that. He marches to the beat of his own drummer.
Bobby F a bit moody due to his case of McTomain poisoning.
When is Sanchez going to be the player he can be
Very disappointing
He will come off for Lingard soon
Still no changes as Jurgen must be scratching his hair transplant thinking about .
I can imagine - they're playing it the Mourinho way.
The Ox makes way for LaLaLa.
The Grumpy Ox comes off for Lalana
He makes one. It's Lallana for the Ox as it's a more central figure for a wide one. Ox not pleased.
Van Dyke and Alexis is a humorous picture as one is a foot taller than the other.
High and wide from Milner.
Le Sox wants everyone carded
Again, stirring up controversy. No need for three guys on the mic
Little and Large... remember their shows well
Arlo said that neither side has had a shot on target since the 31st minute
25 minutes plus stoppage time to go
Perhaps Le Socks is throwing a birthday party. You can't card for every single foul. That's ridiculous.
Bloody hell
OG
Not got a good feeling
DAMN !!! LIVERPOOL BACK IN IT THANKS TO AN OG FROM BAILLY.
Sorry, lads. Mane knocks in a consolation goal for Liverpool. Nearly an own goal by Bailly. NBC gets confused for a moment and lists the scoreline as 3-0 United. It's 2-1 in reality.
And now he's hurt!!
Hurt with an OG... it doesn't look good
Great run by Mane past McTomain , but what was BAilly doing at the near post?
Fellaini?
Lindeloff there too
Cue Hair Bear and Lindelof.
Now Bailly down injured. A horrible past couple of minutes. Did he pick up the injury when he scored the OG?
Is he faking it to stop being embarrassed ?
Baiily seems to be okay
The subbing has been nixed
No Lindy for now - Hair Bear to come on for Eric Bailly who has picked up a knock.
Fellaini on for Rashford... bloody hell
No - it's goalscorer Marcus Rashford. Why is he coming off? I don't get that.
Will it be Hair Bear or Lindelhof to replace him? It's Hair Bear for RAsh, who gets a deserved ovation, but not having a good feeling about this.
Have United created anything this half?
Has the Liverpool keeper touched the ball?
Jose must be shutting up shop. Is Bailly still on the pitch?
Wil United get a taste of their own medicine from Monday?
Prior to the OG nioether side had a shot on target since the 31st minute. Neither keeper has really been tested.
Great defending by Alexis on Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool's 8th corner...United have had NONE... we suck at corners anyway
No Pally, Vidic, Rio or Bruce in there
There was no reason to change anything from the first half. Mou has allowed Liverpool back into this one by conceding the momentum. Now United will be fortunate to hang on for 2-1.
Valencia trying to be too fancy and a United counter comes to naught.
Doesn't Smalling score a few headers from corners?
The last thing we need is for United to d the opposite from Monday.
United lead 20-18 in 2018!
Good luck at the Mad Stad today Bob
Back to winning ways
Lallana wins corner Number Nine.
Lallana wins another corner now.
