World Cup Warm Up #1

So, we are Wembley again today for the first of two warm up games for the Three Lions. Today they take on Nigeria(voted the coolest shirts) and on Thursday they take on Costa Rica at Elland Road before they jet off to Russia.
Looks like there is no TV coverage over here except for FS+. I will be watching the ITV coverage on this website.

How will Southgate set up his side
Will it be his starting side against Tunisia?
Will he play three at the back which really means FIVE!
Will he play two up top with Kane and Vardy?
Will he play players out of position?

I don't have much hope for this squad in Russia.... maybe they will surprise us! Couldn't do worse than the last few World Cups!

Not sure why Livermore and Lallana are on the bench...they are only in the provisional squad

Young to take England's second corner... deeper...Cahill wins it but is cleared

Sterling with a nice move....shot blocked

Looking good so far

I am encouraged

12:29 PM

oooh, how did England not score from there

Almost in twice

12:29 PM

Nigeria look very ropey to be considered much of a threat this summer. Do you know if they've trotted out all of their available A's?

12:29 PM

Wish that had been Kane onto that Sterling chance. He'd have buried it.

12:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great turn by Sterling... finish was lacking

Flicked it over the keeper but wide....not that close

12:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England could have scored four already and we are only 13 minutes in

12:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nigeria still haven't named their squad
Still 35 in camp

12:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What happened to #7 being coveted shirt(and always mine)

Playing well

12:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Decent cross by Trippier cut off
Came back to him and he tripped....himself

12:35 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Honestly don't like Young so far forward. It's working against these mugs, but it mustn't become a habit at the sharp end of things.

12:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

VAR being used but only for goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identities

Sterling with another chance... blows it...passes to Young... saved

Sterling can't finish in front of goal!!!

Still encouraged

12:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This has been ALL ENGLAND in the first 20 minutes and Kane has hardly touched the ball

12:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Young to take a free kick from out on the left... swinging in... cleared

12:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

If Vardy was in there... he would have scored where Sterling didn't

12:39 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Not keen on VAR. It's too disruptive. When I've watched it in use, it feels very NFL to me.

Kane is weirdly not involved. Worried about an injury?

12:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hope that England do use their subs well in Russia

Rashford and Vardy would give scoring options when goals are needed

12:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nigeria are the lowest ranked African team in the Finals
Tunisia.... the highest

12:42 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Totally agreed about VAR

Can't really celebrate a goal...until it is confirmed!

That pen for Italy's equalizer was mindless

12:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I think I'd run Vardy like a viscous dog from the start, and then when they're tired of him, bring on a speedy option like the Rash or Sterling. I'd save Welbs for when Kane needs a breather or sub.

12:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Southgate has asked for an Asian referee for Thursday match to get a feeling about the man in black, red, yellow, blue... whatever they wear

12:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sounds like a great plan
Why aren't you in charge!!

12:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nigeria with their first foray in the the box... England panicked a little

12:44 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What are you thoughts on Shrek to DC United
Would you want him?

12:45 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Stones needs to be told the saying

WHEN IN DOUBT
KICK IT OUT

12:45 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Agreed. I would much prefer a few errors than the farcical spectacle of VAR. I'd prefer miking the refs so we can hear what the players are yelling at them, and the introduction of 5-10-15 sin-bins to punish numbskull crap like simulation and dissent.

12:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice move by England
Quick move... Lindy has a shot blocked at the near post

12:46 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I have always like not knowing how much time is left but it is getting ridiculous
I am moving into the clock being shown.... a player goes down to waste time...stop the clock
All those moronic substitutions at the end...stop the clock

All of it will end!

12:47 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great movement again... Lingard fails to find the man!!!

Modern Day footballers can't cross!!

Bring back Coppell, Hill, Beck, Giggs

12:48 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm ok with Wazza to DC. I don't think he's got an outrageous number of goals in him any more. but as long as he can prove his physical fitness, it would be great to have a little excitement like him again. My vote was for bringing in Ballo. That guy would have the goals for sure, and a much higher entertainment factor, on and off the pitch.

12:49 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

If this was the WC... I would be thrilled with this display!!

12:49 PM

12:50 PM

Another great move...another piss pour cross by Sterling

So frustrating

12:50 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Jully 14th. They just laid the new pitch yesterday and the monsoon weather we're having will help it get ready for the opener.

12:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I really wouldn't have Sterling in my side

He is so wasteful

12:51 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sterling with the ball again is wasteful... comes to Lindy with weak effort blocked for a corner

Young to take...come on England

Deep...punched out

12:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Capacity?

12:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I have been the Union and Red Bulls stadiums

Both perfect sizes for the MLS

They are doing it right

Do the Revs still play at the Gillette? They need to move

12:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nigeria with first shot from tight angle saved by Pickford

12:54 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The Ballo rumor apparently was real. We sent our recruiting team over to woo him, but he wouldn't commit to talks and a DC visit before the home opener. I know he's back in the Italian national team but that's not worth a pail of piss with them out of serious contention until Euro '20. By then, I don't expect them to be thinking of a Ballo in attack Italia.

12:54 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England with another chance... hit over by...guess who... Sterling

12:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Where's your brother?

12:58 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

OK Raheem, watch and learn from a master finisher. One chance, and wallop! 2-0. One more before the half would make up for Sterling's profligacy. And it would be great if it was him. If he finishes without at least one, the tabs will be on his back tonight and it won't be because of his idiot taste in tattoos either.

12:58 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great for DC....out of town?

12:59 PM

I hope England play this way against Tunisia...not afraid to attack... great display so far!!

What does Wrighty and Dixon think

Lee is pleased
So is Ian

1:09 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Sterling has gotten himself in some great positions and has had great movement...it is his finishing

1:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

For Kane's goal, it came from a poor pass from him to Sterling which caused the ball back to him

1:12 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think Young and Trippier have done great out wide

1:13 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

4 change for Nigeria. None for England. And we're off.

1-2... under two minutes

1:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

All of a sudden.... England are second best

1:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The full backs have been invited to rampage forward. It will be interesting to see if they will defend as well as they got forward. Nigeria showing more intent in nine mintues than then did in the first 45

1:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So bad by Sterling!!

Gets a yellow for a dive.... fans cheer the yellow

I HATE IT

1:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I'd take him off for Vardy or Rashford

1:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yep, clear attempt to deceive the ref and a deserved yellow for Raheem. He does himself no favors does he. Southgate's got a decision to make. Withdraw him after his dreadful hour, or persevere with him because he needs to redeem himself?

1:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on England....just like the first half

1:33 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I'd like it if Kane got more service than he's getting, or if Alli could exploit the attention their defenders are giving Kane. I can't remember any chances that have come from Alli doing anything at all.

1:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Second half has changed from the first half

1:36 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

No, this is just drift from England. I'm waiting for Southgate's changes. This is awful

1:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England should have been out of sight but not now

1:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dier should have scored from a close header

1:38 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Oh yeah, Lindgard is on the pitch. I'd forgotten. He's been so anonymous I was thinking that he'd make a good change to liven things up. Not so much, I guess.

1:39 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Agreed. Dier scores those plenty for Spurs.

1:40 PM

1:57 PM

I'd like that

1:57 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Do you get the point of Delph in the squad? He's so mediocre, IMHO. Even a new-boy with something to prove would be a more positive choice.

1:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I totally agree
Mediocre is a perfect description.... it is just the wizard Pep's influence..... that gets you a call up all the time

Stones, Sterling, Delph

2:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Glenda has to name his man of the match.... he gives it to Cahill with an honorable mention to Lingard and Ali

2:04 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Stones is probably the best of a poor crop. I hoped Tarkowski would have pressed his way in, but his previous England outing did show him up as not at all ready for that jump. I would hope that Southgate would realize that Cahill's a bit creaky and Stones switches off, and the best bet is to have a midfield that makes their job easier.

2:07 PM
