Russia 2018 - Day 6
I'm waking up with a sense of relief this morning, with the understanding that England have started this World Cup campaign with a win for the first time in my memory. Our celebration of the World Cup is now well and truly on. Today, we're rounding off the groups, with Group H up this morning. First up is Colombia v. Japan. Later we've got Poland and Senegal. And then it all starts again with the hosts facing Egypt in their second match. Join me, won't you?

The teams coming out on the pitch at Saransk:

Referee: Damir Skomina (Slovenia).
Japan gets us underway in Saransk.
Oh dear - it's the two Mexican blokes on the microphones again. I may search for another channel for this one. Unfortunately, it looks like the Canadian channel is taking the morning off.
Oh my - Japan have an early penalty!
And the first red card of the tournament for Carlos Sanchez!!!
On the replay, Sanchez stopped a sure goal with his arm. So he's off for an early bath.
Kagawa, Japan's playmaker, steps up and....scores!!!!
A really poor penalty, in truth, just about down the middle, but the Colombian keeper, Ospina, had already committed himself.
That's quite a shock. I think most of us thought that Colombia, who did so well last time around, would be the favorites in this group. Now they're chasing this match early on and seem rattled by that incident.
Oh - first big chance for Falcao. Just past the post.
Colombia seem less panicked than they were in the immediate aftermath of the penalty and sending off. They’re giving as good as they’re getting right now.
Good morning, Bob. Up to join you and surprised to see Japan one up over the coffee makers
How has the match been?
Did anyone pick Carlos Sanchez for the first red card.
WOW ! A substitution at the half hour mark by Jose Peckerman. Cuadrado, the star player is replaced by Barrios of Boca Juniors.
Nagotomo with a cross deflected on to the top of the net.
Barrios immediately sets up a chance. A long ball was inches to long for Falcao to connect
Falcao fouled by Yoshida. Barely touched but acting like he was polaxed.
Falcao goes down just outside the Japan box. Look like a collision
Hasabe fouls Falcao there - a bit soft - and it sets up a nice free kick chance for Colombia.
GOAL !!!! COLOMBIA TIES IT UP FROM THE FREE KICK
GOAL! The free kick is squeezed under the wall and just past the keeper. There will be a VAR review of that one as it wasn't immediately clear that the ball had crossed the line. But the Colombians are celebrating as if it's a goal.
The goal stands!
1-1 Game on!
Quibtero shot under the wall and the keeper let it trickle under his body just over the line
Morning, MUR - sorry, I missed you coming on while I was checking my work email.
It's been a much more lively affair than I had expected.
That was quite a trick shot by Quintero. Very clever. But the Japanese keeper Kawashima was certainly at fault.
Falcao needs to stop all the flopping and get on with it. That's the only reason Colombia is level.
No problem . Glad to be on board. Agreed. This has been a decent match
Today feels a bit like a hangover after the excitement of that England match yesterday. Phew!
A minute of stoppage time. Surely, there was more stoppage time than that
Agreed. It was hard to wake up this morning
It's 1-1 at the end of an entertaining half.
Half0time at Saransk. Decent match this - a fine appetizer for today. 1-1 at the interval.
Second half underway
Back on for the second half now. More goals, please!
These teams met four years ago. It was also 1-1 at the half in that match, but Colombia ran out 4-1 winners.
Agreed, mate. However, I don't see a repeat of that 4-1 score from four years ago.
Japan have started well in this half and Osako was in for a shot that Ospina did well to turn around.
OH!!! Ospina with a near post save from Osako for a Japan corner. Ospina catches the corner.
I don't either - these sides are more evenly matched than I'd expected.
I notice that you chose Poland to place in this group. The later match should be interesting. Unfortunately, I've got a car service appointment that may interrupt part of that one and part of the later one with Russia and Egypt.
OH!!! Ospina turns around a curler from Inui
Barrios with a late foul on Sakai.
Free kick chance for Japan now. And James Rodriguez makes his Russia 2018 debut.
Wishing you well with your car. I will be around if you want to read the comments.
The free kick was headed wide by Yoshida.
Oh - great ball in and the header from Yoshida is just wide of the mark.
Surprised James didn't start. He's on for Quintero.
I noticed that Peckerman pickled several players who play in the Argie League, the country of his birth.
Oh - Hasebe with a lovely through ball and Haraguchi goes just wide with the volleyed effort. Japan still knocking on the door.
Apparently, James is still trying to recover from injury and isn't 100%.
Wilmer Barrios gets a yellow card.
Barrios booked for a foul on Kagawa.
Davinson Sanchez blocks from Inui , who went on a solo run
Japan wins a corner.
headed away by the first man
I'm guessing that nobody picked Carlos Sanchez to get the first red card
Honda goes for a test drive on the pitch as Kagawa has to make way. Meanwhile Carlos Bacca on for Yzquierdo of the Seagulls.
Honda drives a long range effort easily saved by Ospina.
Those might be some significant changes, as the game had gone a bit flat.
OH!!! Japan should have taken the lead . Osaka laid it off and OShima shot just wide.
GOAL! Japan retake the lead against 10-man Colombia!
GOAL !!! JAPAN LEAD 2-1 . OSAKO HEADS IN THE CORNER DRIVEN IN BY HONDA.
You wouldn't think of Japan as a strong set piece team but they've gone close on several occasions today. In this case, Osako does well to hold off his man and guide a header into the corner.
2-1 Japan
The original shot had deflected off of Davinson Sanchez that resulted in the corner.
Agreed, Bob. Japan seems to have made the right substitution as Honda given Japan the drive to change the course of the match
Falcao has a shot blocked for a corner that came off a poor pass from Honda that was driven in reverse.
Oh - James ghosts in and pulls a great save off Ospina. Corner in and cleared out. Finally, Colombia are showing some urgency.
Are you having bad memories of Rademel Falcao's time at Old Trafford this morning?
James Rodriguez nearly scored then pressure off the second corner before Kawashima gathered.
Yamaguchi on for Sibasoki.
After seeing Falcao taking more dives than in the Olympics, that reminded of why he didn't make it at United.
Osako down with cramp.
Okazaki, the perfect player to bring on against a tired ten man team , on for Osako. He will run the Coffee makers ragged with his tiredless chasing.
James Rodriguez booked for a foul from behind on Haraguchi
I was surprised that the Foxes favorite samurai wasn't starting today. Perhaps that an indication of the strength of the squad?
It hasn't been James' day.
Agreed with both statements. James off the pace and Japan has a surprisingly strong looking team . Lots of players playing in Europe.
A quintet of stoppage time minutes,
Might Group H turn into a group of death?
It might - that is, all of the teams are fairly mediocre and it might be very tight between them.
Kawashima booked for presumably time wasting by the Japanese keeper.
It's over and Japan with a really surprising 2-1 win vs Colombia, who played almost the entire match with ten men
That's it - Japan have won their opening match against Colombia. That's a real turn-up. Most of us had predicted that Colombia would top this group. Now they'll need to fight for their lives against Poland on Sunday afternoon.
We're off to do some errands now - might be a bit late getting back for the next one.
Poland vs Senegal as the last two teams are about to get their 2018 World Cup campaign underway
I might have to miss some of this due to errands as well.
Back just in time for kick-off - here are the teams:
Poland: Szczesny, Piszczek, Pazdan, Cionek, Rybus, Krychowiak, Zielinski, Blaszczykowski, Milik, Grosicki, Lewandowski.
Subs: Fabianski, Jedrzejczyk, Bednarek, Goralski, Linetty, Teodorczyk, Glik, Peszko, Bereszynski, Kurzawa, Kownacki, Bialkowski.
Senegal: Khadim N’Diaye, Wague, Sane, Koulibaly, Sabaly, Sarr, Alfred N’Diaye, Gueye, Niang, Mane, Diouf.
Subs: Diallo, Mbengue, Mbodji, Sow, Kouyate, N’Doye, Konate, Sakho, Ndiaye, Balde, Gassama, Gomis.
Referee: Nawaf Shukralla (Bahrain)
They're off from Moscow.
Not sure why this match gets Fox coverage with JP, the marquee commentator, while England got FS1 with the scrubs.
Both sides in their traditional kits - Poland in white and red and Senegal in all green.
A slow start as both teams attempt to suss each other out and settle into something resembling a rhythm.
I'm back with some lunch. From the kitchen, it seemed as if Senegal was dominating the proceedings.
GOAL! A cruel deflection off a shot by Gaye puts Senegal 1-0 up.
That goal will put Senegal up into second spot behind Japan.
Back from running errands and another upset in the making as Senegal is one up vs Poland
That goal must have been scored on my way home. It's 1-0 at the half.J.P. says it was an O.G.
Half-time arrives. It hasn't been a classic but that hasn't stopped the party for the Polish and Senegalese fans. Senegal go into the dressing room 1-0 up, albeit through a fairly jammy goal.
The O.G. by Cionek of SPAL , who just avoided relegation from Serie A
Big news out of the Brazil camp - Neymar limped out of practice today and could be ruled out of the next match.
Poland make a change . Jan Bednarek of the Saints on for Basczykowski. Kind of a defensive switch. Second half underway
That is big news. I'm guessing Brazil has the depth to overcome that
Bednarek immediately in the wars as he's down
Bednarek shakes it off and is able to continue.
Lewandowski wins a tackle in midfield then goes on a solo run as he's brought down from behind just outside the box.Salif Sane of Schalke booked.
OH!!! A superb free kick from Lewandowski is superbly turned around by keeper, N'Diaye.
Cross from Ryubus volleyed wide Psicyzek . Miss hit into the ground instead of working the keeper.
A Senegal player is down and since Poland won't kick the ball out,a bttle between the two bottom Prem clubs breaks out as the Potters Diouf hacks down the Baggies Krystkowiak
A defensive switch as Diouf , A Potters striker , is replaced by Brummies midfield player N'Doye.
GOAL ???? Senegal two up? VAR being used. The injured rushed on the field before being waved on and Poland was caught out as he raced on to a really horrible back pass from Krystkowiak and caught out the stranded Seu Seu Seudio
It stands . Dr. Joe said the player was waved on at the same time as the back pass and the entire Polish defense switched off, making it a valid goal
Immediately after the goal, the Brummies midfield player came on for the Potters striker.
Poland seems to have run out of ideas and looks set to a really horrible start to this tournament. Group H off to a surprise start
Tigers middie, Grosicki, has a long range effort deflected for a corner that is hit way too far for anyone to reach
Absolutely useless ball from midfield from Zelinski.
Better from Poland Milik just wide off a pass from Pisczek.
Gueye booked for a hefty challenge on Krystkowiak.
Kownacki on for Milik as Poland has one change remaining
Niang, the scorer of the second goal, replaced by Konate
Kowanicki heads a cross straight into the ground and straight to the keeper.
OH!!! Mane sticks out a boot as Seudio rushes out to gather as Mane was about to take a shot.
The Lewandowski gathers a pass and lays it off as he was triple teamed and Rybus straight to the keeper.
The final roll of the dice for the Poles as Beresynski is on for Pisczek.
Sarr goes on a solo run and VAR is being used to see if he was tripped in the box by Rybus , who tried to start a fight but restrained by Seudio.
GOAL !!! KRYSTKOWIAK HEADS IN A LONG POLISH FREE KICK AND WE ARE SET FOR A GRANDSTAND FINISH . NOW 2-1./
VAR being used because another goal scored while a substitution was about be made.. It stands.
The Coyote, of the Hammers , on for N'Doye of Wolves on the final roll of the dice for Aliou Cisse.
Mane is tackled for a late Senegal corner.
A foul is called off the corner as it comes to naught
A quartet of stoppage time minutes.
Krystkowiak tackled for a Polish corner. The keeper catches the corner in traffic.
Grosicki with a forty yard effort that lands in Row M
It's over and Group H starts off with as pair of upsets as Senegal hold on to defeat Poland 2-1.
Back for the late one between the hosts and Egypt.
It's 0-0 33 minutes in with few chances created. Cherries Off had a long range effort just over and just wide while Trezeguet curled a long range effort just wide for Egypt.
Egypt with a surprisingly fair number of supporters against the host nation.
The chilliest match of the tournament where it's only in the upper 50s in St. Pete on a breezy , overcast evening.,
Cherries Off with another long rang effort, but blocked by the ref that leads to an Egyptian counter.
Cherries Off has a cross blocked for a corner.
The corner from Smolov headed well over by Dzuyba.
Salah with his first chance as he turns a defender, but his shot is well wide.
Golovin wins a corner.
Dzuyba completely misses his kick off the corner.
No stoppage time as it's 0-0 at the half.
Just a couple of minutes into the second half and
GOAL !!!! GOLOVIN PUTS A CROSS INTO THE BOX AND AL FATIYH DIVERTED THE BALL INTO HIS OWN GOAL FOR A RUSSIAN LEAD/
Fernandes played the ball down the right to Golovin . His cross was punched away by Al Shanawy and the return cross was diverted in for an unfortunate OG, the fifth of this World Cup.
Aly Gabr, the Baggies reserve, called for a climb on Dzuyba.
Dzuyba has a cross headed out by Aly Gabr for a corner./
The corner from Samedov is headed out for another.
His next corner is headed out as well.
Trezeguet heads down a cross and Salah takes too long to shoot as his shot is off of Fernandes for a corner.
Trezeguet booked, but I'm not sure why.
GOAL !!! CHERRIES OFF PUTS RUSSIA TWO UP.
Dzuyba passed out wide to Samedov, who passed in the box to Fernades and his pass was diverted in from close range by Cherries Off to put Russia two up.
GOAL !!! DZUYBA OUTS RUSSIA THREE UP
A long free kick from the back was trapped own by Dzuyba . He turned Hegazy then passed the ball into the corner of the goal to put Russia three up,
Hector Cuper makes a change as Warda is on for El Neny.
Just wide by Trezeguet as Salah passed to him off a throw.
Soby , who just transferred from Stoke to the Terriers , on for Trezeguet.
SALAH FOULED IN THE D. HE WANTS A PENALTY. DEFINITELY INSIDE THE BOX. Being checked by VAR.
It is a penalty.
GOAL !!! SALAH ROCKETS IT INTO THE ROOF OF THE NET SENDING THE KEEPER THE WRONG WAY , PULLING IT BACK TO 3-1
Kuzaiev on for Cherries off.
Now Russia have a free kick.
Ignasevic heads straight to Al Shanawy.
Another scorer being replaced as Dzuyba is replaced by Small Off.
Hiya, mate - just back from the car service and I see that Russia are 3-1 up and cruising it now and that Mo Salah and Egypt are on their way home.
Russia counter and Golovin takes too long to shoot and is easily tackled by Hegazy.
Kahrba on for Mohsen
Welcome back. Hope everything went well with the car. Russia all but through and Egypt all but out
Small Off back for holding back a player on a counter.
Car is all ship shape now. Not so Egypt's World Cup campaign, which is in a shambles.
Nice to see that Mo Salah got a game and a goal.
The final Russian sub as Jerk Off is replaced by Kudrashov.
Great to hear about the car. Agreed about Egypt and Salah.
Salah shanks a shot well wide as he was off balance.
Great slide tackle on Samedov then Russia get a corner.
The corner from Samedov is headed away
Warda drags a shot wide after Salah was tackled.
A quartet of stoppage time minutes.
It's over as Russia comfortably defeat Egypt 3-1
Cherries Off and Ronny each lead the tournament with three goals.
Well, isn't that a turn-up for the books. Russia were not at all fancied going into the tournament. And now they've won two big matches on the trot. Six goals in two matches and Cherry Coke is now tied with Ronaldo for Golden Boot (albeit with a goal more played).
I'll look for you in the morning again for Portugal v. Morocco.
Cheers, mate. Look forward to chatting with you tomorrow.
